OTTO KRAJNIK Otto J. Krainik, age 98, formerly of 9003 Polifka Rd., Whitelaw, died Monday, February 22, 1993, at Shady Lane Home Manitowoc, where he was a resident for two years. White will officiate with burial to be at the Kossuth National Cemetery in the Town of Kossuth, with Military Graveside Rites accorded by the American Legion Drews-Blesser Post No. 88. Otto’s parents had immigrated from Czechoslovakia and settled in Manitowoc County. He was born May 26, 1894 on the home farm in the Town of Kossuth, son of the late Wencil and Anna Cherney Krainik. He was the 2nd oldest of 12 children of which four are still living. What changes he witnessed in a lifetime, from the “horse and buggy and kerosene lamp era” to space age technology. Many are the stories he used to tell of his younger days, the hardships of the long winters where in the mornings the family would wake to find snow on top of their feather ticks they slept under, or that water in the reservoir of the kitchen stove had a thin coating of ice on it. He spoke of the long hot days of summer working with thrashing crews, of walking to school in all kinds of weather often carrying meager lunches (bread with lard on it) because the times were hard. He also spoke of the unpolluted rivers, lakes and streams and the tranquility of the countryside. In winter he said the only tracks over the snow covered fields were made by deer, rabbits, quail and other wild game not by the “throttle happy snowmobilers”. He was a great sportsman enjoying hunting and fishing. He often spoke of the pranks they pulled as kids, and the fun they had at dances, of the horse and buggy getting home before they did. (Explain that one!) Otto was a private in the U.S. Army 6th Company 161st Depot Brigade serving during World War I from 1918-1919. At the age of 25 on May 8, 1920, he was married to the former Clara Cizek. They were married for 61 years and observed their 60th wedding anniversary in 1980. Three children were born of the union of which two survived childhood. The couple enjoyed music and Otto played the violin while Clara played the piano or the organ. Together the couple were members of the Maribel-Kellnersville Senior Citizens. He was a member for over 60 years of the American Legion Drews Bleser Post No. 88 of Manitowoc. Clara had preceded him in death on December 31, 1981. Otto was a carpenter by trade and also was a farmer. Long were the hours he put in those days to make ends meet. Otto’s survivors include his two daughters and one son-in-law, Evelyn Wordell, rural Two Rivers, and Myvanwy and Richard Franz, Mishicot; thirteen grandchildren; twenty seven great grandchildren; one step great grandchild and one great great grandson; his brother and his wife, Ernest and Edith Krajnik, Francis Creek; one sister-in-law, Viola Krainik, Francis Creek; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Alvina Pagel, Manitowoc, Ellen and Dr. Ralph Petersen, Manitowoc, and Ann Siebert, Calif. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends survive. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Rudolph, a son-in-law, Robert Wordell, four brothers, and three sisters. Friends and family may call at the Saur Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. and on Thursday until the time of services. The family suggest that memorials be made to the charity of your choice. MARIE KUNZ From the Two Rivers Chronicle, Tuesday, December 12, 1905 (front page) DEMENTED SON MURDERS AGED MOTHER Last Thursday evening Wenzel Kunz a young man 27 years of age and subject to temporary fits of insanity killed his aged mother by crushing her skull with a flat iron, giving as his reason for so doing, when arrested, that he did not feel able to support her owing, to his poor health. The murdered woman was fairly well-to-do, and moved to Manitowoc from her farm in Kossuth about three years ago. The murder was a brutal one, but owing to the mental state of the murderer there will probably be no prosecution. He will, no doubt, be sent to an insane asylum and be so guarded that he cannot injure any one. (second page) SON MURDERS HIS MOTHER J.W. Kunz of Manitowoc Says He Brained Her With Flatiron BELIEVED TO BE INSANE Daughter-in-Law Discovers Body Bound to Bed - Accused Dressed in Five Suits of Clothing. Manitowoc, Wis. Dec. 8-[Special.]