RILEY OLSON A stroke took the life of Riley Olson in Clarks Mills on Fri. Mr. Olson, widely known resident of our county, was born 55 yrs. ago in Valders, Norway, came to America and to Manitowoc County as a child and has lived here ever since. He allied himself with the Republican Party and has filled several offices. At the time of his death he was postmaster of Clarks Mills. He is survived only by a 14-yr. old daughter, his wife having preceded in death several years ago. The funeral was held Sun. Der Nord Westen, 22 Mar. 1900 ******** DEATH OF RILEY OLSON Riley Olson, well known throughout the county and for many years a resident of Clarks Mills, died very suddenly at his home last Friday morning. The Wednesday preceding he had been in the city and seemed in his usual health. He had called at two or three business offices and appeared to be as vigorous as ever. Thursday afternoon he was seized with what appeared to be an apoplectic stroke, and never rallied. He died early the following morning. The physicians stated the cause of his death was the bursting of a blood vessel in the brain. Mr. Olson was an old resident of this county. Though he was born in Norway he came to this country when quite young, and soon after settling at Clarks Mills began to take an active interest in public affairs. Though never a politician he held a number of town and county offices, and always rendered excellent service. He was thoroughly respected by all who knew him and his sudden death has caused much sorrow among his acquaintances. STEPHEN OLSON From the Files of the Pilot – Twenty-Five Years ago (1892) Stephan Olson of Cato died on Tuesday of this week somewhat suddenly. He was 73 years old at the time of his death. He was the founder of the Oslo Woolen Mills and had a grist mill at the same place. He was a traveler of large experience, having crossed the ocean five times. He settled in this county in 1846. Manitowoc Pilot - Thurs, Mar. 15, 1917 ******** COUNTY HAD FIRST COLONY Norwegian Settlements in the Northwest Were First Established Here STEPHEN OLSON, FOUNDER Prof. Veblen Tells of Early Days of Norwegians Here Manitowoc County was the home of the first large Norwegian colony to locate in the Northwest and the settlement established by the pioneers in 1854 along the banks of the Manitowoc River in the towns of Liberty, Eaton and Cato is still retained by descendants, others having been but little, geographically. The very first settlement of Norwegians in the county was at Silver Lake but the community whose establishment marks the first history of that people in Manitowoc and in the Northwest, was at Valders, the name being adopted from the home county of the pioneers in their native land. This interesting information was given in the address which was delivered before the Historical Society at the library Friday evening by Prof. Veblen who is in the county compiling records touching upon the pioneer Norwegians and their settlement. An audience of thirty attended the lecture which was a connected story of the immigration and settlement in this county. Stephen Olson Hellli was the founder and leader of the first settlement, said the speaker and he paid high tribute to the memory of the man, declaring that in the annals of Norwegian history of the Northwest, no man was entitled to a higher place in the estimation of Norwegians. Mr. Olson came to this county in 1846, one of the very first Norwegians to settle here and two years later he returned to his native land and was accompanied on the return here by a large colony which was the founding of Valders. In 1852, Mr. Olson made a second trip to Norway and again returned with a following and it was this settlement which was the real founding of Norwegians in the Northwest. From 1848 to 1855 was the period of the important immigration to this county from Norway and among pioneers mentioned by the speakers, as the early settlers here were the Berges, Gigstads and the Obergs, the latter residents of this city. Economic conditions, more than anything else was the cause of immigration form Norway said the speaker, who declared that a large majority of the early Norwegian settlers here were those who in Norway had owned their own lands and were in comfortable circumstances. The growth of the country had been greater than the development of resources. The early Norwegians were religious and the speaker declared that there was not many among the early settlers who was unable to read, though many could not write. The first church was established at Jerpen and Rev. Paul Anderson and Rev. Ottosen were the pioneer ministers. Prof. Veblen told of the personal experiences of Prof. Larsen, later President of Luther College, who was engaged in the pioneer work here. Mr. Veblen said that many of the Norwegians today are not known by their proper names, a fact which he said was due to changes made when the pioneers secured naturalization papers in early days. The court officials in many cases were unable to pronounce the name or spell it and frequently a change would be made which gave the citizen a name different from that which he was known in Norway. The speaker gave an interesting explanation of the system of adopting names of Norwegians. An interesting statement of Prof. Veblen was that Norwegians in their native country are land owners, even small farmers being possessor of his own property which