JOHN SACHSE Death in Centerville on Sunday, following a long illness, of John Sachse as the result of a stroke he suffered several months ago. Mr. Sachse, who was 72, came with his parents from Germany in 1852. The family settled in Centerville and the deceased remained there. He operated a shoe shop by himself and was Postmaster for several years as well as filling other elective posts. In the latter stages of the Civil War he served with Co. The local post of the G.A.R., of which he was a member, yesterday gave the last salute to its veteran. Der Nord Westen, 29 Mar. 1906 ******** Again has the Angel of Death appeared in our midst and taken home the soul of an early pioneer and veteran of the civil war. Mr. John Sachse, who for a number of years had been a resident of our town, died Sunday morning at eleven o'clock. He was born in Germany in 1834 and came, with his parents, to this country while still in his infancy. When the war broke out, he was one of those who offered their lives for their country. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon and was attended by a large number of friends, who gathered to pay their last respects to an old-time and honored friend, who was always ready to lend a helping hand. LOUIS SACHSE Last Sun., 6 boys from Centerville took a sailboat out onto Lake Michigan; they were Alfred Keune, Gustav Keune, Friedrich Kuhl, and brothers Frank, Wilhelm, and Louis Sachse. The water was quiet, but somehow the boat turned over. The boys clung to the keel for a while, but at some point the boat rolled and threw them into the water again. Louis Sachse disappeared. The other 5 clung to the boat until help arrived. Louis was age 16 and the youngest son of John Sachse, postmaster in Centerville. Search for the body still continues. Der Nord Westen, 16 Aug. 1888 ******** The body of Louis Sachse was found last Sun. (see entry of 16 Aug.). The body was found about 3-1/2 miles away from the accident and had to be identified by his clothing and contents of the pockets. Justice of the Peace W.T. Albers held an inquest, and it was the verdict of the jury that Louis Sachse accidentally drowned. He was only 16 yrs. 8 mos. and 1 day old and in addition to his parents, left 3 brothers and 5 sisters. He was buried in the Centerville Cemetery with Pastor Sprengling delivering the funeral speech. Der Nord Westen, 20 Sept. 1888 ******** FOUND AND BURIED. The body of Louis Sachse, the young man, who was drowned near Centerville on Aug. 12, 1888 was found 3 1/2 miles from the place of the calamity on Friday, Sept. 14th. An inquest was held by Justice W.T. Albers, and the jury rendered a verdict of accidental drowning. Decomposition had already set in, therefore the burial had to take place the same afternoon. Rev. Sprengling and a great number of friends and neighbors formed the funeral cortege to the Centerville cemetery. Wreaths of flowers were deposited on the grave as mementos of sympathizing friends. The hopeful young man was, as his death 16 years, 8 months and 1 day of age, and leaves his parents, three brothers and five sisters to mourn his untimely and sad death. The relatives of the deceased wish to express to all those who assisted in the recovery of the body, and attended the funeral their sincerest thanks, and pray, that providence may spare them from a similar visitation. Herald Times Reporter Friday, January 12, 1979 pg. 3 ********** The following story is from "Wisconsin Lore" by Robert E. Gard & L.G. Sorden 1962, p 36-37 Related by Mrs. J. G. Slater of Cleveland, Wisconsin: This authentic tale happened when I was about twelve years old and lived on a farm near Cleveland. One night my father entertained a group of friends and business associates. It was a pleasant evening with serious talk first and laughter and jokes over a glass of cider later. When it was time for the guests to depart, my father went outside to tell the hired man to harness up the horses and bring the conveyance to the door. When he returned we were all surprised to see him being led in by the hired man. He looked queer and had beads of perspiration on his forehead. As soon as he wiped them off, more appeared. Mother rushed forward, deeply concerned. One of the men exclaimed, "Did you see a ghost, Hencel?" They started to laugh but could sense that their friend was extremely upset. Presently my father settled back down and described his experience: On his way to the stable he had been halted suddenly by observing in the gray shadows of night the figures of men in somber garments, passing through a side gate, followed by a coffin borne by pallbearers. Strangest and most shattering was his realization that the faces of all the pallbearers were those of the men sitting, at that moment, in his house, with one exception, for he could not see the face of his best friend-a miller and dealer in grains-among the figures in the ghostly apparition. He himself was one of the pall-bearers also. After the vision faded away, he could only stand horror-stricken in his tracks. He feared his legs would not support him if he attempted to walk, for there is something in the supernatural that strikes terror even into the bravest heart. Fortunately the hired man came out of the stable with a friendly lantern and, noticing something was amiss, helped my father back into the house. His friends were openly skeptical of his story and hinted slyly that he must have drunk more cider before he went outside. However, their carriages were at the door, putting an end to further talk on the subject. After cheerful good nights they went home. At ten o'clock the following morning one of the previous night's guests arrived on a bicycle, deep concern stamped on his features. He came to report that the miller had died of a heart attack while sitting at his kitchen table, where his wife discovered him when she went down to start breakfast. His had been the only face my father had not seen in the shocking vision at the farm gate. The surmise was that in the phantom funeral the miller was the dead man, for at his funeral a few days later everything else was just as my father had seen it in his out-of-the-ordinary vision. ******* (15 Oct 1887/Jan 1979/SSDI)
