JAMES B. HALLADA (d. 1947) James Hallada (photo is on page 1), 5, is Drowned in Manitowoc River Return to a forbidden playground resulted in death for four (sic)-year-old James Bennett Hallada when he fell into the Manitowoc river from the bank at the foot of North Ninth street, in the rear of the Boston store, late Saturday afternoon. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Hallada of 306 Buffalo street. It was the first drowning of the year in the Manitowoc area. Despite previous warnings by his parents, James and Billy Meder, 5, went to the waterfront to play shortly before 5:45 p.m. While playing the Hallada lad toppled into the water. Billy ran home and on the way was met by Mrs. Hallada who asked, “Where’s Jimmy?” “Down by the river,” the boy replied. With Billy in tow, Mrs. Hallada rushed back to the river’s edge where the youngster pointed to a spot in the stream where he said Johnny had disappeared. Light Area of Dragging Police and fire departments were notified and dragging operations commenced immediately. Hundreds of persons lined the rails of the Eighth and Tenth Street bridges and the decks between. When darkness set in, a fire truck with four flood lights aided in operation. The body was hooked shortly before 9 o’clock by Lt. James Danielson of the fire department and Patrolman Chester Saduske of the police department. It was about 15 feet from the spot where the boy fell in. The body was taken to the Mittnacht-Kollath funeral home. Coroner Theodore Teitgen who was called said there would be no inquest. Dr. Teitgen said the Hallada lad had been playing near the river earlier in the afternoon when he was reprimanded by his parents and warned to stay away from the water. Later, however, both boys returned to their former play spot and the tragedy resulted. Drag Over Two Hours Police received the emergency call from the Western Garage at 212 North Ninth street where the mother sought help after questioning Billy. Patrolmen Melvin Bernhardt, Daniel Langenkamp, Chester Saduske, and Sgt. William McConnell were assigned. Along with members of the fire and sheriff’s departments, they dragged the river for over two hours before recovering the body. Boats used were the city rescue towboat, the county rescue craft from the sheriff’s department and other. G. Sterling Rand of 861 North 13th appeared on the scene with his new boat and volunteered the use for the police department. Mrs. Hallada told police the two lads had been playing at the same spot near the river about 2:30 p.m. They were found by the Halladas who took their son home and punished him. After eating supper, about 4:45 p.m., Jim went out to play again according to Mrs. Hallada. At about 6 p.m. she went looking for him in the vicinity of Seventh and Buffalo Streets. When she was unable to locate the boys, she walked to the river, near the south end of North Ninth street, where she met Billy Meder who lives at 208 North Eighth street. Funeral Tuesday Billy told Mrs. Hallada that Jimmy was standing on the butt end of a log near the edge of the river. When he reached over in an attempt to pick up a brick, he lost his balance and fell into the river, the boy related. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Mittnacht-Kollath funeral home and at 2:30 at the Sacred Heart Catholic church, the Rev. I. M. Schorn officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. Jimmy was born Sept. 3, 1942, in Two Rivers. His family moved to the present address in April, 1946. He is survived by his parents, Bernard Hallada and the former Marie Brault. The boy may be viewed from Monday noon until time of services Manitowoc Herald Times, Monday, June 30, 1947 P.2

MARY HALLADA Death of Mary Halaba(sic), almost 12 years old, in an accident day before yesterday about 1:30 in the afternoon. She was the daughter of the fireman at Rahr's Sons Brewery by the name of Wenzel Halaba. She tried to jump onto the Main St. bridge just as it was revolving. She tried to hang onto the iron handrails but was thrown into the water. Her death must have been caused from bruising and internal injuries following which she spent an hour in the water before anyone found her body. Her burial took place this morning at 9am at the Catholic Cemetery. Der Nord Westen, 22 July 1886 ******** DROWNED. Tuesday afternoon a girl named Mary Halada (sic), aged about 12 years, was drowned at Main street bridge. The children have a habit of rushing for the bridge when the bell rings, so as to get on the draw. It is believed she was caught between the inner rail of the moving bridge and the outer rail of the approach, as the bridge tender says he felt some obstruction while swinging the bridge. When the bridge had swung clear of the approach she dropped into the river. The tug Arctic was near at the time and John Toomey leaped into the water but was unable to find the child. A large crowd collected and the river was dragged