Budycz spent a furlough two weeks here upon his return from overseas but declares that while in the service he did not care to tell the harrowing tale which he recounts today. Private Budycz(sic), who previous to his return to the states had been reported killed in action and later to have lost a leg, had a narrow escape from “going west” when he was struck in the chest by a bullet which penetrated within an inch of his heart, according to records, which are made part of his discharge papers. Budycz enlisted at Chilton and served over a year. “I never could believe the stories of atrocities by the Germans which I read in the newspapers. I did not think that they could be possible and believed they were manufactured to excite the people for war but I know now that they were not fairy tales. I witnessed them myself and what I see, I know.” Said Budycz today. Asked to tell of some specific instances of atrocities which he had witnessed, Budycz was loath to talk but when pressed said that while his command was in Belgium, on march to the front, he had seen women and children tied hand and feet and bound to trees, dead from the shock of the terrible cruelties practiced. “I saw women’s bodies from which the clothing had been stripped, cut and slashed in horrible manner,” said Budycz who said that after it was all over and the boys were home, the true conditions would become known. Budycz told of the fate of eight American soldiers, four white and four black who had been tied to trees by German captors, their eyes cut out and the face and bodies mutilated by weapons. “Our command passed the place where these eight men were tied and we cut the bodies free so that they could be given burial.” He said. Budycz who is a nephew of Lucian Budycz of this city, said that the incidents he mentioned were only two that he had personal knowledge of and that the brutality which had been practiced by the Germans more than anything else was responsible for the fighting spirit shown by the American troops. Mr. Budycz plans to remain here for a short time and will then go to Milwaukee where he will be employed. Manitowoc Herald News, Tuesday, April 15, 1919 Page 1 ******** PACK OF CARDS SAVED LIFE OF LOCAL SOLDIER Priv. Lucyan Budycz, who served with Company D. Fourth infantry, Third division through all of its fighting, says he owes his life to the fact that he carried a pack of cards in his breast pocket. In the big drive on the Verdun front Budycz stopped a machine gun bullet but it passed through the deck of cards before reaching his body and although it inflicted a severe flesh wound an inch about the heart, he has practically fully recovered from the wound and has arrived home on a furlough visit. Budycz was wounded on Oct. 12 and was in base hospital 48 for almost three months. Priv. Budycz left here July 20, 1918 and saw action in all the engagements in which his division participated. He arrived at Newport News, Feb. 18 and after visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Budycz for a few day will return to Fort Sheridan for further treatment to his wound. EDWARD J. BUEHLER YARDS WORKER DROWNED IN RIVER EDW. BUEHLER LOSES LIFE AS HE SLIPS ON DOCK No Eye Witness To Tragedy—Hat of Missing Man Clue to Finding of Body A hat floating in the river and a missing workman were the clues last night that led to the recovery of the body of Edward Buehler, 44, an iron and steel worker at the yards of the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Corporation, whose drowning occurred while he was either on his way to the tool shed from the floating dock or on his way back to the dock from his errand. No one saw Buehler fall into the river but it is presumed that he slipped and fell into the water while walking along the plank that connects the floating dock with the regular dock as the body was found a short distance from this spot. The watch on the body stopped at 11 o’clock gave mute evidence of the time that the accident occurred. Second Drowning of Week. It was the second drowning of the week in Manitowoc, Walter Zelewski, 13 year old west side youth having drowned Tuesday night while swimming at the Rapids. Buehler although regularly employed at the shipyards on the day shift had been asked by the foreman to return last night to do some work on the freighter L.E. Geer, in the floating dock. He had been home for supper as usual at the place where he stayed with his mother, Mrs. Anna Buehler and sister, Mrs. Martin Schroeder, 1020 South Fourteenth street. After his evening meal he stayed about the home for some little time and then left for the yards to report for work at 9:30 o’clock. His fellow workman reported that Buehler had been working for less than an hour when he announced that he was in need of certain tools and he left the floating dock to go ashore to the tool shop for the tools. That was the last any one saw of him alive. Workmen Start Search. When it got to be 11 o’clock and Buehler did not return the workmen began an investigation. A workman’s cap was found floating on the surface of the water and the police were notified. Officers Novak and McConnell hurried to the scene and at 12:30 succeeded in recovering the body a short distance from the spot where the gang plank connects the floating dock with the regular dock. The police and a corp of men under Doc Hanson immediately set to work to try and revive Mr. Buehler but it was without success. The remains were removed to the Shimek and Schwartz parlors. The deceased, who was 44 years of age and a son fo the late Joseph Buehler, who died in December of last year, has been a resident of Manitowoc for the past two and a half years coming back here from Los Angeles, Cal., where he was engaged as a machinist boiler maker and iron maker for eighteen years. The mother, Mrs. Anna Buehler and one sister, Mrs. Martin Schroeder survive. The deceased was a member of the local aerie of Eagles. Burial will take place Monday morning at nine o’clock from the St. Boniface church, with interment at Calvary cemetery. Manitowoc Herald News, Friday, July 13, 1928 Page 2
