ANTON KALTENBRUN DAUGHTER LOOKS ON, HELPLESS, AS MAN HANGS SELF St. Nazianz Inventor Just Freed From Insane Asylum Anton Kaultenbrun, of St. Nazianz, known as a genius, and inventor of a feed cutter on which he held valuable patents, commited suicide by hanging in a shed at his home Saturday afternoon while his little 10 year old daughter, a witness to the tragedy, was unable to summon help in time to prevent the act of the crazed man. When neighbors reached the scene in response to the cries of the horrified child, they found that Kaultenbrun had accomplished his mad pursuit and was beyond help. Kaultenbrun who was 47 years of age, had long been considered an eccentric character and twice been committed to the northern hospital at Oshkosh from which he was paroled only April 1, this year, and had returned to his home. Saturday he was about as usual and during the afternoon while in the shed where he was working on his invention, secured a rope and fastened it about a rafter and swung off. His little daughter passing the shed, saw her father suspended by the rope and cried for help but when assistance reached the man, he was found to be dead. AN INVENTIVE GENIUS Some years ago, Kaultenbrun, who was a farmer, and a genius of inventive turn, had perfected improvements to a feed cutter which the government recognized by granting him patents. Later the man worked upon a blower he was perfecting at the time his mind gave way in March 1919, when he was committed to the Oshkosh institution. He was later released but was again committed and remained there until this month. Manitowoc Herald News, Vol. 21, Manitowoc, Wis., Monday, April 26, 1920, No. 149 ******** Notes from St. Nazianz On Saturday, Anton Kaltenbrun hung himself in his workshop. He was 48 years old. He was married twelve years ago to Anna Schweitzer, who with four children survive him. They are Adelinda, 11, Rosalia, 8, Monica, 4 and Ambrose, 1 year old. Besides, he leaves his 84 year old mother, two brothers and two sisters, viz: Ambrose, Ludwig and Mrs. Anton Schwoerer and Mrs. Mutzbauer of Milwaukee. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock from St. Gregory’s Church. On Saturday death entered the Kaltenbrunn home and took from them their beloved husband and father, Anton Kaltenbrunn, better known as "Foundry Tony." The deceased was born here Feb. 24, 1872, and reached an age of 48 years and two months. He was married 12 years ago to Anna Schweitzer, who with four children survive him. They are: Adelinda, 11, Rosalia, 8, Monica, 4, and Ambros, 1 year old. Besides he leaves his 84 year old mother, two brothers and two sisters, viz: Ambrose, Ludwig and Mrs. Anton Schwoerer here, and Mrs. Mutzbauer of Milwaukee. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Gregory's church. ** Postnote: The obituary lists his wife's maiden name as Schweitzer however my research of vital records indicate her maiden name was Stahl. I believe this to be a misprint. ******** Anton Kaltenbrun was paroled from the insane asylum at Green Bay Tuesday and he is now at his home, St. Nazianz. Kaltenbrun has a varied history and a few weeks ago sent to Green Bay as insane. He said at that time that he had seen a vision of Christ and it was that which largely was responsible, in all probability for his incarceration. The aid of Attorney Craite was enlisted and a short time ago he secured the information that Kaltenbrun would be paroled. Kaltenbrun's future conduct will determine whether or not he will be discharged. His ten-year old daughter saw the deed and ran for help, this came too late though. Kaltenbrunn suffered from mental instability and was first for a week taken home from the institution by his spouse on parole. He appeared to be quite normal. He was the inventor of a feed cutter and owned other patents as well. He was 47 years old and left behind a wife with 4 children. The burial took place on Tuesday morning at half an hour ‘til ten.” —interpretation by Emilie B. Lindemann (sent in by researcher/see contributors page) ******** MAY GET OUT ON PAROLE. Anton Kaltenbrun, a native of St. Nazianz, who was committed to the hospital for insane at Oshkosh over three months ago, wrote to Atty. Craite recently, requesting him to make an effort to secure his (Kaltenbrun's) release from the hospital. The attorney wrote to the state board of control asking that the Kaltenbrun case be investigated. A leter from the superintendent of the asylum to the board would lead one to believe that Kaltenbrun may be released before long. The letter is as follows: Winnebago, Wis., Sept. 26, 1907. Hon. Herman Grotophorst, Madison, Wis. Dear Sir:-Yours asking for Anton Kaltenbrun is at hand. Mr. Kaltenbrun wat (sic) admitted here Aug. 8, 1907. He is a man, a German, 36 years of age. He is a machinist. He is a mild pleasant man. He takes kindly to the life of the hospital. Mentally he is somewhat confused a portion of the time. He sometimes talks in a rambling inconsequential manner. He has not been very greatly deranged any of the time but says he was run down before he came here and he realized at times he was not himself. He is quite tractable here. He is always smiling and good natured and has improved considerably, both mentally and bodily. He has gained seven pounds in weight since his admission. Mr. Kaltenbrun is not particularly anxious