is handed down to the son and remains in possession of the family. The son may always claim title to the property, the parent having no right to dispose of it. Valders, the community from which the large majority of Norwegians of Manitowoc County came, is a settlement of 17,000 and in the United States there are more than 25,000 who trace their nativity to that place. Prof. Veblen, in conclusion told of the movement that is on to preserve records of Norwegian settlements in the United States and expressed the hope that some time in the immediate future this work might be advanced to preparation of a history that would take its place with that of other countries and nations. Prof. Veblen is a charming speaker and his audience enjoyed the meeting. Emil Raensch,, president, tendered the thanks of the society. With the death of Mrs. Anna Riss, wife of Andrew Riss, at Jerpen Saturday evening Manitowoc county loses another of its pioneers. LOUIS JOHNSON RIIS LOUIS RIIS, CATO FARMER, FOUND DEAD IN WOODS NEAR HOME Man Had Been Missing Since Wednesday and Probably Lost His Way on Return Trip to Home Missing since Wednesday night, Louis Johnson Riis, a town of Cato farmer, was found dead in the wood near his home Sunday afternoon, a victim of cold and exposure. Riis is believed to have lost his way while returning home and succumbing to the cold was unable to help himself or to summon help. Riis' body was found in the woods on the farm of Thomas Ryan, a son of the owner of the land, who had joined a party of searchers who were seeking trace of the missing man at the request of his relatives. There were no marks of violence on the body and nothing to indicate that Riis met his death through accident. An empty bottle, believed to have contained liquor the use of which Riis is said to have been addicted was found on the body. District Atty Healy and Coroner Falge in this city were notified of the finding of the body late Sunday afternoon and Coroner Falge visited the scene today and made an examination of the body deciding that no inquest was necessary as the cause of death was plainly established as exposure. The body was turned over to relatives and will be buried in Cato. Riis was last seen alive Wednesday night at a cheese factory near the home of his brother and when he failed to put in an appearance at the farm that night and the next day, relatives instituted inquiries. It was thought that the man might have come to this city, as he frequently left without advising the family of his intentions, but inquiry here failed to gain a trace of him and Sunday searching parties were organized and the body found. Riis was 52 years of age and unmarried, making his home with his brother, John Riis in Cato. Mrs. J. Wilkie of this city is a sister. Vivian & Lew faithfully attended their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren's activities. She began the art of carving when she was age 80. OLE STEPHENSON O. STEPHENSON DIES AFTER A HEART ATTACK Former Grist Mill And Wool Carding Plant Operator Passes Sunday Night Ole Stephenson, 77, operator of a grist mill and later a wool carding plant at Oslo, town of Cato, for nearly 50 years, died Sunday night at the home, 1156 North Eighth street. When a young man his parents moved to Oslo, where his father built a flour and grist mil which he operated for years. After the death of his father Mr. Stephenson continued the mill. In 1907 the mill was destroyed by fire. Mr. Stephenson then established the Oslo Woolen mills, a wool carding plant which he conducted until 1929 when he move to this city. He continued this business at his home here. Married In 1901 Although he took an interest in county and town politics Mr. Stephenson never held public office. In 1901 he married Amelia Gunderson. The body is at the Frazier mortuary. Manitowoc Herald Times Monday, April 6, 1936 pg. 2 ******** [3/1/1859 - 4/5/1936] ******** OSLO MILLS DAM WASHED OUT THURSDAY Some Animal, Probably Mink, Started Undermining LOSS IS SERIOUS; STOPS TWO MILLS Damages to the extent of several hundreds of dollars have been caused by the washing out of the Oslo Mills dam west of the city, the damage being not only to the dam but to the owner of the two mills, Ole Stephensen, the operations of which are suspended until another power can be substituted for water. The washing out of the dam was caused by some animal, the identity of which is not as yet discovered, which undermined the dam by digging a small hole. The leak began at about 7 o'clock Thursday evening and when discovered was beyond repair and a hole the size of a barrel had been washed out through which the entire mill pond consisting of nine feet of water had been drained. The leak was first seen by Mrs. Nels Stephensen of this city who is a visitor at the Stephensen home and was not however, aware of its serious import. Later, when the water drained rapidly it was took late to stop it and the entire pond was washed out and the two mills put out of commission. It is thought that a mink caused the damage. The loss is a serious one to Charles Stewart who recently acquired the water power and may have the effect of hastening the start of the installation of the apparatus by which he intends to utilize the water power. It was contemplated by Mr. Stewart to drain the pond when he began his operations at the places and the inadvertent assistance to his plans may cause him