JOHN W. JUNK TWO KILLED, SIX HURT IN CRASH Walter Maertz, John Junk Killed On Highway 141 Two young men were killed, one instantly, and six others were injured when two cars collided head-on with terrific force on Highway 141, a block north of the Pigeon river bridge shortly after 12 o'clock Sunday night. Walter Maertz, 19, 1426 Ontario avenue, a WPA worker and the sole support of his widowed mother, died in Memorial hospital a few hours after the accident. His skull was fractured, his jaw and left wrist broken. John Junk, 22, R. !. Cleveland, a farm hand, was killed instantly when he was thrown through the windshield to the pavement. Fatal injuries were sustained to his head, face and neck. List Of Injured The injured and their injuries are as follows: Theodore Klein, 18, Cleveland, R. 1. riding in the Ford roadster, and now at St. Nicholas hospital, has minor cuts and his physician said that he will be able to leave the hospital today. Lawrence Klein, 20, Cleveland, R. 1, brother of Theodore, was the driver of the ill-fated roadster, and he is in ST. Nicholas hospital suffering from a broken left hand, deep scalp laceration and cuts along the face. His physician said that he may have a brain injury. John Rosenthal, 1314 St. Clair avenue, suffered from bruises and shock, but was allowed to go to his home after the accident. Walter Tighe, 609 1/2 Center avenue, also suffered from bruises and scratches, and he was allowed to go to his home. Philip Rosenthal, 25, 1312 Center avenue, a brother of John, and the driver of the sedan in which young Maertz was fatally injured, is in Memorial hospital with a broken nose, contusions and lacerations about the face, contusions to the chest, and a possible fracture of the jaw. Jacob Ehlert, 21, 1507 S Eight street, riding in the sedan has a fractured nose and minor lacerations about the face. District Attorney Jacob A Fessler, Coroner Harry Heiden and others involved met at the court house at 1:30 p.m. to conduct an inquest. The coroner's jury, consisting of Frank Michels, Gerry Pauly, Leonard Eversdyke, Steve Maretich?, William Arndt Jr., county officers and officials, went to the scene of the accident this afternoon. District Attorney Jacob A. Fessler pointed out the various road conditions that might entered into the case at a later date, and Sheriff Dreps and officers Gilligan told of how they had found the cars and the body. The inquest proper, Attorney Fessler said, would not be held until such time that the witnesses now in the hospitals could testify. Returning From Ball Game Five young men, all members of the Linger Bar softball team from Sheboygan, were returning from a night game with the Ponds All Stars of Appleton. They were riding in a Ford Model A sedan, and Philip Rosenthal was driving the car. Seated with him in the front seat was Mr. Maertz, the youth who was killed. The other three were in the read seat. All were wearing their baseball uniforms. The three Cleveland youths were returning to their respective homes after going to a show in Sheboygan. They were all seated in the front seat of a Ford Model A roadster. Taken To Hospitals Judging from the damage to both machines, they must have collided with terrific force. After the accident it was with great difficulty that another car was finally stopped to give assistance. A car driven by Edmund Peters, 819 Huron avenue, brought Mr. Maetz, Mr. Ehlert and Philip Rosenthal to the Sheboygan Clinic. From there the police and Schmitt's Ambulance Service took them to Memorial hospital. The body of Mr. Junk was left at the scene of the accident until Coroner Harry Heiden could view it. Schmitt's ambulance then took it to the Ballhorn's Funeral temple. The others, not so seriously injured, were also brought to Sheboygan for medical treatment. Sedan Demolished Sheriff Joe Dreps, Traffic Officer Roland Gilligan and Dr. Heiden were called to the scene of the accident immediately. Red flares were set at either end of the wreckage and traffic slowed to a "walk" for a quarter-mile each way. The sedan was an absolute wreck. When the wrecking service attempted to raise the front end to tow it to the city, the motor all but fell out. The roadster, although damaged considerably, was not nearly so badly wrecked as the sedan. It evidently recoiled from the force of the impact and swung about so it stood crosswise in the road. The three officers, Dreps, Heiden and Gilligan, assisted by a few men who happened to