to leave the hospital for he has never requested me to let him go. He told me that the Manitowoc sheriff stated to him when he was leaving Manitowoc that he should write to the sheriff when he wished to get out of the hospital so one day he says he wrote the sheriff and the sheriff gave the letter to a lawyer. It seems he has had a sweetheart for the last five or six years and she has been to see him lately, and I think it is probable that the sweeeheart's (sic) talk has caused him to write to the sheriff and temporarily he had a desire to leave. He likes to talk about his seetheart in a foolish way. It is probable that he could be paroled before a great while, especially if there is some one who is interested in him, (apart from financial considerations) and will look after him. Of course you know the crowded condidtion of this hospital and the constant efforts I make for people to get away. Every patient we can parole is always a relief to us. I am sure if you came here and talk with Mr. Kaltenbrun you will conclude that he is impaired mentally and is a suitable person for treatment and the declaration thst (sic) he was sane at the time of his commitment entirely unfounded. EVA (GEIGEL) KALTENBRUN (sent in by researcher-see contributors page) This obituary can be found in the Tri-County Record, Kiel, Wisconsin. Issue - Thursday, July 28, 1927 - Page 4, Column 1. Mrs. Eva Kaltenbrunn, nee Geigel, widow of the late Victor Kaltenbrunn, died Thursday noon at the age of 89 years, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. Schwoerer. She was born in Baden, Germany, and at the age of 21 years, came with her sister to America. In 1870 she was united in marriage to Mr. Kaltenbrunn, a widower with five children. They resided on a farm one mile north of St. Nazianz, where the deceased lived with her son, Ambrose, until about three weeks ago, when she became ill. Her daughter, Mrs. Anton Schwoerer then took her to her home, where she died peacefully. Her death was rather sudden, as when the daughter brought the tray with her noon day meal to her, she found her mother dead. The survivors are the son, Ambrose, two daughters, Mrs. A. Schwoerer and Mrs. Mutzbauer of Milwaukee, and the wife and children of her late son, Anton Kaltenbrunn. Funeral services were held on Monday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Gregory's church, officiated by Rev. F. Holzknecht. Burial will be in the adjacent cemetery. Correction Postnote: My research of the church and civil records indicate that they were married in 1869, not 1870 as mentioned in this obituary. Mrs. Mutzbauer was Eva's step-daughter. Eva Giegel was born in Germany April 20, 1838, and came to this neighborhood directly from her old home at the age of 25 years. Five years later she was united in marriage to Mr. Kaltenbrunn who was a widower with four small children three daughters and one son. To this union were born three children, two boys and one girl. Her husband preceded her in death forty-two years ago and she with her young family continued for several years to conduct the farm on which her home was established. Of her immediate family there still survive one daughter, Mrs. Anton Schwoerer, and one son, Ambrose Schwoerer, both of this vicinity, and one step daughter, Mrs. Joseph Mutzbauer of Milwaukee. She also leaves twelve grandchildren and one great-grand child to mourn her loss. Mrs. Kaltenbrunn had for a number of years been a member of the Third Order of St. Francis and the the (sic) Christian Mothers' Society. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Fintan Holzknecht, S.D.S., at 9:30 Monday and interment was made in the village cemetery. She had been ill for some time. Mrs. Kaltenbrunn, nee Katherine Riesterer, was born April 18, 1852, in Baden, Germany, and in 1871 came to America, direct to St. Nazianz. In September, 1874, she was married to Louis Kaltenbrunn at St. Nazianz, by the late Rev. P.A. Mutz. After their marriage they bought the farm now occupied by Louis Adelman, where they lived until 1912 when they retired, making their home in the village of St. Nazianz. Fourteen children were born to the couple, four of whom died in infancy, and a daughter, Mrs. Anton Schleh died May 31, 1925. Her husband also preceded her in death in January, 1924. Survivors are five daughters, Mrs. Albert Christel of Valders R.1, Mrs. John Michels and Mrs. Joseph Gaerthoeffner of Sheboygan, Mrs. William Wollersheim of Kiel R. 2, and Mrs. Anton Eberle of Valders R. 1; four sons, Anton of Random Lake, Joseph and Louis of West Allis and Peter of Oakwood; 50 grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren, and one great, great-grandchild. Funeral services were held this Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Gregory's church and burial was made in the adjoining church cemetery. The Rev. Fintan Holzknecht officiated. Postnote: This is the obituary of my great-grandmother. I have researched the church records and she was married to her husband in August of 1875, not September of 1874 as the obituary states. Her husband was also known as Ludwig. *********** Kaltenbrun, Katharina nee Riesterer (April 4, 1852-Dec. 20, 1942 (has also been shown as "Catherine Hausherr Kaltenbrun") -wife of Ludwig Kaltenbrun [married Aug. 24, 1875 at St. Gregory Catholic Church in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton] -daughter of Peter Riesterer and Amalia -born Baden -immigrated directly to St. Nazianz in 1871 -died from "acute coronary occlusion -arteriosclerosis") -buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [buried in Section 3, Row 7, Lot 20 -stone] [marriage record Manitowoc 4-96] [death record Manitowoc 35-534]

