ALBERT MROTEK FISHING TRIP FATAL TO LOCAL MAN Local Man Drowned When Boat Capsizes on Lake Albert Mrotek, 28, was drowned and his two companions, George Musil and Daniel Gray rescued when a boat in which the three were passengers capsized at Stockbridge lake at 10 o’clock this morning. Mrotek is said to have sunk from sight and never reappeared. His body had not been recovered late this afternoon. With Gray, who is nineteen and Musil who is thirty-six and a taxi driver Mrotek left for Stockbridge last night about 10:30 and the trio had planned on a day’s fishing trip. They were out a mile in the lake when Mrotek had a strike. It appears to have been a large pike or pickerel and was giving him considerable trouble to land. As he got the captive closer to the boat he leaned over to get the fish and in so doing tipped the rowboat over precipitating the three into the water. Both Gray and Musil were able to swim. Whether Mrotek struck his head on something in the bottom of the lake or was caught in the weeds is not known but he failed to come to the surface after his first plunge. Two Are Rescued The accident was seen by a party of Chicago fishermen who hastened to the spot and assisted in the rescue of Musil and Gray and made an unsuccessful effort to find Mrotek. The rescued men were taken ashore and immediately engaged assistance in the effort to locate Mrotek’s body, an effort that so far has proved unsuccessful. Word of the accident was phoned to Mrotek’s brother Frank in this city and communicated to the aged mother at her home 2211 Washington street and proved a severe shock to her. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mrotek and Mrs. Musil left immediately after the receipt of the message for Stockbridge and will remain until the body is recovered. It will be returned here for burial. Dead Man Native Here Albert Mrotek was born in this city on June 28, twenty-eight years ago and received his education in the local schools. Since leaving school he has been employed in a number of positions as a laborer and had made his home with his mother on Washington street. Besides his mother, Mrs. Mary Mrotek, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Charles Wilda and Miss Mary, the latter at home; Max, Joseph, George, Leo and Frank of this city, Emil of Milwaukee, Edward, whose whereabouts are not known and Walter of Vancouver, Washington. He was not a member of any organizations. Manitowoc Herald News, August 2, 1924 P. 1 ******** FAIL TO GET MROTEK BODY FROM THE LAKE Companions of Dead Man Had a Close Call Also Because of the storm which prevailed on Lake Winnebago at Stockbridge Sunday which made it dangerious to venture onto the lake, two brothers of Albert Mrotek, local man who lost his life while on a fishing trip Saturday, were unable to make efforts to recover the body which is said to have been lost a mile out on the lake. The storm may aid in recovery of Mrotek’s body, it is believed, although the body may not be carried in for weeks. That George Musil and Dan Gray, companions of Mrotek had a close call from meeting the fate of the local man, is indicated by reports of the tragedy from Stockbridge Sunday. Musil and Gray clung to the capsized boat and drifted helplessly about on the lake for nearly an hour before rescued. They were so exhausted they could hardly speak when they reached shore. Musil and Mrotek had strikes on their fishing lines at almost the same moment. Musil landed his fish in the boat and Mrotek was preparing to do the same when he leaned too far over the side of the craft, his foot caught under the edge of the boat and the latter capsized. Mrotek sank immediately, according to his companions, and it is believed that his death was instantaneous. The other two men managed to hold to the sides of the overturned boat until they were rescued by Eli Freeman and Lousi Kershmer, Chicagoans who had been fishing in Stockbridge harbor. When Musil and Gray were lifted into the rescue boat they were so weak from their experience that they could hardly speak. They managed, however, to inform their rescuers that Mrotek had disappeared and they feared he had been drowned. Residents of Stockbridge harbor and others organized dragging crews and began a search for Mrotek’s body at the scene of the drowning. Musil and Gray returned here Saturday night. Manitowoc Herald News, August 4, 1924 P. 2 ******** Up until 2 o’clock this afternoon the body of Albert Mrotek, who was drowned in Lake Winnebago Saturday morning, had not been found although searching parties had worked all day Monday and had again been dragging this morning. The spot where Mrotek lost his life is deep. Little hope was expressed that the search today would prove successful. Manitowoc Herald News, August 5, 1924 P. 7 ******** FISHERMAN FIND BODY OF ALB. MROTEK The body of Albert Mrotek, the Manitowoc man who lost his life is Lake Winnebago, off Stockbridge last Saturday while on a fishing trip was taken from the lake yesterday afternoon by fishermen engaged in fishing on the lake. The body was not in very good condition but was brought here by relatives who were notified of its recovery and taken to the morgue of Frazier and Shimek. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning with brief services at Calvary cemetery. Two companions of Mrotek had a close call when the boat capsized on the lake. BEN MROTEK (d. 1931) FATAL ACCIDENT AT UTILITY PLANT Ben Mrotek, an assistant firemman at the city utilities plant, was badly scalded and injured by inhaling steam at the plant Sunday evening. He is in a precarious condition at this writing at the hospital. Mrotek was passing through the fan room to inspect the oilers when a T blew and he was enveloped in live steam. He did not appear to be seriously injured and was able to walk out to the ambulance but at the hospital it was seen soon that he had internal injuries and he began to sink. This is the first serious personal injury at the plant since the city took over the first public utility almost twenty years ago. The accident at the plant plunged the city into darkness about 10 pm and hit the theaters hard, as they had to dismiss their audiences after vainly waiting for light for a half hour or so. The lights were out for two hours. Physicians said shortly after the accident that Mr. Mrotek had breathed so much live steam that death was a question of only a few hours. His lungs were badly scalded. He was conscious up to almost the end and sank into death about 4 o'clock Monday afternoon. A brother, Andrew, twenty years ago and one day before this accident, met death in a local gas plant fire and another brother, Albert, was killed in a fall in the city a year ago. Mrotek served on the Mexican border with the local national guard company and was overseas with the Red Arrow troops and participated in all their major engagements including the Argonne and Chateau Thierry. He was a member of the Eagles and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Mrotek was born in this city August 20, 1882. He was for some years in the engineering department on Great Lakes steaers. He never married. The funeral was held today with Mass at St. Boniface Church and full military honors with interment at Calvary. EUGENE G. MROTEK Eugene G. Mrotek, age 87, of 1231 S. 20th St., Manitowoc, died on Sunday evening, June 8, 2008, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc. Gene was born on April 23, 1921, son of the late Alex and Pauline (Korlesky) Mrotek. He attended Lincoln High School, Manitowoc. Gene joined the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Gene's years as a circus performer are divided into two segments, before and after World War II. At the outbreak of World War II, he was performing in Havana, Cuba. He was home only a week when he was hired at the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company where his father and five brothers were already working in the shipyards. Before he was drafted, Gene enlisted in the Army Air Corps, but was placed in the Army. He trained at Camp Swift, Texas, and Camp Polk, La. He took part in desert maneuvers in Arizona and California and took mountain training in West Virginia. He sailed to England aboard the SS America and landed there about a week after the invasion at Normandy. He was in France with the 3rd Army and was hit in several places by shrapnel when crossing the Moselle River. He was also injured in Germany, this time more seriously. His unit was preparing to attack the Siegfried Line on the German western front. Gene spent a week in a field hospital and then went back to his outfit. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and ended his army service as a Staff Sergeant with the new 9th Army. He was awarded two purple hearts and a bronze star. After the war, Gene returned home, and continued his acrobatic training with the Billy Schultz Circus. After a few years at home, he rejoined the circus as a "catcher" for the Yacopi Troupe, the man that caught the acrobats as they descended from their lofty perches. Gene has many photos from his time in the circus, but three that stand out are the three that involve famous stars. The first is one of him with a terrified Jimmy Duranti on his shoulders. The second photo is of the troupe with Bob Hope at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The third photo was taken in New York in 1950 with Kirk Douglas on Gene's shoulders. To Gene, the circus was like one big happy family. When Gene decided to settle down, he moved back to Manitowoc, enrolled in an apprenticeship program and became a carpenter for Hamann Construction Co., and eventually retired from Hamann Construction Co. On Aug. 16, 1958, he married Lenore Markowski at the former St. Mary's Catholic Church, Manitowoc. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) He is preceded in death by five brothers: Harry, Benny, Louis, Danny and Max; and four sisters: Irene, Della, Alice and Grace. Richard Klingeisen, with entombment to follow in Calvary Mausoleum. The AMVETS Post 99, Manitowoc, will accord military rites. JEANETTE MUELLER Mrs. Kurt (Jeanette) Mueller Sr., age 99, died peacefully and in the presence of her children on Sunday night, April 25, 2010, at Aurora Medical Center of Manitowoc County. Better known as Nanny Jean to her family and friends, Mrs. Mueller was born in Manitowoc, on Aug. 7, 1910, a daughter of Charles and Mary Schipper Rustboldt. She was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and held dearly to her faith in Jesus Christ and the promise of a life hereafter. Mrs. Mueller was a graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School where she played saxophone in the high school band. A musical talent enabled her to enjoy playing piano throughout her life. On May 13, 1933, she was married to Kurt W. Mueller Sr. at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Mr. Mueller died in 1999 at 90 years of age. The focus in life for Nanny was her family, whom she inspired in a remarkable and always loving way. She had a genuine interest in any little thing you told her and a mountain of appreciation for any favor turned her way. In spite of her many years, Nanny was never old to those who best knew her. Til the end, she would be sitting at the kitchen table talking up the news of the day or reminiscing countless events from her century of life dating to the time when automobiles had just replaced horses on the streets of Manitowoc. Nanny Jean had an intense interest in people, along with a charm and intelligence that quickly endeared her to even a stranger who'd just met her. Armed with a gift of gab, she could be the center of attention in a moment's notice. She had a wit and a way with words. Never a dog lover, a funny thing is that Nanny's life made her the focal point of a dog-loving family and she often said "When you write my obituary, I want it known that I'd driven my husband (a former dog show judge) to dog shows in every state in the Union." Mr. Mueller was a well-known dog trainer in Manitowoc in the 1940s, who gained national recognition as such, and in later life, became an all-breed dog show judge. Together they traveled to shows throughout the United States, in Canada and in South America. In her day, Nanny Jean's culinary skills were second to none, so much so that Karl Ratzsch once solicited her to cook "pigs in the blanket" for his world-famous German restaurant in Milwaukee. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) Jeanette was also preceded in death by an infant daughter and by two special sisters: Gertrude and Margaret; and three brothers,: Irwin, Walter and Elmer; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 30, 2010, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Community, 8100 Brunner Road, Newton. The Rev. Gerald Foley will officiate. Burial of her cremated remains will take place at Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call on Friday at church from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11 a.m. The Jens Family Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the Mueller family. Memorials may be made to the St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Community building fund. Nanny Jean's family would like to thank her caregiver, Sue Nate, good friends, Sue Karbon and Shirley Fessler, and the staff of Aurora VNA Hospice for all the wonderful and loving care given to Nanny. News of the death of Mr. Mueller came as a decided shock and surprise to his many friends and acquaintances as he had been active in the conduct of his grocery store and other business interests up until the time he died. Thought to Be in Sleep Details regarding Mr. Mueller could not be secured at the hour of going to press, other than that he was about 45 years of age and is survived by his widow and eight children. It is thought that Mr. Mueller had been dead for several hours before the discovery was made. He was not able to pursue his business interests to the fullest extent the past several weeks and when he retired for a rest it was believed that there was nothing unusual in his condition. Complete details regarding Mr. Mueller and the funeral arrangements will be published in tomorrow night’s edition of this paper. Manitowoc Herald News, March 19, 1929 P. 1 ******** FUNERAL OF JNO. Mr. Mueller had resided with his wife, Jeanette, at 7715 Dutch Road, where they had established Mueller’s Retriever Kennels, one of the Midwest’s largest sporting dog kennels of the early 1950’s. The family later moved to Two Rivers. On May 13, 1933, Mr. Mueller married the former Jeanette Rustboldt of Manitowoc, at St. Boniface Catholic Church. As a young man, Mr. Mueller became a newspaper advertising salesman, working for various newspapers in Wisconsin, before he took employ with the Manitowoc Herald Times, where he became classified advertising manager. In 1945, Mr. Mueller left the newspaper to embark on his dog training career. His early passion to train dogs was sparked when he attended a retriever field trial in Brown Deer where he was impressed with the dog handling demonstrated by a reknowned English trainer. It followed that Mr. Mueller became a winning field trial handler of the 1940s, built on the solid success of Field Champion Gun of Arden, a Labrador owned by Manitowoc industrialist Guido Rahr. In 1937, two years after the Manitowoc County Kennel Club was founded, Mr. Mueller became its president, and he was instrumental in obtaining both dog show and field trial licenses for the club. He served as chairman of the club’s first American Kennel Club licensed dog show in 1944, then as chairman of the club’s first AKC licensed retriever trials in 1947-48-49. During World War II, Mr. Mueller served as a recruiter of the United States Army’s Division of Dogs for Defense. In 1968, a change of career saw Mr. Mueller become a dog show judge. AGNES MULHOLLAND (d. 1920) DEATH OF MISS MULHOLLAND A SUDDEN SHOCK Numberless friends of Miss Agnes Mulholland, many of whom did not know that she was ill, were shocked to learn that she had passed away at Holy Family hospital Sunday. She had been ill only a short time and was required to undergo an operation which was not thought to be very dangerous. She failed to rally and passed away early Sunday. Miss Mulholland was born in this city in 1881 and resided here during her life. She graduated from the St. Boniface parish school, the north side high school and St. Clara’s College at Sinsinawa Mound, Wis. For several years she was in the chemical department of the Cereal Products Company and became fascinated with commercial chemistry from which it was evident she had a decided bent. She had been taking a course in this line at the University of Wisconsin and a career in this work, which she had come to love, spread before her when the hand of death wrote “finis” to her plans. She is survived by her father, Henry Mulholland, and a sister, Marie, with both of whom she made her home. There are also a number of near kindred of the Mulholland and Richard O’Connor families. The funeral will be held Wednesday at the home of 1014 St. Clair street with mass at the Sacred Heart church at nine o’clock. The death of this young woman coming almost without warning sent a pank (sic) of regret to many a heart. Of few could it be so truthfully said that she had no enemies. Her “life was gentle.” But it was more than that. A sunny disposition, a wholesome frankness, a