Burial will take place tomorrow morning from the home of his sister, Mrs. Fricke, 1816 Clark street. Manitowoc Herald News, Tuesday, October 29, 1918, Page 4 ********** I think what happened here is that he died and was buried in Montana and moved to Calvary in 1918 and his actual death date was put on the stone is why the stone reads 1913. I double checked with the cemetery office and his stone does read 1913. *Note: Cemetery records also have death year of 1916.

EDWARD GERL EDWARD GERL, THIS CITY, IN LIST OF MISSING ON SHIP SUNK BY U-BOAT Son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Gerl, Wollmer Street, First Manitowoc Boy to Fall Victim to Undersea Warfare of the Enemy WAS WITH CONTINGENT WHICH LEFT CITY IN OCTOBER FOR SERVICE Another Manitowoc name has been added to the honor roll??Died for His Country? and the city today mourns the loss of its first soldier victim of the U-boat in person of Edward Gerl whose name is listed among those missing following the sinking of the British steamer Moldavia in the English channel Thursday. Twelve of 53 American soldiers reported lost in the sinking of the steamer are Wisconsin boys. Edward Gerl, who was 28, and a son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Gerl, Wollmer street, this city, was with the second contingent which left here in October and was at Camp Custer for a short time. The young man was a graduate of the Manitowoc County Training School and later was engaged in teaching in the county for two years, later taking an examination and entering the railway mail service in which he was at work when called to the colors. Two Brothers In Service. First intimation that the local soldier was among those missing and probably dead on the Moldavia was conveyed in Associated Press dispatches to the Herald today at 11:20 am and the family of Frank Gerl, brother, was informed of the news, and it was the son who soon after conveyed the sad intelligence to the parents at their home on the West side. The news was a terrible shock to Mr. and Mrs. Gerl who have had three of their sons respond to the call of the colors, two of the boys having left within the past month, Richard to go to Columbus Barracks, O., and William as a member of the contingent sent to Lansing, Mich., two weeks ago to enter the Michigan College for special training as an automobile mechanic. Overseas Three Weeks. It was believed that Gerl was safe and in France receiving his training, because of the fact that word only recently was received from Leonard Pfeffer, another Manitowoc man who was with Gerl in North Carolina where they were assigned in camp, to the effect that he (Pfeffer) was safe in France. If Pfeffer conveyed the news from France, it is possible that the two Manitowoc boys became separated in England, Pfeffer being assigned to an earlier boat which landed him safely. Gerl was among the first of the local contingents to leave the city and was transferred to Camp Greene, Charlotte, N.C. One of the last letters was received by his brother Frank which was dated April 4 in which it was intimated that he was soon to leave for New York to take passage for England. In a later letter to his parents, Gerl wrote on the eve of his departure from New York, stating that he was leaving in the morning. This letter was undated but was received here about three weeks ago. Judging from the interim between that time and now, Gerl was assigned to cross the channel with the Moldavia?s contingent almost immediately after he arrived in Liverpool or some other English coast port. First Victim of U-Boat. News of the loss of Gerl, the first Manitowoc boy to fall victim to the ruthless U-boat warfare of the enemy was a shock to the community and called forth widespread sympathy for the bereaved family. While there is a chance that Gerl may have been picked up and saved, the hope is not strong as it is feared that the men lost on the Monrovia were killed outright in the explosion. With the news of the death of another local boy in the service, the departure of the contingent of 306 to leave tonight, has added more significance and will impress more emphatically upon the community, the dangers into which they owe to stand behind the country for which their sons are ready to battle and die. Edward Gerl was popular with a large circle of friends and was a clean cut, upright young man whose memory will be cherished. Gerl was a member of Co. B, 58th U.S. Inf., Fourth division. EDWARD J. GERL (d. 1945 KIA) Eddie Gerl, 3-Sport Letter Winner Killed 1942 All-Conference Ship Center Is Killed In France PFC Eddie Gerl, 20, all-conference Lincoln high school center in 1942, and a three-sport star on Ship teams, as killed in France January 3. A telegram from the War Department advised his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Gerl