to start at once rather the make repairs and drain the river again later. Mr. Stewart had not been informed of the incident this noon, Mr. Stephensen coming to town to apprise him and journeying to Two Rivers to meet him there. Because of the heavy downpour of rain last night, residents of the Rapids thought nothing of the rising of the water and though the river was raised several inches and the water was flowing over the dam there, it was attributed to the rain. The mill pond is filled with fish swimming about in the low water and to catch them is an easy matter. The fish for the most part are carp however, and not considered edible. The feed and grist mill at Oslo will be shut down for the present being engaged in grinding peas and not very busy just at this time but the woolen and carding mill suspend operations only for a few days, Mr. Stpehensen having already made plans for the substitution of other power to run the mill. Patrons will not be inconvenienced for any length of time and the mill will be running shortly, declares Mr. Stephensen. Manitowoc Daily Herald - Fri., July 22, 1910

SIDNEY TERKELSON SYDNEY O. TERKLESON IS DEAD; 29 Death Takes One of City's Best Known Young Men Friday The uncertainty of human life, the futility of human ambition and the unpitying degree of Fate has never been more forcibly illustrated and brought home to Manitowoc than in the announcement Friday evening of the death of Sydney O. Terkleson, one of the city's best known and popular young men to whom death came after a brief illness at the home of his mother, N. Ninth Street. Mr. Terkleson had been ill for several weeks and the past few days his condition had precluded all possibility of recovery. Mr. Terkelson's death is pathetically sad, a life of bright promise to friends and robbing a widow mother of her only son. Mr. Terkleson was a native of this county born at Rapids 29 years ago and always having made his home here. He attended the schools of the latter ten years ago when with his mother and three sisters he removed to the city and had since resided here. Attending the North Side school he later graduated from the County Training School for teachers and then entered the Stevens Point Normal for a time. Taking up teaching as a profession, Mr. Terkleson was forced to give up his school after a few months because of his health and entered the employ of Schuette Bros. co. as an office man, continuing with the company for seven years. A few months ago Mr. Terkleson became an employee of the Julius Lindstedt Co. as a solicitor. In Sept. he suffered an attack of illness that forced him to give up his work and the past few weeks had confined him to his home. His condition became gradually worse and the past few days, death's shadow has hovered about him and Friday evening, its mantle was thrown about him and he passed out of life. Sydney Terkleson was a young man of exemplary character possessed of a frank, genial nature, of social inclination and easy to make friends he had won the esteem of all with whom he came in contact and the announcement of his untimely death will call forth sincere sorrow and widespread sympathy for those called to mourn his demise. He was faithful and conscientious and in his various business relations had established a reputation that would have been a stepping stone to future success. Terkleson is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary Terkleson and three sisters, Hilda and Jessie, this city and Mrs. C.S. Halverson, Clinton, Wash. Funeral arrangements have not been completed but the services will be in charge of Rev. Sheppley of the Presbyteerian church with which Mr. Terkleson had been identified and the body will be taken to Madson Station for interment. Manitowoc Daily Herald - Sat., Dec. 10, 1910 ******** Funeral services for the late Sydney Terkelson were held at the home on North 8th St., Wednesday at 11:30 the body then taken to Madson Station for burial. The Presbyterian choir was present and rendered selections, Rev. Sheppley officiating. There were many beautiful floral offerings. Manitowoc Daily Herald - Thurs., Dec. 15, 1910 ******** Card of Thanks To friends who by their sympathy and kindness sought to lighten our burden of sorrow on the death of our beloved son and brother, we desire to express our heartfelt thanks and we are especially grateful for the flowers sent during his illness and for the funeral. ALVINA WROLSON WOMAN FOUND MURDERED IN HOME ON FARM NEAR BRANCH, HUSBAND IS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY TODAY. OSCAR WROLSON, 45, TAKEN INTO CUSTODY HERE HOURS AFTER CRIME IS REPORTED. Woman Found Dead on Floor with Gash in Head and Evidence that She Had Been Strangled-Drink and Jealousy Blamed for Crime Oscar Wrolson, 45, farmer on the Snake road west of State Trunk Highway 42, seven miles from the city, is a prisoner at the county jail facing a murder charge following a brutal attack upon his wife which caused her death at their home early this morning. Mrs. Wrolson was found with a gash in her head, marks of a hand about her throat and a towel which had been used as a gag, in her mouth, by neighbors dispatched to the home by Wrolson after he fled from the scene of the crime. Wrolson was taken into custody by Sheriff Edward Kasten several hours after the crime and in vicinity of the county jail in this city which he had passed and repassed possibly