pure soul all combined with ambition and methodical industry made a useful essential life which is now cut off just when fields of greater usefulness were opening. Her family, her social circle and her church, where she worked with a lively faith, will sadly miss the presence of sweet, modest girl who always generously gave but never asked. FRANCES E. MULHOLLAND Mrs. Henry Mulholland, aged 62 years, died at her home, 1014 St. Claire street, last Thursday evening. She had been an invalid for some time and despite the best of medical treatment she gradually lost ground and the last few weeks failed rapidly. Mrs. Hulholland was born in Quebec, Canada, but came with her parents to Manitowoc when a child and had lived here practically all her life. She was educated in the public schools of this city and was a teacher of the county for several years, being at one time a member of the faculty of the old North Side high school. She was married in 1876 to Henry Mulholland who with two daughters, Misses Marie and Agnes, survive. her. She also leaves two sisters, Misses Isabel and Nellie O'Connor and one brother, Ben O'Connor. Mrs. Hulholland was a woman of culture, refinement, sympathy, a devoted mother, an affectionate wife and a true friend. She was a member of the Sacred Heart church and was well known for her activity in church work. Her Christian life was beautiful from its beginning to its close and through all the mutations and sorrows that she met in the way, her faith in God never wavered. But she is gone and today the autumn leaves fall upon another grave that hides from our sight the mortal remains of a true and noble woman. The funeral was held from Sacred Heart church Monday morning, Rev. J.T. O'Leary officiating. Burial was in Calvary cemetery. Those from outside who attended the funeral were Robert Mulholland and daughter May of Menominee, Mich.; Dr. Peter Mulholland and wife, Mrs. H. W. Davies, Mrs. E.J. HENRY MULHOLLAND CITY’S OLDEST OFFICIAL AUTO VICTIM H. MULHOLLAND, CITY SEALER, FATALLY HURT Dies at Hospital Few Minutes After Accident Henry Mulholland, believed to be the oldest official of any municipality in Wisconsin, pioneer resident of Manitowoc and one of the best known of the city, gave his life to tragedy today when he suffered fatal injuries as result of an unfortunate accident at noon. Mr. Mulholland was struck by an automobile at Tenth and Park streets while on his way home from his offices in the city hall, and death came to him a few minutes after he had been removed to the hospital. Mr. Mulholland never regained consciousness after having been struck by the automobile or its fender and thrown to the walk. He suffered injuries, but death is believed to have been primarily due to the shock. The injured man lost considerable blood as result of his hurts. The accident occurred when Joseph M.Wilda, who was driving the car which struck Mulholland down drove out toward the curb to avoid hitting Simon Sladkey, who had stepped almost directly into the path of the oncoming machine. Wilda did not see Mulholland, and the first intimation he had of danger was the cry of his wife, who was riding in the front seat with him. Mulholland was struck by the fender of the machine, thrown back onto the sidewalk and the impact crushed his left leg and inflicted other injuries that resulted in death within less than a half hour. Mr. Mulholland was still breathing when the hospital was reached but passed away ten minutes later without having regained consciousness. Tragedy a Great Shock News of the tragedy, which resulted in the death of Mr. Mulholland, came as a great shock to the community and arouses widespread sympathy for his bereaved daughter who is a patient at a sanatarium at Oconomowoc to which city she went yesterday. The effect of the news upon Miss Mulholland is feared. Wilda Makes Statement Mr. Wilda voluntarily reported to the police following the accident and made the following statement: “I was returning from a trip to the country. Mrs. Frank Straka, my sister-in-law, had been staying at our house for two weeks and taking medical treatments. She had been told by the doctor that she could go home for a week and asked that I take her home this morning. Because the weather was pleasant my wife and my daughter, Mrs. Foster Nelson, said they would accompany me and we left the house at 10:30 for the Straka home in the town of Gibson. We stayed there only about ten minutes and started back for home. It was about 12:15, we were coming south on North Water street, and we turned to go west on Park street. Just as we swung to make the turn Simon Sladkey suddenly appeared in the path of the car and in order to avoid hitting him I swerved as far over toward the curb as I could go. Just as I passed Sladkey my wife cried, “Oh!, Mr. Mulholland.” I did not see him at all but knew I had struck him. I stopped within a car length and ran back and we picked Mr. Mulholland up from the sidewalk where he lay and put him close to the building. The fender must have hit him just as he stepped from the curb. I did not see him at all.” Was “Youngest” Old Man Mr. Mulholland, whose proud boast it was that he was always on the job, had been at his offices in the city hall this morning in his usual health and spirits and had left at noon for his home. It was while on his way there that he met with the accident. Although Mr. Mulholland had suffered two attacks of illness the last few months he had apparently fully recovered and said yesterday that he was in the best of health. Had Passed 82nd Birthday Henry Mulholland was eighty-two years old and came from one of the pioneer families of Maintowoc coun- Continued page 9 H. MULHOLLAND, CITY SEALER, FATALLY HURT (Continued from page 1.) -y, a family that was very prominent in the early history of the county. He