- Murdered by her son, J. Wenzel Kunz, with a flatiron, Mrs. Mary Kunz, aged 70, was found dead in her home last night, blood bespattered and fearfully mutilated. The murderer confessed several hours later. He is thought to be insane. Mrs. Ignatz Kunz, a daughter-in-law of the murdered woman, discovered the body lying across a bed in the same position she had left her two hours previous, and the son was in the house exhibiting no signs of fear. The dead woman was bound and gagged, bed-clothing being used. Murder Confesses Kunz, the son, was immediately placed under arrest, and when taken to jail he broke down, became hysterical and confessed to the terrible crime. He told the officers of the flatiron which he had replaced on the stove. The man is 28 years old and came here with his mother from Kossuth, where she had lived since 1850. He has been considered insane for several years. A brother is now in an asylum in this county. Woman Was Wealthy Mrs. Kunz was a wealthy woman, and her son has been unemployed since removing to this city. He has engaged in enterprises many times, representing himself as agent of big commercial houses and often being morose, never violent, however. A year ago relatives petitioned for an examination into the man's sanity, but the case was not pushed and the matter was dropped. Had on Five Suits Kunz refuses to discuss the murder. When taken he had on five suits of clothing, a heavy overcoat and a hat. He made no effort to escape. During the night and this morning an attendant was placed with him to quiet him. Kunz advertised for a wife in Milwaukee and Chicago papers continually, and at one time opened a store here for the sale of a patent radiator. Upon investigation it was found that he had nothing in the building. It is said that he used his mother's money for his operations. ********

YOUNG MAN MURDERS HIS MOTHER
Wenzel Kunz, aged twenty seven years, murdered his mother, Mrs. Mary Kunz, last Thursday afternoon between three and four o'clock at the family home on South Tenth street. The deed was committed with a flatiron. The victim was found lying on her bed, in a pool of her own blood. The murderer had bound and gagged her before perpetrating the atrocious, cold-blooded crime, than which no more heinous deed has ever been committed in this city. The skull in the back of the head was fractured.
The murder was discovered by the victim's daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ignatz Kunz, who immediately summoned officers. When the officers arrived, the murderer was found sitting on the porch. He was placed under arrest, and on the way to jail he confessed to the crime. He said he wanted to put his mother out of misery, she being an invalid.
For several weeks he had been advertising for a wife.
The Kunz family formerly lived in the town of Kossuth. The perpetrator of the crime had no occupation. He is believed to be something of a simpleton.
The coroner's jury held Kunz for the murder on the confession he made to the police chief. Mrs. Kunz had made a will a few days before her death, and it is thought that this fact may have had some influence in causing the commission of the crime. It is said that the son was given but a small part of the property, for the reason that he had already received a considerable portion of his share, as the mother had supported him for years. He waived examination in the municipal court last Friday, and was bound over to the circuit court for trial. It is probable that the plea of insanity will be the defense.

WILLED SON BUT LITTLE.
Reason for Murder of Mrs. Kunz Thought to Be Division of Estate.
MANITOWOC, Wis., Dec. 9.(Specail.)-Because he feared that he might lose some of his rights on a plea of insanity which will be the defense, J. Wenzel Kunz, who is charged with the murder of his mother, refused to waive examination in municipal court yesterday afternoon, but a countinuance was granted in order that a brother may reach here to assist the prisoner.
The coroner's jury held Kunz for the murder on the confession which he made to the police chief. That Mrs. Kunz made a will a few days ago and that this may have had some influence to cause the murder, is a theory that officers are working on. The women was wealthy and it is reported that the son was given but a small part of the estate because the mother had supported him for years.

