CALVARY CEMETERY OBITUARIES

MARION E. GRACZYK Mrs. Norbert (Marion) Graczyk, age 83, a resident of St. Mary's Home at Felician Village, Manitowoc, and formerly of 1511 Kuhl St., Manitowoc, entered eternal life Friday morning, Jan. 19, 2007, at Froedtert Hospital, Milwaukee. Marion was born Oct. 2, 1923 in Manitowoc. She was the daughter of the late Lester and Martha Skarda Maresh. Marion was a graduate of Lincoln High School with the class of 1941. On July 20, 1946, she married Norbert "Nubs" Graczyk at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Marion was the first school secretary at Holy Innocents Catholic School in Manitowoc, volunteering her time as secretary in the 1950s, and then as a paid employee in the 1960s until she and her husband, Nubs, relocated to Sturgeon Bay in 1971. Many school children throughout those years affectionately called her "Mrs. G." While living in Sturgeon Bay from 1971 until 1986, she worked for the Sturgeon Bay School District and Bay Print. She put in numerous volunteer hours while living in Sturgeon Bay, fundraising for the Door County Memorial Hospital House and Garden Walk. In the 1950s and 1960s, she volunteered to teach the novice nuns at Silver Lake College how to drive, and would always have her car available for their driving tests or errands. Marion was a member of St. Francis of Assisi, the St. Clare Society, Woodland Dunes, Lakeshore Humane Society and Camp Sinawa. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 and a half years, Norbert (Nubs); one son, Thomas Graczyk, Manitowoc; two daughters and one son-in-law: Elizabeth and Stephen Buckingham, Stillwater, Minn.; Mary Graczyk, Manitowoc; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Lester and Joanne Maresh, Milwaukee; James Maresh, Dundee, Ore.; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Wilda and Janet Sepnafski, both of Manitowoc; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Milton and Joanne Graczyk, Pound; wonderful and supportive nieces, nephews, cousins, along with other relatives and friends. Marion was preceded in death by her parents: Lester and Martha Maresh; one sister, Antoinette (Toni) Place; two sisters-in-law, Loie Maresh and Eleanor Prahl; four brothers-in-law, Joseph Sepnafski; Raleigh (Ozzie) Wilda; Richard Graczyk; and Doug Prahl. A special phrase she always told her family and friends was "if I can't be home with Nubs, the next best thing is living at St. Mary's Home." She loved the nursing home and all the people who took care of her in any way. Please no flowers. She never wanted money spent for that when she knew other people needed food, shelter or clothing. She always wanted people to donate their time and talents to make this world a better place, especially for "good old Manitowoc." Donations should be made to the donor's choices since Marion loved and had a variety of interests. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Gerald Foley. Entombment will take place at Calvary Mausoleum, Manitowoc. Relatives and friends may call at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. The Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 628 N. Water St., Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements. The family wishes to thank Dr. Mary Govier, for giving her the quality medical care with dignity in her final years. God bless the people in the medical/nursing profession. Herald Times Reporter, Jan. 20, 2007 ********** Inadvertently omitted from Marion's obituary was a deceased brother-in-law: James (J.O.) Place. NORBERT 'NUBS' GRACZYK  Norbert Graczyk, age 84, a native of Manitowoc, entered into eternal life unexpectedly on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007, at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay while surrounded by his loving daughters.  Nubs was born on Jan. 2, 1923, in Manitowoc, to the late Joseph and Elizabeth Watzka Graczyk. He graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1941. He later went on to attend classes at the University of Wisconsin. Following his education, he was employed at The Manitowoc Company Inc. for two years. He then enlisted with the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II on an LST. Although he never spoke much about the war, he did share the time he was at the helm of his LST for 24 hours during a typhoon when all others were in the sick bay. Remarkably, during the intensity of the storm, Nubs found a way to navigate everyone to safety. After he served in the U.S. Navy, he returned to Manitowoc, where he married his high school sweetheart, Marion Maresh, at the former Holy Innocents Catholic Church on July 20, 1946, by the Rev. E.A. Radey. Marion preceded Nubs in death on Jan. 19, 2007. Nubs continued his employment at The Manitowoc Company for 45 years. At the time of his retirement at Bay Shipbuilding Corporation in Sturgeon Bay, he was the dry-dock boss, carpenter foreman, and launching master. He always spoke highly and with great respect about how John and Ruth West treated him and his family. Nubs passionately enjoyed golf for many years and was lucky enough to strike three hole-in-one shots. He was elated and honored to personally meet his hero, Arnold Palmer, and treasured it when Mr. Palmer sent him a congratulatory autographed photo and letter upon his retirement. Nubs had great pride in being a Catholic and living his faith. He attended daily Mass no matter the weather and also prayed the rosary daily. Nubs enjoyed spending his retirement years making wood art and generously donated his quality workmanship away. He was very proud of his Polish heritage including the polka Mass and also enjoyed his Polish food and beverages. Nubs' lifelong priorities were always God and family.  (Survivors omitted for privacy.) Nubs was preceded in death by his wife: Marion; his parents; one brother: Richard; one sister: Eleanor; two sisters-in-law: Antoinette (J.O.) Place and Loie Maresh; three brothers-in-law: Doug Prahl; Ozzie Wilda; and Joe Sepnafski.  The family will greet relatives and friends on Friday, Oct. 19, 2007, at St. Francis of Assisi-Waldo Blvd. Site from 9:30 a.m. until the beginning of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. The Mass will be concelebrated by the Revs. Thomas Wojciechowski and Gerald Foley, with entombment to follow at Calvary Mausoleum, Manitowoc.  The Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home and Crematory, North 11th and St. Clair streets, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.  Dad, you are now reunited with mom, and we know how much you missed her these last nine months. God bless you, we are very proud of you and love you so very much.  Please, NO flowers. Dad always lived a simple, no frills life and always helped others in his own quiet way. Memorials can be made to the donor's choice since dad always had a passion to help mankind and animals.  Herald Times Reporter, Oct. 17, 2007

Manitowoc Herald Times, April 25, 1934 P. 2 ******** Death Breaks Up Brother-Act In Soft Ball Sport Death of Leo Hablewitz, 26, Tuesday night, broke up a brother combination which had played an important part in Manitowoc diamond ball activities for a number of years. The three Hablewitz brothers, Leo, catcher, Edward, pitcher, and Sylvester, first baseman, worked together smoothly and formed the nucleus for strong teams in the National league. In 1932 they were with the Brewer Furniture team which won the championship and last season they were with the Hook Emporium team which won second place. Although occupying positions on the team where hairline decisions must be made, the boys never gave the umpires any trouble. Leo’s untimely death put an end to plans that had already been made for this season. The brothers, in addition to their soft ball activities, planned to play hardball with the Omsan club. Eddie and “Sally” will probably carry on—Leo would want it that way--but for those two boys, the game will never be quite the same. Manitowoc Herald Times, April 26, 1934 P. 15
