FATHER RAYMOND SCHRIMPF SDS Born September 19, 1922 - Died January 4, 1998 Father Raymond Schrimpf (birth name: Richard John) was born in 1922 in Francis Creek, Wisconsin, a small village north of Manitowoc. He attended Rockwood Public High School and then Salvatorian Seminary in St. Nazianz. He entered the US Army’s Air Force division in 1942, and served during World War II and after, until 1947. He then attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and received a degree in electrical engineering. Still sensing a call to the priesthood and religious life, he returned to St. Nazianz, and entered the Novitiate in 1950. He made his profession of vows on September 8, 1951. He completed his studies for the priesthood at Catholic University in Washington, DC, and was ordained in the chapel of Trinity College in that city on December 8, 1956. Fr. Raymond taught math and physics in St. Mary’s High School in Lancaster, New York; and in Jordan High School in Milwaukee. After a few years of teaching once again in Lancaster, he became the province’s Director of Finance in 1979. At the end of his term, he was named the Director of the Deferred Giving Program at Salvatorian Center in New Holstein. He ministered on the weekends in the Chilton area Salvatorian parishes and in School Hill, and in 1985, he became pastor of Holy Trinity Parish in Hohenwald, Tennessee. He returned to Francis Creek, Wisconsin, in 1987, and helped in the neighboring parishes when he could, but failing health began to take its toll. He died in St. Mary’s Home in Manitowoc on January 4, 1998, where he had lived for just a few weeks prior to his death. He was buried alongside family members in the cemetery of St. Anne’s Parish in Francis Creek. His brother, Fr. Reginald Schrimpf, was also a Salvatorian priest of the USA Province. In addition to his pastoral ministries, Fr. Raymond’s earlier skills were always put to good use wherever he served. He enjoyed upgrading the electrical wiring and doing carpentry work in the places he lived, and in his later life, the Society’s cottage in northern Wisconsin also benefited from his abilities. ******** Fr. Following service to his country in the United States Air Force, 8th Air Force, from 1943-1947, he completed 23 air missions over Nazi dominated Europe. Fr. Schrimpf attended Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wis., from 1947-1950, graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Fr. Raymond then went to Washington, D.C. and took his philosophical and theological studies at the Catholic University from 1951-1957, being ordained to the priesthood at Trinity College Chapel on December 8, 1956. For most of Fr. With the exception of a two year period from 1957-1959, he taught Math and Physics at St. Mary’s High School, Lancaster, N.Y., and was the baseball and bowling coach, as well as Director of Discipline. Survivors are the widow, four daughters, four sons, a brother and a sister. The Manitowoc Sun, January 3, 1936 (Sent in by researcher/see contributors page) ********** The following is a son of William and Catherine: INDUSTRIALIST SPEAKER AT REUNION MEETING A native of Mishicot and a graduate of the old Mishicot High School with the class of 1920, Alan C. Stoneman, who became one of the great industrialists of the world, was guest speaker at the eighth annual dinner meeting of the alumni association of Mishicot Community High School Saturday at Fox Hills Country Club. Stoneman retired last year as president of the Purex Corporation, Ltd., Newport Beach, California, and has been recognized as an industrialist in “Who’s Who of the World.” He was graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Illinois and worked as manager of several industries before associating with Purex Corp. He served as vice president of the corporation from 1944 to 1957 when he was named president. The corporation serves plants in the United States, Canada and abroad. Special guests at the program were Stoneman’s brothers and sisters: Nick Stoneman of Madison, Bill Stoneman of Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. J. J. Millard of Torrance, Calif., Mrs. Michael Koch of Mishicot, Miss Lucy Stoneman of Milwaukee, and Mrs. Grace Hessel of Francis Creek. Stoneman said, “There are things I learned here in Mishicot that were of great value and I feel a deep sense of gratitude toward this high school, the taxpayers who built it, the taxpayers who supported it, and the teachers who dedicated so much of their lives to teaching us.” “It was here in this community,” he said, “that I learned the fundamentals of American tradition. I was encouraged to believe that I could shape my own destiny and I learned that freedom is the product of self government and self discipline. I was encouraged to set my own standards; I was respected as an individual and hence, I learned to respect others; I was made aware that I was responsible for my own acts. In short, it was here that I achieved an understanding of the concept of men, which has been most valuable to me throughout my life.” Concept of Man In elaborating on his concept of man, Stoneman