EMRICK BELGUM Embrick (sic) M. Belgum, 85, retired farmer, died Sunday night of a heart attack at his home in the village of Mishicot. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Knutson funeral home in Denmark, the Rev. Edward Zell officiating. Burial will be in the Jambo Creek cemetery. Mr. Belgum came to this county from Norway when a boy. He engaged in farming in the town of Mishicot. He married Miss Margaret Ploeckelmann, who died 38 years ago. Survivors are two sons, Reuben of Detroit, Mich., Levi, of route 3, Manitowoc; two daughters, Mrs. R.M. Dawley of Stevens Point, Mrs. A.H. Jaehnke, of Milwaukee; and four grandchildren. The body is at the Denmark funeral home. Manitowoc Herald Times, Manitowoc, Wis. Wednesday, September 22, 1943 P. 2 ******** Ill Luck Continues Another Misfortune Befalls Belgan Family at Mishicott Ill luck continues to follow the Emerick Belgun family at Mishicott, the wife and mother of which recently wandered from home and died in the woods from exposure and starvation. The latest misfortune to befall the family is the serious injury to a son who is now confined to the home with a severe fracture of a limb which he suffered as a result of wrestling while at school. the body was taken home by companions and will probably recover without serious effects from the injury. Mr. Belgun, the father, is a well known farmer of the county and has the sympathy of a large circle of friends in his troubles. Manitowoc Daily Herald - Wed., Oct. 23, 1907 ********* Embrick M. MAGGIE BELGUM (From the correspondent in Mishicott, 10 Sep.) News was circulated last Friday that Mrs. E. Belgom, a local resident, had disappeared from her home during the night and could not be found despite the efforts of her husband and neighbors. Mrs. Belgom appears to be mentally disturbed. A few months ago she wandered away from home but was returned by neighbors. She is the mother of 4 children of whom the youngest is 5 years old. A brother of Mrs. Belgom, Mr. F. Ploekelmann, lives in Menominee, Michigan, and it is possible that she was attempting to go there. Der Nord Westen, 12 Sep. 1907 ******** MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE Last Thursday Mrs. Emerick Belgum, wife of a farmer living a short distance north and west of Mishicot, disappeared from her home and has not since been seen or heard from, although diligent search and inquiry have been made for her. She is, we are informed, a daughter of a farmer named Ploeckelman who, a few years ago, first killed his wife and then himself during a fit of temporary insanity, and it is believed by many that her mind has never recovered from the shock this domestic tragedy gave her and it is feared that she has either committed suicide or wandered away in a demented condition. Yesterday the sheriff and district attorney went out to Mishicot to investigate, as there had rumors reached them that foul play was suspected. Their investigation however satisfied them that there was no truth in such rumors and that the woman has either ended her own life or is now wandering about in a demented state. The neighbors have aided in the search for the missing woman but up to the present writing nothing has been found that helps to reveal the mystery of her disappearance. --Two Rivers Chronicle. Manitowoc Pilot, Wis., Thursday, September 12, 1907 pg. 1 ***** Notes From Mishicot: Last Friday night Mrs. Belgum mysteriously disappeared. It is supposed that she left her home through a window. When she disappeared, she was clad only in her nigh clothes. Fourteen men searched the woods and fields for her. The dam of the river was also closed up as it was thought she might have jumped in the river, but her body could not be found. District Attorney Kelley was called here on Monday to investigate the matter. As yet no trace of the missing woman can be found. Manitowoc Pilot, Wis., Thursday, September 12, 1907 pg. 8 ***** Woman's Mysterious Disappearance Left Home a Week Ago Thursday and Her Fate is Still Unknown Probably insane, Mrs. Embric M. Belgum, Mishicot, either is wandering about the country in rags or she is dead in the river. On Thursday night the woman left her home, one and one-half miles northwest of Mishicot and she has not been seen since, altho a posse of forty people have scoured the vicinity for miles. It is believed the woman is demented. Her mental condition is believed to be due to brooding over the violent death of her father and mother which occurred some years ago. The father shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself. Since that time, Mrs. Belgum has constantly betrayed signs of mental weakness. A few weeks ago the woman left her home and she wandered about the country for a day and a night. She was found by members of the family. When she was found, she was near the schoolhouse sleeping, her head resting upon a bible which she had taken with her from her home. Since that time a close watch has been kept over her. She ever explained the cause of her strange actions. On Thursday night, she slept with her eldest daughter, a girl 11 years of age. Before retiring, the woman opened one of the windows. This again was closed but at 9:40 o'clock, the father was awakened by the slamming of a door. The family was aroused, the daughter with whom Mrs. Belgum had been sleeping, not