EMMA BUEHLER SUICIDE: Emma Buehler of this city committed suicide yesterday morning. She had an attack of the grippe and recovered slowly. It was apparent to her friends that her mind was affected. Wednesday morning her father was about to go out to feed a cow. Emma suggested that she would do the work and went up into the hay loft. She adjusted a rope about her neck and jumped down an opening in the floor. She was found a few minutes after she quit the house, her body still warm. Dr. Thurtell and Meany were called and found the body still warm but they could not restore animation. An inquest was held before Justice Markham. Manitowoc Pilot, Wis., Thursday, February 23, 1899 pg. 3 ******** Yesterday morning between 10 and 11 o’clock Emma Buehler, daughter of Joseph Buehler here, hanged herself. She had been suffering with the grippe for a long while. She had been busy that whole morning with the wash and about 10 o’clock went to the barn, according to her mother, to feed the cow. When she didn’t come back her mother went into the building and found her daughter hanging from the rafters. She was cut down and because there were signs of life the doctor was called. By the time Doctors Thurtell and Meany could reach the place, she had expired. Der Nord Westen, 23 Feb. 1899 ********* LIFE WAS A BURDEN And Miss Emma Buehler Decides to End Her Existence. COMMITTED SUICIDE AT 10:30. Had Been Ill for Some Time and It Is Thought Despondency Prompted Her to the Rash Deed. Miss Emma Buehler only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Buehler, who reside at 922 South Eleventh street committed suicide by hanging at 10:30 this morning. She had been ill for some time suffering from an attack of the grip, and it is thought this may have affected her mind. She was ironing all morning and about 10 o'clock she told her mother that she was going to give the cow some hay and went to the stable for that purpose. She was gone so long a time that her mother became anxious and started to search for her. She climbed the stairs to the loft and a fearful sight met her eye. Swinging from the rafters, midway in the building, was the body of her daughter. The aged lady called for help and her husband and some of the neighbors rushed to her assistance. Some one was hastily dispatched for a physician while others cut the body down. Life was not entirely extinct, but before Drs. Thurtell and Meany, the physicians summoned, arrived, the girl was dead. The body was still warm and the physicians think she could not have been hanging very long, before found. The Coroner was sent for and arrived shortly before noon and ordered an inquest. It will be held before Justice Markham at 2 o'clock this afternoon. The young lady was an only daughter and was 27 years of age. She had always resided here and made her home with her parents. Of a cheerful disposition, friends are at a loss to assign a reason for the rash act. Her parents, both aged and nearing the end of life's journey, and three brother survive her. No funeral arangements have yet been made. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Manitowoc, Wis. Wednesday, Feb. 22, 1899 ********* The funeral of the late Emma Buehler was held from the Catholic church at 9 o'clock this morning. MARILYN BULL Marilyn Dies After Surgery MANITOWOC—The operation was a success and all the intelligence of modern science was in her corner but functional complications which set in some 10 hours later claimed the life early Saturday morning of Marilyn Bull, 14. She had undergone heart surgery earlier Friday at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. Following a series of nine day tests, she was wheeled into the operating room at 7:15 a.m. Friday and a mechanical heart took over for several hours while specialists went to work enlarging the aortic artery, remedying a muscular malfunction, and repairing a small hole in the heart. Funds for the operation had been raised by public subscription through the Manitowoc aerie of Eagles. Born Oct. 1, 1944, in Manitowoc, she wwas the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Bull, 1326-A S. Ninth St. She was a blue baby, suffering from a congenital heart defect that prevented her blood from getting sufficient oxygen. As she grew older, she weakened until her mother had to carry her outside to play where she sat in a sand box on warm summer days watching the other children having fun. During May, 1949?, she was taken to Children’s Hospital, Chicago, where she submitted to a new aortic-pulmonary surgery method perfected three years earlier by Dr. Willis Potts of Northwestern Univesity. Within seven weeks she was enjoying a normal life again. As she grew up, however, the orifice in her heart failed to grow with the rest of her body and gradually the old weakness returned. A proficient violinist, she had to give up the violin