JOSEPH KAUFMAN (Becker Lot) KAUFMAN SLOWLY BLED TO DEATH, MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN DANGER Milwaukee Papers Tell of Death of Local Man In That City Body Brought Here For Burial Sunday Night Sitting in his chair on a dredge on which he was employed as engineer, at Milwaukee, Joseph Kaufman of this city, slowly bled to death as he smoked his pipe and awaited the hour to begin work. In all probability he was not aware of the insidious death that was overcoming him according to Milwaukee physicians who were called, but reached Kaufman too late to save him. Mr. Kaufman had long been troubled with what is known as an open leg and his death was due to a ruptured artery, an external hemorrhage of which physicians say Kaufman was undoubtedly unaware, the loss of blood gradually weakening the man until he became unconscious and died. According to fellow workmen on the dredge, Mr. Kaufman had been engaged in dressing his injured leg and had been overcome while engaged in this work, the leg being only partially bandaged when he was found unconscious in his room. Physicians were immediately called but it was too lat. The body of Mr. Kaufman was brought here Sunday night, accompanied by a brother Peter Kaufman, Milwaukee, and his brother-in-law Gustave Sumann, of this city, who departed for Milwaukee when the message announcing Mr. Kaufman's death was received Saturday. JOSEPH I. BECKER (Fullmer Lot) (d. 1898) MAY RESULT FATALLY Joe Becker Falls From Scaffold at the Hospital and is Seriously Injured STRUCK ON HIS HEAD Falls a Distance of Fifty Feet, Fracturing His Skull—Two Others Injured As a result of an accident at the Holy Family hospital late this afternoon, Joe Becker is at the home of his parents, corner of _olmer and 24th streets in a precarious condition and his companion laborers are seriously injured. The three men were working on a scaffolding at the top of the building and were in the act of drawing up a piece of cornice from the ground, when a defective board in the platform gave way and they were precipitated to the ground, a distance of fifty feet. Becker was the first man to reach the ground, and in falling, struck his head on a rock, fracturing his skull. He was picked up by fellow workmen and taken to the home of his parents where a doctor dressed his wounds. A Herald representative was unable to learn much in regard to his condition, except that his recovery is considered doubtful. Becker is 27 years of age and is spoken of by his associates as a man of extraordinary caution. Two other laborers, Oscar Meyer and an unknown man, who were on the scaffold with Becker escaped more fortunately. Meyer struck on his back and suffered severe internal injury, but it is thought it will not result seriously. The other man was severely bruised about the head and his leg is broken. Manitowoc Daily Herald, December 20, 1898 P. 1 ******** HIS FALL WAS FATAL Joe Becker Dies from Effects of Injuries Sustained at the Hospital Yesterday. DEATH CAME AT 1 O’CLOCK Skull Was Fractured and He Remained In an Unconscious Condition Until Hour of Death. Joe Becker, who fell from a scaffold at the Holy Family hospital late yesterday afternoon, died from the effects of the injuries he sustained. He was unconscious when picked up and remained in that condition until the hour of his death. Everything that medical skill could suggest was done to revive him, but without avail, and he breathed his last at ten minutes to one this morning. The deceased was born in 1871 and has always made this city his home. He was a tinsmith by trade and was employed by E. Teigten & Co. Sober, industrious and willing, he is spoken of in terms of highest praise by his employers. He was married in 1893 to the wife who survives him and they resided at the corner of Washington and 16th streets. He was a conscientious member of the Catholic church, a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, of which society he was treasurer; and an efficient worker in the St. Boniface society. The sympathy of the community will be extended to the young wife. The funeral will be held Friday morning from the Catholic church. Manitowoc Daily Herald, December 21, 1898 P. 1 ******** A fearful accident occurred at the hospital of Holy Family on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. A scaffolding gave way and three men fell to the ground from a height of 35 feet. One, Joseph Becker, foreman of Teitgen's tin shop, received fatal injuries from which he died the following night. Oscar Meyer and Herman Krueger the two workmen with Becker received painful injuries but their recovery is regarded as certain. The men were engaged in putting on the cornice and were engaged in hauling up the last piece when the staging gave way. It had been put up that morning and the men worked upon it through the day up to the time of the accident. The spikes by which it was secured became loose and the extra weight added by drawing up the piece of cornice caused it to give way. Herman Krueger has a hip fractured and sustained other injuries of a less serious nature. Oscar Meyer is badly bruised. He has a deep gash in his forehead caused by contact with the sharp edge of sheets of tin while falling. He is the least injured of all though having most superficial hurts. Both are unmarried. The death of Joseph I. Becker is regretted by all who know him. He was married and had a wife and one child two years old. He was a young man of the highest character, active, intelligent and industrious. He was a general favorite because of his geniality and genuine worth. Mr. Teitgen says he was the best workman in his line he ever saw and that he could figure on a job with an exactitude that few could equal. He was a member of the court of Foresters, and an official and among them there is general mourning because of his death. They say he was one of the finest young men in the city and that he won the confidence of everyone he met. At noon on Tuesday he was particularly happy because of the completion of his work on the hospital. He managed the thing from start to finish and to the entire satisfaction of his employer and those for whom the work was done. Manitowoc Pilot Thursday, December 22, 1898 pg. 2