was born in Scotland June 13, 1841 and came to America with his parents when but a child. The family lived at Boston for a few years and then came to Wisconsin, settling with a number of other families in the Town of Meeme, Manitowoc county and it was here that Mr. Mulholland received his early education. Later he became a school teacher in which capacity he served for a number of years. He served as a clerk in old Vila & Barnes store and later became a member of the firm, the company for many years being known as Barnes, Mendlik & Mulholland. Still later Mendlik and Mulholland together operated the store and retired from business about fifteen years ago. Since his retirement from business Mr. Mulholland has been connected with the city in official capacity and was at present the city sealer of weights and measures, a position which he had held for a number of years and an office in which he bore the distinction of being the oldest active official in the state. Held Many Offices During his residence in this city, Mr. Mulholland held many official positions, having represented his ward as both county supervisor and as alderman and the city on the park commission. Under the old school system he was a member of the north side school board for a number of years. The Mulhollands celebrated their golden wedding some years ago and Mrs. Mulholland preceded her husband in death six years ago. He is survived by his daughter, Miss Marie, who is a patient at an Oconomowoc sanitarium where she went for treatment yesterday, and two brothers, Robert of Menominee, Mich., and William, Kenosha and one sister, Mrs. Cleary, also of Kenosha. He was a member of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin, the Catholic Knights of America and the Knights of Columbus. Funeral arrangements had not been made today and will be announced later. Irony of Fate The tragic death of Mr. Mulholland through accident today is the very irony of fate. Past eighty-two years of age he was a man of activity who daily attended to his duties as city sealer and was at his offices constantly during working hours when not engaged in his duties outside. He possessed a retentive memory and was in possession of a bright mind and a student of affairs and an earnest reader of world events. Few men were better posted on the history of Manitowoc county than Mr. Mulholland and his chief delight was in recalling events of the past when occasions made their recounting of interest. Mr. Mulholland was a warm personal friend of Judge Michael Kirwan and of the late John Barnes, both of whom were pupils in his school in the town of Meeme when, in his younger days, he was leader in education work of the county. Manitowoc Herald News, August 30, 1923 pp 1, 9 ******** An Unfortunate Accident The unfortunate accident which caused the death of Henry Mulholland yesterday is most regrettable and emphasizes the wisdom of pedestrians as well as drivers adhering to caution at all times. Mr. Wilda, owner of the car, is recognized as one of the most careful automobile drivers of the city and was endeavoring to avoid another pedestrian who was menaced by being in the path of the machine. It is a misfortune that cases of this kind are subject to misrepresentation by sensational rumors which find no foundation in fact and the inquiry conducted by the authorities in this case establishes that the tragedy was one of those unforeseen and not to be avoided fatalities which mark the path of many in human life. Henry Mulholland was one of the best known of the pioneer residents of the city and through his long association with business and civic life had a wide acquaintance and his death is a distinct shock to the community. He was universally respected for his integrity and his conscientious performance of any duty with which he was entrusted. He had served in official capacity in the city and county government and had been a faithful servant to the public. Mr. Mulholland had always been keenly interested in public affairs and was one of the few remaining pioneer teachers of the county, a distinction in which he took great pride. He was affable and companionable and interesting and his presence about the city hall and the city will be missed. To have survived the ailments to which human flesh is heir for eighty-two years, retain one’s faculties and possess the activity of Mr. Mulholland is a record that is remarkable and then to have life snuffed out by tragedy such as befell him yesterday is truly the irony of fate. Manitowoc Herald News, August 31, 1923 P. 2 ******** MULHOLLAND FUNERAL WILL BE HELD SATURDAY Services at Sacred Heart at 9 a.m. Burial at Calvary No decision as to the holding of an inquest in the death of Henry Mulholland, city sealer, who died from injuries when struck by an automobile yesterday, has been reached, but it was stated today on authority that investigation by the coroner and district attorney which had been completed, probably eliminated necessity for an inquest and that none would be held. According to the authorities the accident was unavoidable and no responsibility attachés to Mr. Wilda, driver of the car. Funeral Held Tomorrow. Funeral services for Mr. Mulholland will be held tomorrow morning at Sacred Heart church at 9 o’clock, the Rev. W. J. Luby officiating, and burial will be at Calvary. Miss Marie Mulholland, who had been at Oconomowoc, was enroute to her return home at the time of the fatal accident and learned of the sad circumstances upon her arrival at 5 o’clock. The body of Mr. Mulholland was taken to the family home last evening. Flags on city buildings, the city hall, fire station and others were at half mast yesterday in honor of Mr. Mulholland, whose death is the second in the official city family within the past month, Alderman Edward Thorison having passed away