Heart Attack Suffered a Week Ago Proves Fatal; Was 64 Years Old
A heart attack suffered a week ago proved fatal early today in
Edward Gutenkunst, mayor of the city of Kiel for the past three
and one-half years. Mayor Gutenkunst, who was 64, died at his
home, 412 South 5th street, Kiel, at 5:30 a.m. today.
The retired druggist, who had been a leading figure in the
political life of Kiel since coming there in 1902, was drafted
as a candidate in 1939 and won handily. He was unopposed for
re-election in April 1941 and his present term would have expired
next April.
Well Known Public Figure
From 1902 to 1922 he operated a drugstore on Fremont street in
Kiel and served as manager of the Kiel branch of the Wisconsin
Telephone company during that time, handling that business from
the rear of his store. He served six years as village trustee;
was treasurer of the school board when preparations were made to
build the new high school; was trustee of the light plant when
the new plant was erected; served as president of the Chamber of
Commerce in 1935; was justice of the peace for ten years; was a
member of the Park board; and has been a director of the Citizens
State Bank of Kiel since it was organized about 28 years ago.
Arrangements for the funeral have not het been completed but the
body was removed to the C.J. Meiselwitz funeral home. It is expected
that there will be short services in Kiel and that the body will
then be taken to Milwaukee where services will also be held and
where interment will be made.
Born in Milwaukee
Mr. Gutenkunst was born in Milwaukee on June 12, 1878, the son of
the late Jacob and Justine Gutenkunst. He received his schooling in
Milwaukee and after completing high school studied pharmacy under a
tutor. He then worked in a Milwaukee drug store for nine years, coming
to Kiel in 1902 and purchasing the Peter Kaebel drug store. In 1922
he sold out to Stewart Lindsay and retired to private life.
He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
On June 9, 1903 he married Miss Sigrid Akerhielm of Chicago at
Chicago.