JOSEPH MIRINOVSKY FARMER BLOWS HEAD OFF WITH GUN J. MIRIJOVSKY(sic) ENDS LIFE AFTER DRAWING WILL Was Successful Farmer But Believed To Have Worried Over Farm Transfer Slipping from his home during the early hours of the morning Joseph Mirijovsky, a town of Franklin farmer, made his way to the barn with a shot gun, laid down a blanket which had been carefully placed and then tore off the top of his head with a single charge of the gun. His body was found several hours later by Mrs. Slager who was living at the Mirijovsky home and who went out to seek the man when he failed to appear for breakfast. Coroner W.G. Kemper was called and pronounced the man a suicide, holding that no inquest would be necessary. Was Successful Farmer. Mirijovsky, who was about fifty-seven years old came to this country from Bohemia as a young man and without a dollar and was regarded as a most successful farmer and a rather keen businessman. He had recently disposed of his farm to Joseph Shavlik at what was considered a very good price and had purchased the Wenzel Krajnik place just across the road but in the town of Kossuth where his own farm had been in the town of Franklin. He is said to have regretted making the deal and had attempted to buy the old home back from the new owners. He was making arrangements to move when the attempt failed but that failure appeared to have worried him. He had also been in ill health for several months. Asks to Have Will Drawn. Only a short time ago Mirijovsky came to the office of Attorney Lawrence Ledvina and asked to have his will drawn and two days ago he returned to sign the completed copy. He was extremely particular in drawing the document but gave no indication that he expected to die within a short time. Mirijovsky was twice married, his first wife having died many years ago and he is survived by his widow and three children. One of these, a son, Joseph, taught school at Kellnersville before the world war, enlisted and served overseas and after his return went west and has not been heard from since. Mary and Helen, daughters, are at home. Funeral arrangements had not been completed at noon today but will probably be held Tuesday at Kellnersville. CHARLES RUZEK Charles Ruzek Killed; Tar Wagon Pulled by Truck Bursts Into Flames Charles Ruzek, 50, Melnik, was fatally injured this morning when he fell or jumped from a county highway truck on which he was riding as a tar wagon pulled behind the truck burst into flames. Ruzek suffered a cerebral concussion and a crushed chest. He died at about 5 o'clock, an hour after the accident, at the Holy Family hospital. Headed For Four Corners With the rest of a six man crew, riding in two trucks, Ruzek left the highway sheds on Waldo Boulevard at about four o'clock this morning. They were headed for Four Corners to tar cracks in the pavement. As they rounded the bend of Highway 10, on the west end of Waldo Boulevard, Ruzek noticed the tar wagon burst into flames. There were two fire extinguishers on the truck and it is not known whether Ruzek fell while reaching for one of them or was caught beneath the truck while jumping to the ground. The truck, traveling at a slow rate of speed, was stopped well within ten feet of the spot where the flames broke out. Ruzek's body was lying between the front and rear wheels of the truck toward the center of the highway. The truck wheels could not have passed over his body. It is believed the rear wheel struck him and dragged him for several feet, crushing his chest. Ruzek was conscious when taken from under the truck. "I'm done for," he gasped, according to men who were with him. He was rushed to the hospital in the city ambulance. He died an hour later. William Klackner was driving the truck on which Ruzek was riding (continued on page 2)/(continued from page 1) Others in the crew were Louis Marshek, Arthur Klackner, William Holmes and Edward Wegner. Tar Wagon Destroyed We asked him to ride in the cab just before we started, but he said "no, it's such a nice day I'll ride outside," one of the crew members said this morning. Sheriff Norman Berkedal and Coroner Gerald Rau were summoned in the scene shortly after the accident occurred. The tar wagon was destroyed by fire. Tar poured rom the wagon and flowed along the gutter on the curve and into the ditch at the side of the roadway. According to Highway Commissioner Edward Berkedal, Ruzek had been employed by the county for the past three years. His is the second death on the county crew this month. James Wadzinski, Rockwood, was killed a week ago last Monday in the county highway sheds when he was hit by a tire rim which sprung from a tire he was inflating. Funeral services for Mr. Ruzek will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from the home in Melnick. The American Legion will have charge of the services. He will be buried with military honors in the uniform he wore while serving as a private in the 40th Field Artillery during the World War. Born At Kossuth Mr. Ruzek was born Dec. 5, 1886 in the town of Kossuth. He attended school there and in 1919 was married to Libbie Jirikovec, after he had been mustered out of the army.