Pershing gave to Belinske to “decorate” the chair, after he had been given tonsorial care, was another possession which the deceased showed to his many friends with great pride. Set Up in Camp Born in Manitowoc 45 years ago, Richard Belinske grew up here and learned the barbering trade. He was employed by several shops here and at one time conducted his own shop. When the World War broke out and the United States entered the Struggle he enrolled in the American forces and was sent to Camp Custer. There he set up his barber chair and operated a camp barber shop for several months. When it came time for Belinske’s unit to move overseas the Manitowoc man began worrying about his chair. It was against regulations to take such equipment to France. But it happened that the company carpenter had constructed an extra large box for the company commander. There was just room for the knocked-down barber chair so it went to Europe aboard the transport ship with the other company baggage. Pershing Saw It In France, a few months later Belinske dragged forth his chair, set it up and the captain quickly forgave whatever infraction of military rule and discipline had resulted from the smuggling episode. When General Pershing came along the lines on an inspection tour he noticed the barber chair set up in the company street and made inquiry. The incident so pleased him that he decided to “Try out” the chair. Belinske was highly elated when the American commander presented him with a gold service stripe for the “arm” of the barber chair. And when the armistice was signed and the boys came back to the United States, Belinske took good care that his barber chair was included in the company property that was packed aboard ship. After reaching Manitowoc he insisted that his was the only barber chair that had made a trip to France and back again during the World War. Was Taken Ill After being discharged from service, Mr. Belinske returned here for a time and then located at Milwaukee for several years. He was taken ill there and spent some time in the Milwaukee Veterans’ hospital. A little over a year ago he went to the Black Hills sanitarium in South Dakota. In June, when his condition grew steadily worse, Mr. Belinske decided to return to Manitowoc to spend his declining days. Mr. Belinske never married. Four brothers, Hugo, Adolph, Oscar and Edwin, all of this city, and two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Kestly and Mrs. Adolph Hrudka also of this city, survive. The deceased was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. GUSTAV BENES INQUEST TO BE ORDERED IN AUTO DEATH Babe Hit By Auto of H.C. Schuette Is Dead Little Gustave Benes, four years old, who was injured yesterday fternoon when he ran in front of an auotomobile driven by Herman Schuette on Washington street, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital at 11 o’clock this morning. The child was struck by the bumper of the automobile and injured on the head. Little hope was held out for recovery. Coroner W.G. Kemper said this afternoon that an inquest would probably be ordered for investigation of the accident. The dead boy is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Benes, residing on Washington street between 13th and 14th (sic) his identity, which was not known for more than an hour after the accident, having been established by the father, who was reached at the Seating Works where he is employed and went to the hospital. Mr. Benes formerly conducted a billiard parlor in the city. The accident happened when the child rushed into the street from behind a parked car and was hidden from view by a passing truck. Mr. Schuette, who is known as one of the most careful drivers, was unable to stop when the child came into his path. Manitowoc Herald News, June 10, 1925 P. 1 ******** INQUEST IN BOY’S DEATH TOMORROW Urban Gagnon, Charles Buerstatte, Henry Esch, Sr., Spiro Tsopels, Raymond Fischer and A. J. Fanta were impaneled as the coroner’s jury to inquire into the death of Gustave Benes, five and a half year old boy who died as result of injuries suffered Tueday afternoon when he was run down by a car driven by Herman C. Schuette. The jury viewed the body of the boy at the Urbanek and Wattawa undertaking parlors this morning at 11:15 and the inquest will be held at the court house tomorrow afternoon at 3 o’clock. Manitowoc Herald News, June 11, 1925 P. 7 ******** JURY RESOLVES CAR DRIVER IN ACCIDENT Death of Benes Boy Due to Unavoidable Accident “Death due to unavoidable accident” was the verdict of the coroner’s jury investigation the accident in which Gustave Benes, 5 year old son, fatally injured when struck by an automobile on Washington street last week. The verdict was returned within fifteen minutes after testimony was concluded. Herman schuette, driver of the automobile was not called as a witness. The verdict absolves Mr. Schuette from any blame for the accident. Six witnesses were called and all testified they had not seen the boy struck nor had they seen him immediately before the accident which occurred Tuesday afternoon, June 9, on Washington street between Fourteenth and Fifteenth streets. A search failed to reveal any witness who could give full information regarding the accident. Happened in a Second Henry Holtz and his wife, who were walking east on Washingotn street at the time both said they saw the boy suddenly dart in front of the Schuette machine but that they did not know from where he came. He was running toward the north curb. Holtz called the attention of his wife to the impending accident and it was all over before they could realize what had happened. Both said the cars were parked at the north and south curbs and that Herman Schuette, who was driving the touring car which struck the Benes boy, was traveling at a slow rate of speed and brought his machine to an immediate stop. Edward Zastrow and William Crcil?, who were at work painting the porch