for about an hour. Ed. Lamere went to the bottom a number of times but could not find the body. It was finally brought up by means of a pike pole and was taken to the home of the distracted parents. The only wonder is that more children are not drowned in this way. Almost every day on Eighth street bridge, there are narrow escapes. The children come trooping when the bell rings and in their haste run against the moving rail. ALBERT HANDL DEATH COMES TO ALBERT HANDL AT THE SUPPER TABLE WELL KNOWN RESIDENT SUCCUMBS TO ATTACK OF HEART FAILURE AT MEAL AT THE NORTH HOUSE LAST NIGHT. AGED 55 Death came to Albert Handl, a well known resident of the city, while he was seated at the table at the North House, where he had stopped for the evening meal last night. Heart failure was the cause of death. Mr. Handl was seated at the table with several others in the dining room at the hotel and had just started his meal when it was noted that he appeared to be in distress, his head dropping and his arms falling to his side. Others, seated near him, spoke to the man but received no response and hurrying to his side, found that he was dead. Physicians reported death due to heart failure. Although Mr. Handl had complained for some time of illness, he was about as usual yesterday and when he visited the hotel appeared in his usual health and spirits. He accepted an invitation to remain for the evening meal and had been in the dining room only a few minutes when stricken. Mr. Handl was born in Germany on May 8, 1860 and was 55 years of age at his death. He was a carpenter by trade and had made his home here for years, residing at 944/911? So. Thirteenth street. Besides a wife he is survived by three sons and five daughters. The funeral will be held Friday at 10 o’clock and interment will be at Calvary cemetery. People on the street saw Mr. Handel fall and when they reached his side, found him dying. In falling Mr. Handel sustained a deep cut in the head but death is said by physicians to have been due to heart failure and not to any injury in the fall. Mr. Handel was taken into the Trutchell place in front of which he was stricken, and later the body was removed to the family home at Nineteenth and Washington streets. For twenty years or more Mr. Handel had been employed as a janitor in public school buildings of the city, having formerly been in charge of the Third ward building and later the Seventh ward school. JAMES HANDL Patrolman Finds Youth’s Body in Water Near Pier Handl Boy Identified Through Class Ring; Find Prince’s Shirt The body of James Handl, 17, was taken from the water along the south pier of the sewage disposal plant at 11:16 a.m. today, almost one week to the hour when he and Arthur Prince, 18, were drowned after their duck-skiff capsized on Lake Michigan about three-quarters of a mile off the shore of Silver Creek Park. Identification was established through a class ring which bore the inscription “J.A.H.” Funeral arrangements will be held at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Pfeffer’s funeral home and 9 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic church, the Rev. Alfred Pritzl officiating. Burial will be at the Calvary cemetery. Underwear Found Princes’s body has not yet been recovered but police and coastguard were searching adjacent waters this afternoon. The body of the younger youth was sighted and removed from the water by Patrolman Emil Schultz, just a little over an hour after a pair of underwear shorts was found on the revetment wall of the pumping station at the Manitowoc light plant at the foot of Columbus street by a plant employe, according to police. The shorts have not et been identified. Shirts in Same Spot Discovery of the shorts followed recovery of a heavy wool, red and black check outer shirt worn by Prince at the time of the fatal hunting accident. The shirt was found partially buried in the sand of the beach by Henry Prince of 1808 Western avenue, the drowned boy’s father as he walked the shore late yesterday afternoon, police said. The spot where it was found was only a few feet from where a blue plaid sport shirt, also worn by Prince, was discovered about 200 feet south of the sewage plant yesterday morning, according to police, who theorized that the youth, who was a good swimmer, may have removed the clothing to help keep himself afloat. Manitowoc Herald Times, November 20, 1946 ******** Drag Lake To Recover Bodies of Two Youths Other Buddy Directs Search Merlin Foreman is Out of Danger at Hospital Coast guard crews from Two Rivers and Kewaunee continued dragging operations off Silver Creek park today in an effort to recover the bodies of James Handl, 17, and Arthur Prince, 18, Lincoln high school seniors, who drowned late Wednesday afternoon when their hunting skiff filled with water. The third occupant of the tiny craft, Merlin Foreman, 18, of 521 South 26th street, remained a patient at the Holy