four years ago because of the exertion involved. She became breathless through such simple exercise as walking and to be transported to and from school. Interested in horses and riding she joined a club but had to content to watch the others while she compiled a complete and thorough scrapbook about horses. A freshman at Washington Junior High School, she was an overall B student and a straight A student in algebra. Mathematics was her favorite study and her ambition was to become a nurse. “I want to help other people like they have helped me,” she said. Doctors urged immediate surgery but family funds were limited. A Manitowoc professional man, himself a cardiac patient, discussed the matter with the Manitowoc aerie of Eagles and a public fund drive was made in November. As “Operation Heartbeat” it brought in contributions amounting to more than $3,600. Marilyn and her parents arrived at Rochester, Feb. 11 for a series of preliminary tests and examinations. First word Friday night was that the operation had been successfully completed and the patient was resting comfortably. Then complications developed and she died shortly after midnight. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Pfeffer Funeral Home. Survivors include her parents, brothers, James and John Jr. and sister, Joan, at home. He didn't do it all at once but by tiny pieces every day. At first we hardly notice and sometimes even smiled. "Oh he's just getting older," we told ourselves, our long suit was denial. The haunted look for what once was - the searching, asking, pacing - the thief had all the cards in hand, with time against Dad racing. Dad tried his best with what he had and Lords know we did too, but the thief just took control and stole each bit of him we knew. But now that hard battle's over, and Dad's resting in his final Home. JULIUS BUSCHMAN GOODRICH LINER LOST IN STORM LOCAL MAN LISTED WITH DEAD JULIUS BUSCHMAN, VET ENGINEER, LOCAL MAN, AMONG DEAD Crazed By Exposure and Suffering He Fought Rescuers Who Might Have Saved Him From The Seas Reports Say Julius Buschman, familiarly known as "Jule", a Manitowoc man and veteran engineer of the line, is among the vicitims of the loss of the Goodrich steamer Wisconsin which went down on Lake Michigan, four miles off Kenosha early this morning in the storm which raged over the sea. Mr. Buschman's body is one of seven which have been recovered and are now in the morgue at Kenosha awaiting shipment to their homes. It is expected that the body of the Manitowoc man will be brought here tomorrow for burial. According to Associated Press dispatches Mr. Buschman was alive when the Chambers Brothers fishing tug rescured fifteen from a life raft of the Wisconsin in the lake early this morning but, crazed by his terrible experience and exposure during the terrifying night on the water, Buschman fought off his rescuers and three times refused to be aided from the lake and with high seas rolling and the lives of the crew of fish tug and the fifteen men who had been taken aboard at state, the tug was forced to leave him to his fate. Buschman's body was recovered from the lake some time later and was brought into Kenosha at 10 o'clock this morning. Among Last on Sinking Boat Engineer Buschman, according to members of the crew, was among the last to leave the sinking Wisconsin as the boat was going down. With Capt. Morrison and other officers of the steamer, he was seen on the vessel as the life boats and raft drew away in the heavy seas, and left the boat only when a mere chance for life was ???? hours later the ???? tug battling its way to the sunken craft, found Buschman in the lake but repeatedly he refused aid of resucers to reach him and begged to be left alone. After three attempts, with the huge waves tossing their frail craft dangerously, the tug was freed to abondon its effort and return to port with the fifteen others which it had taken aboard. News Great Shock Here News of the tragedy and the loss of Mr. Buschman came as a great shock here. Early reports said that it was believed that all aboard the boat, except one passenger who had leaped overboard, were safe and this reassuring news was received at the Buschman home at 1833 New York avenue where the wife and son waited word. Then came the later report of the failure to rescue the engineer and then the one telling of the recovery of the body, shattering all hope and enshrouding the home in the deep gloom of its loss. William Buschman, a son was at the Herald- News office when the report of the finding of his father's body was received over the wire and hastened home to console his mother, whom he had left a short time before happy in the belief that her husband had escaped the tragedy and was safe. With Goodrich Line 40 Years Mr. Buschman had been with the Goodrich line for forty years, and was one of the best known and most popular men in the employ of the company. He had sailed many of its vessels, having started with the line as chief engineer of the old steamer Menominee. Later he was on the Ludington and was in charge of the engine room of the steamer Iowa when the boat was lost off Racine in the ice jam a few years ago, Mr. Buschman with members of the crew escaping that disaster alive. Later he was engineer of the steamer Indiana and when the Wisconsin was rebuilt after purchase by the Goodrich company, he was placed in charge of that vessel as engineer. A Native of Wisconsin Born at Baraboo, this state, Mr. Buschman had