CARL AHLSWEDE Death Thurs. last week of 48-yr. old Charles Ahlswede, a resident of Town Kossuth, of Bright's disease. He is survived by his widow and 4 children. The funeral was held Sun. afternoon. An instrument in writing, purporting to be the last will and testament of Carl Ahlswede of Kossuth, in said county, having been delivered into said court: And Mary Ahlswede of Kossuth, in said county, having presented to said court her petition in writing duly verified, representing, among other things, that said Carl Ahlswede died testate, at Kossuth, in said county, on the 20th day of November 1902; that said instrument, is the last will of said deceased and that said petitioner is named therein as Executrix and praying that said instrument be proven and admitted to Probate and that letters testamentary be thereon issued to said petitioner. It is ordered: That said petition and the matters therein be heard, and proofs of said last will and testament be taken, at a special term of said county court, to be held at the Probate Office in the city of Manitowoc, on Tuesday, the 27th day of February, 1906, at 10 o'clock a.m. It is further ordered, that notice of the time and place of said hearing be given by publication hereof for three successive weeks once each week, previous to the time of said hearing in the Manitowoc Post a newspaper published in said Manitowoc County. EDWARD AHLSWEDE ORDER INQUEST INTO DEATH OF ROCKWOOD MAN Ed. Ahlswede, Sr., Killed Near Home at Rockwood Mr. Ahlswede, a prominent county resident, whose entire lifetime was spent on the same homestead at Rockwood, was killed when struck down by an automobile being driven north on Highway 141 by Harry De Noble, DePere, Route 1, resident who makes his home at the Addison House here, at 8:25 o'clock Saturday morning. The accident occurred as Mr. Ahlswede was crossing the highway almost in front of his home while on the way to the meat market. When persons  witnessing the accident went to his rescue they found he had been killed instantly. (paragraphs describing accident not transcribed) Life Long Resident Mr. Ahlswede was a life-long resident of the town of Kossuth and made his home on the same homestead where he was born on January 9, 1860. When a young man he married Mathilda Kiehn, who with four children, Louis of Chicago, Hugo at Milwaukee, Edward Jr., and Richard of Rockwood; a brother Henry at Glennellyn, a Chicago suburb and two grandchildren survive him. Of late years he has  been living a retired life. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the home and at 2 o'clock from the Baptist church at Kossuth with the Rev. JOHANNA AHLSWEDE The funeral of Mrs. Sophia Ahlswede was held from the Baptist church at Kossuth yesterday and was largely attended. Mrs. Ahlswede died at the home of her son, Charles, in the town of Kossuth, Sunday at the age of 80 years. She had been a resident of the county for 49 years and was well known in this city. That would put her birth in 1819, and in the cemetery list of burials, it shows Johanna Ahlswede as born in 1819/died in 1899. Due to the age of the tombstone, it may have been mis-read in the transcriptions)


MATHILDA AHLSWEDE Mrs. Edward Ahlswede, Sr., 75, died at her home at Rockwood, Town of Kossuth, Sunday morning at 9 o'clock following a heart attack. She had been in good health and death was unexpected. She was a life-long resident of Kossuth, born Dec. 25, 1863. Her maiden name was Mathilda Kiehn. She was married to Mr. Ahlswede Dec. 28, 1884. He died May 31, 1931. Survivors are three sons, Louis E. of Chicago, Edward and Richard of Kossuth, two sisters, Mrs. Julius Behrman, Kewaunee county, and Mrs. August Affeld, 1316 S. 13th street, Manitowoc, and three grandchildren. One son, Hugo V., died in Milwaukee in 1931. The body will lie in state at the Pfeffer Funeral home until 10 a.m. Tuesday when it will be removed to the Kossuth Baptist church. The Rev. Lewis Behrendt of Sheboygan will conduct the funeral services at the church at 2 p.m. and burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. Manitowoc Herald Times, Monday, February 13, 1939 P.2


