AUGUST BENNIN Word was received here Thursday of the death of August Bennin of the town of New Holstein, which occurred that day at Gary, Ind., where he had been under observation and treatment since last fall. The deceased was born Dec. 11, 1878, in Johnsonville, Sheboygan County, a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Bennin. In the year 1905 he was united in marriage to Miss Clara Luelloff of St. Nazianz, and for a time was employed at the Luelloff store, later operating the St. Nazianz cheese factory. In 1927 he moved to a farm in the town of New Holstein where he resided up until the time of his death. Surviving his are his widow and the following children; Raymond of Forest Junction, Clemens of Greenwood, Valaria, Herman, Clarence, Josephine, Alice, August and Jerome at home, his aged mother; four sisters, Mrs. William Schneider of Chilton, Mrs. Math. Williams of Waldo, Mrs. Robert Caster of Shawano and Mrs. Christ Glassow of Hilbert; and four brothers, William of West Bend, John of Cascade, Christian of Elkhart Lake, Charles of St. Cloud, and a brother, Fred, whose whereabouts are unknown. Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock at St. Charles church, Charlesburg, with solemn high mass by the Rev. Binder, assisted by the Rev. Heckmann of Jericho and the Rev. Rauch of Francis Creek. Interment was made in the St. Charles cemetery. CLARA BENNIN Mrs. Clara Bennin, aged 54, passed away at her home in the town of New Holstein last Tuesday morning after an illness of about ten months duration. Mrs. Bennin, nee Clara Lulloff, was born in the town of Schleswig, on December 16, 1881, and her marriage to August Bennin took place at St. Nazianz on September 19, 1905. The couple made their home at St. Nazianz for 18 years, during which time Mr. Bennin was employed as a cheesemaker. From St. Nazianz Mr. and Mrs. Bennin moved to their present farm homestead in the town of New Holstein, near Charlesburg. Mr. Bennin preceded his wife in death on January 17, 1935, and one child died in infancy. Survivors include nine children, namely: Clemens of Crocker, Mo., Raymond, Herman, Clarence, Augustine, Jerome, Valeria, Josephine and Alice at home; her father Herman Lulloff, and two brothers, Fred Lulloff of Kiel, and William Lulloff of Mt. Calvary. Funeral services were held at 9:30 o'clock Friday morning at the St. Charles church at Charlesburg, with the Rev. Father Simon officiating, assisted by the Rev. Father Hunck and Father Rauch. Burial was made in the adjoining church cemetery. The member of the Christian Mothers' Society of Charlesburg attended the last rites in a body. EUGENE J. CHRISTEL Christel, Eugene J. (April 19, 1923-Aug. 2, 2004 -husband of Carol Jean Muellenbach [married Nov. 28, 1951 at St. Martin Catholic Church in the Town of Charlestown, Calumet County] -son of Joseph Christel and Rose Bushman -on March 31, 1958 purchased his parents' 100 acre farm at 8815 Greendale Road in Section 36, Town of Eaton -on Sept. 26, 1963 purchased the 158 acre farm centered at 9421 Glen Flora Road in Section 35, Town of Eaton from Lawrence Schweitzer -this farm then became part of his farm centered at 8815 Greendale Road -on Oct. 1, 1974 Eugene sold this now 258 acre farm to the Schuler Farms -on June 6, 1975 purchased the vacant lot at 202 West Court in St. Nazianz and had a house built -in the wind storm of May 12, 2000 this house was destroyed and a new house built -Eugene lived in this house until his death in 2004 -his widow Carol lived here until her death on July 19, 2011) -buried at the Knollwood Mausoleum, Town of Kossuth [marriage record Calumet 13-17] [death record Manitowoc 115-191]

MARY ANNA DUNBAR Liberty: Mrs. Ed. Dunbar died at her home in the town of Liberty, Monday morning Sept. 17, aged 45 years. She was born in Columbus, Ohio, Aug. 26, 1855 and moved to Wisconsin one year later. She was a very industrious woman, always anxious to reach the top. She was married to Edward Dunbar Nov. 13, 1878. She was very kind hearted and loved by all who knew her. Funeral was held Wednesday morning and the remains were interred in the cemetery at St. Nazianz. MARTIN DURST Durst, Martin (Nov. 9, 1825-March 12, 1914 (on birth record is shown as Johann Martin) -husband of Ernestine Stahl [married Jan. 17, 1861 at St. Gregory Catholic Church in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton] -this was likely the second marriage for Martin -when he came to America in 1856, he came with a young girl aged 9 years, who was named Margareth -she was likely a daughter from a first marriage -younger brother to Jacob Durst -son of Joseph Durst and Katharine Binkert -born Geisslingen, Waldshut, Baden -arrived in New York on May 23, 1854 aboard the boat Camillus -on July 15, 1862 purchased 40 acres in Section 26, Town of Eaton and created a farmstead at 19207 County Highway C -on Nov. 3, 1869 purchased the 40 acres of the NE1/4 of the NE1/4 of Section 27, Town of Eaton from Father Ambrose