having been aroused when her mother left the room. A search was begun at once but no trace has been found of the women even tho the search has been kept with unrelenting zeal from the moment of the disappearance. Monday District Attorney Kelley was called to Mishicot but he could do nothing to aid in the discovery of the missing woman. At the Belgum home, there are four children, the youngest six years of age, scarcely able to comprehend the situation, longing for the mother's return. The father and husband is grief stricken and unceasingly he keeps up the search, hopeful that in some unexplored cranny he will find his wife. Neighbors, however, shake their heads gloomily. When she left home, Mrs. Belgum wore the oldest clothing she could find; a faded gray-blue calico dress with black spots, a blue apron, no stockings, a dilapidated pair of slippers and a red and white underskirt were some of the garments she wore. She chose these in preference to plenty of new garments which she could have taken. She is 39 years of age and she weighs about 125 pounds. Her hair is auburn and her eyes are blue. The Reporter - Sat., Sept. 13, 1907 ******** The missing Mrs. Belgom of Mishicott still has not been found. A $45 reward has been posted. Der Nord Westen, 19 Sep. 1907 ******** Local and Personal: No trace of Mrs. E.M. Belgum, the Mishicot woman who mysteriously disappeared about two weeks ago, has as yet been found. A large party of Mishicot people made a search for her last Sunday, but to no avail. Manitowoc Pilot, Wis., Thursday, September 19, 1907 pg. 5 ***** BELGAN (sic) PAYS REWARD MONEY Coroner's Jury Says Death of Wife Due to Exposure, Etc. "Death due to exposure and starvation was the verdict of the coroner's jury which investigated the death of Mrs. Emerick Belgan, the Mishicott woman whose body was found in the woods Sunday after three weeks' search and the sensational rumors in connection with the case are set at rest by the verdict, that jury having found nothing to support the report. The woman's hands were colored from berry stains, showing that she had subsisted on berries in the woods and the legs were scratched and lacerated from contact with the bushes and undergrowth through which she had trumped. A reward of $25 which Mr. Belgan had offered for information relative to his wife's whereabouts or the recovery of the body, will be paid to Ira Stoeltzer and Wm. Ingland, the two young men who found the body. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Tuesday, October 1, 1907 P. 1 ******** (From the correspondent in Mishicott, 01 Oct.) Mrs. W. Belgom, who has been missing from her home for the past three weeks, was found dead in Joseph Beresch’s bushes on Sunday by Messrs. J. Stelzer and Engeland while they were rabbit hunting. Medical examination established that she has only been dead for a few days, and it is surmised that she had hidden herself in the bushes the entire time and eventually died of exhaustion. The body was taken to the Belgom residence from where her funeral will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Norwegian Church. Der Nord Westen, 03 Oct. 1907 ******** Notes From Mishicot: The body of Mrs. E.M. Belgum, the missing woman who mysteriously disappeared from her home over three weeks ago, was found last Sunday morning by Ira Stelzer and Wm. Ingland while out hunting. The body was found about three miles from Mishicot on the farm of Mr. Baensh. She was thinly clad when she left home and there was scarcely any clothing on her body when it was found. Her lower limbs were considerably lacerated and her body was very much emaciated. A general and thorough search for her was made, yet not trace of her could be found. An inquest was held on Monday. The verdict of the jury was that she came to her death from exposure and starvation. The funeral took place on Tuesday. BENJAMIN D. KNUTSON FARMER IS KILLED IN CRASH, BOY FATALLY HURT GIBSON MAN AUTO VICTIM AT BOLT, WIS. Ben Knudson(sic), 72, Killed When Car Driven By Milwaukee Man Goes Into Ditch Going off the road a mile south of Bolt, Kewaunee county, right at the Manitowoc county line, an automobile owned and driven by Walter Kunkel, 22, Milwaukee and with four other passengers rolled over twice Sunday afternoon and resulted in the death of Benjamin Knudson, 72, a town of Gibson farmer. Kunkel is Held. Kunkel is being held by the sheriff of Kewaunee county, pending the outcome of the coroner’s jury hearing, which is being held this afternoon at Bolt, the scene of the crash. According to reports of the accident, Kunkel swerved over to the left side of the road when his wheels caught in the loose gravel and he lost control of the machine. The car rolled over in the ditch and Knudson, who suffered a fractured skull and broken neck, died almost instantly. He was sitting in the back seat of the machine. Kunkel was badly bruised and had a broken hand and severe scalp wounds. Peter Viehweg, 40, of Milwaukee, a companion of the driver of the car and his four year old son were not badly hurt. The fifth occupant of the car, Arthur Reimers, a brother in law of Knudson, suffered a dislocated shoulder. Boy Thrown Clear. The Milwaukee parties had come up from Milwaukee on Saturday to visit over the weekend with the Knudsons in the town of Gibson. Reports of the accident state that the