Family hospital, where he was taken after being brought ashore by Sgt. Geoge Tulach and Office Frank Orechekowski, in the police boat. He is out of danger. Standing on the shore of the lake this morning, directing the coast guard crews in their dragging operations was William Hofslund, 15, of 836 South 18th street, high school sophomore, who may have escaped the fate of Prince and Handl because he did not have a hunting license. He remained on the shore when the three others put off in their tiny craft in an effort to bag some ducks seen flying over the lake. Use Planes in Search This morning Police Chief J.J. Kuplic contacted the airport and Manager Dean Critek arranged to send up two planes which circled the area around Silver Creek park for an hour. The fliers reported that there were many rocks protruding from the lake bottom which made it difficult to discern if either of the two bodies might be there. Coast guardsmen also reported that the jagged rocks broke off the hooks of their grappling lines many times during operations yesterday and today. Relates “experiences” No trace of the boat was found today. The Two Rivers coast guard crew started dragging operations yesterday afternoon but was forced to quit when darkness set in at 5 o’clock. Joined by the Kewaunee crew, they were back at daybreak today. From his bed in the hospital this morning, Foreman, appearing and feeling much improved over his “shakes” of yesterday when he was unable to control his violent shivering, related the details of the tragedy as far as he could remember. Prince, Handl and himself pushed off from the southside shore early yesterday afternoon in a duck skiff, foreman said. After waiting a time, some ducks approached which they shot at and missed. Shortly afterwards, they noticed the boat was beginning to ship water. Boat Fills, Turns Over “We had got out beyond the protection of the bulb and a strong west wind was whipping up the water. He continued. “Then when we saw the skiff was taking in water we started for shore, but didn’t seem to be able to make much headway against the wind. I guess we started to drift backwards and we began shouting to Hofslund (Lincoln high school sophomore William Hofslund) who was standing on shore.” “Finally the skiff was completely under the surface of the water and it turned over.” Foreman related. “We grabbed onto the overturned boat and hung on, Prince and Handl toward the back and I on the front end. Then Prince pushed off to swim to shore but after going a short distance, he came back.” “We had two life preservers in the skiff and Prince and Handl each used one. They managed to get one arm into them but that was all,” he said. “Finally, Handl started losing his grip and slipping off the rear end of the boat.” He continued. “Prince and I pulled him back a couple times. The cold water was numbing to our hands.” Prince a Good Swimmer “The last I remember was the three of us still hanging onto the side of the skiff,” he recounted. “I don’t remember anyone going under except Handl and we pulled him up again. I don’t remember seeing the police or being rescued.” At the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Prince at 1808 Western Avenue, Arthur’s parents, grieved and shocked, couldn’t quite understand how their boy could have drowned. “He was a good swimmer,” Mrs. Prince said. “He earned three cards for junior life-saving at Lincoln high school. Perhaps in trying to help one of the other boys he became weakened and went under,” she suggested. Mr. Prince told of how his son had run out of the house, forgetting his life preserver in his haste to get started when Foreman called for him. “Arthur had placed the preserver on the kitchen table while he was getting ready to leave,” he recalled. "When Merlin, his best friend came, he rushed out and left the preserver there on the table.” Enjoyed Hunting, Fishing “He was always that way about hunting,” Arthur’s father said. “He was interested in many sports but his hobby was hunting and fishing. He was a big boy, (Continued on Page 23, Col. 5) DRAG LAKE TO RECOVER BODIES (Continued from page one) five feet eleven inches tall and weighed about 155 pounds and had always been well able to take care of himself. Other boys sort of looked up to him too,” he recalled proudly, with tears in his eyes. Arthur was born in 1928 and was a senior at Lincoln high school. He graduated from St. Paul’s parochial school. Immediate survivors include his parents, three sisters, Dolores, Lorraine and Bernice and a brother, Harold. With Andre Handl of 931 South 23rd street, James’ father, just back from the lakeshore where dragging operations were under way this morning, he and his wife and their daughters, Doris and Barbara were still barely able to comprehend the tragedy that had overtaken their son and brother. “It’s very hard to believe that this has happened to our only son,” Mrs. Handl said, tears welling to her