HELEN HODGE Woman Dies of Suffocation Burning Roast Leads to Death MANITOWOC—Mrs. David Hodge, 55, of 815 Green St., died early Sunday afternoon of suffocation when a beef roast she was preparing caught fire and filled her home with smoke. Mrs. Hodge was pronounced dead on arrival at Holy Family Hospital shortly after 1:45 p.m. where she was removed in the ambulance of the Manitowoc Police dept. Dr. Theodore Teitgen, Manitowoc County coroner, said death was due to suffocation through smoke inhalation. Mrs. Hodge was discovered by her husband who returned for the noon meal. He told officers Harry Kasten and Walter Dueno, who responded to his call, that he had left home after 10:30 and that he and his wife had agreed on a 1:30 meal time. When he entered the home he found Mrs. Hodge in a small room near the kitchen. She had a burn blister on her left hand. The officers, who inhaled considerable smoke before removing Mrs. Hodge, said the roast had been reduced to a crisp and bone. Authorities said she may have put the roast in the stove and gone back to sleep. KENWOOD HOLFELTZ BOY DROWNS AT BEACH HERE Holfetz Youth Is First Victim Of This Season Boy Falls Out of Improvised Boat; Efforts To Revive Fail The first drowning of the summer occurred this morning when Kenwood Holfeltz, aged 8, paddling about in the lake south of the city utility plant in an improvised boat made from an old mortar tub, became frightened, jumped into the water and struck his head on the tub. The body floated and was recovered a short time after the accident but respiration methods failed. Although Holfeltz had some companions on the shore he was out alone in the mortar tub and the boys ran and notified Pete Schmidt, who operates a welding shop nearby. The latter after some search located a row boat, brought the body of the Holfeltz boy to shore. Respiration equipment was hurried to the lake shore by the truck of the fire department. A call also went to Two Rivers where an inhalator and first aid equipment of Wisconsin Public Service corporation were brought here. Saw Some Hope Robert Lindwall, of the physical education department of the high school and swimming coach, and Melvin Reinhardt, south side beach life guard together with Dr. George Hoffman, city health officer, worked over the boy’s body for nearly two hours but he was past aid. Since hope was retained, due to the return of blood to the ear lobes and arms, which spurred those working over the boy to renewed efforts. But finally there were no signs of life and the efforts were abandoned. The body was removed to the Pfeffer parlors. Dr. Gerald Rau, county coroner, announced that there would be no inquest. Word of the drowning of the southside boy spread quickly about the city, following the trip through the downtown streets of the north side hook and ladder truck with the pulmotor. Large crowds gathered along the beach where workers were active over the body of young Holfeltz. The police were forced to rope off an area to keep the crowds back while the workers were administering to the boy. Parents Arrive The boy’s father, John Holfeltz, South 11th street, arrived at the scene soon after the body was recovered and assisted in trying to revive his son. The mother also appeared and she became so hysterical that the police had to hold her beyond the ropes to prevent her interfering with the men working over the boy. The Two Rivers equipment was in charge of Edward Danner and E. P. Orlabeck, of the Wisconsin Public Service corporation. The lake was calm shortly after 9 a.m. today when young Holfeltz set out in the mortar tub for a paddle on the lake. The west wind slowly moved the tub and Holfeltz out from shore. The small boys and young men along the beach said that they first noticed Holfeltz making frantic efforts to get the tub back to shore. Then they saw him jump from the tub into the water. The parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Holfeltz, reside at 1213 South 11th street. There is one sister, 5, and a brother, 7 (names omitted for privacy). No funeral arrangements have been made. IGNATZ HOLMAN IGNATZ HOLMAN, AGE 76, SUICIDES AT HOME HERE Lifeless Body of Pioneer of City Is Found By Wife Who Is Now Seriously Ill From Shock Temporary insanity was blamed today for the suicide of Ignatz Holman, 76, whose lifeless body was found hanging from a ladder in a chicken coop in the rear of the home at 1416 South Tenth street by his aged widow at 10:30 o’clock this morning. Police and the coroner were immediately summoned but life had been extinct for some time. His aged widow, Mrs. Antonia Holman, 80, is in critical condition from the shock and from nervousness which has bothered her for many years. She is under the care of relatives and could not be interviewed today. District Attorney