Oschwald -these 40 acres then became part of his farm centered at 19207 County C -owned this 80 acre farm until selling to Joseph Fohrenbach on Oct. 26, 1878 -with his wife and family, moved to Hewitt, Wood County in 1878 -"Martin Durst of Hewitt died last Thursday, March 12th at the home of his son Francis, where he made his home, it being the old homestead. He was born at Baden, Germany, Nov. 9, 1825, and was 88 years 4 months and 3 days old, and was a resident of Hewitt for 35 years. He immigrated to America in 1856, working on a farm near Brooklyn, N.Y., the first summer, and then went south to St. Louis, and worked on a steamboat on the Mississippi. After giving up river life he went to New Orleans, where he worked in a convent as gardener, but could not stand the climate, and then went to Milwaukee. FR. JOSEPH FESSLER Photo Fessler, Fr. Joseph (March 18, 1834-June 20, 1896 -single -eldest child of George Fessler and his second wife Elizabeth Sedler -born Oberhausen, Freiburg, Baden -although it has been written that Joseph arrived with Fr. Oschwald in New York in August of 1854, his name does not appear on the passenger list for either ship carrying the followers of Fr. Oschwald -he is not listed in the St. Nazianz records as arriving in the village until 1856 -became the first ordained priest from the Oschwald Community becoming ordained Nov. 5, 1865 and offering his first mass in the St. Ambrose Chapel of the Loreto Monastery on Nov. 12, 1865 -"He was 17 years old when he left Baden in 1854 with the original settlers. After the first trying months of the settlement in Wisconsin, he began to receive his preparatory studies for the priesthood from Father Oschwald himself.   KATHERINE KAUTZER Mrs. Catherine Kautza, 80, died Thursday morning at her home in St. Nazianz after an illness of three months. Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed but will be announced Saturday. Mrs. Kautza, nee Catherine Hoffman, was born Sept. 2, 1862 at Marytown, Wis. As a young woman she married Werner Schaefer. After his death she married Anton Kautza in 1905 and for some time lived in Chilton, later moving to a farm near Chilton, then to Aniwa and then to St. Nazianz, 22 years ago. Survivors are three sons from her first marriage, John, Anton and Jacob Schaefer, all of Milwaukee; five step-daughters, Mrs. Mary Salter of Milwaukee, Mrs. Charles Lutzke of Sheboygan, Mrs. Frank Zettler of Athens, Mrs. Charles Packard of Chilton and Mrs. Alfred Barth of Milwaukee; five step-sons, Frank Kautza of Sheboygan, John Kautza of Chilton, William and Henry Kautza of Aniwa and Albert Kautza of Racine. There are also several step-grandchildren, one of whom (Survivor omitted for privacy.), Mrs. Kautza raised as her own daughter. Mrs. Kautza was a member of the Christian Mother's sodality of St. Gregory's parish of St. Nazianz. JOHN KNORR Two From County Killed in Vietnam Area Casualty Toll Now 18 (photo of each young man) Two Manitowoc County servicemen have become casualties of the Vietnam war, their parents were informed Tuesday. The latest victims are Sp-4 Robert Lee Baumgart, 21, of Rt. 1, Mishicot, and Sgt. John R. Knorr, 21, of Rt 3, Manitowoc. Specialist Baumgart's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Baumgart, were informed by authorities of the United States Army Reserve at Manitowoc that their son died Monday in Saigon. He was in Phu Cohg with Co. B., 92nd Engineers Battalion, construction. Sgt. Knorr, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy A. Knorr, died Sunday in Vietnam of a gunshot wound from hostile small arms fire while a passenger in a military vehicle on combat operations. 18 County Casualties He was a member of Battery C of the 6th battalion of the 29th field artillery and had been stationed just outside Dak To. Manitowoc County traffic officers informed the family of his death. The two deaths brought to 18 the total number of Manitowoc County youths killed in Vietnam. Knorr entered the Army in January of 1967 and trained at Fort Polk, La., and Fort Sill, Okla., before going to Vietnam in June of 1967. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant last December and was scheduled to return home in June for a 45-day leave. He was a 1966 graduate of St. Gregory Catholic High School, St. Nazianz, and was employed at the Pine River Dairy of Rt. 1, Manitowoc, before entering service. He was born Dec. 29, 1946, at Chilton. His family moved to St. Nazianz in 1960. Survivors include his parents; a brother (private), a sister (private). Knorr was engaged to marry (private). Joined With Buddies Baumgart enlisted in the U.S. Army under the buddy system with (private) two other graduates of Mishicot Community High School. All three were in Vietnam, a short distance from one another. In his last letter to his parents, dated April 22, he said he was counting the 169 days until his military discharge in October. He had spent 18 months in Germany before going to Vietnam Oct. 6, 1967.