eyes. “When he left us he said they were going to Shoto and told us not to worry about anything.” First Hunting Trip “This was his first hunting trip with his own gun,” she recalled. “It was only one of the first few times he had been out with the other two boys whom he met two weeks ago while the three were working as pin-spotters at the Elks club bowling alleys.” “He was a great sportsman,” she said. “He was crazy about hunting and fishing. It was his ambition to become a forest ranger after graduating from high school where he was a senior.” James, who delivered papers for the Herald-Times on a South Ninth street route for three years, graduated from St. Boniface school. He was born in 1929. “He wanted his 12-year-old substitute to take over his paper route when he gave it up at the end of school next June,” Mrs. Handl recalled. “We would like it if the route could go to this boy now.” Prince and Foreman were also former carrier boys for the Herald-Times. Hofslund Talks Hofslund last night gave his version of the drowning to Frank Tomcheck, captain of detectives. He said the four boys had fashioned some home made duck decoys on Tuesday, planning on a hunting trip yesterday afternoon, when the high school was closed ahead of the night school sessions later. Shortly before 1 o’clock, he said, Handl, Prince, and Foremen picked him up in a car with the duck boat strapped to the top. They had three shotguns, a pair of binoculars and two life preservers. They drove to Silver Creek park and carried the boat to the lake shore near the bathhouse. Noticing some ducks flying over Handl, Prince and Foreman decided to go out. Hofslund said he had no hunting license and remained ashore. When the boat was about a half mile off shore, Hofslund told Captain Tomchek, he saw a puff of smoke and heard a shot. He noticed the water getting rougher and said the trio turned the boat around and seemed headed for shore. Suddenly, he said, the boat settled and he noticed all three boys in the water. Taking off his shoes, Hofslund waded out into the lake up to his neck. Finds Only a Shell Box Noticing his lower legs becoming numb, Hofslund said he returned to shore, donned his shoes, and ran up the bank to spread the alarm. When the call came to the station Police Chief J. J. Kuplic went to Silver Creek park and noticing the plight of the boys, drove back to the city in search of a power boat. He secured the McMullen and Pitz motor boat to make the run to the scene but when it reached there, Foreman was ashore and there was no sign of the two other boys. All that was found was an old shell box, floating in the water. It had been used by one of the boys to sit on while the other two paddled the craft while kneeling in the boat. Responding to the ambulance call were Officers Milton Larson and Melvin Reinhart and also Jerome Sadusky. Also on the shore to assist when Officer Tulach and Orchekowski brought in Foreman was Officer Elmer Ross. The latter was out today with the Two Rivers coast guard crew. WALTER HANDL (d. 1906) BOLT STRIKES GRAND STAND; 5 KILLED Terrible Catastrophe at West Side Ball Park Sunday Afternoon When Lightning Strikes Stand 5 KILLED OUTRIGHT; 4 SERIOUSLY INJURED; SCORES STUNNED By far The most serious fatality that has yet visited Manitowoc occurred Sunday, afternoon at the old west side ball park, 16th and Wollmer streets, when, during, the thunder storm that raged, a bolt of lightning struck the south east corner of the grand stand, came down the post at the entrance and killed outright five young men and boys besides injuring a dozen others. It was at 1:30 when the fatal stroke occurred and but for the fact that there were comparatively few on the grounds and less than a dozen in the grand stand or in close proximity to it, the death list would have been much larger. The five who lost their lives were Albert Skuhra, Walter Handl, Irving Woellert, Willie Knuzen, and Tony Klauck. Such excitement as followed the shock has never been seen in Manitowoc. A half dozen doctors, summoned from as many telephones, hurried to the grounds in autos and carriages, through the pouring rain, and the scene as the bodies of the unfortunates were laid out on the grass near the grand stand and efforts made to resuscitate them was heart rending in the extreme. Parents, brothers and sisters of the unfortunates crowded around the loved ones, almost hysterical and it was with difficulty that the doctors were able to work over those in which there was some hope of reviving. Walter and Frank Boehm, Harvey Kono and Theo. Burmeister were among the lads that were the most seriously injured and were revived. A score of others, standing in front of the stand, when the bolt struck, were knocked to the ground, some unconscious, but were soon brought around. There were less than 100 on the grounds when the bolt struck. The Plymouth team, who were scheduled to play the Schreihardt’s at 2:30 in