with the idea of giving himself up, but lacking nerve to do so. According to report after slaying his wife and visiting the home of a neighbor, Wrolson made his way to this city on foot, telephoned his daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Johnson, 1610 Washington street, that her mother was seriously ill, hired a taxi to get Mr. Johnson from his work at the ship yards and then dispatched Mr. and Mrs. Johnson to the Wrolson home, refusing to accompany them, although he urged them to hasten to the home. The theory is that Wrolson had planned to surrender himself or to end his own life before he believed the crime would be discovered. The man offered no resistance when Sheriff Kasten recognizing the man from description furnished by neighbors, accosted him in front of the Rahr plant. Wrolson was taken to the jail and locked up and is said later to have confessed to killing his wife. Jealousy and Drink? The alleged murder is believed to have been the outcome of jealousy and drink. Wrolson is said to have been insanely jealous of his wife, especially at times when he was under liquor and had been in a quarrelsome mood last night. Mrs. Wrolson, according to report, was not anxious to return home and leave the party at the time her husband signified his intention of so doing and this, according to the statement of the son, led to the opening of the quarrel on the way to the home. The tragedy occurred some time after 2:30 this morning when the Wrolsons, after returning from a dance at Branch, renewed a quarrel in the house which had started on the way home when Wrolson threw his wife to the ground and is believed to have inflicted an injury at that time as blood was found in the snow where the woman had laid. There were no witnesses to the death of Mrs. Wrolson which authorities declare was unquestionably a plain case of murder to which it is reported Wrolson has made a signed confession. Son Summons Aid Lee Donald, ten year old son of the couple who had been with his parents at the dance at Branch, gave the first intimation of trouble at the Wrolson home when he rushed to the house of Elmer Hargarves, nearby, and told of the quarrel which was taking place at the home. The boy later told of his father having struck his mother while the couple were proceeding to their residence from the Hargraves home after the dance, Mr. and Mrs. Hargraves having accompanied them to the dance. While Mr. Hargraves was learning the boy’s story Wrolson rapped at the door and said he was seeking his son and asked Hargraves to assist him in the search, suggesting that the latter go to the Wrolson home while he would visit the farm of a brother-in-law for the supposed missing boy. It was when Hargraves complied with the suggestion and visited the Wrolson house that the crime was revealed. Hargraves Story of Evening. Mr. and Mrs. Wrolson and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hargraves had been associating for many months and had been in the habit of going out together once or twice a week, one and then the other using the family car. They had planned on going to the dance last night at the Radey hall at Branch in the Wrolson car. When Wrolson arrived at the Hargraves home he honked his horn but was told to wait a minute as the Hargraves were not quite ready to start. A few minutes later the Hargraves came out and got into the car and Wrolson and his wife exchanged greetings with them. When Wrolson attempted to start the car it refused to respond and after repeated efforts it was decided to use the Hargraves car and leave the other. At the dance, Hargraves said Wrolson became quarrelsome and had a queer yellow light shining in his eyes. Nothing occurred on the way home at about 2:30 and when they arrived at the Hargraves place Mr. and Mrs. Wrolson and their son started for home around the road. It was after leaving Hargraves that the quarrel occurred. Mr. Hargraves, who found the body of the dead woman, said that when the Wrolson boy told of the quarrel, he had hesitated to go to the Wrolson home to interfere, the boy despite his fright, saying that he did not believe his mother would be hurt. He decided, however, to investigate and about ready to leave his home when Wrolson knocked at the door and Hargraves said that the excited manner of the man and his incoherent talk led him to fear that there had been serious trouble. When Wrolson was admitted to the Hargraves home he threw his arms about Hargraves, begging his aid in searching for the boy and appeared to be on verge of hysteria, hugging and kissing Hargraves and declaring it was probably the last time the latter would see him. In answer to a question “what have you done now,” Wrolson said that there had been a quarrel at home and that he must find his boy. Finds Woman’s Body Hargraves lighted a gas lantern and started for the Wrolson home, found the place on the road where Mrs. Wrolson was struck down and became alarmed. Arriving at the home he went into the kitchen and called and then found Mrs. Wrolson dead on the bed room floor. A pool of blood was near the kitchen stove and indications were the body had been dragged from the kitchen into the bedroom, a distance of only a few feet. Hargraves immediately returned home and telephoned the sheriff and spread the alarm in an effort to have Wrolson apprehended. Wrolson was later traced to Branch and then to this city and