Albert Allen, for many years a resident of the city, passed away at Neenah last evening after a lingering illness of more than a year. Mr. Allen was born in Yorkshire, N.Y., on Nov. 3, 1858 (sic), and came to Wisconsin when a young man, accepting a railroad position, which vocation he followed until ten years ago when he was retired on pension when Mrs. Allen, who suffered ill health, necessitated his constant attention and companionship. JAMES ALLEN From the Manitowoc Tribune- we learn that the body of James Allen, who was drown at Manitowoc Rapids on the 4th, was recovered on the 8th. Daily State Journal, Madison, Wisconsin, Thursday, July 14, 1859 Page 1 ********* A HEART-RENDING CALAMITY - We were never called upon to record such a sad and melancholy accident as the death, by drowning, of Mr. James Allen, of Manitowoc Rapids-one of the most estimable and respected citizens of our county. He was in this village on the Fourth, enjoying the society of his friends, and started for home about 5 o'clock, P.M. Not arriving to his family in season, fears were entertained, and search was made next day. His hat was found in the river near the Rapids, which fact confirmed the worst fears of his friends. Search was continued until Thursday morning, when his cold and lifeless body was found beneath the waters. It is supposed that in crossing the bridge, at the Rapids, he missed his footing and fell in the angry waters, never to rise again. He was a very intelligent man, and possessed the confidence and esteem of all his neighbors-being, at the time of his death, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors. A wife and seven children are left to mourn his sudden and unexpected death. May a kind Providence comfort and protect them. Resolved, That we here certify our sincere respect for his estimable qualities as a citizen, husband and father. Resolved, That we tender our heartfelt sympathy to his bereaved family and friends, who have thus been deprived of one who was loved and respected by all who knew him. Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be forwarded by the Clerk to the widow of the deceased. Ordered further, that notice hereof be given to the heirs of said deceased and to all persons interested, by publishing a copy of this order for three successive weeks prior to said day of hearing in the Manitowoc Pilot, a weekly newspaper published at Manitowoc in said county. Geo. W. Barker, County Jduge. Dated at Manitowoc, the 19th day of August, 1868 Manitowoc Pilot, Thursday, August 21, 1868 P. 4 ********* STILL IN THE FAMILY Emil Baensch, in a communication published several weeks ago stated that the State Historical Society wants to get and publish a census of those farms 60 years old, or more, which are still in the families of the men and women who created them out of wild land. In response to the call Mrs. Jane D. Williams sent in the following interesting article. In 1831 James Allen, aged 24 years, came to St. Stephens, New Brunswick, from County Antrim in the North of Ireland. In 1836 Margaret Hamilton came to the same place from Dromore, County Down, Ireland. They were married in St. Stephens in 1840. Later they moved to Calais, Maine. While there he was engaged in lumbering. They came to Manitowoc Rapids in 1849, where he in 1851 purchased 80 acres of wild land. In 1852 he moved with his family to Cedar River in Northern Michigan. He was engaged in lumbering while there. In 1858 he and his family returned to Manitowoc Rapids. He built a house and barn and cleared 10 acres of land, getting it in crop that season. He had about 15 acres cleared when he was drowned in the river at Rapids on July Fourth 1859. He left a widow and seven children, the youngest ten months old. By hard work and good management the mother kept the home, improved the farm, and raised her children. The oldest son, James H., served three years in the Civil War, again leaving the burden of the management on the mother. She continued to live in the old house until 1902 when the son, Lyman E., who lived with her, was accidently killed by a horse. She died in 1902 at the home of her daughter, Jane D. Williams in Manitowoc Rapids, having reached the advanced age of eighty-four years. The farm passed into the possession of the daughter by the mother's will. The daughter still has a souvenier [sic] of pioneer days, some of the blankets which are the handiwork of herself and family. For those were home-spun days and the Allens produced their wool, carded and spun it, and wove it into cloth and blankets. Manitowoc Pilot June 16, 1921 page 1