ARTHUR S. ANDERSON Private funeral services for Arthur Sheldon Anderson, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Max Anderson, of 603 S. 25th St., Manitowoc, who died  Saturday at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, were Monday morning at Baptist Kossuth Cemetery, Rockwood, with the Rev. Harvey Rakow officiating. He was born Friday at Holy Family Hospital, son of Max and Bonnie Gilbert Anderson. Among survivors are the parents; a brother, Eric Max, and a sister, Andrea Jean, at home; the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Gilbert, of Blain Township, Mich., and the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Anderson, of Elberta, Mich.  Funeral arrangements were by Jens Funeral Home, Manitowoc.  Manitowoc Herald Times, February 4, 1963  P. 5


ALMA ANTHOLD Mrs. Alma Anthold, 91, of Shady Lane Home and formerly of Rockwood, died Monday, November 5, 1990, at Holy Family Medical Center. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church. Rev. Bruce Huffer will officiate with burial at First Baptist Church Cemetery. She was born June 27, 1899, in the Town of Kossuth, daughter of the late August and Sophie Ruty Kiehn. She attended schools in the Town of Kossuth and she was a Stenographer for Schlei Dray Line Company for many years. She married Erwin Anthold, December 5, 1931, in the Town of Kossuth. She was a member of Rockwood Homemakers Club, First Baptist Church and the Francis Creek and Rockwood Senior Citizens. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law; a daughter and son-in-law; four grandsons and a granddaughter; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Erwin, two brothers, Edwin and Hugo Kiehn, a grandson, Steven James Rogers. Friends may call at Jens Funeral Home, Manitowoc, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and then at the church from noon on Saturday until the time of services. ERWIN ANTHOLD Mr. Erwin Anthold, 89, of 6003 County Trunk R., died Friday evening, March 13, 1987, at his residence. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Bruce Huffer will officiate and burial will be in First Baptist Church Cemetery, Town of Kossuth. Mr. Anthold was born February 2, 1898, in the Town of Kossuth, son of the late Charles and Minnie Schwendener Anthold. He attended School district No. 4 Town of Kossuth. He married Alma Kiehn, December 5, 1931, in the Town of Kossuth. They resided in that area ever since. Mr. Anthold was employed at Rockwell Lime Company and Burger boat Company, retiring in 1966. He was Chief of Rockwood Fire Department for 25 years and was Director of School board for District Number 4, Town of Kossuth for 10 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church and past Trustee and Deacon. Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Marilyn Anthold of Los Angeles, California; a daughter and son-in-law, Roberta and Eugene Shannon of Appleton; a sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Frank Streitenberger of Milwaukee; four grandchildren, other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. CHARLES ANTHOLT Charles Antholt, 84, of route 5, Manitowoc, retired Kossuth farmer, died this morning at the home of his son, Erwin, in Rockwood. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Pfeffer funeral home, the Rev. J.C. Schweitzer officiating. Burial will be in the Baptist cemetery in Kossuth. He was born in the county in 1862 and in 1884 married Miss Minnie Schwendener. They located on the Kossuth farm. Mr. Antholt retired 24 years ago and his wife died in 1938. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. William Meusel and Mrs. Frank Strentenberger both of Milwaukee; three sons, Arthur of Cedarburg and George and Erwin of Rockwood; 14 grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. MINNIE ANTHOLT Mrs. Charles Anthold, 76, Rockwood, died this morning. She had been ill only since Sunday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. from the Kossuth Baptist Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Anthold, nee Minnie Schwendener, was born in Polk, Washington County, Wis., in 1862 and was married to Charles Anthold in 1884. They located on a farm in Kossuth. Disposing of the farm to his son, Mr. Anthold moved with his wife to Rockwood, where they resided for 16 years. Survivors are the widower, three sons, George, Kossuth; Erwin, Rockwood; Arthur, Pound, Wis.; four daughters, Mrs. Arthur Kehrein; Mrs. Linda Lockhert and Mrs. William Musel, Milwaukee; Mrs. Louis Alswede, Chicago; sister, Mrs. Kate Grant, Berkeley, Calif.; brother, Henry, Pell Lake, Wis., and 12 grandchildren. MINNA BASKEN Last year a man named Basken, who lived near King's Bridge, died, leaving a wife and eleven children, all of whom were under age. His widow managed to keep the family together and support them. Last week she died leaving a large family without a protector. CAROLINA BOCK MRS. CAROLINA BOCK, RESIDENT OF COUNTY FOR 62 YEARS, IS CALLED BY DEATH, 67(sic) YRS. OLD Death claimed one of the oldest residents of Manitowoc county last night when Mrs. Caolina Bock, widow, passed away at her home near Silver Creek at the advanced age of 87 years. Mrs. Bock had been a resident of Manitowoc county for more than sixty-two years continuously, having come here in youth. Born in Germany 87 years ago, Mrs. Bock came to Manitowoc with her husband resided on a farm in the town of Kossuth for a long term of years. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Bock made her home on N. Twelfth street in this city until some months ago when she took up her home on a farm near Silver Creek which she purchased. Deceased was the mother of nine children, four of whom survive, being William of the town of Manitowoc, Otto of Crandon, Henry of Rhinelander and Charles of Suckow, Mont. The funeral will be held Tuesday from the home at Silver Creek and interrment (sic) will be at the Baptist cemetery at Kossuth, the funeral leaving the home at noon. JOHANN BONKS John Bonks of Kossuth died on Friday of last week and was buried on Sunday. He was 60 years of age and had lived for 23 years in Kossuth. Mrs. Charles Beers of this city is his daughter. JULIUS BURKE Death in Town Two Rivers on Sunday, following a 7-year illness, of Julius Burke. The deceased was born 01 November 1828 in West Prussia and came to America in 1867. He first settled in Milwaukee, but shortly removed to Two Rivers and filled the position as mechanic in the tannery of the Wisconsin Leather Co… He leaves a widow, 6 sons and 5 daughters. The funeral took place yesterday from the German Baptist Church in Kossuth. Der Nord Westen, 22 Mar. 1906 ******** OLD SETTLER PASSED AWAY Mr. Julius Burke, an honored and respected resident of the Tannery, passed away Sunday, March 18. He was ill about seven years but his condition became serious during the last few days. The cause of his demise was a hardening of the arteries and exhaustion. He was born at West Prussia, Germany, November 1, 1828. He emigrated in the year 1857 and made Milwaukee his home for two years. Then he came to Two Rivers with his family and has resided at the homestead ever since. For many years he was an engineer for the Wisconsin Leather Company and since the removal of the same he has lived a retired life. He leaves a widow and six sons and five daughters to mourn his loss. The Misses Clara and Hattie were at their father's bedside when the end came, also Mrs. Bleyler of Milwaukee and Charles Burke of Wausau. Being so far away from home it was impossible for the rest of the children to attend the funeral. Mr. Burke lived a pure, Christian life. He was a kind and affectionate husband and father and will be sadly missed by his family. A large circle of friends sympathize with the bereaved family. Interment took place Wednesday, Rev. F. W. LINNA BURKE Death notice in Der Nord Westen, 24 Apr. 1884: Mrs. Linna Burke (nee Meyer) died from consumption on 20 Apr. in Wausau. She was 27 yrs. 1 mo. 10 days old. Last year she married Julius Burke of Two Rivers and they moved to Wausau. Her body was brought by rail to Manitowoc and then taken to Kossuth for burial last Tues. in the Baptist Cemetery. A brother and sister preceded her in death not more than six months ago.

