KOSSUTH EVERGREEN OBITUARIES

JACOB, OLIVIA, NORMAN ANDERSON Father Shoots Son, Self; Wounds Wife 2 Daughters Escape Injury at Manitowoc Jacob Anderson, Son Norman, 20, Killed by Rifle An apparent family argument of long standing broke into violence early Saturday morning in a six-room upper apartment at 1026-A S. 10th St. Jacob Anderson, 47, and his son, Norman, 20, died as a result of the shooting. The mother, Olive, 43, was wounded and reported in fair condition at Holy Family Hospital. Authorities called it a case of murder and suicide. Jacob, a tinsmith helper at Lakeside Machine Shop, died shortly before noon Saturday at the hospital of a bullet wound in the left side of the head near the ear. The son was dead on arrival at the hospital and an autopsy performed later at the Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home determined that he had been shot in the chest. Verified by Daughters Time of the shooting was set at between 7 and 7:15 a.m. in the apartment at the time but not harmed were the Anderson’s daughter, (private), and a married daughter, (private). “Both daughters verified that he (the father) did the shooting,” Dr. Theodore Teitgen, county coroner, said. Investigation disclosed that Mrs. Keller got a ride from Milwaukee earlier and arrived at the Anderson apartment for a weekend visit about 5:30 a.m. Saturday. Doctor Teitgen quoted Mrs. Keller as saying that her mother was standing in front of the television set in the living room when she yelled something about being hit in the shoulder. The glass on the television set shattered at the same time but it was not definitely known whether a bullet struck the glass. Mrs. Anderson apparently was shot a second time in the face when she turned around. Other Son Left After her mother was shot, Mrs. Keller ran down the stairs and asked a passing mailman to notify authorities. When she returned to the apartment, Doctor Teitgen said Jacob Anderson was lying in the kitchen doorway with a head wound and his son, Norman, was on the floor next to a bed in a small middle room separating the kitchen and living room. A son, Robert, left the apartment after 6 a.m. to have breakfast at a nearby restaurant and was not present at the shooting. The boy was not immediately located by police. Officers William Tech and Ralph Strauss, first to arrive on (Continued on Page 2-M)Continued from Page 1) the scene, said that a .22 caliber rifle was on the floor behind the father’s body in the kitchen. Doctor Teitgen reported that Anderson and his son had been at odds for some time over Norman’s keeping late hours and his failure to contribute more money from his pay check to family living expenses. The pair had a “violent argument” around supper time Friday evening about money and got into another “squabble” after Norman came home at 2.a.m. Saturday, according to Dr. Teitgen. The family got up when Mrs. Keller arrived from Milwaukee and had talked for some time before the shooting. So far as could be determined, however, Mrs. Anderson was shot without warning while standing in front of the TV set. Apparently there had been no argument immediately before the shooting. Manitowoc Herald Times, Saturday, February 6, 1960 P. 1, 2 ********* SHOOTING SCENE (photo)—What authorities described as a murder-suicide occurred between 7 and 7:15 a.m. Saturday in an upper apartment occupied by the Jacob Anderson family at 1026-A S. 10th St., Manitowoc. Jacob, 47, and his 20-year- old son, Norman, died as a result of the shooting. The wife, Olive, 43, was reported in fair condition at Holy Family Hospital with wounds to the right shoulder and face. Two daughters who were in the apartment at the time verified that Jacob had done the shooting, Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen said. A .22 caliber rifle was found on the kitchen floor behind the father’s body. Police Office William Tech held the rifle as he viewed the spot outlined in chalk where Mrs. Anderson was lying. On the floor were glass fragments from a television set which had shattered. Manitowoc Herald Times, Saturday, February 6, 1960 P. 1 ********** Manitowoc Police moving to Close Probe of Shooting City police Monday were moving to close their investigation into the double murder and suicide case involving the Jacob Anderson family early Saturday morning. Scene of the fatal shooting was a ramshackle six room upper apartment occupied by the family at 1026-A S. 10th St., on the edge of the main south side business district. Police said Jacob Anderson, 47-year-old tinsmith helper, shot his wife and son and then turned the .22 caliber rifle on himself. The wife, Olive, 43, died at 6 a.m. Sunday at Holy Family Hospital of internal bleeding caused by wounds in the chest and face. The son, Norman, died of a chest wound shortly after the shooting which occurred between 7 and 7:15 a.m. An autopsy performed later Saturday showed that the bullet entered the right chest from the side and lodged in the vertebra. Second Shot Fired A self inflicted wound in the head proved fatal to Jacob at the hospital shortly before noon Saturday. Authorities said the shooting apparently was the result of quarrelling over late hours and board money between the father and son. Horrified witnesses to the slayings were (private), a married daughter from West Allis, who arrived at the home about 5:30 a.m. for a weekend visit, and another daughter, (private), who was eight years old Monday. A son, Robert, was out of the house at the time and was found on the street later by police unaware of what had happened. A description of the shooting was provided by Mrs. Keller who told police that her mother was standing in