EVERGREEN CEMETERY OBITUARIES

EDWIN C. BUSCH LINEMAN LOSES LIFE WHILE AT WORK ON A POLE Edward C. Busch(sic), aged 24 of Manitowoc Rapids, employed as a lineman by the Wisconsin Public Service Corporation, died suddenly Monday morning while he was working at the top of a pole north of the power plant at Little Manitowoc. The body was lowered to the ground and three hours were spent in an ineffectual attempt at resusitation. No burns being found on his body, the man is believed to have died from a heart attack. With Robert Grimmer of Green Bay, Busch had climbed the pole and started to cut in a new safety device on the power line outside of the plant. Grimmer heard a ?? and looking up saw Busch hanging limp on his belt. He called for assistance and fellow workmen climbed the pole and Busch's body was lowered to the ground. In order to determine whether the death was due to natural or accidental causes, Coroner W.G. Kemper of Manitowoc, order an inquest. Mr. Busch had been employed by the Wisconsin Public Service for some time and was considered to be a very efficient employee in the department. He was a member of Manitowoc Masonic Lodge and the funeral will be in charge of the Masons. Sheboygan Press, Tues., July 27, 1926 page 5 ********* That Edwin Busch(sic), Wisconsin Public Service lineman, who was killed two weeks ago while at work at the top of a pole near the company's power house, met death from electrocution; is the verdict of a coroner's jury at Manitowoc, deciding Monday after an inquest. CHARLES BUSS (d. 1928) STRICKEN AS WAS ABOUT TO ARISE FOR DAY Carl (sic) H. Buss Dies Suddenly At Home on South Eleventh Street This Morning Stricken as he was about to arise at an early hour this morning at his home, 1307 South Eleventh, Carl H. Buss, 62, pioneer south side resident who has lived in Manitowoc for over fifty years, died before his wife could summon medical aid. Mr. Buss although subject to heart attacks had been at his work at the Schuette Bros. store daily, and returned from work last night, apparently in the best of health. Mrs. Buss said that her husband found difficulty in breathing early this morning and by the time she was able to summon aid, had passed away. The deceased was born in Germany in 1866 and came to America with his parents, when eight years of age. The family settled in this city. Injured in Accident Mr. Buss was married to Miss Caroline Ostermann of this city, thirty-two years ago, who with one son, Edwin, a step-sister, Mrs. Holdorf of Liberty and a step-brother, John Brodtke, of Cato, survive. For over twenty years he was employed as a drayman at the Schuette Bros. Co., warehouse on Jay street, and retired for a time, but later returned to again enter the employ of the same company. He was injured in an automobile accident a few months ago, when he was run down at a street intersection, but although suffering heart attacks at that time, recovered and was apparently enjoying good health again. Funeral services will take place Saturday afternoon at 1:30 from the home and at two o’clock from the German Lutheran church, with interment at Evergreen. Manitowoc Herald News, October 17, 1928 P. 2 ******* HEAVY WAGON SAVED HIS LIFE Charles Buss With Team Caught Between Cars at Rahr Son's Plant VEHICLE WITHSTANDS JAR Workmen Nearby Rescue Imprisoned Man Who is Pinioned Fast in Debris. One Arm Badly Crushed That Charles Buss, a teamster in the employ of Schuette Bros. Company, was not crushed to pulp on Wednesday was due rather to the substantiality of the vehicle which he was riding in than to any other cause. The driver was just crossing the spar track which runs alongside the William Rahr's Sons Company plant late in the afternoon and was not aware of a swiftly approaching train of cars that bore rapidly down on him just as the wagon directly on the tracks and when he did see his danger, it was too late to get out of harm's way. Caught between the moving train and a single loaded car which was standing on the track and was to be added to the string. Buss' wagon was overturned and crushed to fragments by being jammed between the two cars and in an attempt to save himself, the driver was severely injured,, one arm having been badly bruised and lacerated. The accident to the teamster was due to an instinctive movement in throwing out an arm to warn off the danger. The member was caught and pinioned and it was remarkable coincidence that not a bone was broken. Workmen in the wash house of Rahr Son's Company immediately came to the assistance of the imprisoned man and with the use of crow bars a space of sufficient space was pried to allow the man to be lifted out. Aside from the bruised arm and several cuts about the body, Mr. Bruss sustained no further injury and this fact is due to the strength of the heavy grain wagon in withstanding the shock of the impact. HUGO F. BUTZ Three Local Men Killed as Auto Crashes Freight Train Fourth Is Seriously Injured In Accident At Bellevue, Brown County Three Manitowoc men lost their lives and a fourth was seriously injured early this morning in an automobile-freight collision at Bellevue, Brown county, as they were returning from a district meeting of the Eagles at Green Bay. Hugo Butz, 54, of 1212 South 