DIONYSIUS MAHONEY Died—At the residence of his son, William, in this village, on Saturday morning, May 20th, 1876, Dennis Mahoney, aged 73 years.  The deceased was born in the town of Bandon, Co. Cork, Ireland and was the second eldest son of a family of eleven—Michael Mahoney, Esq., of Manitowoc being the youngest.  He emigrated to America thirty-one years ago and landed at St. John’s N.B. where he buried his only wife who died at sea.  He then proceeded to Boston and afterwards to Pierpoint, N.Y., and other places at the East, but finally removed to Jackson, Washington County, in this State, where he remained two years, when he concluded to make his home with his brother Michael at Manitowoc.  There he remained until about six years ago when he removed to Chilton and since that time resided with his son.  He was a living example of a good, just and true old style Irish gentleman, and as perfect a devotee to the faith of his fathers—the R. C. faith – at the same he was not a bigot, well knowing that the best way to have his solemn belief respected was to have respect for the opinions and beliefs of others.  He died the death of the righteous, and, if zeal for the discharge of religious duties will secure Eternal bliss in the future he, if anybody ever had, will have a quick and free passage to Heaven direct.  Appropriate services over his remains were observed at Chilton and at the Badish Settlement in Eaton, Manitowoc County, where he earthly remains were deposited.  His work was well done and thoroughly accomplished and while we regret his departure and sympathize with bereft relatives and mourning friends we cannot help thinking that the allotted time having arrived we should all unite in saying, “Tis Well.”  May his many noble virtues live forever and his faults, if he had any, be forgotten.   Chilton Times  May 26, 1876 ***** Name: Mahoney, Diony D.: 5/20/1876 B.: Reg. MARIA MAHONEY (d. 1867) DIED. In this village on Thursday, April 4, 1867, MARY, wife of Mr. Michael Mahoney, aged 30 years. Mrs. M. suffered a long and painful illness with that pious resignation indicative of the true Christian. Being a resident of the town for many years she had drawn around her a host of friends who admired her for her many virtues, all of whom deeply sympathize with the afflicted household, and keenly feel the loss of one who was always dear to them, and from whose circle she will be most lamentably missed. To her husband, three bright children, father, mother, brothers, and many relatives in this county, her loss is irreparable.—May the tender mercies of Heaven succor, console, and support them in this their dark huf of bitter bereavement. Her remains were buried at the Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, town of Eaton, whither they were accompanied by the largest number of people ever congregated for a similar purpose in this county. REV. AUGUSTINE MAIER MEYER—On Wednesday, October 26, 1881, of 9 a.m. in St. Nazianz, Manitowoc Co., Wis., Rev. Augustin Meyer. The deceased was born at Oberhausen Grandduchy Baden, Aug. 16, 1837, and lost his parents when he was three years old, but was taken care of by kind friends. On the 10th of November, 1864, he came to the place now known as St. Nazianz, then an unbroken wilderness. He worked hard to clear lands, make shingles etc., until 1868, when feeling the germs of disease, he hoped to conquer it by avoiding the work which proved too hard for him. Consequently he studied with the lamented Father Oschwald and Rev. Mr. Abet, and then at the St. John's College in Minnesota. His health did not improve but the deceased advanced rapidly in his studies. He was initiated at Leavenworth, Kansas, and celebrated his first mass July 13th, 1873. He had since been stationed at St. Mary's Academy near Leavenworth, until June 1880, when, on account of his poor health, he had to leave his place and come back to his old home, St. Nazianz. Suffering with consumption and asthma, finally dropsy set in, and destroyed a life which had been so useful. Very few were the happy days of his life, hard labor on the farm, and afterward hard studies and hard profession work were his lot. The funeral took place on Friday, October 28, with great attendance. Rev. George Fessler, of Silver Lake, and Rev. Roder, of Clark's Mills were in attendance, the latter officiating, assisted by Rev. Geo. Fessler and Augustin Durst, Rev. Roden preached an impressive funeral service and the remains was solemnly deposited in the last resting place. CANNOT LOCATE MCCARTY NOW
Cato Man Said to Have Returned After Fight But is Missing Again
Reported to have returned to Cato Sunday, Dan McCarty, who disappeared a week ago with a $3000 certificate of deposit, in which his brother claimed an interest, cannot be located by the officers and search has failed to reveal his whereabouts. McCarty was reported to have been enroute to Nebraska and was forced to return because of his inability to realize on the certificate and to secure funds. Sheriff Lambries was notified that McCarty was at Cato and a deputy was dispatched there Monday but upon arrival failed to trace the man.
McCarty and his brother, Charles, are under surveillance of probate court to appear March 19 to submit to an examination to determine their competency to administer their own affairs, relatives having filed a complaint alleging that the two are incompetent and citing that a farm valued at $7000 was sold for half the sum. Charles McCarty was given into the custody of a third brother, but Daniel McCarty immediately fled the county and when the report reached officers could not be apprehended. Sunday, after an absence of several days, the missing man reappeared at Cato and was to have been taken before the court but is now among the missing a second time. Failure to locate McCarty has caused some anxiety to relatives who claim that he is unable to take care of himself and they fear he may come to some harm. Sheriff Lambries will continue to search to locate McCarty under orders of the court and if he is found will be placed under restraint. Payment on the certificate has been stopped.