at the Gaterman home, heard the brakes applied and saw the boy lying on the road behind the car. They had not seen the boy before the accident. Car Going Slowly Sam Adams, who was driving a truck in an easterly direction, said he saw the boy apparently dart out from between cars as he appeared suddenly directly in the path of the Schuette machine. He said he believed the wheel of the car passed over the boy. He gave the speed of the Schuette car at less than fifteen miles. Peter Benes, called to testify, said he knew nothing of the accident except what he had been told. He aid the boy had been sent to the home of his grandmother for vegetables and that the grandmother lived on Twenty-first street. Attorney Lawrence Ledvina made appearance for Mr. Schuette. Manitowoc Herald Times, Manitowoc, Wis. September 13, 1972 ******* TWO RIVERS BOY OF 14 PROMISING ART STUDENT Lester Bentley, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Bentley of Two Rivers duplicated his perfomance of last year by winning three prizes with oil paintings which he exhibited at the Manitowoc county fair last week. A marine scene took first prize and two landscapes each won a second place. In all, young Bentley had six pictures entered. Last year he made the startling record of two first and two second prizes on four entries. Lester is fourteen years old and will enter the Two Rivers High School next month, having graduated from the eighth grade of St. Lukes' school last June. It was not till about two years ago that he began to display an uncommon proficiency in the use of brushes and oils. This fact makes his work seem the more wonderful. The fact that his series last week were in competition with professional work shows that the lad possesses unusual talent and should be placed under expert teachers. HERBERT J. BERNHARDT Mishicot Farmer, Bernhardt, Killed By Falling Tractor Herbert J. Bernhardt, 44, prominent Mishicot farmer and former town assessor, was found crushed to death beneath his tractor in a field which he was ploughing about a half-mile from his home on route 1, Two Rivers, early Thursday evening. Coroner Theodore Teitgen who was called to the scene about 8:15 p.m. said today that he found Bernhardt’s body pinned to the soft earth in which the tractor had become mired. The farmer’s chest and lower part of his body had been crushed by the steering wheel of the heavy tractor which had turned almost completely back over the body. His foot was still on the clutch pedal and his head had not been injured. Upon arrival at the scene of the fatal accident, Dr. Teitgen and County Traffic Officers William Falvey and Frank Suchomel reported finding a fence post chained in front of one of the large rear wheels. The officials surmised that Bernhardt had become mired and used the post to aid him in freeing the tractor. Apparently the post had a windlass reaction on the machine, the front part of which was lifted up and backward when the power was applied. There was evidence that the tractor and gang plows had been stuck in the level but swampy field previously during the day. It was necessary to use a caterpillar tractor of the town of Mishicot to pull the machine from the body. Found Body Under Tractor. His wife, Helen, said her husband had gone to the field about 3 p.m. and when he failed to return for supper, she asked a neighbor, Ralph Schmidt, and his sons, to aid her in looking for him. They found him under the tractor a short time later and immediately called the sheriff’s office. The coroner said death was accidental and there will be no inquest. Funeral services for Bernhardt will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Specht funeral home in Mishicot and at 10 o’clock at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, Mishicot, the Rev. George Beth officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery in this city. He was born on a Mishicot farm in 1904, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Bernhardt. He took up farming when a young man and in 1937 married Miss Helen McGraw of Manitowoc. Active in County Affairs. Mr. Bernhardt was active in county and township affairs for many years. He served as Mishicot town assessor in 1943 and 1944, was president of the Mishicot branch of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin, a county director of the Mishicot Farm bureau, and a member of the Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus and the Sportsmen’s club of Mishicot. Der Nord Westen, 24 Dec. 1891 ******** CHILDREN ASK FOR OLD LEGACY Claim That Father Had Not Settled Up Estate of Dead Mother Claiming that the estate of their mother, of which he was administrator, had never been closed up and that they each have $500 coming from $2000 which was bequeathed to four children. George and William and Mrs. Peronta, children of the late Stephen Bertler have filed claims in Probate Court delaying the final settlement of the Bertler estate. The three claim that $1500 from the estate of Stephen Bertler but proceedings were halted when the plea was raised that if there is any claim against the estate from administration of Mrs. Bertler's estate, then an administrator de bonis non must be named to prosecute it and because of this there could be no further action. In the complaint the children claim that when their mother died in 1895, Mr. Bertler was appointed administrator and that there was $2000 for four children. It was claimed that one child was paid but that the estate was never closed up. In defense of the claim, attorneys for the estate charge that an insurance policy paid Mr. Bertler just previous to his death was received by the children and that this was a settlement in full of any claim. Mr. Bertler was twice married and it is the estate of his first wife which it is claimed was in administration and unsettled at the time of his death. If the claims are pressed, it is contended an administrator must be named for the estate of Mrs. Bertler. It’s then I try to collect my thoughts, Lay aside my whining, And remember that there is a plan, But I am on God’s timing.