was taken into custody by Sheriff Kasten. Couple married at Jerpen Mrs. Wrolson before her marriage was Alvina Osulson. She was married to Wrolson at the Jerpen church twenty-five years ago and the couple have always made their home on farms in the vicinity of Branch. Wrolson was respected as a good neighbor and a hard worker and Hargraves said he was unable to account for Wrolson’s action unless it was due to drink, and said the man had been drinking. The couple are parents of two children, Mrs. Lloyd Johnson, who lives in this city, and a son, Lee Donald, who was at home. Three brothers, Theodore, Sam and Thomas Osulson, all living near the Wrolson home, and a sister, Mrs. Orley Whaley of Spear Fish, South Dakota, also survive Mrs. Wrolson. No Inquest The district attorney who visited the scene of the crime in company with Sheriff Edward Kasten and Dr. W. G. Kemper, the county coroner, said he did not believe an inquest would be ordered as the case was plainly one of murder. The district attorney secured a statement from Wrolson at the jail this morning but refused to reveal the contents until it can be presented in court. The police of the city were asked to aid in the search for Wrolson when it was learned he had made his way here and a drag net was spread. A man answering the general description given was taken into custody at Twentieth and Washington street, but proved to be Victor Anderson, a machinist who had arrived here looking for work. All of the trains were searched and a close check kept upon bus passengers. First Murder in 23 Years The murder of Mrs. Wrolson is the first crime of that nature in Manitowoc county in twenty-three years it was said by authorities today, although there have been cases where deaths have occurred where murder was suspected but never proved. Wrolson will appear in court this afternoon or Monday to be arraigned and it was said by the district attorney that a warrant charging first degree murder would be issued. News of the crime created excitement throughout the county today and hundreds of inquiries as to the details of the case were received by the Herald-News. The Wrolsons have made their home in the county practically all their lives, are well known. Manitowoc Herald Times, Saturday, February 6, 1926 P. 1 ******* WROLSON IS SENTENCED TO 22 YEAR TERM. Wife Slayer Sentenced in Court Today Offers No Statement Oscar Wrolson, wife slayer, convicted of second degree murdery in circuit court, will serve 22 years at Waupun prison. This sentence was imposed by Judge Fowler this afternoon to end the case. Wrolson will not be taken to Waupun until Tuesday, the court having granted a request of his attorneys that he be given time to close up his affairs until that day. Wrolson had nothing to say in court. When asked by Judge Fowler if he desired to say anything, the defendant made no move. Atty. Ledvina said the defense submitted the sentence to the court, asking only that it be remembered that Wrolson was a man 46 years of age. In passing sentence Judge Fowler said that he was satisfied Wrolson had a fair trial and that the verdict was a just one under the evidence. He then commanded Wrolson to stand up and passed sentence which will send him to the penitentiary for what is probably life, there being little expectation that Wrolson will survive past 68. Under the law the penalty for second degree murder is from 11 to 25 years. Wrolson showed no emotion when sentence was pronounced, maintaining the same attitude he exhibited throughout the trial. The Wrolson case, now closed, sets a record in capital crime trials here, having been started and ended in less than five days. ORRIN WROLSON KILLED IN RUNAWAY Orrin, the four-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Olson (sic), who reside on the River road a few miles from the city, was killed in a runaway Monday morning. The boy was driving the team to the home. With him in the wagon was his two-year-old sister. The horses suddenly became frightened and ran away. The children were thrown from the wagon. The little girl escaped injury. It was found that the boy's skull was fractured at the base and his neck broken. The father found the dead body of his child by the roadside shortly after the tragic accident and carried it to the home. The mother is prostrated with grief and seriously ill. The funeral takes place this afternoon, interment being at Jerpen. Manitowoc Pilot Thursday, November 17, 1904 pg. 1 ******** Notes From Branch: The small son of Oscar Wrolson residing a few miles from Branch was accidentally killed by a runaway last Monday. Manitowoc Pilot Thursday, November 17, 1904 pg. 8 ******** A Correction. The account in last week's PILOT of the runaway which resulted in the death of little Orrin Wrolson was not correct in several particulars. We stated that the boy was driving the team. This is a mistake. The father drove the team and the children were in the wagon with him. One of the horses kicked over the pole and the team became unmanageable. Mr. Wrolson, occupied with the horses, could not hold the children. The result was that the boy was thrown out and instantly killed. The accident happened near the home. The body of the child was picked up by the mother. The name, too, was not correctly given in the item referred to. We regret having misstated the facts of the sad and tragic accident, but hasten to make the correction.