EMMA KASCH From Der Nord Westen, 08 Oct. 1908: When John Kasch, a Town Kossuth farmer, returned to his residence from his fields, he found his wife sitting dead in an armchair. She still had her 2 small children in her lap, both playing without any awareness that their mother had just passed. Doctors were called but there was nothing to be done. The lady had done wash that day and the doctor guessed that she had burst a blood vessel and had died from internal bleeding. The deceased leaves her husband and 5 small children. JOHN KASCH John Kasch, 79, town of Kossuth farmer, died at his home early today following a short illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Urbanek and Schlei funeral home, the Rev. E. O. Flagstead officiating. Burial will be in the Kossuth Baptist cemetery. Mr. Kasch was born in 1870 on the homestead farm where he lived all his life. In 1896 he married Emma Kruko. She died 40 years ago. Survivors are three daughters, Miss Selma and Miss Alvina at home, Mrs. Shelby Rinehart of Freeport, Ill., son, August, of Manitowoc; sister, Mrs. John Rorhbach of Manitowoc. AUGUST KIEHN HEART ATTACK PROVES FATAL August Kiehn Dies At Farm Home In Kossuth August Kiehn, 67, died suddenly of a heart attack this morning as he prepared to leave the farm home in the town of Kosuth to work in the fields. Mr. Kiehn, who spent his entire life on the homestead, route 2, Manitowoc, where he was born, had not been in the best of health the past week, but was able to continue work. His son, Edwin, had left a few minutes before to go to a nearby farm. Funeral Friday Mrs. Kiehn, when her husband was stricken, summoned a physician. He died, however, before the arrival of the doctor. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from the Kossuth Baptist church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Kiehn was born in Kossuth in 1868 and married Sophia Rutz in 1898. They continued to reside on the homestead farm. Widow Survives Survivors are the widow; a daughter, Mrs. Erwin Arnthold, route 2, Manitowoc; a son, Edwin, Kossuth; three sisters, Mrs. Mathilda Ahlswede, route 2, Manitowoc, Mrs. Julius Behrmann, Kewaunee, Mrs. Emma Affeldt, city; and one grandchild. EDWIN G. KIEHN Edwin G. Kiehn, 75, of Route 1, Valders, died unexpectedly, Thursday afternoon, Oct. 8, at Calumet Memorial Hospital, Chilton.Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Reedsville Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Bruce Huffer will officiate and burial will be in Town of Kossuth Cemetery. Mr. Kiehn was born Nov. 26, 1905, in the Town of Kossuth, Manitowoc County, son of the late August and Sophie Rutz Kiehn. Mr. Kiehn farmed in the Town of Kossuth and Eaton, he also was employed at H.G. Weber Company of Kiel, retiring in 1967. Mr. Kiehn was presently secretary and treasurer of the Town of Eaton Farm Bureau. He was a member of I.A.M. and A.W. local 1259 of New Holstein, senior citizens of Reedsville, St. Nazianz and Kiel and a member of First Baptist Church of Manitowoc. He married Mabel Priem Nov. 30, 1939, at Columbus, Wis. Survivors include his wife, two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Betty Kiehn of Reedsville and William and Barbara Kiehn of Prairie View, Ill.; a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Wenzel Knier of Manitowoc; a sister and brother-in-law, Alma and Erwin Antbold of Rockwood; seven grandchildren, other relatives and friends also survive. SOPHIE KIEHN Mrs. August Kiehn, 79, lifelong Manitowoc County resident, died Sunday after a lingering illness at the home of a son in law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Anthold, of ???????, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc. The Rev. Harvey Rakow will officiate and burial will be in the Baptist Cemetery in the town of Kossuth. The former Sophie Rutz was born March 28, 1874, in the town of Two Rivers. Following her marriage Feb. 16, 1898, the Mr. Kiehn the couple settled on a farm in Kossuth. The husband died in 1936 and for the past 2 1/2 years Mrs. Kiehn had made her home with the Antholds near Rockwood. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Anthold, of Rt. 5, Manitowoc; a son, Edwin of Rt. 1, Valders; a brother, Alex of Manitowoc and five grand- children. JOHANN KRUEGER John Kroeger (sic), one of the first settlers of the Town of Two Rivers, died on Saturday, June 26th at the home of his son-in-law, in that town at the age of 75 years and 7 months. He was buried on Tuesday last. The Chronicle, Tues., July 6, 1897


