EMMETT BROWN Horrible Accident. Early yesterday morning a terrible catastrope occurred at Hanson and Scove's ship-yard resulting in the instantaneous death of a young man. While Emmet Brown the twenty-year old son of Dr. Brown, was assisting the head-sawyer, John Johnson, to put a belt on a pulley, with which to run the jigger, his clothing was suddenly caught by a shaft and he was whirled round at the rate of about 60 revolutions a minute. At each revolution his body struck a post standing near, as well as the ground, he was instantly killed in this manner. The first time he was whirled around, his boots were flung a great distance, and with such force that when one of them struck Mr. Johnson, it knocked him down. From this the terible swiftness of the revolutions may be seen. Young Brown is said to have been a man of good qualities of head and heart and very fearless. The berieved parents and family can be assured of the full sympathy of the whole community. The funeral takes place tomorrow. Manitowoc Lake Shore Times, Tuesday, February 28, 1882 P. 1 ******** On Monday morning Emmett Brown, son of Dr. Brown, was killed in the saw mill of Hanson & Scove. A belt had become loose and young Brown went to assist in putting it on. His coat was caught by a shaft and instead of throwing his arms back and thus rid himself of the coat, he pressed in the other direction and was soon revolving on the shaft at a terrible rate. His head beat against a post and also against the floor, and was a mass of beaten flesh before the machinery was stopped. He was a young man of excellent habits, quite industrious and of considerable physical strength. His funeral takes place today. HENRY BRUINS Henry Bruins died Sunday evening at his home on South 16th Street. His death was caused by pneumonia after an illness of less than two weeks. Only two weeks ago he published an article attacking the proposed commission government, virtually the only anti-commission publicity attempted aside from letters to the press. He was born in Alto, Wis., in 1863 and came to Manitowoc, thirteen years ago. He was almost at the making of the present Socialist party and was a consistent propagandist up to his death. He came into prominence by being elected as a Socialist to the city council from the 5th Ward in the rising tide of Stolzeism in the first Stolze campaign. After his defeat for re-election he was never elected to office although loyalty to his principles made him lead any forlorn hope that "comrades" pointed out. He continued work in his "class conscious" propaganda, his fearlessness and frankness, his constant presence in the firing line led to his name being synonymous with extreme, uncompromising party socialism in the city. He worked for many months at the business end of the local party daily paper in a futile attempt to keep the organ alive. When it could no longer support an editor, he tried to be business manager, reporter, editor and compositor until the superhuman taks overwhelmed him and the paper. He was absolutely devoid of hatred or malice. He was probably the most thorough student of radical literature in the city. He knew all the classical treatises on economics and "Das Kapital" was his bible. Right or wrong he performed more unselfish labor for what he sincerely believed was the good of humanity than most of us who gave him little credit in the flesh. He is survived by a widow and three sons and a daughter-in-law, all residing here. The funeral is being held this afternoon and is in charge of the Manitowoc local of the Socialist Party. WILLIAM J. BRUINS Monoxide Fatal to W.J. Bruins Found Several Days After Death. William J. Bruins, 66, of 710 S. 25th St., was found dead of carbon monoxide poisoning in the garage of his home about 6 p.m. Thursday. Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen ruled the death accidental and said that life had been extinct several days. The body was found by Edward Karl of 614 S. 35th St., who had been asked by Mrs. Andrew Bruins, a sister-in-law of Bruins, to check on his whereabouts. Bruins had mentioned that he planned to go fishing outside the city when eating with them earlier in the week. Police theorized that Bruins, who lived alone, had been working on his car in the closed garage when he apparently became ill and started toward the door. An extension cord was found tangled around his right leg, indicating that he had stumbled and fallen near the rear of the car. The hood of the car was opened and a trouble light had been hooked to the motor, according to police. Its ignition switch was on but the motor had stopped after the gas supply ran out. Bruins was last seen alive Monday evening by a brother, Andrew, at whose home he took his meals occasionally. A woman reported that she had seen Bruins’ car parked in the driveway of his home Wednesday evening while on a visit to church. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Blaufuss officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Bruins was born in Holland Jan. 13, 1891, son of Henry and Hattie Van Beck Bruins. He came to Manitowoc 55 years ago with his parents. AUGUST BRUNMEIER ST. NAZIANZ MAN KILLS SELF IN PRESENCE OF FAMILY AUGUST BRUMEIER(sic) FIRES BULLET INTO BODY AND DIES SIX HOURS LATER OF THE WOUND TRAGEDY ON FRONT PORCH OF FARM HOME August Brumeier, a well known St. Nazianz farmer, committed suicide Sunday by firing a bullet into his body, the shot inflicting wound just above the heart from which Brumeier died six hours later. Brumeier was 45 years of age, married and the father of a family. The tragedy occurred on the porch of the Brumeier home in the presence of members of the family and whether Brumeier's mind was affected by the heat or the act was prompted by some other cause, is not known. The man had secured an old revolver, rusty from disuse and suddenly, without a word of warning, placed the weapon against his breast and fired the fatal shot. He was hurriedly removed to the house and physicians summoned and efforts made to save his life, but death ensued six hours later, at 10 o'clock last night. Brumeier is said to have been addicted to liquor and some time ago members of his family had taken steps to have the man posted and the action had been resented by the dead man who had been morose and despondent. Yesterday, it is reported, he visited St. Nazianz and succeeded in securing a quantity of beer which he carried home with him and he said to have consumed and when he was remonstrated with, left the house only to return a short time later with the revolver. As he mounted to the porch Brumeier placed the revolver to his body and fired. An investigation of the report that Brumeier was supplied with liquor after having been posted will probably be made and it is said that if it can be established where the man secured the beer, that application will be made to have the license of the dealer revoked. It is said that Brumeier had been posted not only at St. Nazianz but throughout the town. Brumeier was known in this city and was a brother of Mrs. Anton Kerscher, York street. Mrs. Kerscher received a telephone message late yesterday afternoon summoning her to St. Nazianz and immediately left for St. Nazianz but reached there too late, Mr. Brumeier having expired before her arrival. District Atty. Healy and Coroner Falge, accompanied by Sheriff Herman Schuette left for St. Nazianz this morning to investigate and determine whether an inquest was necessary. After investigation it was decided by District Attorney Healy that no inquest was necessary. Brumeier was 42(sic) years of age and the father of four children, the oldest being 15 and the youngest 8. The dead man was the owner of a 120 acre farm and was well-to-do. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, July 13, 1914 p.1 ******* BODY OF ST. NAZIANZ MAN BURIED HERE Opposition to Interrment (sic) There—Was a Suicide Because of opposition to the burial in the cemetery at St. Nazianz, because of circumstances surrounding his death, the body of August Brumeier(sic), who committed suicide by firing a bullet into his body, was brought here for interment at Evergreen this afternoon. The rules regulating Catholic burial grounds prohibit the burial of a suicide and for this reason there was opposition to Brumeier’s interment at St. Nazianz which has but the one cemetery. Relatives purchased a lot at Evergreen in this city and the body was brought here. Brumeier was a well-to-do farmer, owning a large farm at Nazianz. He killed himself in the presence of his son, on a porch at the family home last Sunday. Manitowoc Daily Herald, July 16, 1914 P. 3

******** [widow of Jerome A. Brunner/bur. on Fred A. and Anita Maresh lot]CHRISTIAN BRUNS FOUND DROWNED.-This is the simple verdict of the Coroner's Jury given yesterday on the body of Mr. Charles Bruns, one of the oldest and formerly most respected settlers of Manitowoc County.-But what is the cause of this sad accident? Intemperance of the victim and greed for gain of those who furnished the maddening drink. Mr. Bruns came to town with his aged wife last Saturday, sold two sheep skins for $1.25, spent the money in Liquor, was last seen alive about 11 o'clock of that evening staggering out of a saloon and found drowned yesterday noon in the boom of Messrs, Guyles & Pankratz's Saw mill. Thus ends the earthly existence of another man, once of fine mental qualifications, a faithful husband and loving parent, but too kind-hearted to be able to resist the temptation of the poisoning cup. Who would envy the momentary gain of those who caused his miserable end? Can such ever find peace? May God have mercy on all and console the disconsolate widow and her deeply afflicted children. WALTER W. BRUSS Bruss Instantly Killed When His Car Leaves Road Maribel Man Was Returning from Denmark Sunday Walter W. Bruss, 49, of Maribel, who with his father, Herman, of Green Bay, operated the Maribel Gravel company, was instantly killed early Sunday morning when his car went out of control on a town road three miles north of Maribel and overturned in the ditch, pinning the driver beneath the wrecked car body. Coroner Theodore Teitgen, who, with traffic officers Henry Pleuss and John Meneau, were called to the scene said no inquest would be held. Death of Mr. Bruss brought to 18 the number of traffic deaths in the county in 1948. Coroner Teitgen said that Mr. Bruss had been at the Twentieth Century tavern, on highway 141, a short distance southeast of Denmark, and telephoned friends at Kornelys tavern in Maribel he was leaving to join them. When he failed to arrive they set out in a car, driving north on the town highway. At a spot only 400 feet inside the county line they found the Bruss automobile with the owner pinned beneath it. The traffic officers reported that track marks indicated the car had skidded off the highway and that Mr. Bruss brought it back up but it went over into the ditch on the other side and overturned. Mr. Bruss was thrown out of the driver’s seat but his foot jammed in the open door. Funeral services for Mr. Bruss will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday to the Trinity Lutheran church, Denmark, with interment in Evergreen cemetery in this city. He was born in Maribel, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Bruss. In recent years, in partnership with his father, he had operated the Maribel Gravel company. In 1930 he married Miss Blanche Swetlik.