She had been confined to her bed about four months before death came to her relief. Mrs. Allen was born in the county of Armagh, Ireland, May 12, 1821, and was over 80 years of age. She was the youngest of twelve children, none of whom survive her, except it may be a brother who wrote her a couple of years ago from Nova Scotia. On November 8, 1841, she was married to Samuel Allen at St. Stephens, New Brunswick. Mr. Allen went to California at the time of the gold craze of 1849 and remained there until 1853, when he returned to New Brunswick, and three years later Mr. Allen and family removed to Delta county, Michigan, where they resided about a year and a half. In 1858 they settled in Manitowoc county, this state, and remained there until the death of Mr. Allen, which occured December 6, 1893. The Central Wisconsin newspaper, July 20, 1901 ***** Mrs. Martha Allen Thursday afternoon, at 12:05, Mrs. Martha Allen, died at her home in this city, 619 Washington street, her death being a result of the infirmities of old age. She had been confined to her bed for several months, and though at times she showed slight signs of improvement, it was apparent to her relatives and friends that she could not recover and her demise was not therefore unexpected. Deceased lived to a greater age than that usually allotted to mankind. She was born in Ireland, May 12, 1821, and was the youngest of twelve children, none of whom survive her. The family emigrated to America in the early '30s and settled in the Canadian Province of New Brunswick. From the year '49 to '53 Mr. Allen spent in the gold fields of California, and three years later, after his return, he moved his family to Delta county, Mich., where they resided for a year and a half. In 1858 the family removed to Manitowoc county, this state, where deceased resided continuously up to the time of the death of her husband, which occurred Dec. 6th, 1893. The following spring in company with her daughter, Mrs. Eliza Pomeroy, she moved to Wausau to reside with her sons, William and James. She was the mother of seven children, four of whom survive her; in addition to the above named there being Mrs. L. Lawrence, of Manitowoc. Mrs. Allen was a woman of rare qualities of heart and mind, was a great reader, and kept in touch with the doings of this world. Though aged she retained her faculties up to the close of life. Ever a christian she did not fear the end. She was an affectionate wife, a loving and devoted mother, a true friend and neighbor, and though living in this city but a few years, had made scores of friends. Funeral services were held at the home Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. S.N. Wilson conductor. Herald Times Reporter, April 2003 ********* [widow of Claude Allie] ********* Mrs. Claude Allie Is Former Bernice Gilbert of This City White moiré made the gown reminiscent of the old fashioned picture frocks, which Miss Bernice Virginia Gilbert chose to wear for her wedding this morning to Claude Allie of Two Rivers, son of Mr. and Mr. Walter Allie, at the St. Paul's Catholic church. The quaint gown, bouffant and trailing, had a bodice cut in V-lines with a high neckline marked by pearl clips. Over the gown was a hip length veil and an illusion veil fell across the bride's face from the small cap which held it. The bride carried a bouquet of white mums and she held a white pearl rosary. Miss Gilbert, who is the daughter of Mrs. Bertha Gilbert, 2408 Wollmer street, exchanged her vows with Mr. Allie before the Rev. Martin Jaekles at 9 o'clock. Attending her were Miss Agnes Glysch as maid of honor and Miss Dolores Allie, the groom's sister, as bridesmaid. Hilary Schroeder was best man to the groom. Moire frocks made alike with fitted waistlines, puffed sleeves, square necklines and long fill skirts were worn by the bride's attendants this morning. Miss Glysch carried bronze mums against her frock of French green and Miss Allie's Rochelle pink frock had against it green mums for contrast. Both young women wore clusters of flowers in their hair. After the ceremony the young couple, their parents and their attendants went to the Catholic Center where they received the wedding guests. Those from out of town were Mr. and Mr. Henry Johnson, and Mr. and Mrs. Archie Peterson of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Peter J. CAROLINE F.W.H. V. ALTER OBITUARY. Died, the 21st of this month, Mrs. Caroline Von Alter, at the age of 75 years and five months. She was born at the ancestral manor of her father Baron Von Kutzleben near Langensalza in Thuringia, received an excellent education adequate to her position in life and was early married to Major Charles August Von Alter in 1819, who was then commanding the 25th Regiment of Prussian Infantry, for whom she exchanged the idyllic dales of her home with the classic regions of the Rhine; during her happy married life she became the mother of nine children, of whom only two are living to mourn her loss, and of whom one son died on the same date of her own death in 1842, at the age of 20 years. She lost her beloved husband in December 1847, and resolved to leave Germany with her two children for America in 1849, arriving