stop, swept glass from the pavement for a distance of 150 feet. Sand was strewn over the great pools of blood in which the dead, dying and injured had lain. Sheriff Notifies Parents Sheriff Dreps, obtaining the name of the young man from Cleveland who had been killed instantly, drove to that section of Manitowoc county at 4 a.m. to inform the parents of the tragedy. He found them all in bed, but aroused them and told them that John had been fatally injured. Mr. Junk, son of William Junk, St. Wendel, was born October 20, 1913. He attended the St. Wendel Catholic school and graduated from eighth grade. After graduating he assisted his father on the farm until three years ago at which time he employed as a farm hand by Nick Weiter, town of Centerville. JOHN A. LOGAN Two Killed, Two Injured When Car Strikes Tree Two Cleveland teen-agers were killed outright and two others were injured early Sunday when a car left County Trunk M, a half mile south of Franklin, and uprooted a large tree. The dead were identified as John A. Logan, 18, the driver, and Miss Dianne Jean Buchberger, 16, a passenger in the front seat of the car. Injured and reported in "fair" condition at St. Nicholas Hospital today were Thomas Wagner, 17, and miss Clementine Meyer, 16, also of Cleveland. Miss Meyer was being treated for a fractured collarbone, a back injury and multiple bruises. Wagner's injuries included a fractured right leg and ankle and lacerations of the scalp and left leg. It was the first double fatality accident in Sheboygan County this year and raised the county's 1959 highway death tool to five, compared with nine on this date a year ago. Torn Out Of Ground Investigating sheriff deputies said Logan's northbound car hurtled off a curve with such force that it torn an 18-inch diameter tree out of the ground, 125 feet beyond the edge of the highway, and then smashed into a smaller tree. The car, a 1954 Chevrolet two-door sedan, was completely demolished. Deputies said the uprooted tree tore through the frame metal of the auto and pinned both Logan and Miss Buchberger against the dashboard. Wrecking equipment from a Plymouth garage had to be used to pull apart the twisted wreckage before the bodies could be extricated. Miss Meyer and Wagner, who were riding in the back seat, were thrown from the auto after the impact. They landed about 10 feet beyond the wreckage. Dr. Roman C. Pauly, acting county coroner, pronounced both victims dead at the scene. He said Logan apparently died of a crushed chest and abdomen. He attributed Miss Buchberger's death to probable fractured neck and internal injuries. Both died instantly. Sheriff Harold B. Kroll, who visited the scene of the accident Sunday morning, said the car narrowly missed hitting a large rock, about 30 inches high and four feet long, along the north side of the curve. He said evidence at the scene indicated that the car, after hurtling a ditch along the edge of the road, may have spun through the air over the rock before crashing into the tree. Cause of the accident remained a mystery today. Miss Meyer, who was questioned at the hospital this morning by sheriff deputies, said she was sleep in the back seat of the car at the time of the mishap. Flags Down Motorist After being thrown from the car, she stumbled back to the road and flagged down a passing motorist who notified the sheriff's office from a nearby farm home. Wagner was under sedation at the hospital today and could not be questioned. Miss Meyer said she and the Buchberger girl had met Logan and Wagner at a wedding dance late Saturday night at the Tourist Inn at St. Wendel. She said Logan offered to drive her and Dianne to another wedding dance at Laack's Hall in Johnsonville to look for Dianne's sister. They left St. Wendel between 11:30 p.m. and midnight. The girls spend 15 or 20 minutes at Laack's hall, while Logan and Wagner waited outside in the car, and then began the return trip to Cleveland. Miss Meyer told deputies that shortly after they let Johnsonville, Dianne fell asleep in the front seat and she fell asleep in the back. Neither had been drinking, she said. The accident occurred shortly after 1 a.m. Attended Central Dianne, a daughter of Joseph and Loretta Piehl Buchberger of Cleveland, would have been a junior at Sheboygan Central High School this fall. Logan, a 1958 graduate of Central High, was the son of Edward and Catherine Steinhardt Logan. he was employed at the Lakeshore Canning Co. at Cleveland.