LUDWIG KALTENBRUN (sent in by researcher-see contributors page) This obituary can be found in the Tri-County Record, Kiel, Wisconsin Vol. 31, No. 48. Issue - Thursday, January 31, 1924 - Page 4, Column 1 Ludwig Kaltenbrunn died at his home here on Friday night after an illness of four days with pneumonia. Deceased was born in Germany in 1851 and came to this country at the age of four years. In 1862 he came to St. Nazianz, settling on a farm four miles west of the village. He was married to Catherine Hausherr in 1875. Ten years ago the couple moved to this village where they have since resided. Mr. Kaltenbrunn's death was a shock and is a loss to the community, as he was a man of good character and was liked by all who knew him. He is also a great loss to the congregation as he was the president of the St. Nazianz Branch 109 of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin and was secretary of St. Gregory's congregation. It was only last week when he closed the books for 1923 and had everything in order. On last Tuesday he took sick with pneumonia. The end came unexpectedly on Friday evening. For many years he was janitor of the church. The funeral was held on Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. Deibele officiating. Burial was made in St. Gregory's cemetery. Besides his wife the following survive him: daughters, Mrs. Anton Schleh, Mrs. Albert Christel, Mrs. Jos. Gaerthoefner and Mrs. Anton Eberle of St. Nazianz; sons, Anton of Liberty, Joseph and Louis of West Allis and Peter of Racine; brother, Ambrose; and sisters Mrs. Helen Mutzbauer of Milwaukee and Mrs. Anton Schwoerer. All the children were here for the last sad rites. The out-of-town people not including the children who attended the funeral were: Misses Hattie and Louise Mutzbauer, and Joseph Mutzbauer of Milwaukee, Mr. and Mrs. J. Geigel, Reedsville; Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Schleh, Mr. and Mrs. John Schleh, J. Lutz and the Misses Catherine, Marie and Adeline Lutz of Sheboygan, and A. Connell of Chilton. The funeral was one of the largest held here for some time. Fourteen School Hill Catholic Knights and about 75 of the St. Nazianz branch and 20 members of the Holy Name society attended in a body. Also the Christian Mothers, besides other friends. The six sons of John Riesterer were pallbearers, being relatives of the deceased. Correction Postnote: This is the obituary of my great-grandfather. Ludwig's wife, Catherine is listed with a maiden name of Hausherr in this article. All research on vital records I have conducted to date list her maiden name as Riesterer - I believe this to be a misprint in the obituary. Also, his date of arrival in St. Nazianz is listed as 1862. My research shows that they arrived in America in July 1855 and I have a copy of Ludwig's sister Helen's birth in St. Nazianz in August of 1855. One daughter, Helen Mahnke (later Helen Michels) is omitted from the list of daughters surviving him. ************ Funeral services were held yesterday morning at St. Patrick's church for Ludwig Kaltenbrunn (sic), who died at his home here Satruday morning at 9 o'clock. JOHN KIRWAN From the Files of the Pilot – Twenty-Five Years Ago – 1894 John Kirwan of Meeme, father of Judge Kirwan of this city, died on Saturday last at the advanced age of 90 years. He was born in Clare county, Ireland and came to this country when a young man. He returned to Ireland and soon after again came to America and settled in Milwaukee from which place he moved to Meeme where he resided until the time of his death. There are few men who had a broader sympathy with humanity than had the subject of this sketch. His geniality was heightened by love of companionship and sense of humor which made association with him a genuine pleasure to young and old. He loved manly traits in young men and always saw what was good in the people with whom he came in contact. He was the charitable nature which never thought evil of anyone. His presence was suggestive of sunshine and his visits to his old neighbors were always a source of pleasure. He had the genuine Irish mirth but while sprightly, it was kindly, not sharp. His readiness of speech, command of language and sympathetic nature would have given him immense influence with men if he was ambitious of distinction. But he was essentially domestic in his habits and loved his immediate friends too well to attempt to play any part outside of their sphere. Liberal, generous and devoted, he has found a lodging place in the hearts of all who knew him. His modesty has not obscured his merits to the boys, now men, in whom he took a fatherly interest and who know the depth of affection of which he was capable. The announcement of his death may not attract wide attention but it opens up the past to many and the recollections awakened, sad because they are of the past, pleasant because of a man in whom we could wish no change – are a monument which any person might envy who values the love of his fellow man.