of 1809 Wollmer street late yesterday that their son had been killed in action in the fighting in the Belgium bulge. He was a member of an infantry unit with the First U.S. army. Gerl is the second Lincoln high athlete to be killed in France. Staff Sergeant John (Jack) Krohn, who was killed late in December, was graduated at Lincoln high school in 1941, and was a letter winner in both football and basketball. A requiem high mass for PFC. Gerl will be held at the St. Pauls Catholic church next Wednesday morning at eight o?clock. Was Also Co-Captain In addition to being selected by Fox Valley conference sports writers in the fall of 1942 for the post of center on the all-conference team Gerl was co-captain of the Lincoln football team that season. His play was a big factor in the success of Coach Nello Pacetti?s Red and White eleven in 1942. Although Gerl weighed only a little over 150 pounds in his senior year his scrappy defensive play made him a standout in Valley conference games. He was a deadly tackler, a keen play spotter and fast. He intercepted many passes and his offensive play left little to be desired. In addition to playing in the line in his three years at Lincoln, Gerl also won letters in basketball and track. He was a guard on the basketball team and a pole vaulter on the track squad. Coaches Pacetti and Al Guepe, under whom Gerl worked, had words of praise today for the former grid, basketball and track star. Always cool under fire he was able to carry out orders from the coaches to the last letter. Eddie Gerl was born in this city in 1925 and attended Washington junior high school, from which he was graduated in June 1943. He was class treasurer in his junior year, homecoming king in his senior year, on the prom committee and a member of the student council. Overseas in August He entered the service in October, 1943, and trained at Camp Wolters and Howzie in Texas before going overseas in August, 1944. He served in a hospital unit in Belgium in December and Life magazine of December 11 carried a full page picture of Gerl and three companions carrying a wounded American doughboy back from the front lines in Belgium. By a strange coincidence the late Edward Gerl, after whom Private Gerl was named, was the first Manitowoc soldier killed overseas in World War I. Eddie?s uncle was drowned in the English channel in 1918, when a German U-boat sank the transport Moldavia. Surviving PFC. Gerl are his parents and a brother, Corporal William Gerl, now in the U.S. air corps overseas. Manitowoc Herald Times, January 18, 1945 P. 14 ******** Requiem Masses For Soldiers To Be Said Two requiem high masses for Manitowoc soldiers killed overseas are to be held in Manitowoc churches tomorrow and Wednesday. A high mass for Corporal Elwood Krueger, who was killed in Belgium Dec. 23, will be held at Holy Innocents church Tuesday morning at 7 a.m., the E.A. Radey officiating. A mass for Pfc. Eddie Gerl, also killed in Belgium, will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the St. Pauls Catholic church, the Rev. Martin Jaekels officiating. Manitowoc Herald Times, January 22, 1945 P. 2

JULIUS GERL Death by drowning Sat. of Julius Gerl, who was about 20 yrs. old and the son of Andreas Gerl. He was swimming in the Manitowoc River near the railroad bridge with two companions ? They sought to help but the body was not found until later. Burial was Mon. in the Catholic Cemetery. He and a companion named Christiansen were in swimming. After swimming across the river, Christianson suggested they walk over by the railroad bridge, but Geral replied that he'd swim across even though he should drown. When he reached a certain point he called for help and sank. There is said to be a whirlpool at this place, but this exists only in the imagination, as it is not apparent from the surface. Geral was a barber and worked for Charles Cornwell. The body was recovered soon after the drowning occurred. An inquest was held before Justice Willinger. RICHARD GERL (d. 1947) Richard A. Gerl Drowns in Bay Boat Upsets While Fishing Accident Occurs in Brussels, Door County Richard A. Gerl, 56, 1233 South 14th street, lost his life Sunday morning at 9:30 when the boat in which he was fishing with his brother, William, and two other local companions overturned in the choppy waters of Green Bay, a short distance from Brussels in Door county. Gerl, the third of five brothers to drown, had left Manitowoc at 6:45 Sunday morning with his brother, William A. Gerl, 1809 Wollmer street, Conrad (Connie) Althen, route 2, Manitowoc, and Luke Mrotek, route 5, Manitowoc, arriving at the Schadaux docks near Brussels about 9 a.m. According to William Gerl, the party went about three blocks into the bay in their 18-foot Thompson outboard motor boat, dropped the bow anchor overboard