said, “Man has a capacity to love his country, and his fellow man, and it’s this capacity that motivates him to set worthy goals. Goals represent a design of future structure. “ Addressing the younger graduates, the speaker said it’s well to remind ourselves of the fundamental economic principles that operate in our free society. During the business meeting, Sanford Wolfmeyer, president, welcomed guests and Albert Mueller, secretary and treasurer of the perpetual scholarship commission fund, announced that half of the goal has been reached. There is enough money invested to furnish one of the two scholarships presented each year to graduates of Mishicot Community High School. He asked that more alumni join the association to help provide the scholarships. Name Officers Mrs. Ray Koch, financial secretary, announced the selection of new officers: Richard Franz, president; Erwin Lambert, first vice president; Richard Shavlik, second vice president; Richard Baugniet, third vice president; and Mrs. Richard Tringoli, financial secretary. Mrs. Koch, who has served as secretary for five years, received special recognition. Wolfmeyer noted that five members of the first graduating class, the class of 1918, were present: Mrs. Carl Schramm (Edna Wentker), Mishicot, Mrs. Victor Suster (Katie Zima), Manitowoc, Mrs. Anita Stelzer Glaser, Madison; William Stoneman and Nick Stoneman. Also introduced was Miss Edith Clayton of Green Bay who taught from 1919 to 1921 at Mishicot, Hugo Stelzer of Denver, Colo., and Milton Stelzer of Albuquerque, N.M. On behalf of the association, C. J. Spevacek, master of ceremonies, thanked Stoneman for his contributions of Purex Corp. stock. Manitowoc Herald Times, October 6, 1966 ******** ALAN C. STONEMAN OBITUARY SON OF WILLIAM AND CATHERINE MURRAY STONEMAN BROTHER OF GRANDMA PHOEBE STONEMAN KOCH Services set for Alan C. Stoneman (Photo) The Register NEWPORT BEACH--Memorial services have been scheduled for industrialist Alan C. Stoneman, longtime Newport Beach resident who went from teen-age telephone equipment tester to president of the giant Purex Corp. Mr. Stoneman, 81, died last week after a lengthy illness, said his son, Orange attorney Alan Rogers Stoneman. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Newport Harbor Lutheran Church, 798 Dover Drive, Newport Beach. Born in Wisconsin in 1902, Mr. Stoneman’s first job was as a field test supervisor of equipment for Western Electric Co. He then studied economics, corporate finance and engineering at the University of Illinois. He received a bachelor of science degree in 1926 and spent the next 10 years in industrial engineering and consulting work throughout the Midwest and East. Mr. Stoneman and his wife Lois moved to Southern California in 1936 where he joined a Los Angeles electrical products firm. During World War II he was a member of the Office of Price Stabilization. He later became president of Rayo Chemical Co. of Los Angeles, a Purex subsidiary. That began a 27-year association with Purex during which the household product company sustained explosive growth. Mr. Stoneman served as the corporation’s vice president and executive vice president, and he was elected president and chief executive officer in 1957. Purex annual sales were 1.2 million in 1957 and had ballooned to $175 million when he retired in 1966. The Stonemans moved to Orange County in 1960 and in 1969 opened management and financial consultant offices in Newport Beach. He was a founding member and trustee of Newport harbor Trust and principal owner of Stoneman Enterprises, Inc., a real estate ownership-development firm. “He was a man of tremendous strength and courage, particularly during his illness, Alan Rogers Stoneman said. “He was well known by corporate heads throughout the United States for his innovations. For example, his son said, Mr. Stoneman introduced computers at Purex when they were not yet commonly used and instigated a change from glass to plastic bottles in some Purex products ahead of the competition. “His motto was that change is the only constant. He was an innovator of management by objective. I guess you could say he had a quality of stubbornness, which made him a trailblazer, a pioneer, in a lot of areas.” Mr. Stoneman was involved in numerous charitable and civic organizations, including the YMCA, Orange County Council of Arts and Orange Empire Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. BUTTER William Stoneman, one of the proprietors of the creamery at Forestville, recently wrote an article which was published in a class journal on the subject of oleomargarine and butter. He takes the correct and sensible ground that the manufacturers of oleo should be compelled to label their goods that the purchasers may know just what they are getting for their money. We reproduce the article by request, but are unable to give the proper credit to the paper in which it originally appeared because of the failure of the party who furnished the clipping to The Advocate to send us its title. Proceeding, Mr. Stoneman says: “These men who tell about this miserable butter that comes from