two weeks ago. A Trick of Fate. The part played by fate in the death of Mr. Mulholland was revealed today by Jerry Kretche, who, had he followed his inclination to take up a business matter with Mulholland when he encountered the latter at the noon hour on the street, would probably have delayed Mr. Mulholland’s arrival at the fated corner of Tenth and Park where the tragedy occurred. Mr. Kretche had some business with the city sealer, but appreciating that Mr. Mulholland was a strong advocate of punctuality in his appointments, hesitated to detain him to take up the matter when he met him on the street and decided to wait until later in the day. Had Mr. Kretche held the conference when he met Mr. Mulholland, the chances are that the latter would not have met his death in the manner he did. City Officials at Funeral. City officials will attend the funeral of Mr. Mulholland in a body tomorrow, and members of the council will also attend. Societies of which he was a member will be represented at the services. Mayor Georgenson today paid tribute to Mr. Mulholland as an efficient and faithful official. Manitowoc Herald News, August 31, 1923 P. 1 ******** MANITOWOC MAN HONORED Henry Mulholland, official city weigher and sealer who was elected vice president of the Wisconsin Weights and Measures Association at its annual conference in Madison, receives this honor in recognition of his pioneer work in standardizing weights in Manitowoc where he had served as city sealer since the local department of weights and measures was established twelve years ago. At 81, he is the oldest active city official in Wisconsin and in point of service is one of the oldest men in his line of work in this country. Born near Glasgow, Scotland in 1841, Mr. Mulholland came to the United States in a sailing vessel. He was then only 4 and the sea voyage required six weeks. His father, a cloth printer, became foreman of a textile mill in Fall River, Mass., and was the first mechanic to understand machinery printing of cloth patterns in the United States. Five years after the migration from Scotland, the elder Mulholland was ordered by doctors to get out of door work. He came west with his wife and three boys of whom Henry was the youngest and settled on a heavily timbered quarter section southwest of Manitowoc. His was the first Scotch family to establish residence in Manitowoc County. Despite his advanced age, Mr. Mulholland is one of the most active city sealers in Wisconsin. At the recent convention he introduced a resolution to amend the present weights law so as to permit city sealers, who are appointed only in cities having 5000 or more in population, to test weights and measuring devices in the country districts adjacent to their cities. “This system would give quick service to country communities who now must wait until a state inspector can arrange a trip.” he declared. “Recently, I got a telephone call from a Society of Equity secretary who wanted to buy some large scales.”, he said. “The society had a chance to buy a bargain for cash, the possible savings was $50 but the members were unwilling to buy unless sure of the accuracy of the scales. While not having any official jurisdiction in the matter, I took my set of tested weights and drove to the place 15 miles away. I found the scales to be sufficiently accurate. Then I reported my action to the state office at Madison. Our present law could be amended to give city sealers the authority to make inspections in nearby villages which ares seldom reached by the men travelilng from the state office.” Mr. Mulholland enjoys having strangers make guesses regarding his age. His keen hearing and eyesight combined with a quick, firm step, are apt to make new friends estimate his age at about 60. This seems most remarkable when one learns that at 9 he helped to clear the farm on which he was raised and that on reaching his majority, he enlisted in the Twenty-Seventh Wisconsin Volunteers and served under General Banks until the close of the civil war. Since 1850 he has lived continuously in Manitowoc County. – From Milwaukee Sunday Journal Manitowoc Pilot – Thurs, Nov. 2, 1922

DR. JOHN MULHOLLAND Henry Mulholland returned from Jordan, Minn., today acompanying the body of his brother the late Dr. John Mulholland which will be buried here. Funeral services will be held from the Henry Mulholland home tomorrow morning to Sacred Heart church and interment will be at Calvary cemetery. Pall bearers will be Drs. J.E. Meany, W.A. Donahue, A.M. Farrel, J.A. Roberts, W.G. Kemper and F.S. Luhmann. Manitowoc Herald News, Tuesday, August 26, 1919 P. 2 ******** Dr. John Mulholland, for many years a resident of this county and for thirteen years a practicing physician here, died at Jordan, Minn., last Saturday. He was born in Pawtucket, Mass., Feb., 1849. Dr. Mulholland's father was a very early settler in Meeme and played an important part for a quarter century of the county's history. The family was reared in the then Irish settlement and were always respected and their many admirable qualities thoroughly recognized and appreciated, although the Mulhollands were of Scotch stock. The Doctor spent the most active years of his life in practice in the West and came back to Manitowoc to a semi-retirement and confined his practice here to the eye and ear. Some twelve years ago he went to Kenosha and the past few years has been in charge of a sanitarium in Minnesota. He never married. He is survived by three brothers, Henry of this city, William of Kenosha and Robert of Menominee and two sisters, Mrs. Agnes Cleary of Kenosha and Mrs. Van Patton of Anaheim, Calif. How thorough a student Dr. Mulholland was and of how high an order was his intellect only his few intimates knew. The late John Nagle, a capable judge held Dr. Mulholland's attainments