and fished for about 20 minutes. Then Gerl said, the water became a bit choppy and they threw the stern anchor over the side bringing the craft broadside into the waves. This, he admitted, was a mistake as the waves immediately filled the boat, turning it over and throwing the four men into the water. Richard Gerl, unable to swim, was forced about 15 feet away from the overturned boat but managed to grab onto an oar and an inflated cushion. The other three men clung to the sides of the boat. Sank From Sight Richard managed to stay above water for about 15 minutes, his brother said this morning, ?but the waves prevented any of us from going to him and he eventually sank from sight.? Mrotek then swam to shore, retrieved his clothing and started to swim back to his companions. In the meantime William Gerl and Althen had managed to cut the ropes from the anchors and continued to hang onto the sides until it drifted into the beach, a matter of only a few minutes. Shortly thereafter Richard?s body was washed ashore within 25 feet of where the boat came in. William said that his brother?s body was still warm and that he opened his eyes. Several Manitowoc men, also fishing in the bay, applied artificial respiration in an effort to revive him, but were unsuccessful. Responding to a call, U. S. Coastguardsmen from the Sturgeon Bay station arrived with a small boat?but no pulmotor. William said that he himself was completely exhausted upon reaching shore and could not have hung onto the boat more than three minutes more. He was taken to a nearby home, suffering from exhaustion and bruises received when dragged cross rocks near the beach. Although exhausted from their ordeal, neither Mrotek nor Althen were reported to have suffered any physical injury. Two Brothers Drown About 31 years ago, Julius Gerl, then 22, lost his life while swimming in the Manitowoc river at the foot of 21st street. Edward Gerl, another brother, was lost at sea in May, 1918, when the American troop ship, upon which he was being sent to the fighting in France, was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine in the English channel. Richard Gerl, an employe of the Rahr Malting company here, was born in this city in 1891, the son of the late Andrew and Katharine Gerl. He attended local graded schools and the county training school for teachers. He had always resided in this city except for six years when he made his home in Milwaukee. Gerl entered military service in May, 1918, serving in France as a combat infantryman with the (Continued on Page 12, Col. 6) RICHARD A GERL DROWNS IN BAY (Continued from Page 1) 53rd infantry until his return to this country in June, 1919. T-7 ******** EXTRA!! FACED DEATH IN A STRANGE MISHAP, SAVED "Jack" Goetz, Local Boy Has Thrilling Experience at Milwauee PRISONER UNDER WATER 3 HOURS Milwaukee, Dec. 2 -- His head caught between two piles under water in the Milwaukee river, John Goetz, a Manitowoc man employed with the bridge crew of the Pellet & McMullen Co., of that city on Oneida Street bridge, faced death under most unusual conditions this morning and for several hours, Goetz was held prisoner, his head down, while fellow workmen failed in their efforts to release him. Goetz has been employed with the Pellet & McMullen crew for some time and recently was permitted to do work as a diver at his own request and it was while engaged in diving this morning that he became caught between two piles and his life endangered. Goetz was caught in such a manner that his head hung down but fortunately the accident did not interfere with the air tube and apparatus and it was possible to keep the man supplied with air and at 2 o'clock this afternoon, Goetz was said to be alive and all right and it was believed that he would be rescued without danger. However, the man's position is perilous and should there by any interference with the apparatus, he would suffocate and die. For more than three hours, Goetz was held prisoner, head downward and under water but a fellow diver succeeded in releasing him at 3 this afternoon and Goetz insisted upon continuing his work, having suffered no serious effects from his experience. The danger to Goetz in his position while caught in the piling was that the air apparatus might go wrong or that the air tune might become disconnected through the effort to release the man in which event his death would have been almost certain. At one time, the advisability of attempting to pull out the piling in order to release the man was considered but this was abandoned as impracticle because it might endanger Goetz. Weighted down by the heavy diving suit and with his head hanging down because of the manner in which he was caught, Goetz was still able to signal for air and when a fellow diver was working in an effort to release