the farmers do not tell you how it has been put out in a war storeroom and kept for three or four days until it becomes rancid, absorbing a great many objectionable odors, but they abuse the ladies for making poor butter. That is the argument you get from gentlemen who argue in favor of oleomargarine. I admit that our packing houses manufacture oleo, and have everything as clean and as neat as a parlor. But does that make any difference? Does that change the question as to whether you shall be imposed upon or not? You asked for butter and they gave you oleo and claim the fraud is honest dealing. We talk about these things being chemically pure, but it affects the taste, you can affect the taste of a great many things by the use of drugs. “The question of tax is not tax simply for the purpose of taxation, because the supreme court of the United States decided that you could not control the manufacture of oleo, that you could not compel them to put it up in packages except under the revenue laws, and for the purpose of accomplishing that you had to levy a tax upon oleo; that is the reason it is taxed. The tax is not the question. It is protecting the public against fraud. Dairymen do not object to anybody manufacturing oleo and selling it as such, but they do object to its selling as butter. Which selling is the same as if a customer went into a meat market and asked for beef steak and was furnished with a portion of horse meat or dog meat instead. “There is another thing about it the dairy industry of this country is a growing industry and it should not be stricken down by dishonesty, and when you take the tax off of oleo that ends the authority of this government, under the decisions of the supreme court to control it and it goes into the market as anything they have a mind to call it. “Two men today are seeking pardons from the president of the United States, who were convicted of buying large quantities of Oleo in the city of Washington, for taking the wrappers off the packages and fixing it up as butter. ”The dairy interests ought to be protected. What is the difference between obtaining money by forgery and obtaining it by fraudulent representations. You denounce that as a crime, every state in the union denounces it as a crime. “And yet some are willing that this crime and wrong may be perpetrated upon the poor man because he is not able to buy dairy butter, and he must have something for his bread, protect those who cannot protect themselves. All those who are interested in the dairy industry should not fail to make an appeal to our congressman, for the Grout bill will be voted on December the 6th, 1900.” The Advocate, September 22, 1900 ******** FORESTVILLE--John Marsh and family now occupy the upper rooms of the Will Stoneman building, having vacated the Mrs. Schneider residence since its purchase by Joe Stoneman. Door County News, October 4, 1917 ******** WILLIAM STONEMAN, a prominent manufacturer of Nasewaupee township, Door county, was born in Forestville township, Door county. Wis., in 1865, a son of John and Mary (Venia) Stoneman, the former of whom, a native of England, came to Racine. Wis., in 1835. After his marriage there, in 1855, he (sic-John) removed to Door county, locating in Forestville township on a farm. He was one of the earliest settlers in this locality and was greatly respected by all who knew him. He took an active interest in politics, always voting the Democratic ticket; served as chairman of the township for some time, and gave universal satisfaction while in office. He and his excellent wife were members of the Catholic Church. They reared a family of seventeen children, of whom but six are now living, as follows: Sophia is the wife of Andrew Sloan, of Forestville township; Luke is a farmer of Nasewaupee township; Amelia is the wife of Ashley Coffrin, of Sturgeon Bay; George resides at Monument Point, Egg Harbor township; Joseph lives in Forestville township, on the old farm; William is the subject of this sketch. The mother departed this life in 1884, the father one year later, both dying upon the old homestead. William Stoneman was educated in the schools of Forestville township, where his early life was spent. After leaving school he learned the carpenter's trade, and removing to Menominee, Mich., there followed that vocation. Later he returned to Door Co., Wis., this time locating in Nasewaupee township, where he built a cheese factory, which is situated four miles from Sturgeon Bay. In 1891 he engaged in manufacturing cheese, the output from his factory per season amounting to 40,000 pounds. He still continues in this business, finding it a most lucrative one. In politics, like his father, he is a Democrat, and he has held numerous township offices, at the present time serving his second term as township clerk. He is affiliated with the Catholic Order of Foresters, and is a member of the Catholic Church. In 1889 Mr. Stoneman was married to Miss Kate Murray, daughter of John and Jane (Maloney) Murray, natives of Ireland. Mr. Murray, who at one time was a sailor, came to Wisconsin and settled in Nasewaupee township in 