the afternoon, was out in the field practicing although it was commencing to rain. Some of the Schreihart players were just coming into the ground. The five who lost their lives were grouped around the entrance of the grand stand. Suddenly, without warning, there was a bolt of lightning; that struck the roof of the stand, tore its way for three feet down the slanting side, and then went down the corner post, into the ground. It was all done so quickly that no one can explain just what occurred for the next few moments. Skura, was standing against the post with two others, and all toppled over, dead. Two other lads were just outside on the steps leaning into the stand, and they toppled over with a sign of an outcry. The others that were stunned cried out for help and doctors. A half frightened lad, seeing every one falling in and about the grand stand, rushed out of the grounds and ran to the residence of Editor Mackey of the Herald, that adjoins the ball grounds on the south. He at once telephoned for Dr. Patchen, who came to the scene through the driving rain in his automobile. Frantic women in the neighborhood rushed into the park and added much to the excitement. The wife of Albert Skura, arrived on the scene and became hysterical. Closely following Dr. Patchen came Doctors Gleason; Meany, Luman and Thurtell, all of whom had been summoned by telephone from nearby residences. The news of the terrible accident at the west side park spread like wild fire through the city and soon, all avenues to the grounds, despite the fact that there was a down pour of rain at the time, were thronged with an anxious mob of people, some of them parents of the dead, who were not aware that their sons had met death until arriving at the park. Doctor Patchen superintended the work of trying to bring as many as there was any hope for to. A hasty examination showed that Skura, Handl, Woellert had been killed by the first shock. Young Knuttzen was thought to show some signs of life and he was carried to a residence just across the street from the ballpark exit but it was soon seen that he was past recovery. Little Tony Klauck, who was a son of a widow living at the corner of York and Seventh streets, showed more signs of life than any of the others. Dr. John Hoyer, who was present worked over the lad for half an hour. At one time, he opened his eyes and seemed to take notice of what was going on around him but he soon fell off again and was past recall. Walter and John Boehm, young lads who were stunned by the bolt were taken to their home on 20th street and after much hard work were brought around all right. Harvey Kono and Theo. Burmeister two other lads were believed for a time to be fatally hurt but after doctors had worked over them for some time, they were revived and taken to their homes in carriages. A number of others were knocked down by the bolt but were able to proceed to their homes on foot with the assistance of relatives and friends. Scenes about the grounds while the patrol wagon was busy taking the dead away beggar description. For a long time the identity of the youngest of the five dead, Klauck, was unknown but finally a brother of the lad arrived at the park, not knowing that his brother was there, and on looking at the dead form, lying on the seats in the grand stand, said it was his brother. The patrol in charge of the officers Carle, Dueno and Trochelli, came to the grounds and removed the body of Walter Handl, to his home on S.13th Street and returning conveyed Irving Woellert to the home on 20th street. A third trip was taken and young Klauck removed and in the meantime the undertaking wagon of Urbanck & Wattawa removed the remains of Albert Skura. The Patrol made one more trip and removed the Knutzen boy. By this time, a crowd of over 1,000 people had gathered at the park. All thoughts of playing the game between the Schreiharts and Plymouth were abandoned early in the afternoon. It was indeed fortunate that the bolt came when it did and not one hour later when there might have been a larger number in the grand stand and the death list correspondingly larger. With the removal of the body of Albert Skura, the crowds filed mournfully out of the grounds. Albert Skura, the oldest of the quintate that lost their lives was about 32 years old, and married being survived by a wife and child. He was prominent in union circles of the city, being a member of the Manitowoc Central Labor Council, deputy organizer of the State Federation, and a member of the Longshoremen’s union. The unions meet this evening to make arrangements for his funeral. He had been hired to sell tickets at the grand stand for yesterday’s game, this being the first time he had, ever officiated. His death was instantaneous, he leaning against the post and receiving the full shock of the bolt. Walter Handl was 17 years old, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Handl, residing on