him, Goetz held out his hand to indicate that he was all right and realized that every effort was being made to release him. It was feared however, that Goetz could not be rescued and his escape from death is considered miraculous. Goetz is a son of Mrs. Goetz, So. 12th Street and is 25 years of age. He had been employed with the Pellet & McMullen crew at Milwaukee for some time and desired to become a diver and was given a chance. The determination of Goetz to continue work after his experience is indicative of his nerve say friends. Manitowoc Daily herald - Mon., Dec. 2, 1911 ******** GOETZ HOME, TELLS FEELING FACING DEATH Southside Boy Who Was Near Death Has Recovered WAS UNCONSCIOUS WHEN RESCUED John Goetz, the Southside Boy who while employed as a diver at Milwaukee, had his head caught between two piles sat the bottom of the Milwaukee River and was held prisoner, head downward for three hours and twenty minutes and was rescued all but unconscious, had recovered sufficiently Sunday to make the journey at his home in this city and is at the home of his parents, 1122 So. Tenth Street. Mr. Goetz will remain here for a time and may later accept a position offered him by the Wm. Rahr Sons Co. Goetz,, who passed through one of the most trying ordeals set for man, does not show any ill effects from his experience, due probably to the excellent physical condition in which he is in, but he has no desire to repeat the experience. Discussing his narrow escape, Goetz said: "I feel as though I had undergone the most horrible experience that a man can ever meet with when one sees death staring him in the face is helpless to avert it, the sensation is awful, but no word can describe my feelings. Gradually, I felt the life and energy leaving and as I relaxed I cared not whether I lived or died. Despondency overcame me. I was dying for lack of which nature gives bountifully - air. One breath of air and I will resign my life to any purpose", by brain kept buzzing. Goetz was rescued after three hours and twenty minutes after a fire tug and two divers had been called in the effort to release him. He was removed to the hospital and recovered in a short time. Goetz is 30 years old and a son of John Goetz. He had been employed by the Pellet & McMullen Co at Milwaukee several weeks. Goetz declared that he may continued work as a diver. WILLIAM GOETZ From: HISTORY of DOOR COUNTY WILLIAM GOETZ "William Goetz who is operating a one hundred and twenty acre farm of excellent land on section 34 Nasewaupee township and a forty acre tract in Forestville township was born February 9 1886 in Door county. His parents were Nick and Agatha Goetz the former born in Germany on the 20th of June 1841 and the latter in Manitowoc county Wisconsin in 1855. The mother however is of German descent. The father was brought to the United States in childhood and grew to mature years in Manitowoc county. He remained there until 1885 when he removed to Door county and located upon the farm now owned by his son William. The family are Catholics in religious faith. The mother passed away in 1888 and is buried in the Maplewood cemetery. To Mr. and Mrs. Goetz were born seven children as follows: Louise who was born January 16 1875 and died March 20 1905; Philip a resident of Manitowoc county; Frank who is living in Saskatchewan, Canada; Josephine who is the wife of George Brey; Mary who married George Kolbeck; Peter a resident of Wisconsin; and William of this review. The last named received a public school education and also devoted much of his time as a boy and youth to helping his father with the farm work thus gaining a practical knowledge of the cultivation of the fields and caring for stock. At length he purchased the home place comprising one hundred and twenty acres in Nasewaupee township from his father and he also owns forty acres in Forestville township. The land is under cultivation and he annually harvests good crops. He also raises stock to some extent and finds that the two phases of farming coordinate well. Mr. Goetz was married November 25, 1913 to Miss Ella Hennessey, who was born March 27, 1888, a daughter of John Hennessey of Nasewaupee township. To this union have been born two sons; Norbert, born November 8, 1915; and Harold, born June 8, 1917. Mr. Goetz casts his ballot in support of the candidates of the democratic party and takes the interest of a good citizen in public affairs but has never desired to hold office. In religious faith he is a Roman Catholic. Funeral arrangements have not been made. On Friday Mrs. Goetzler observed the ninety-first anniversary of her birth and on that day was about as usual and welcomed guests who visited her to tender congratulations on the event. A woman of remarkable vitality, Mrs. Goetzler, up to the day she was stricken had attended