in Buffalo in November of the same year, where she remained during the next winter and reached Manitowoc on the 5th of May 1850, where she has resided ever since with her children and their families. She was a most exemplary mother, apparently living only for the happiness of her family and ever trying to be a constant joy and comfort to them and to all who were near and dear to her, while her daughter and son and their children again, seemed to vie with each other to make the declining years of their aged parent as void of cares and troubles as earthly existence ever would permit. The funeral on last Sunday was very largely attended, her favorite hymns were played and sung at the grave and a very able and appropriate oration was delivered by one of her oldest acquaintances and friends, all trying to show the high esteem and reverence with which the beloved deceased had inspired every one who ever had had the pleasure and honor of her acquaintance. We close with the sincere wish that our last moments may be as happy and peaceful as those of her who has left us to meet again only in eternity. DORA (BEER) ALTER Death of Mrs. Alter is a Shock Death on the eve of the holiday season has cast its pall on the home of Oscar A. Alter, one of the city’s best known residents. Mrs. Alter’s death occurred at the hospital at 8:30 Saturday evening almost at the same hour that death claimed John Schuette, a relative of Mr. Alter. Although ill for some time, Mrs. Alter’s condition had becoming alarming only during the past week and she had been at the hospital only ten days when the end came. The announcement of her death came as a shock to the community. Mrs. Alter, nee Dora Beer, was a lifelong resident of Manitowoc, having been born in this city September 8, 1860, in a building in the same block where, for 30 years, Mr. and Mrs. Alter have made their home, their residence at 813 York Street being directly opposite to the building in which Mrs. Alter was born. Decedent attended the local schools, graduated here and from the Oshkosh normal and for some years previous to her marriage was a teacher in the third ward and second ward schools. She was married in 1884 to Oscar A. Alter, the husband who, with two sons, Erwin of L'anse, Mich., and Eugene of Milwaukee, survive here. One sister, Mrs. John Ornes of Minneapolis also survives. Mrs. Alter, while essentially a home woman, her home and family being her first thought, had taken an active interest in literary work and particularly in the Clio Club of which she served as president for several years, retiring from active association only when her health failed her. She was charitable and for many years was prominently identified with the work of the South Side Ladies Aid of which she was also president for a number of terms. A woman of gentle refinement, quiet and unassuming, she was endeared to a circle of friends who knew her generous nature and high character and who sincerely mourn her loss with a deep sense of appreciation of her life and character. Her funeral will be held tomorrow, Tuesday afternoon, from the home on York Street at 3 o’clock with the services conducted at the cemetery chapel by the Rev. M.S. Axtell. Mrs. William Borcherdt and Miss Mathilda Schmidt will sing. Manitowoc Herald Times, Monday, December 22, 1919 ********* [bur. 12-23-1919/cause: pelvic abcess/bur. on Oscar Alter lot]

EUGENE O.G. ALTER (VON ALTER) Died: July 15, 1882, Eugen Alter, aged 50 years, 3 months and six days. Mr. Alter was born in Coblenz, Germany, April 9, 1832. In his veins there flowed the blood of two of Germany's noble families. His father was a scion of the ancient and honorable house of Von Alter, while his mother, nee Von Kutzleben, could trace her lineage back into the misty times of the age of chivalry. Born under such fortuitous circumstances, he enjoyed the best of educational facilities. A few years after the death of his father, which occurred in 1847, he emigrated, with his mother and sister to America, which to him, was the land where the true form of free government was realized. After a few month's stay in Buffalo, he came, together with the aforementioned, to Manitowoc, in May, 1850. Thus it will be seen that he was one of our oldest settlers. With the exception of a few months, spent as a clerk in Milwaukee, he has lived here ever since. He has been engaged in various enterprises and business, and during the past seven or eight years has been in charge of the Clothing Department of J. Schuette and Bros. About four months ago, he was seized with an attack of inflammation of the bowels, and ever since his health has failed. He was subject to numerous spells of sickness during that time, yet from each one he rallied. But the last one was fatal. Exactly four months ago he became seriously sick, and during all those weary weeks, he suffered most excruciating pain. The scientific