The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m Der Nord Westen, 21 Mar. 1907 ******** (From the correspondent in Mishicott, 26 Mar.) Last Sunday we lost another of our old settlers. Mr. F. Zander, whose recent illness we reported, closed his eyes in the final sleep on Sunday. Following a viewing in the home of the deceased, attended by family and relatives as well as many friends, he was taken to the cemetery near Bolt and laid to rest alongside his predeceased children. Mr. Zander, who lived here for many years, developed a wide circle of friends. In addition to his sorrowing widow, he is survived by 6 children –3 daughters and 3 sons –all self-supporting and in good circumstances. The sons are Arthur and Karl in Manitowoc, and Otto in Brillion. The daughters are Mrs. F. Heyroth in Manitowoc, Mrs. E.D. Angell of Madison, and Mrs. N. Terens from here. Der Nord Westen, 28 Mar. 1907 ******** Ranks of Early Settlers Fast Being Thinned By Destroyer Fred Zander, Mishicott Pioneer Was 72 Years of Age One by one the pioneers and settlers of earlier days in the city are being summoned from earth and in a few years the last of those who came here when the city was young and have aided in the development and improvement of the town, will have been gathered to his Father, leaving behind a memory that will be cherished for the deeds which they accomplished. Within the past two months no less than a half dozen residents, who have made Manitowoc their home for forty or fifty years, have answered the call of death and the ranks are fast being thinned. Two names have been added to the list within forty-eight hours. Frederick Zander a county pioneer whose residence here dates from 1855 is dead at the late home at Michicott where he has lived for many years, the demise occuring early this morning and resulted from a general breakdown of the system, although he had not been confined to his bed at any time. The decedent had attained the ripe old age of 72 and was hale and hearty, retaining full posses- sion of his faculties until the last. The funeral will take place on Sunday and it is expected that interrment will be at Gibson where members of the family who died before him have been buried. Mr. Zander comes from a family particularly noted for its longevity, he being the second to die of a family of eight, five brothers and one sister surviving, all of whom, save one, are older than he. They all came to America from Mecklen- burg, Germany in 1855 and located in this county where they have continued their residence. The decedent located on a farm near Mishicott and afterward conducted a hotel, store in the village. He retired from active business in 1874 and since that time has made his home there. His widow and six children survive. The latter are: Mrs. Ferdinand Heyroth, Arthur and Karl of this city, Otto of Brillion, Mrs. Nic Terens, Mishicott and Mrs. E.D. Angell of Madison. The surviving brothers and sisters are: Louis, Mishicott, Helmuth, Gibson, Edward and Carl this city, John, Milwaukee, William, Eastwin, and Mrs. H. Berner, Antigo. Manitowoc Daily Herald, March 21, 1907 p.1 ******** DEPARTS THIS LIFE Fred Zander of Mishicot, died yesterday morning, March 21, 1907, after a lingering illness culminating in heart failure, age 72 years. As a boy he came to America with his parents, six brothers and two sisters in the early fifties and plunging into the wilderness of northern Manitowoc County, has seen it emerge into a thriving prosperous community, teeming with the hallmarks of civilization and rejoicing in the knowledge that he contributed to its progress by work of hand and brain and heart. He held Education to be the highest aim of youth and its honest application to every day affairs as the means of man's greatest usefulness. His character was carved in noble mold and his heart was as soft and tender as a woman's. He loved America and its ideals. He constantly urged his children to uphold the principles upon which Washington and Jefferson founded the republic. He was never a partisan. He was idolized by his children and "his boys" were ever eager to take guidance from his words of wisdom. Wisdom gained by experience in life's hard school and the school of the pioneer was ever indeed a hard one. He is survived by our mother, three boys, Arthur, Otto and Karl and three daughters, Mrs. F. Heyroth of Manitowoc, Mrs. N.H. Terens of Mishicot and Mrs. E.D. Angell of Madison. Though unknown to a majority of our readers, we know they will respect our impulse to pay this brief tribute to one whom we have, not only loved as a father, but whom we always had reason to admire and respect as a man and a comrade.