to her own household duties and had almost daily visited neighbors and friends in the city. Despite her 91 years, she was active and appeared far younger, both in age and spirit and her death, after so short an illness is a great shock. Mrs. Goetzler was born at Amorbach, Bavaria, May 11, 1826 and came to New York with her parents as a girl. She was married in that city to Mr. Goetzler and the couple resided there for some time. More than fifty-five years ago Mr. and Mrs. Goetzler came to Wisconsin, locating in Manitowoc where they have since resided, Mr. Goetzler being one of the pioneer mason contractors of the city. The couple recently celebrated their iron wedding, the sixty- fifth anniversary of their marriage. CHARLES GOETZLER From Der Nord Westen, 02 Nov. 1905: Tues. evening Valentin Goetzler, well-known local mason contractor, was notified that his grandson, Charles Goetzler, son of Edward Goetzler here, had been overtaken and killed by a train near Peotone, Illinois. Further details of the terrible incident were not forthcoming. The unfortunate man had been identified by a letter from his grandfather found in a pocket; which resulted in his grandfather being notified instead of the father. The deceased was born here 15 Dec. 1877 and was a mason contractor like his father and grandfather. He had been working in Kankakee, Illinois, the last 2 yrs., and it is said that he was on his way to Peotone on foot along the railroad tracks when the incident occurred. His relatives have gone to bring the body here. ******* (Charles Goetzler/b. Dec. 19, 1877, Manitowoc/d. 1905/Son of Edward and Susanna Fankel Goetzler)

VALENTINE GOETZLER Valentine Goetzler, pioneer contractor of the city and a man of 86, today started on a journey to New York where he goes to attend the funeral of his son-in-law who died suddenly as result of a stroke of paralysis. Mr. Goetzler wanted to make the trip and being in good health, determined to do so. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Saturday, February 19, 1916 P.5 ******** VALENTINE GOETZLER, PIONEER MASON CONTRACTOR OF CITY PASSES AWAY, GRIEF OVER WIFE'S DEATH HASTENS END One of city's Oldest Residents, but Enjoyed Robust Health Up to Time of Wife's Death ten Weeks Ago, Shock Lays Him Low and He Never Rallied - Was 87 Valentine Goetzler, pioneer contractor of the city and one of its oldest residents, passed away at his home on South Eighth street at an early hour this morning, his demise occuring just ten weeks to a day from that of his aged wife, the shock of whose death is believed to have hastened that of Mr. Goetzler. Despite his advanced age Mr. Goetzler had enjoyed robust health and up to the last illness of his wife he had been about the city daily. Following her burial Mr. Goetzler took to his bed the next day and never rallied from the shock, his condition showing gradual decline as day following day until the end came this morning. He was 87 years of age. Mr. and Mrs. Goetzler came to this city 55 years ago and their married life covered a span of 67 years when death separated them ten weeks ago. Two years ago they celebrated their diamond wedding and on that occasion both were in the best of health. Mrs. Goetzler's health failed some months ago and her husband, companion for three score and more years, worried over her condition and when death came to her, the shock shattered his health and he never recovered. Born in Germany Jan. 7, 1830, Mr. Goetzler, with his wife came to America 60 years ago, the couple spending five years in New York and Milwaukee before coming to this city to take up their home. Mr. Goetzler for 40 years was engaged in business as a mason contractor and during that time had built many of the city's leading buildings, including the Williams House, the Carnegie library, the Teitgen block, present city hall and the Vogelsang block. He retired from active work fifteen years ago but retained an interest in building operations up to his death. Mr. Goetzler was one of the best known residents of the city and was known for his industry and honesty. He is survived by seven children, Mrs. Elizabeth Zochel, Edward Goetzler, of this city; Mrs. Casper Stockinger, Colon, Neb.; Sister Dolores, Zanesville, O.; Mrs. Tecla Buegler, Stapelton, N.Y.; Rudolph Goetzler, this city; Mrs. Gammerschausen, Milwaukee. The funeral will be held from St. Boniface church Friday morning, with interment at Calvary cemtery. