JAMES HANSEN KIEL BOY SURVIVES CRASH; LATER BECOMES ROAD VICTIM Moving Auto Strikes Down James Hansen Minutes Earlier 3-Year-Old Was In Violent Crash ST. NAZIANZ—A three-year-old Kiel boy was struck down and killed by an automobile in heavy rain Sunday night after surviving another accident minutes earlier. Victim of the tragedy four miles south of this village on County Highway A about 8 p.m. was James Hansen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Noel Hansen, 1027-6th St., Kiel. The Hansen boy was one of nine persons to die on Wisconsin roads during the weekend. The toll for the year rose to 477, compared with 453 at this time a year ago. Six Injured Six persons, including the boy's mother and his brother and sister, were injured in the original accident. They included Mrs. Betty Hansen, 23, and children, Lori, 4, and Richard, 1 ½; Joseph Dewane, 17, of Rt. 1, Valders, driver of the car and uncle to the deceased; Mary Dewane, 15, same rural Valders address, and Jerome Mahloch, 16, of St. Nazianz. All were confine to Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, for treatment and X-rays. None was believed to be hurt critically. Two other occupants of the Dewane car, Robert Woelfel and Lee Bartel, both 17, of Rt. 1, Valders, were not hurt. County traffic police said Dewane and his sister, Mary, were taking Mrs. Hansen and her children to her home at Kiel when the accident happened. Mrs. Hansen had been visiting earlier at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Dewane of Rt. 1, Valders. Lost Control Dewane told investigating officers that he lost control while driving in the heavy downpour on a straight stretch of highway. The vehicle ran off the right side, skidded broadside down the highway and then traveled the left ditch for a considerable distance. The engine was torn loose when the car hit a tree stump. The 1959 model Chevrolet four door sedan was listed as a total wreck. During the confusion which followed the accident, the Hansen boy wandered into the highway and was struck by a car driven by Emil F. Krueger, 55, of 725 E. Water St., Sheboygan. He suffered a skull fracture and broken left leg and was dead on arrival at the Manitowoc hospital. A passing motorist tried to flag down Krueger but the Sheboygan man did not see him because of poor visibility. Inquest Planned Dr. Theodore Teitgen, county coroner, said Krueger stopped his car about 180 feet from the point of impact. Krueger was not held but Doctor Teitgen indicated there would be an inquest into the two accidents. Krueger and his wife were en-route to a cottage at Wilke Lake with two grandchildren. Joseph Dewane admitted having five bottles of beer at his parent's home prior to the accident, according to the coroner. Mrs. Hansen is separated from her husband whose present whereabouts is unknown. The Hansen boy was the sixth county traffic fatality so far this year and the second youngster to be killed in this area within a week's time. The other young victim was Lora Lee Hoffman, four months old Green Bay girl. Funeral Services James was born April 5, 1958, at Green Bay, son of Noel and Betty Dewane Hansen. The family moved to Kiel in October of 1950. Survivors include the parents, a sister Lori, 4, and a brother, Richard, 1; the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Dewane of Rt. 1, Valders, and the paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Eric Hansen of Sheboygan. Funeral services will be at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel, and at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz, with the Rev. Dennis Cooney officiating. ANNA HARTMANN SCHLESWIG WOMAN TAKES PARIS GREEN AND DIES IN AGONY PUBLICATION OF BEHNKE CASE DETAILS MAY HAVE SUGGESTED METHOD OF SUICIDE-LOCAL MAN MAKES BOTCH JOB Was Mrs. Anna Hartman, a town of Schleswig woman, who committed suicide Saturday night, of impressionable mind and did the publication of the Behnke case at Collins, suggest the use of paris green by the woman? This is the belief of officials here who are investigating the death of Mrs. Hartman who, suddenly taken ill Saturday night at 10, died Sunday morning at 6 o'clock after having suffered for hours from paris green poisoning, physicians being unable to save the woman. No cause is known for the act of Mrs. Hartman, who was 45 years of age and the mother of two children, one a son of 20. At 10 o'clock Saturday night she was taken seriously ill and her condition indicated poison and later quantities of paris green were vomited up by the woman. Physicians who were called worked all night in an effort to save her life but the effort was futile and she died early in the morning. Where Mrs. Hartman secured the poison is a mystery as no trace of paris green was found in a search of the premises and so far as known there was none in the house. Mrs. Hartman had not made purchase of the poison lately, so far as known to the family. Though of a nervous temperament, Mrs. Hartman had not been seriously ill, and there had been no domestic troubles in the home and relatives are at a loss to account for her rash act. Reports of the death of Mrs. Hartman and the circumstances surrounding it were received by District Atty Healy and Coroner Falge Sunday and the coroner is at Schleswig today to investigate, though the case is undoubtedly one of suicide. On Oct. 21, 1890 he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Hartmann, who preceded him in death several years ago. He made his home in this vicinity all his life.