MARIA KRUEGER Mrs. John Krueger, widow of one of the early settlers of the town of Two Rivers, died last Friday of old age at the home of her daughter, Mrs. F. WILLIAM "WILLIE" LINDAUER William "Willie" Lindauer, age 92 (photo), formerly of 1485 N. 7th St., Manitowoc, went into eternal peace on Monday, July 26, 2010, at Northridge Medical Center. He was born March 17, 1918, in Manitowoc, son of the late Joseph and Lillian (Cisler) Lindauer. Willie attended Manitowoc schools. He worked at numerous jobs including the Manitowoc Court House, Wally's Key & Workshop, St. Vincent de Paul's, and even helped pour the concrete for the Budweiser silos in downtown Manitowoc. Willie was a simple man with a kind heart. In his younger years he was an excellent fisherman and admitted to skipping school for the joy of a relaxing day. He was gifted when it came to fixing anything with a small motor especially lawnmowers. Willie loved bicycling and rode his bike well into his 70s. He loved to spend time with his Great nieces and nephews at the family cookouts and would always stay by the side of his beloved sister, Tilly. Tilly will truly miss her older brother. He was preceded in death by his parents: Joseph and Lillian Lindauer; brother: Joseph Lindauer; sister: Lucille Kimball; half brothers: Larry, Harry, and Erwin Stryzywski; and brother-in-law: Harold Seiler. MARGARETHA LINLOGE From Der Nord Westen, 16 Jan. 1896: Death Sun. in Town Kossuth, of Mrs. Margarethe Lindloge, mother of Mr. Conrad Jaeckel. The deceased, who about 74-1/2 yrs. of age, came to Manitowoc Co. in 1844, thus making her one of the oldest pioneers in our county. She married in the same year to John Jaeckel, who has been dead about 30 yrs. They had 12 children of whom 6 survive. After Mr. Jaeckel died, and following a 2-yr. widowhood, she married Mr. Lindloge in 1858, but the latter was killed during the war and she was widowed once again. Her death is attributed to old age debility. The funeral took place Tues. at the cemetery of the Baptist Congregation in Kossuth.


ANNA LUECKER Death in Centerville on Christmas morning of Mrs. George Luecker who had been bedridden for a week following a bad fall. The deceased, whose the mother of Wilhelm Hess locally, was born in Bavaria in 1829, came to America in 1851 and married Mr. Hess in New York. Following Mr. Hess's death she married Mr. Geo. Luecker and they came to Manitowoc with their children. The deceased leaves two sons and a daughter. Der Nord Westen, 28 Dec. 1899 ******** DEATH OF MRS. LUECKER. Mrs. George Luecker of Centerville died on Monday of this week. She was the mother of Wm. J. Hess, of this city, proprietor of the Boiler Works. She was married to Wm. Hess in New York in 1855 and the same year moved to Neshoto. Her husband enlisted during the civil war and was killed at Gettysburg. The family was without means and the children were young. The mother was energetic and provided for them until they were able to help themselves. She married George Luecker 24 years ago. Her death was caused by an injury to her spine from a fall. She was born in Germany February 22, 1830 and came to this country when young. The old lady was born in Germany in 1829 and migrating with her folks to America settled down at Shoto, Manitowoc County, but afterwards removed to Centerville where she has since lived. MARIA MAGEE FORMER LOCAL RESIDENT DIES AT CLEVELAND, O. Messages received by relatives today announced the death of Mrs. Mary Magee, nee Rohrbach, at Cleveland, Ohio, where she had made her home for two years. The body will be brought here tomorrow and taken to th (sic) home of a sister at Kossuth where funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2, interment being at the Kossuth Baptist cemetery. Mrs. Magee was a daughter of Mrs. Martin Rohrbach, of Kossuth, who with three sisters and four brothers survive her. They are Mrs. Robert Miller, Kossuth; Mrs. Jacob Ebert, of Brillion and Mrs. H. Eckhart of Rock Island, Ill., and August, William, Ernst of Kossuth and Fred of Brillion. One son William, also survives at Cleveland, O. HEINRICH MEYER (d. 1914) Henry Meyer, a well known resident of the county, residing at Neshoto, on Route 7, died yesterday, aged 63 years, and the funeral will be held from the late home Sunday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock. MARY AHLSWEDE MILLER Mrs. Mary Ahlswede Miller, 80, widow of the Rev. John Miller, former pastor of the Kossuth Baptist church, died at 7 o'clock last night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Gustave Kohlmeier, Greenleaf, Route 2, in the Town of Cooperstown. Mrs. Miller had lived