1866, where he purchased the farm on which he now resides. Although our subject is still a very young man, and was born in this county, he has witnessed remarkable changes in the surrounding country. Where twenty-five years ago the sight of a deer was an ordinary circumstance; where the wolves and the bears, made bold by hunger, occasionally visited the lonely pioneer cabins, and where the vision was then limited to a few hundred yards because of the forest trees, there now appear commodious farm houses and vast fields of growing grain with only now and then a bit of wood, adding, if anything, to the beauty of the landscape. He has, literally speaking grown up with the country, and takes an honest pride in its rapid development, noting, with satisfaction, its continuous changes for the better; as a father would watch the mental unfoldment of his favorite child. MAINARD H. WACHHOLZ Maynard (sic) Wachholz Killed as His Car Is Hit by Streamliner Accident Occurs at Hassemer Crossing Manitowoc county’s first traffic death occurred Sunday at a railroad crossing decreed by the Wisconsin public service commission as not in need of warning signals. The victim was Maynard Wachholz, 22, of route 2, Manitowoc. He was killed instantly when his car was struck by the North Western road’s crack “400” streamliner, southbound to Manitowoc. The accident happened shortly before 5 p.m. Hassemer’s crossing, located a half mile north of Francis Creek, was the scene of the crash. The train, a half hour late, was heading towards Manitowoc when it struck the Wachholz auto. Wachholz was on his way to visit his uncle, Louis Hassemer, of Kossuth. The body of the victim, thrown from the car upon the impact, was found 74 feet away from the crossing. (Personal photo) The car with parts of it strewn about the entire area was found 112 feet from the point of impact, according to measurements of county traffic officer William Falvey. It was a year ago on April 1 that the North Western road was ordered to install two automobile flasher light signals and a warning bell at the grade crossing in Francis Creek, where county trunk V crosses the tracks of the Green Bay extension. Second Crossing Fatality The order resulted from a hearing conducted on Jan. 26, 1949, wherein the public service commission was petitioned by a group of Kossuth citizens who requested the signals at both the Francis Creek and Hassemer crossings. In regard to the Hassemer crossing, the order said further testimony was to be taken and there is a possibility that the road may closed off with an underpass used instead. (Two lines illegible--underinked) __years. In February, 1948, Markey Larson, 54, of Francis Creek, was killed when his car was struck by a train. Because there were no witnesses to the crash, it is not known exactly how it happened. However, county officer Falvey gave his version as follows: Wachholz left the home of his father, Edwin, only a short while before the crash. The Wachholz home is located on a town road several miles east of Reifs Mills. The victim was going to visit his uncle. Tossed Through Air As he was northbound on the road leading to the crossing, he apparently noticed the streamliner. The car was braked but because of the snow the car skidded sideways into the train. It was sideswiped and tossed through the air, with its driver thrown out. Harold Hassemer, who resides on a farm near the crossing, was the first to reach the scene. He found Wachholz already dead. Officer Falvey, receiving notice of the crash at 5:01 p.m. while he was patrolling on Memorial drive, was at the scene 11 minutes later, only to learn the victim had been killed instantly. Coronary Theodore Teitgen, Sheriff Clarence Baryenbruch and Capt. William Ladwig arrived at the scene later. The coroner said an inquest will be held. The streamliner was due to arrive at the Manitowoc station at 4:44 p.m. It was already running late and the crash prevented it from arriving in Manitowoc until 5:45 p.m. Jack J. BARBARA WEBER A Sensation Quite a sensation has sprung up in our city over the report that a Mrs. Weber, who was buried at French Creek last Saturday, had been dug up and found with her shroud torn off and her hair pulled out, etc., leaving the conviction that the woman had been buried alive and on returning consciousness had smothered to death. We are happy to state, however, that on enquiry we find that it being remarked at the funeral that her face looked remarkable fresh for a dead person, the friends halted at Michael Kellner’s on their way to the grave until they sent to this city for Dr. Schallern, who pronounced her dead, and suggested that they could not bury her too soon. Like the man who was being buried by his neighbors because he would not work, and one relented and stopped the procession, offering corn, when the lazy man arose in his coffin and asked if the corn was shelled, and on being answered in the negative ordered the procession to move on!. Mrs. Webers remains have not been dug up as stated nor is there a word of truth in the horrid particulars that are being haaked about the streets by the credulous.