front of the television set in the living room when she cried out “my shoulder hurts.” Jacob then apparently fired a second shot from the kitchen doorway which struck Mrs. Anderson in the face near the mouth. Mrs. Keller said she ran out of the house and asked a passing mailman, Lloyd Auman, on his way to work, to notify authorities. She returned to the house to find Norman dead or dying beside a couch in a small room between the kitchen and living room and her father lying on the kitchen floor with the gun behind him. (private), who was in another bedroom, heard Norman yell “Oh, my head!” and topple to the floor from the couch. “Violent Argument” The father and son did not get along together and were at odds over Norman’s keeping late hours and his failure to contribute more to family living expenses from his pay check, according to Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen. They had a “violent argument” around supper time Friday evening over money and another squabble after Norman came home at 2 a.m. Saturday, Teitgen said, adding that there would be no inquest. Desperate efforts were made to save Mrs. Anderson’s life. She underwent surgery to remove bullets from her body Saturday afternoon and a respirator was rushed from Sheboygan to Manitowoc in her behalf by County Traffic Police Office Leo Naidl. Naidl picked up the respirator at the county line and arrived at the hospital about 5 p.m. Police were not able to question Jacob Anderson or his wife about the shooting. The bullets, cartridge casings and rifle found in the Anderson residence were taken to the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory at Madison Monday for verification that they came from the same gun. The Andersons rented the apartment from Reinhold Luebke, who lived downstairs with his family. The house is located on the west side of 10th Street just south of its intersection with Hancock Street. Other Suicide Not Connected Mrs. Keller, an expectant mother, was staying at a hotel in Manitowoc pending funeral services Tuesday for her parents and brother. The two young children were being cared for by relatives in the city. Another son, Raymond, is working on a farm near Valders. Meanwhile, Police Chief Frank W. Tomcheck said Monday that his department was satisfied that the Anderson slayings had no connection with the suicide death Saturday of Miss Barbara Louise Ryan, 18, who lived about three blocks from the Anderson residence at 926 S. 12 St… However, she was given a ride to the Timber Lodge Tavern on Highway 141 west of Manitowoc by Norman Anderson and another man, police were informed. Anderson and his companion left before closing time without Miss Ryan… (Continued on Page 2-M) (Material pertaining only to Miss Ryan has not been transcribed here.) …There will be joint funeral services for Mrs. Anderson and son and a separate committal rite for Jacob Anderson at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home. The Rev. Theophil Euetzmann will officiate at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the service for Mrs. Anderson and Norman Elroy Anderson. Burial will be in Kossuth Evergreen Cemetery. JOHN FOERSTER Death notice in Der Nord Westen, 10 Feb. 1881: Son of Leonhard Forester(sic) died last Sun. in Kossuth. He was 16 or 17 years old. ******* (NOTE: No burial location, however, he was most likely John Foerster/ surname is spelled wrong in death notice. Parents Leonhard & Apollonia Foerster are buried in Cem #35 Kossuth Evergreen, with son William. Per 1870-1880 census's, their oldest child was "John Foerster", born about 1865. John would have been age 16 at his death in 1881. My guess is that he is also buried in here, despite no transcription record for him. His mother's obit in 1909 states 2 children preceded her in death. They would have been John and Wilhelm. ******** SUICIDE AT KOSSUTH On Monday, a young man of 17, named Leonard Koerster (sic), committed suicide by hanging at Kossuth. The manner of accomplishing the deed evinces a determination in the annals of such crime, and the causes which led to the suicide are shrouded in mystery. The most ??? gesture is the determined will which sustained the purpose, as he as an opportunity to recede from his object at the time before becoming unconscious. His mother sent him to the barn to do something a few minutes before noon. When dinner was on the table he did not return and the meal was eaten without his absence causing any alarm. After dinner search was made for him and he was found hanged to a rafter from the barn. The mow was so filled with hay that there was not sufficient space between the hay and the rafter from which the boy was suspended, to allow him to stand upright. When found, his feet touched the hay, and his body extended upward diagonally, and his hands which hung down limp, almost reached the hay. There was hardly space sufficient for him to accomplish his purpose. A strap was around his neck to which a rope was attached, but the noose was so large, that by placing his body in an upright position the noose would pass over his head. The boy was a healthy young fellow and does not seem to have been subject to moody fits. His father says he was not a particularly bright boy, in fact was below the average in intelligence, but was by no means weak minded. On the inquest held, no evidence was given which could throw any light upon the deed. The jury found that the boy came to his death by his own hand and he probably did. But it is difficult to understand how a boy having none of that refined sensitiveness which domestic or other difficulties would oppress, could so persistently labor for self-destruction.