with her daughter for the last two years. She had been in ill health for some time. The body will lie in state at the Pfeffer funeral home from Friday morning until Saturday morning when it will be removed to the Kossuth Baptist church where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. Mrs. Miller, whose maiden name was Mary Rolzenthal, was born March 29, 1859 in the Town of Kossuth. She was married to Carl Ahlswede Feb. 17, 1878. Two daughters and two sons were born to the couple. She was married the second time Sept. 14, 1912 to the Rev. Miller. He died six years ago. The survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Kohlmeier, two sons, Charles Ahlswede, city, and Benjamin Ahlswede, Kossuth, one brother, Willaim Rolzenthal, of Kossuth, 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. AUGUSTA ROHRBACH DEATH CAME IN A MINUTE Mrs. Rohrbach in City this Morning, Dead this Afternoon A visitor in the city during the morning when she came to do shopping, Mrs. Christian Rohrbach is dead this afternoon at her home on the Shoto Road. Mrs. Rohrbach's demise was sudden and resulted from hemorrhage of the lungs. Death resulted in a few seconds after the attack and before medical aid could be summoned. Mrs. Rohrbach was 66 years of age and is survived by a husband and family. She as in apparent good health and her death will be a great shock to friends. BERTHA ROHRBACH AGED PIONEER OF COUNTY IS TAKEN BY DEATH Mrs. Bertha Rohrbach, resident of the county for more than seventy- five years, passed away early this morning on the old homestead on the Town Line road on which she had lived for more than sixty years. A sudden stroke wore heavily on her years and she passed soon after being stricken. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon, at the Baptist church on the Town Line road, the Rev. Palfemer officiating. Mrs. Rohrbach, nee Glare, was born in Germany June 1, 1846, and came to this country with her parents at the age of six years. At the age of nine, living in the country near Kossuth, she was sent to work to help support the family which was experiencing the early day hardships so common with those who pioneered the county. Nine years later, at the age of eighteen, she was married to Martin Rohrbach, who passed away thirteen years ago. Four sons, Fred, Ernest, August and William, and three daughters, Mrs. Henry Eggert, Mrs. Robert Mueller and Mrs. Jacob Emmett, and thirty- two grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren survive. CHRISTIAN ROHRBACH Resident of County for 70 Years Dies Wm Rohrback, One of Oldest Pioneers Passes Away Christian Rohrbach, resident of Manitowoc County for seventy years, having come here in 1855, died at the home of William Bertoleat, Route 6, Kossuth last night, aged 88, death being due to the infirmities of age. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1:30 from the Bertoleat home to the Kossuth Baptist church. Mr. Rohrbach was born in Germany, January 7, 1837 and came to this country in 1855, locating in Manitowoc County where he has resided since. He was married April 6, 1862 to Augusta Glove who preceded him in death fourteen years ago. Eight children survive Mr. Rohrbach as follows: Mrs. Fred Nelphals, Mrs. William Bertoloat, Mrs. Charles Specht, Mrs. Herman Specht, Mrs. Benjamin Ahlswede, Albert Rohrbach, all of this city and Charles and Benjamin Rohrbach of Milwaukee. One son, John died a year ago. There are also twenty-two grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. ELIZABETH ROHRBACH Mrs. John Rohrbach, 83 (photo) of 1440 North Eighth St., Manitowoc, lifelong resident of city and county, died Wednesday morning at the Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, following a month’s illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Mittnacht Funeral Home, Manitowoc. The Rev. Harvey Rakow will officiate and burial will be in the Kossuth Baptist Cemetery. She was born Elizabeth Casch in Kossuth in 1869 and in 1896 was married to John Rohrbach. They located on a farm in the town of Manitowoc and in 1921 moved to Manitowoc. Her husband died in 1924. ANDREAS RUTZ From Der Nord Westen, 30 Oct. 1909: (Saturday dateline) Death Thursday last week, from old age debility, of Andreas Rutz, an old and well-known resident of our county on his farm in Town Two Rivers. The deceased was born in Switzerland, came to America in 1848, and was married in 1856. He settled on the above mentioned farm where he lived the rest of his life. CARL SCHMIDTMANN C. SCHMIDTMAN, AGED 75, DIES SUDDENLY Infirmities incident to seventy-five