L. F. Fischer, when notified of the death by a representative of the Herald-News, stated that the case was apparently one of suicide and that no inquest would be ordered unless additional facts were brought to light. Favorably Known Mr. Holman was known about the city as one of the courteous gentlemen of the old school and had lived a retired life for some time following many years spent as a mason in Manitowoc. Friends who observed him the past several days could ascribe no motive for his act, Mr. Holman being cheerful at all times and it was presumed that he must have become temporarily insane before committing his rash act. He used a one-quarter inch rope to hang himself and had he desired to save himself from the consequences could have done so as his feet were only a short distance from the ground and also a short distance from the slanting ladder on which he had fastened the rope. Found By Wife Authorities were informed of the death of Mr. Holman by neighbors who were attracted to the scene by the screams of Mrs. Holman after the discovery of the lifeless body of her husband to whom she was wedded many years ago. The couple came from Germany and settled in Manitowoc forty-five years ago, making their home in this city continuously since that time. They have no children and the only immediate relative in Manitowoc is a niece who is now taking care of the widow. Funeral on Monday Funeral services will be held from the Pfeffer chapel, Washington Street at 9 o’clock and from the St. Boniface church with interment taking place at Evergreen. The body is now at the Pfeffer chapel to which it was removed following the arrival of authorities. Manitowoc Herald News, June 7, 1929 P. 2

PAUL J. HOLSCHBACH (d. 2007) Paul J. Holschbach, age 85, a De Pere resident, died on Tuesday, July 31, 2007. The son of the late Paul T. and Clara (Dirkmann) Holschbach was born on Nov. 23, 1921, in Manitowoc, where he lived until 1969, and has lived in either Green Bay or De Pere ever since. Paul acquired 14 years of "formal" education but also took many short courses and seminars, including writing and public speaking. He had worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a meat inspector. On June 12, 1970, Mr. Holschbach and the former Rose L. Meyer were married in Green Bay. Mr. Holschbach had many interests and hobbies: he served on the Manitowoc County board from 1949 until 1957 and on the Brown County commission on aging; was a past president of the De Pere park board; and served on the De Pere mayor's advisory committee. He was an avid bird watcher having 330 species on his life list. He was a charter member of the Green Bay Genealogical Society, and traced his family tree back to 1520. Paul spent part of the summer of 1975 doing that research. He enjoyed horse breeding: his favorite named "Index," which he raised and trained, became the Michigan State High-Point Half-Arab (Show Career) in 1966. Paul was a past president of the Gardeners Club of Green Bay and past regional director of the National Men's Club (MGCA). He was a master gardener and an accredited horticulture judge. He also engaged in the fascinating hobby of ginseng hunting. Paul won many awards for photography doing flora and fauna subjects. Some of his honors included having his pictures selected for the front and back covers of the Men's Garden Club of America magazine: "The Gardener," a national publication. Some also were selected for their calendar. Many of Paul's winning scenes were used on his all- occasion greeting cards he produced and merchandised. Paul won the book award of merit from the Wisconsin State Historical Society for his book: "Memoirs of the Little Man." He did much volunteer work: 15 years of delivering meals to the homebound, just to mention one. Paul was born with a condition known as Panhypopituitarism, resulting in his growth being restricted considerably. His first job was with the Manitowoc Ship Building Company as an outside machinist's helper. The "yards" had received a contract from the Navy to build 28 submarines during World War II. Paul stood only 49 inches tall and weighed but 75 pounds at the time. He was facetiously referred to as the "chief getting into small holes man." He was called upon to get into the small and confining spaces of the subs. He did this for almost every trade there employed. None of the other 8,000 men on the crew (of normal sized men) could perform Paul's job. Paul felt that it was his contribution to the war effort. While some of his buddies and classmates were secluding themselves in fox holes on a battleground, Paul was squeezing into and out of his own type of fox hole. In 1964, at the age of 43, Paul underwent endocrinology work at the University Hospitals. After much consternation, it was decided to proceed with the replacement therapy even at such a late and history making date. The synthetic replacement hormones permitted Paul to live a richer, fuller and healthier life, not withstanding some tradeoffs. Ironically, Paul grew considerably later in life, which was not due to any stimulant. He actually grew 14 inches after he reached the age of majority (21). While a resident in Manitowoc, Paul had been a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, and was currently a member of Resurrection Parish in Allouez. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. Friends may call at Resurrection Catholic Church, 333 Hilltop Drive, Allouez, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2007. Visitation will continue on Friday from 9 a.m. until the hour of Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Faith Formation Center, (former St. Boniface Catholic Church), 1110 S. 10th St., Manitowoc. MARTIN F. HOTZ ACCIDENT IS FATAL TO AGED MAN SHOCK PROVES TOO GREAT FOR FRED HOTZ, 81 Injury when Struck by Auto Ten days Ago Ends in Death Injuries and the shock which he suffered in an automobile accident when he was struck by a machine ten days ago at Washington and Fourteenth street proved fatal to Martin Frederick Hotz, pioneer hottler of Manitowoc, aged 81, and death came to him at the hospital early Sunday morning. Mr. Hotz suffered a severe skull injury when struck by a car driven by Frank Kinstrey Wednesday morning September 22 as he was crossing the street and stepped into the path of the automobile, the driver of which was unable to avoid the accident. Funeral on Wednesday Mr. Hotz was on his way to Belinski Bros. market on an errand for his daughter Mrs. Philip Goetz with whom he made his home. He was taken to the hospital where he has been a patient since, his advanced age, 81, being a handicap to the fight he made to live. Death was due to the shock of the accident, coupled with the injury he sustained. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 9 o’clock from the Goetz home, 1416 Washington street, to St. Boniface church, Rev. Kersten officiating. Burial will be at Calvary. Resident Here 56 Years Born in Germany October 14, 1845, Mr. Hotz came to America as a young man and after a year at Milwaukee came to this city and for fifty-six years had made his residence here, having been engaged in the grocery business for years and being a potter. He was married in 1859 to Barbara Neuser who preceded him in death twelve years ago. Mr. Hotz served in the German army in 1866, being a lieutenant in rank. Decedent is survived by three children, Mrs. Philip Goetz of this city and Charles and Fred Hotz Jr., residing at Milwaukee. He was a member of the Catholic Knights and up to the time of his injury was active and a familiar figure in the neighborhood where he made his home. Manitowoc Herald News, October 4, 1926 P. 2 ******** HOTZ DEATH NOT DUE TO INJURY IN ACCIDENT This is Testimony of Physician at Inquest Yesterday That the death of Fred Hotz, aged resident who died at the hospital several days after having been struck by an automobile at Fourteenth and Washington streets, was not due to injuries in the accident but to gangrene developed from trouble from which he had long suffered, was the testimony of Dr. Tergeson before the coroner's jury in the inquest held yesterday. The jury returned a verdict of unavoidable accident and exonerated Frank Kinstrey, driver of the car. More than two and one-half hours was taken by the jury in reaching its verdict after several witnesses had given testimony, including Kinstrey who although he was advised he need not testify, took the stand and told of the accident, the position of the pedestrain(sic) and the car, speed of the machine and other details and answered all questions asked him. Mr. Kinstrey explained his effort to avoid striking Mr. Holz and his failure. Other Witnesses Frank Valet, an employe of the Globe Laundry Co. with which Kinstrey is identified and George Maresch, both of whom were near and witnessed the accident were also witnesses and explained how it had happened, neither giving evidence in the matter. Dr. Tergeson in his testimony said that after the third day Mr. Hotz had shown marked improvement of condition that precluded probablility of the skull injury sustained having been the cause of death and he maintained that the death was due to natural causes growing out of the afffication(sic) from which Hotz suffered and his advanced age. Lawyers Take Notes on Inquest Atty. Walter M. Joyce of the firm of Healy & Joyce, was in attendance at the inquest, taking notes on the testimony and it was reported that relatives of Mr. Hotz had retained the law firm with a view to action if the testimony warranted a claim on the insurance policy carried by Kinstrey's concern.