MARY MCCARTY IN SAME DEATH TRAP Mrs. Mary McCarty Loses Her Life At Fatal Railroad Crossing. IN VILLAGE OF BRANCH. Run Down by C. & N. W. Freight. Mother Is Killed Outright and Son Seriously Injured – Details. In a death trap created by the unprotected Chicago & Northwestern crossing at Branch, Mrs. Mary McCarty an aged resident of Cato, yesterday lost her life, and her son, Daniel received injuries that are of a serious nature. The accident happened late in the afternoon as Mrs. McCarthy and her son were on their way home from a visit to town. In crossing the tracks at Branch, the vehicle in which they were riding was struck by a south bound freight train and Mrs. McCarty was hurled to her death, the son escaping by a providence that was little less than a miracle. The scene of the accident was the crossing at Branch, where several other fatalities have occurred. The track is so situated that in approaching it is impossible to see it in either direction, and this was the case yesterday. Mr. McCarty, who was driving, was already on the track when he was made aware of the danger. The freight bearing down at a good speed. He urged his horse with a view to clearing the track, and might have succeeded, had not his mother, becoming frightened, grasped the lines and checked the animal. The engine struck the vehicle fairly and threw both occupants to the ground, the son retaining a hold on the horse and being dragged out of danger. Mrs. McCarty was killed outright and in examination of her injuries after the accident it was found that her skull had been crushed, the right arm fractured in three places, left arm broken at the wrist and bones in both limbs fractured. Mr. McCarty sustained injuries to the back and may have suffered internal injury, but it is thought he will recover in a short time. The train, which was in charge of conductor Schuette, was brought to a standstill and the crew went to the assistance of the unfortunate victims. The woman was found to be dead and the remains placed in the caboose to be brought to the city. Mr. McCarty was assisted aboard the train, and on arrival here was taken to Holy Family hospital where Dr. Pritchard, the company physician attended him. The body of Mrs. McCarty was taken to the Vogelsang & Murphy undertaking rooms and Coroner Meany notified. An inquest was called by Justice Falge, the jurors being C. A. Groffman, U. Gagnon, Robt. Puls, J. Reif, Frank Rose, Joseph Willinger. After viewing the remains, the inquiry was adjourned until this afternoon, when another adjournment was taken until Saturday at 9 a. m. Mrs. McCarty, who was the mother of Robert McCarty and Mrs. Richard McGuire, of this city, was 78 years of age and made her home with her sons, Daniel and Charles of Cato. The family came here in an early day and is widely known. Eleven children survive to mourn the sad death of their mother. They are Mrs. R. McGuire, city; Mrs. C. Conner, Liberty; Mrs. E. Holleran, Milwaukee; Mrs. Hanna McGuire, Nebraska; Mrs. K. Dillon, S. Dakota; and John, Thomas, Robert, Eugene, Daniel and Charles McGuire, all residents of this county. The accident yesterday is the sixth to occur at the Branch from the same condition. The neglect of the railroad company to provide protection at the crossing is little short of criminal and that some action has not long since been taken by the town officials is unexplainable. Several lives have been lost and more than one person permanently injured. Immediate action should be taken. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Wednesday, April 10, 1901, p. 1 (Karey's note: there were several follow articles about the investigation and censoring of the railroad company after the accident.) ***** CHICAGO AND NORTHWESTERN DEATH TRAP IS AGAIN ACTIVE Again, is the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad company death trap at Branch responsible for the untimely killing of an old woman. On Tuesday afternoon while Mrs. McCarty of Cato was on her way home from the city in company with her son Dan, she met death just as the team was crossing the fatal piece of rail. As the horses and wagon crossed the track a freight train swung around the curve and a collision occurred causing the old lady's death. Dan McCarty was internally injured but not fatally. He was taken to the Holy Family Hospital. Manitowoc Pilot, Wis., Thursday, April 11, 1901 pg. 1 ***** WARNED OF DEATH'S APPROACH Mrs. Mary McCarty, Victim of Fatality, Had Premonition of Evil Warned of Death's approach by a premonition of coming evil, Mrs. Mary McCarty, the unfortunate victim of the Branch fatality of Tuesday night, hesitated to return to her home in Cato at that time, and, but for a spirit of unrest that possessed her to disregard the promptings of mind, she might have escaped the sad death that befell. Mrs. McCarty had been a guest of her children in this city for several days previous and had made preparations to return home Wednesday. As the time approached for her departure, she grew uneasy and oppressed by a feeling that some danger threatened. In her conversation she made frequent reference to the "death trap" crossing at Branch and at noon had determined to make the return to Cato by rail. Later however, upon arrival of her son, she decided to accompany him, and they departed for home about 3 o'clock, the accident occurring an hour later. The injuries sustained by Mr. McCarty in the accident are of a more serious nature than was at first thought, and there is some anxiety felt as to his condition. The wagon in which the victims were making the journey was completely demolished by the force with which it was struck by the train, but the horses escaped injury. The remains of Mrs. McCarty have been removed to the home of her daughter, Mrs. McGuire and funeral services will be held Friday interment taking place at Cato. While returning from Manitowoc, Mrs. McCarty and her son were struck by a freight train killing Mrs. McCarty instantly. Mr. McCarty was injured quite badly and was taken to the hospital.