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Tuesday, July 31, 1917 P.1 ******** VALENTINE GOETZLER, AGED CONTRACTOR, SERIOUSLY HURT AT LAKE FRONT YARDS OF NORTHWESTERN THIS MORNING FAILED TO HEED WARNING GIVEN BY FAMILY Valentine Goetzler, pioneer mason contractor and one of the best known residents of the city, was seriously injured in the Lake front yards of the Chicago & Northwestern company early this morning in falling from or jumping from the door of a box car in which he was engaged in sweeping grain for food for his chickens. Mr. Goetzler struck his head against a rail or stone and a deep gash six inches across was cut in his head. The injury, while serious, is not fatal, though the advanced age of Mr. Goetzler, who is past 84 years of age, adds to the danger in his case. Mr. Goetzler, who is an early riser, has for a long time made it a practice to visit the yards of the N.W. to sweep cars, having permission of the company. As usual he visited the lake front this morning at 4 o'clock and while engaged in sweeping a car, a switch engine hooked onto the car and when it started to move, Mr. Goetzler, who some time ago was carried from the lake front to the Calumet yards by a switching train, threw his broom and sack from the car and in attempt- ing to jump, either stumbled or fell striking head first on a stone or one of the iron rails of the track. Members of the train crew found Mr. Goetzler bleeding profusely from the injury to his head and he was taken aboard the engine and hurried to the Northwestern depot and Rudolph Goetzler, a son, was notified, and physicians summoned. Some complaint is made that it was impossible to secure the police patrol which was called for to remove Mr. Goetzler to the hospital, it being said that no one was at the station, but later the patrol reached the depot and Mr. Goetzler was taken to the hospital. After his injuries had been dressed, he was removed to his home where, it is said, his condition is favorable. Mr. Goetzler's family had opposed his visits to the N.W. yards and no later than last night his son R. Goetzler, had counselled him to give up the practice, but the aged man said that he could not sleep and that it occupied his time in the morning and he resumed his trip today, only to meet with the accident. Mr. Goetzler is one of the best known pioneers of the city and for many years has been engaged in the contracting business, his son now conducting the business. An empty bottle which may have contained poison, supports the suicide theory although members of the family declare that Gonia had always said that nothing could induce him to commit suicide. Mr. Gonia's body was found by Mr. Strupp who discovered the dead man about 400 feet from where his automobile had been parked at the roadside. The body was resting upon an oil cloth which the dead man had evidently placed on the ground himself and there was no weapon or wounds to indicate that Gonia had been the victim of an attack. Discovery of the emptied bottle later led to the suicide theory, although it is possible Gonia may have entered the woods to rest and have been stricken by a heart attack as friends say that for some time he had not been well. He was a heavy man and might easily have been subject to heart affection (sic). Is There Woman in Case? Mystery surrounds the case, even though it be one of suicide by poisoning and it was reported today that an investigation would be made in an effort to learn the identity of a woman who has evidenced much interest in the dead man. Gonia left home yesterday morning after a telephone call, believed to have come from the woman and twice yesterday a woman called the home but when others answered the telephone, left the wire. Again this morning the same voice made inquiry as to truth of reports of the finding of the body but efforts to identify the woman or trace the call were unavailing and nothing is known of her. According to friends Mr. Gonia had been nervous and worried for several days but he had refused to confide his troubles. Before he received the telephone call yesterday Mr. Gonia had said that he proposed to go into the woods to pick greens and this leads the family to believe that the suicide theory is untenable. Mr. Gonia is said to have had no financial difficulties and the family members say that he was in apparent health and good spirits yesterday. Was Native of iCty (sic) Mr. Gonia was a native of this city, having been born here March 17, fifty- three years ago. He had made his home here practically all his life and was widely known and respected. For some years he had conducted a hotel and saloon at Tenth and Washington street catering to a select patronage of personal friends who made the place their headquarters. Four years ago Mr. Gonia's wife died and he is survived by five children, Mrs. Paul Zagrodnik, Miss Helen Gonia, Raymond, Theodore and Arthur all of this city. Five brothers, Frank of Two Rivers, Joseph, Anton and Ludwig of Milwaukee and George of California and five sisters Mrs. Frank Bonk and Mrs. Frank Koskoswsy, of Two Rivers, Mrs. Clarence Meyer, Milwaukee, Frances, of Chicago and Mrs. Floyd, Morrison, Ill., also survive.