S. 13th street and has been employed for the past three years in a north side meat market. He will probably be buried Tuesday. Irving Woellert was the son of Chas. Woellert, tailor, and was 20 years of age. He will be buried Tuesday. Willie Knutzen, was 13 years of age and resides with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C. Knutzen on N. 15th street. He was a carrier on the Daily Herald. He will be buried Tuesday afternoon. Tony Klauck was 13 years of age and resided at Seventh and York streets. He will be probably be(sic) buried Wednesday and the body taken to Kiel for interment. All the injured are getting along nicely. It was reported last night that Theo. Burmeister, also had died but this report proved to be untrue. Walter and Frank Boehm and Harvey Kono are all recovering from the effects of the shock to their nervous system. It was an accident that will not soon be forgotten and its occurrence on the first day of the week will serve as topic for lesson by the pastors of the city in their talks. JANET B. HAVEL Janet B. Havel, age 76 a lifelong Manitowoc resident went home to be with her Savior on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 surrounded by her loving family.  Janet was born on September 14, 1937 in Manitowoc, daughter of the late Irene (Chapleski) and Herbert Pingle. Janet was a graduate of Lincoln High School. On July 6, 1957 she married the love of her life Emil Havel at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Emil preceded her in death on June 19, 1997. Janet was a loving mother and homemaker. She enjoyed cheering for the Green Bay Packers and any sport her only grandson Justin played, who she cherished dearly. Janet enjoyed the spring and could never wait to get her tomato plants with her now deceased son Ed. After Emil passed away her son Paul took great care of her until his death in February of this year. At which time her son John took care of her until the very end. John made sure Janet would spend her last hours at home where she really wanted to be. She loved her trips to Green Street Restaurant with her son John.  She had four boys but considered her only daughter-in-law Mary her very own daughter. Janet also had one very best friend Connie; together they shared many good times and many nights at Green Street. All though Janet has 5 grandchildren; Rachel was there to take extraordinary care of her in her very last minutes. Janet waited to go home to God until she was in her own home; and of course to give her dog Sadie one last kiss. Without John's dedication, Janet would not have been able to accomplish these things. She was the most loving, friendliest person anyone knew. You could not help but love Janet.  Janet is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law: John Havel, Scott Havel and special friend: Chris Blatz, and Mary Havel all of Manitowoc; five grandchildren: Rachel (Adam), Hailey, Kristi, Justin and Shayla; five great grandchildren; a brother: Richie Deering; and a sister-in-law: Jackie Deering. Online obituary. ******** Zachary Hayes, O.F.M., one of the most renowned American scholars of the theology of St. Bonaventure in the twentieth century, passed into eternal life on Sunday, March 16, 2014. He was 81 years old. Born in Chicago, Illinois on September 21, 1932, the son of Robert and Elizabeth Hayes, Gerald was raised in one of its suburbs, Midlothian, and was a member of St. Christopher’s parish, served at that time by Friars Minor of the Province of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (St. Louis, MO). Entering this province’s minor seminary of St. Joseph in Westmont, Illinois in 1946, he entered the Franciscan order for years later as a novice in Teutopolis, Illinois on July 4, 1952, given the name Zachary and making simple profession on July 5, 1953. He then spent three years (1953-56) in college study at Our Lady of Angels Seminary in Cleveland, Ohio (affiliated with Quincy College in Quincy, Illinois), majoring in philosophy. In 1956, he began his theological studies at St. Joseph Seminary in Teutopolis, being ordained at the conclusion of his third year on June 24, 1959. Simultaneously, during these summers (1955-60), he studied music at De Paul University in Chicago; organ was his major instrument. Close to completing his studies in music, he was sent overseas to serve as Catholic chaplain and pastor at the US Embassy in Bonn-Bad Godesberg in West Germany. While there, he began a doctoral program in theology in the Faculty of Catholic Theology at Friedrich Wilhelm University in Bonn. He completed these studies in November 1963; his thesis, written under Johann Auer, was titled The General Doctrine of Creation in the Thirteenth Century, with Special Emphasis on Matthew of Aquasparta. Taking additional courses, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Theology on July 9, 1964. During these years, he also had taken several courses