in profound respect as he often intimated. In some branches of his professioin he might have attaiined distinction had he had ambition for anything more than the quiet of the student's laboratory and library. He trod his own path; quiet and serene, with many friends, few intimates and no enemies and passed away as unobtrusively as he lived. A kind, big-hearted, big-brained man, a real gentleman of the old school has gone down the long road to which all roads lead. The funeral was held yesterday morning from the home of his brother, Henry. Services were held at Sacred Heart Church, Father Luby officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery. The pallbearers were Drs. J. F. Meany, W. A. Donohue, A.M. Farrel, J.A. Roberts, W. G. Kemper and F. S. Luhman. Those from outside who were here for the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mulholland, Menominee, Mrs. Agnes Cleary, Mrs. Owen Hanoway, Dr. and Mrs. Wm Flatley, Kenosha, Mr. Eugene McGinnity, Edgerton; Miss Alice Mulholland, Milwaukee; Thos Flatley and Dr. A. Forkin, Chilton. Manitowoc Pilot - Thurs., Aug. 28, 1919 ******** Dr. John Mulholland left for his home in Minnesota last week. Manitowoc Pilot, Thursday, September 13, 1888

CAPT. PETER MULHOLLAND CAPTAIN MULHOLLAND. Captain Peter Mulholland died in Milwaukee at Trinity Hospital on Sunday night at half past ten. On February 13 he had a surgical operation performed for calculus of the liver. Other complications set in and he had a second operation performed. After this he seemed to be quite well until Saturday last. On Sunday he had grown worse and a third operation was performed, but only for the purpose of relieving him as it was then quite evident that ultimate recovery was hopeless. Death came suddenly, the liver, kidneys and heart almost simultaneously ceasing their functions. His brother Henry left early Monday morning for Milwaukee and returned Monday night with the remains. The funeral took place Wednesday forenoon from the Catholic church. Mr. Mulholland leaves a wife and quite a large family of children. He was born in Campsie, Scotland, January 21, 1838, and came to this country with his parents in 1845. They spent five years in Massachusetts and settled in Meeme in 1850. Captain Mulholland received the best common school education the country then afforded, after which he attended the commercial college of Bryant & Stratton in Chicago. He taught country schools in Meeme and surrounding towns for some time and in the fall of 1862 became 2nd lieutenant of Co. D., 27th regiment, that of which Jo. Rankin was captain. He afterwards became captain of Co. K. He took part in the siege of Vicksburg and while at the Yazoo river became sick and came home, almost a skeleton, for recuperation. He again went to the front and remained there until the close of the war. He was married during the war. When he returned to Manitowoc he and Michael Maguire, a brother-in-law, and fellow soldier, engaged in the mercantile business but did not continue in it long. Later he served as sheriff of Manitowoc county two terms, conducted a mercantile business at Grimms and Centerville, was paymaster of the Lake Shore & Western Railway Co. while Mr. Vilas was president, and moved to Dakota 14 years ago. After 9 years spent there he returned to Manitwoc and again went into the employment of the railway company. He later took a position in the Adjutant General's office and became secretary of the State Board of Control. The last position he held was secretary of the The Milwaukee Times Co. Captain Mulholland was a man of sterling integrity, active, earnest and fearless. He filled many public positions and all with credit to himself. Though always courteous, he was candid and outspoken. A young man in a new country, he won the respect of the hardy pioneers, none of whom could endure greater privations than he. He met death fearlessly and died as he had lived, never shirking a duty or fearing the consequences. Manitowoc Pilot, Thursday, March 1, 1894 P. 3 ********** At the funeral of Captain Peter Mulholland yesterday, the Catholic Knights and the members of the Grand Army took equal parts. The union of these two societies in paying respect to a deceased member was the subject of favorable comment on every hand. Manitowoc Pilot, Thursday, March 1, 1894 P. 3 ******** “Capt. During the war he served honorably in the 27th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment as captain of Company “K”. Upon leaving service he settled in Manitowoc where he was elected sheriff. He went to the Dakotas for a while, but returned here in 1890. He served a post in the capital of Madison until last summer, when his health began to fail. He leaves his widow and 5 children. Ninth street. Professor Nusang, who was 82 years of age, had been a resident of the city of Manitowoc since 1867 and had been active up until the time he was stricken with illness in March. Born in Alsace, Lorraine, on August 14, 1848, Professor Nusang spent his boyhood there and for 10 years studies the classics at the University at Pont a Mousson, Alsace Lorraine. When a young man of 19, he sailed for America and took up his residence in Manitowoc in the year 1867. Although he taught later at Holy Cross, Wilson, Hilbert, in Walworth county, Ohio and Nebraska, he always considered this city as his home and was for many years a professor of Latin and German in the South Side (now the Roosevelt) school. Was Noted Scholar Professor Nusang was known in Manitowoc and vicinity as a real scholar as well as an accomplished musician and derived his greatest pleasure from his studies and the imparting of the knowledge for students, either in the classroom or in his own home where for years he taught French, Spanish and other languages. He knew and taught five different languages. He