spent most of his life on the lakes. He was 70 years of age and came to Manitowoc with his father in youth, the elder Buschman having for many years conducted a cooperage shop here. As a boy Mr. Buschman became intereted in navigation and studied to perfect himself as an engineer and for two decades he had been recognized as one of the best on the Great Lakes. Mr. Buschman is survived by his wife, a son William, who makes his home here, one daughter, Miss Leta, who is a teacher in the Milwaukee public schools and two brothers, Albert, an engineer at Milwaukee and Edward who operates a machine plant at Chicago. Two Known Here Rescued Harvey Lyons, purser of the Wisconsin, and Louis Lesperance, of Two Rivers, cabin watch, both of whom were well known here were among those rescued from the sea. Mr. Lyons is also a veteran of the Goodrich line and has a wide circle of friends in this city. Manitowoc Herald News, April 9, 1923 P. 4 ******** WILL ASK STATE TO PAY DAMAGES IN DEATH CASE Local Woman Will Ask Compensation For Husband A claim for death benefits under the compensation act will be filed against the State of Wisconsin by Mrs. M. R. Butler, former Manitowoc woman, after the death of her husband who died at the state sanitarium at Wales ten days ago, a victim of lung trouble, alleged to have resulted from work in employ of the state at that institution. Mrs. Butler, who was Sophia Friedl, of this city, has returned here to take up her home with her mother. Mrs. Butler will claim full benefits for death in her claim against the state. Basis of Claim In the claim to be made by Mrs. Butler it will be set forth that her husband’s death was directly traceable to infection of the lungs which resulted from inhalation of poisonous gas fumes from burning coal, when he assisted in removing coal from a bunker which had taken fire at Wales. While Mr. Butler was working as a fireman at the state institution fire broke out in one of the large coal bunkers and threatened the institution. Mr. Butler with other employes were put at work in removing the coal from the burning pile, by use of wheelbarrows and Mr. Butler was overcome by the smoke and fumes and became ill. It is alleged that the experience was the cause of permanent lung trouble which resulted in his death ten days ago. Was in Robust Health Previous to the experience Mr. Butler is said to have been a man of robust health but physicians who attended him at the institution were unable to counteract the effects of the smoke on the lungs and his health declined rapidly. The matter of compensation was taken up with the Industrial Commission during the illness of Mr. Butler and partial recognition of the claim is said to have been secured. With his death claim for full benefits will be made. Under the state law $5,000 is the maximum in death cases. Manitowoc Herald News, April 20, 1923 P. 1

Injuries suffered when he fell into a trench and was struck by buckets of the trench digger at shortly after 10 o’clock resulted in the man’s death at the hospital a half hour later. His leg was broken and his chest was crushed. Butz, who has been employed by the city utility department since 1921, was engaged in shoveling loose dirt back into the trench and was following the digger. Apparently he stumbled and fell into the trench, according to Basius Friedensberger, the only man who witnessed the accident. In falling, Butz struck one of the shovels and then struck by others before the operator could stop the big machine. Friedensberger’s cry for help brought a number of men to the scene. Butz was taken from the trench and rushed to the hospital but his injuries were so serious that he died a half hour later. Worked For Years. Arthur J. Mueller, South Sixteenth street, foreman in charge of the job had left only a few minutes before the accident to visit one of the other jobs where the city is laying water mains. Butz had been doing the sort of work he was engaged in this morning for years. Still hale and active, Mr. Butz had made it a habit for some time to arise early and go to the Mueller home and Mr. Mueller would take him to the job. This morning he had arrived at the Mueller home shortly after 6 o’clock. The two started out and had been on the scene of the job, Lincoln boulevard between Waldo boulevard and Oak steet, before 7 o’clock. Mr. Butz had expressed himself as being satisfied to just finish out the month and then quit to take things easy for the remainder of his life and was in unusually good spirits this morning. Then without warning came the accident. German Born. Born in Germany, November 2, 1851, Mr. Butz would have been seventy-seven at his next birthday this week. He came to this country at the age of fifteen and has made his home in Manitowoc since that time. Forty-seven years ago he was married to Catherine Brigger and the couple were looking forward to celebrating their golden wedding anniversary. Surviving are the widow; four sons, Edwin, Reinhardt, Herman and Hugo, the latter being of Grand Rapids, Mich., while the other three make this city their home; two daughters, Mrs. Warren Gamble, at home, and Mrs. Joseph Prehal of Cicero, Ill., nine grandchildren and one sister, the later living in Germany. Funeral service for Mr. Butz will be held from the home at 1414 South Fourteenth street with services at 10 o’clock at St. Boniface Catholic church, Rev. Letz officiating. Burial will be at Calvary cemetery. Manitowoc Times, Tuesday, October 30, 1928, Page 1