from Fr. Joseph Ratzinger, whose Habilitationsschrift (1959) on the theology of history in St. Bonaventure he would translate into English some years later (Chicago: Franciscan Herald Press, 1971). Returning to the States, Zachary Hayes began an illustrious career as a professor of systematic theology at St. Joseph Seminary in Teutopolis in the autumn of 1964. Four year later, in the Fall of 1968, he was integral to the moving of the seminary program to the south side of Chicago, in the neighborhood of Hyde Park, and the establishment of a school of theology, Catholic Theological Union: an innovative, post-Vatican venture in theological education established in collaboration with three other religious orders. Quickly attracting other congregations to the venture, the school became nationally well known for the excellence of its curriculum and faculty for training men for priesthood as well as an important center for the theological and ministerial education of the laity, with a particularly strong emphasis on preparation for mission. The school exemplified Fr. Hayes’ scholarly hermeneutic: for theology to be helpful to the Church, it must be actively engaged in a conversation with contemporary cultures. Zachary Hayes was a distinguished educator. Thanks to the influence of several Franciscan scholar-educators (notably, Philotheus Boehner and Matthew Menges), he had been firmly grounded in the contributions of the medieval Franciscan School, especially Bonaventure of Bagnoregio, even prior to his arrival in Bonn; these masters would provide him with the basis for an alternative (Franciscan) approach to the classic topics of Christian theology. Consequently, he developed and taught a variety courses covering subjects such as revelation, Trinity, creation and cosmology, Christology and eschatology. In his later years, he also became keenly interested in the relationship between religion and the sciences. He was a member of the Chicago Center for Religion and Science. During these same years, he was invited to teach at numerous other universities and institutes: Catholic as well as non-Catholic. Of particular note were the summer courses he taught in the M.A. program in Sacred Science (1966-1990) sponsored by the Franciscans at St. Bonaventure University. Simultaneous to his classroom teaching, ongoing research and writing, Fr. Hayes also made significant contributions as a formation director for the friars of his own province studying for ministry at CTU in Chicago. He was a member of numerous boards and academic societies, eagerly sought after for his intellectual acumen and understanding of the dynamics of teaching and learning – a subject on which he has also written. In addition to his service as educator in the classroom, Zachary Hayes was also a prolific writer – in both scholarly and popular formats - as well as a translator. He contributed approximately 90 scholarly articles or encyclopedic entries and 60 critical book reviews. From his list of 17 published volumes, his most significant works flowed directly from the subjects he treated with his students in the classroom: creation theology, eschatology, cosmology but especially Christology. Perhaps his single most important work was his magisterial monograph The Hidden Center: Spirituality and Speculative Christology in St. Bonaventure (1981), reedited on several occasions. As dialogue with classic texts were important values for him, he also served as a well-regarded translator for the works of several important contemporary theologians (e.g., Joseph Ratzinger and Karl Lehmann); but perhaps his greatest legacy in this genre will be a series of English translations of various selected sermons and mystical writings by the Seraphic Doctor as well as a corpus of six of his most seminal theological works (viz., on the Trinity, the Knowledge of Christ, the Ten Commandments, the Gifts of the Spirit, the Reduction of the Arts to Theology and the Itinerarium) for Franciscan Institute Publications. In 1974, Zachary Hayes was promoted to the rank of full professor. In 1997, he was honored with a festschrift of scholarly essays celebrating his 65th birthday and 30 years of exemplary teaching, titled That Others May Know and Love: Essays in Honor of Zachary Hayes OFM. Franciscan, Educator, Scholar. Among the numerous awards, commendations and honorary degrees he received, his reception of the John Courtenay Murray Award for Distinguished Achievement by the Catholic Theological Society of America in 1985 and the Franciscan Institute Medal in 2002 were signal honors. He continued teaching at CTU, until ill health necessitated his retirement in 2005. He was transferred to the Franciscan community in Sherman, Illinois where he lived in retirement, continuing his work of translation, until the community was moved to Manitowoc, Wisconsin in 2012. His remains rest in Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