years of age, caused the death of Carl Schmidtman, Town of Kossuth farmer, early this morning at the Kossuth homestead in which he had been born and raised. Mr. Schmidtman had been engaged in farming all his life and has been regarded as a prosperous farmer, having built up a fine farm and home at Kossuth. His death claims one of the county's oldest pioneers and will be keenly felt by a large circle of old friends. Though he had been ailing slightly for more than a month, death came suddenly and unexpectedly and is a shock to all who knew him. At an early age Mr. Schmidtman was married to Miss Marie Ewald who survives him, and the family took residence on the old Schmnidtman homestead where they have lived since. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary some years ago. Of the children born to them, a daughter, Anna, at home, and two sons, Edward and Herbert survive to mourn their father's passing. One brother, George of St. Joseph, Michigan, also survives. Funeral services will be held at the home Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock and from the German Baptist church, the Rev. MARIE SCHMIDTMANN DIES AFTER 2 YEARS ILLNESS Mrs. Marie Schmidtmann, 74, will be Buried on Monday Mrs. Marie Schmidtmann, 74, who resided on a farm located on Two Rivers, Route 2 for 51 years, died at 1 o’clock this morning on the homestead farm. She was in ill health for two years. She was born in Germany, November 30, 1861 and was brought to this county by her parents when she was a year old. She loved at Pella, Wis., near Clintonville until she was 23 years old. On December 9, 1884 she was married to Carl Schmidtmann. Her maiden name was Ewald. Mr. Schmidtmann died in 1926. Survivors are two sons, Edwin on the homestead and Herbert of Manitowoc and four grandchildren. LYDIA SPECHT Miss Lydia Specht, 47, died late yesterday afternoon after an illness of two years. She was a native of the Town of Manitowoc Rapids and was born Jan. 10, 1892. The survivors are six brothers and six sisters. MARIE SPECHT MRS. SPECHT, 81, DIES SATURDAY; RITES TUESDAY Lifelong Resident of County Dies At Home of Daughter On Manitowoc Rt. 2 Mrs. Marie Specht, 81, lifelong resident of Manitowoc county, died Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Albert Rohrbach, Manitowoc, route 2, of complications. The body will lie in state at the Pfeffer Funeral Home until Tuesday at 10 a.m. when it will be taken to the Kossuth Baptist church, to lie in state there from 10:30 until the hour of the funeral. Services will be held at the church at 2 p.m., Tuesday by the Rev. J.C. Kraenzler and burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. Six sons will act as pallbearers. Mrs. Specht, whose maiden name was Anholt, was born April 20, 1852, in the town of Kossuth. She was married to Mathias Specht May 11, 1873. They spent their entire married life on a farm in the town of Manitowoc Rapids. Mr.  Specht died in 1912 but Mrs. Specht lived on the farm until three years ago when she went to live with her daughter, Mrs. Rohrbach. Mrs. Specht had 13 children, all of whom survive, together with 42 grand- children and eight great grandchildren. The daughters are Mrs. Albert Rohrbach, route 2, Manitowoc; Mrs. Arthur Widder, Milwaukee; Mrs. William Schaus, Manitowoc; Mrs. Orville Hampton, Los Angeles; Mrs. Albert Schielke, Milwaukee; Mrs. Frank Beneditz, Wausau and Miss Lydia, at home. Sons are Charles and Herman, route 3, Two Rivers;  William, Milwaukee; Henry, route 6, Manitowoc; George, route 2, Manitowoc;  and Richard, city. Mrs. Specht is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Henry Ahlswede of Illinois and a brother Charles Anholt of Rockwood. Manitowoc Herald Times, Monday, February 12, 1934  p.2


MATHIAS SPECHT ASSESSOR OF RAPIDS DEAD Matt Specht WAS Head of Rapids Insurance Co, was 64 Matthew Specht, assessor of the Town of Rapids and president of the Rapids Mutual Fire Insurance Company, died today after an illness that confined him to his home for two months. Mr. Specht was 64 years of age and suffered from cancer and two months ago his condition became critical. Mr. Specht was one of the best known residents of the county, having made his home at Rapids practically all his life. He had served as town assessor for a number of years and when the Rapids Mutual Insurance Company was organized he was elected head of it. He was a prominent farmer of the town. Mr. Specht is survived by a widow and thirteen children. One daughter, Mrs. William Schauss being a resident of this city. Funeral arrangements have not been made.