was a man who enjoyed the admiration of the entire community and although he was of advancing years, he was a familiar figure in downtown Manitowoc up until only a few months ago. Leaves Wife, Daughter On November 11, 1875, he was married to Miss Mary Riplinger who, with a daughter, Miss Marie, a teacher of languages at Los Angeles, California, survive him. A son died in infancy. Although primarily interested in his home, Professor Nusang was an active church member and was a member of the Holy Name society and the Catholic Knights. EDWARD MURPHY FEAR MANITOWOC BOY WENT DOWN WITH STR SIMMONS Edward Murphy, North Side Man, Reported to Have Been Member of Crew of Missing Schooner on Last Trip One Manitowoc man may have been lost with the Christmas Ship, Rouse Simmons, when the boat went down, it is believed, off Two Rivers Point, north of this city. The name of Edward Murphy appears in the crew of the Simmons and it is feared that its owner was a Manitowoc man, of that name, a son of the late Maurice Murphy, who has not been heard from by relatives for some time. Inquiry is being made in an effort to establish whether Murphy was on the Simmons and relatives are anxiously awaiting the result. Mr. Murphy, who is a brother of Mrs. G. Sietz, York and Fifth Street, left Manitowoc years ago and for a time was located in the West with a brother, Maurice Murphy, but it is said to have returned to Chicago to have followed the lakes. Mr. Murphy has a nephew who is a namesake and it is possible, say relatives, that the man lost with the Simmons was the nephew of the local man, though grave fears are entertained that such is not the case and that the man who was lost with the Christmas Ship is the former Manitowoc resident. Edward Murphy was 43 years of age and is well remembered in this city where he was reared and spent his early boyhood. The family resided at Lake and York streets and young Murphy attended the local schools. In later life he followed the lakes and then for a time was in the West where with a brother, he was engaged in salmon fishing. His mother and sister still reside here and are much worried over reports that he was lost with the Simmons. Two Rivers fisherman found additional traces of what is believed to be the cargo of the Simmons Thursday and the nets again brought up large pieces of tree tops and Capt. George Sogge of the life saving crew again reiterated his firm belief that the Simmons went down off Two Rivers Point. Capt. Sogge’s belief is strengthened by the fact that on November 23, when his crew patrolled the lake for five hours when report was received that a three-masted schooner was in distress and being driven by a northwest wind, no trace of the boat could be found. Capt. Sogge says he was able to see a distance of six miles and found no trace of the vessel which he believes went down before his crew could reach the scene. The Two Rivers crew was out today and patrolled the lake as far north as Sandy Bay, six miles north of Two Rivers point where it is thought the Simmons went down but found no wreckage or other evidence of the loss. However, the fact that fishermen have continued to find pieces of fir tree tops with which the Simmons was loaded, is accepted as evidence that the boat was sunk. Rest of article details further searches for the ship.. MAURICE MURPHY DEATH RELEASES HIM Maurice Murphy, Old Resident, Had Suffered Affliction for 9 Years Death came as a welcome angel of deliverance to Maurice Murphy, one of the city's oldest residents at an early hour this morning, ending a life which for nine years past has been darkened by affliction and pain suffering. Mr. Murphy, who was 88 years of age, had been afflicted by blindness for nine years and more recently suffered from a complication of diseases which caused death. Mr. Murphy was a native of Ireland born in Malla County in 1821 and came to America as a youth of 18, being employed at St. Louis, came north and located here more than half a century ago. He was well and favorably known and was esteemed by many friends. Through all the years of affliction he was patient and uncomplaining. A wife, two sons, Edward of Washington and Maurice of Michigan and one daughter, Mrs. George Seitz, this city survive. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Manitowoc Daily Herald - Sat., Aug. 21, 1909 ******** Death Saturday morning after a long illness of 88-year old Maurice Murphy. The deceased, who was blind for the last nine years, is one of the old pioneers in our city where he has resided over 50 years. He is survived by his widow, 2 sons and a daughter. Der Nord Westen, 26 Aug. 1909 ******** DIED In the death of Maurice Murphy at his home on York street last Saturday disappeared one of the last of the old guard of early Irish settlers. Mr. Murphy was born in the town of Mallow, County Cork, Ireland, in 1821 and came to America at the age of 18. After some years residence in Boston and St. Louis he settled in Manitowoc in 1855 and for many years was a trusted employe [sic] of the Jonah Richards Iron Works. In his passing the first colony on the north shore has now left only Mr. and Mrs. James Barry. Mr. Murphy never moved from the neighborhood. He is survived by an aged widow, two sons, and a daughter, Mrs. George Seitz. Mr. Murphy represented a common type of the Irish settlers diametrically the opposite of the caricatures of the race often seen, he being of exemplary habits, industrious and a sincere and devout Christian. He created friendship in all acquaintances by an unaffected gentleness of manners and thoughtful regard of others. His patience in many years of affliction has been the admiration of his friends. The funeral was held from the Sacred Heart church on Monday. Interment was in Calvary cemetery. The Manitowoc Pilot, August 26, 1909, Page 1