four year old son of Viehweg was thrown clear of the car when it tipped over and landed in the field some distance from the scene of the wreck but was unhurt. When the Kunkel car stopped, it rested with the wheels up in the air. Passing motorists came to the assistance of the party of four penned in the machine and assisted them out of the machine. Knudson was dead but Kunkel and Reimers were rushed to the Kewaunee hospital. The coroner and district attorney at Kewaunee decided that an inquest would be held at Bolt this afternoon. Knudson is a prominent well to do farmer in the town of Gibson, Manitowoc county. He is survived by a wife and one daughter, Mabel. Funeral arrangements have not been made as yet. DORIS ROBINSON Notes from Fischerville One by one the old pioneers of this country are answering the roll call. Mrs. George Robinson being one of the victims who passed away after a lingering illness of but a few weeks' duration. Her death was due to infirmities incident to old age, although she has been in perfect health practically all her life time, until some weeks past her health began to fail and however, her condition grew for the worse and she suddenly passed away. The deceased was born in Hamburg, Germany on March 7, in the year of 1843 and came to America with her parents at the age of 9 years, having made their home at Manitowoc and remained there for seven years. After the seven years had passed they then purchased a farm and settled down in the Town of Kossuth, having resided there for some time. Her maiden name was Miss Mary Bartel. She then married George Robinson and the young couple then bought a farm in Gibson where they made their permanent home up to the time of the death of each. Her husband died some thirty-three years ago and was a Civil War veteran. Since the death of her husband she has made her home on the present farm with her son, Charles, who has had charge of the place since and who has always done a good term for her. She was 76 years of age and was the mother of 13 children, 38 grandchildren and 64 great grandchildren. The following are the names of her children who are left to mourn the mother's death: Mrs. Mary Klein of Two Rivers; George Robinson of Kewaunee; Mrs. Lizzie Richter of Sheboygan, John Robinson of Oconto, Edw. HENRY WILLERT FRANCIS CREEK MAN KILLED BY BLOW ON HEAD IN MOVING BARN HENRY WILLARD STRUCK BY SWEEP OF CAPSTAN POLE AND SKULL CRUSHED. BRAINS SPATTERED ON GROUND. Henry Willard, aged 35, a well known farmer of Francis Creek, was instantly killed early today by a blow on the head from the arm of a windlass which he was operating in the moving of a barn on his farm. Willard's skull is believed to have been fractured by the blow and when workmen employed with him reached the man, he was dead. Willard and a crew of men were at work moving a large barn, the dead man directing the work at the time the fatal accident accident happened at 8 o'clock this morning. The apparatus for the work consists of a windlass from which extends a long arm to which is attached a horse which draws the building by a rope or chain which is wound about the windlass or capstan. It is necessary for one man to watch the rope or chain and Willard was at this work when in some manner the arm of the windlass broke and the heavy timber struck Willard in the head, killing him almost instantly. Willard never uttered a cry and when workmen rushed to his side, he had expired. The side of the man's head was crushed in by the heavy timber. The blow which Willard received was one of terrific force and crushed his head like an egg shell. The head was torn open and the brains of the dead man were scattered about the ground for a radius of twenty feet or more. The head and face were badly mutilated and the sight that greeted workmen who rushed to his assistance was a ghastly one. A messenger was hastily dispatched for a physician while another was sent to the home to break the news of the tragedy to the wife and two children of the dead man. Physicians said that death had probably resulted instantly and that Willard had not known what struck him. The body was removed to the house. No inquest will be necessary, the tragedy having been the result of accident. Mr. Willard was a former Two Rivers man and had been at Francis Creek engaged in farming for some time. He was 35 years of age and was one of the progressive farmers of the county, and was highly respected. Mr. Willard was married and the father of two children, who with the widow survive. Funeral arrangements have not been made but the burial will probably be at Francis Creek. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, May 26, 1913 p.1 ******** The funeral of the late Henry Willert aged 35 years, a local farmer and who was killed instantly by being struck by the sweep of the windlass used in moving a barn on his farm last Monday, was held Thursday from the late home and interment was at the cemetery near Jambo Creek in the town of Gibson. Mr. Willert though a resident of this section for only about two years, made many friends who were very sorry to hear of his tragic death. His neighbors spoke of him in the best of terms. We extend our sympathy to the famiy of widow and two sons, in their sad bereavement. Manitowoc Daily Herald, June 3, 1913 P. 3 ******** (From the Gibson Evang.
