PETER POPPE The dread disease consumption has claimed another victim in the person of Peter Poppe, a young man of town Eaton. Two years ago Mr. Poppe went into the employ of Schmidt & Mathaeus to learn the tinners trade when the dread disease began to show itself. He then took a trip for his health to California, from where he returned some time later, apparently well, but it was not long before the symptoms again began to show themselves. From that time on he began to grow worse until the disease terminated in death last week Thursday. Mr. Poppe was an upright and honest man, loved and respected by all who knew him. We extend our sincere sympathy to the bereft family. Chilton Times, June 18, 1896

CHRISTINE ROH Christine Roeh On the 22nd, Mrs. Roeh of Schleswig, Manitowoc county, committed suicide by drowning. The self murder was committed prior to midnight and there is no doubt but what it was a premeditated act as on the day previous to the committal of the sad crime she had some of the children fill a barrel with water, and then perpetrated the rash act when her husband was wrapped in the arm of Morpheus. He awoke about twelve o’clock and noticing her absence went in search and found the body. She left a note on the table which contained the following words, or words to the same effect “Put me in bed and don’t let anybody know anything about it.” Her age was 40 years and sympathy flows, without stint for the wifeless husband and motherless children. WILLIAM ZARMSDORF Stricken in Car, Elderly Man Dies Returning from a visit with relatives, a 71 year old New Holstein farm implement dealer, died at the wheel of his car as he traveled a town road in Schleswig Sunday evening. William Zarmsdorf died of a heart attack, Dr. Theodore Teitgen, county coroner, said after arriving on the scene. Zarmsdorf was stricken on a road just south of Wilke’s Lake, about six miles northeast of Kiel. Coroner Teitgen and Sheriff Baryenbruch were summoned to the scene by Charles Krueger and Edward Pekarske, who noticed from Krueger’s home that Zarmsdorf’s old model vehicle had been halted in the middle of the road for some time. Dr. Teitgen said Zarmsdorf was returning to New Holstein from the home of a nephew in the county.