skill of the physician could give but temporary relief. Gradually the robust form wasted away; the hand of science was not strong enough to keep the dread destroyer distant; the grief of wife and sons was met with no mercy. He died, and perhaps death was merciful in relieving his terrible sufferings, which he bore with manly fortitude, and his unselfish, loving nature was never shown to better advantage than during those dreary days of sickness. No patient ever caused less trouble to those nursing him, than he. It was touching to see how anxious he was that none of his family should suffer inconvenience on account of him. Indeed, it is an inscrutable providence that allows rascality to thrive and enjoy health, while it dooms such a noble nature to weeks and months of suffering, which only ends in death. A wife and three sons, as well as a large number of relatives, mourn this loss. Upon the sanctity of the grief of the family let no one intrude. No one knows better of the terrible sufferings the deceased underwent, than she, who, day and night, sat at his bedside and ministered to his every want with loving hands, and as there was no other cure than death, her boundless love for the deceased will make her resigned to that fate. Let the sons, who are just on the verge of manhood, ever keep sacred the memory and emulate the virtues of him, who has gone before them "to the land of the hereafter." He reared them with a firm and loving hand, they were his pride, his comfort, his everything. Lakeshore Times, July 18, 1882 ********** The funeral of Mr. Alter occurs this afternoon at three o'clock. He will be buried with Masonic ceremonies, Bro. J.M. Craig delivering the oration. TEAM KILLED IN FALL Companion of Manitowoc Boy is Seriously Injured - Many Lives Lost at Scene of Accident Details Carried over a sixty foot precipice with his driver by a frightened team of horses, the whole outfit landing at the bottom in a tangled heap, are incidents surrounding the remarkable experience and miraculous escape from death of Reinhart Altmann son of C.F. Altmann the florist, of this city, who on Monday was the victim of the accident at Butte, Montana. In the fall the two horses were killed outright, the companion of Altmann, a livery man, received injuries that may prove fatal and the Manitowoc boy was picked up unconscious, and bleeding although subsequent investigation at the hotel to which the injured men were carried, revealed the fact that there were no broken bones. The shock of the fall and had body bruises, will, however, keep Altmann in a hospital for ten days. The driver sustained a fracture of both legs, three broken ribs and a broken arm. He may die. Details of the accident were received here by the father of the Manitowoc lad in a letter which told of the accident in full. Altman(sic) was on his way to investigate some coal mines located ten miles from Butte, and the road to be traversed led over the winding trails of the mountain passes. The trip was uneventful until about four miles of the journey were passed, the highway at this point being bounded on one side by a deep gulch and on the other by a precipice whose steep sides measured a sheer drop of sixty feet. Just at a place where the danger was greatest, and the road the narrowest, a huge bowlder(sic) became loosed from the mountain side and came crashing down upon them. The horses instinctively jumped to one side to avoid the oncoming stone and in so doing shot over the cliff carrying with them the vehicle, occupants and all. Altmann flew out of the carriage and to this fact may be attributed his escape for in landing he plunged headlong into a large sage bush which served as a protection, and broke his fall. He was badly cut about the face and body by the stiff branches of the tree and received a terrible shaking up which rendered him unconscious, not returning to his senses until physicians had worked over him for a long time at the hotel. The livery man, team and rigging landed in an almost inextricable mass and when help came to the rescue, which was not for some little time afterwards, Altman(sic) was found and thought to be dead, the driver in a like con- dition and both horses killed and mangled in terrible manner. Mr. Altmann has been absent for some time taking an extended trip that included visits at St. Louis and other cities of interest. He intended spending some little time in Montana before proceeding to Mexico but the terrible experience he suffered will alter his plans and in the letter home he tells of his intention to proceed here immediately after his recovery which will not be for ten days or two weeks. He has just cause to be thankful for his narrow and miraculous escape and particularly for the circumstances that caused the growth of the despised bush of the plains at the exact spot which would have been his death-bed but for its existence.