16th street, prominent in Eagles activities, employe of the city street department. John Daron, 53, of 1601 Washington street, for 27 years the inner guard of the Eagles aerie here, employed at the Kingsbury Breweries company. Walter J. Novak, 50, of 1013 South 23rd street, employe of the Aluminum Goods Manufacturing company. Injured: Henry Vogt, 32, of 1912 South 14th street, owner of the car, who suffered a fractured leg and possible internal injuries. Butz and Novak were almost instantly killed. Daron died shortly after 9 a.m. today in a Green Bay hospital. Vogt is expected to live, physicians said. Butz, Vogt and Daron were members of the Eagles degree team which took part last night in a district meeting held in Green Bay in honor of John A. Abel, national president of the Eagles. William Kustka, 1112 Manila street, also a member of the degree team, was to drive to the meeting with Vogt but at the last moment made other arrangements and so escaped the accident. At 1:50 A.M. The crash occurred at the railroad crossing in Bellevue on Highway 141 at 1:50 this morning when the car smashed into the front end of a Chicago and North Western freight engine as the train was pulling from a siding onto the main track on its way to Green Bay. Engineer Joe Petroski, pilot of the freight train, said he saw the automobile approaching the crossing when it was a block away. He set his whistle and emergency brakes, he said, and the train stopped almost as the crash occurred. The car crashed into the front end of the locomotive, bending the cow-catcher. The front of the automobile was telescoped, and the motor completely crushed and pushed into the front seat. The freight train, No. 169, had been waiting on the siding for No. 212. The freight was late on its northen run because it was held up in Manitowoc waiting for a ferry. As the machine hit the train Vogt, who apparently was driving, was thrown out the left side of the car and under the train. Wheels of the train, however, did not pass over him. Daron was thrown out on the pavement on the right side of the car. Inquest Planned Butz and Novak were in the back seat when authorities arrived. Both were apparently living when they were taken from the car but were pronounced dead upon entry to a Green Bay hospital. Daron, who suffered critical head and internal injuries, was given little chance to live when doctors examined him and died several hours later. "The car appeared to pick up speed between the point where I first saw it, coming around a curve, and the railroad crossing." Engineer Petroski told authorities. "It hit the right front corner of the locomotive." The car was against the train, facing south, as the freight came to a stop. Coroner Orlan Miller of Brown county, said he was making plans for an inquest into the cause of the three deaths. The tragedy early today is not to interfere with the Eagles meeting at the clubrooms tonight, according to President William Kustka. The speaker will be John A. Abel of Marion, Ohio, grand worthy president of the order, who spoke last night at Green Bay. The meeting will be confined, however, to the speaking program. Butz Rites Saturday Hugo Buts, 54, a past worthy president of the Manitowoc aerie of Eagles, was born in this city in 1885, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Engel- (Continued on Page 18, Col. 5) (Continued from Page 1) bert Butz, and always resided here with the exception of two years spent at Grand Rapids, Mich. When the plant moved to Michigan he went to Grand Rapids and remained two years when he returned to Manitowoc. In recent years he has been employed with the Manitowoc Street Department. In addition to serving as former president of the Eagles he was a member of the degree team of the order and was recording secretary of the Catholic Order of Foresters. ROSS F. BYLE Ross Byle Killed By Stray Bullet Ex-Serviceman Dies As .22 Slug Enters Body Above Heart Ross Byle, of 1912 Western avenue, recently returned from the armed services, was killed accidentally Sunday afternoon, when struck by a stray bullet at Manitowoc Rapids. A .22 caliber bullet struck Byle near the heart as he walked along the ___ ___ with a companion, ___ Cheever, 17, of 820 Marshall Street. According to Sheriff Arthur Tueschel and Coroner Theodore Teitgen, who were summoned, Byle was struck by a rifle bullet possibly fired by some hunter a ___ from the scene of the accident. The bullet penetrated his left breast and above the heart. Byle and Cheever had left the city for a hunting trip shortly after dinner Sunday. According to Cheever they were crossing the river on the ice just north of the first bridge entering Rapids from Manitowoc. Cheever said he had ____ started to climb the steep bank on the east side of the river when he heard a call from Byle. “I’ve Been Hit.” “Come back down here. I’ve been hit,” Byle shouted. His companion turned and hurried back just as Byle collapsed after already reaching the shoreline at the river. Mary Pollack, of 2511 Woll_ st. who with several girl companions had been in the woods ___ ___ hurried to the scene and ___ ran to a telephone in the village to summon help. Byle was dead before the arrival of a physician. Miss Pollock told Coroner Teitgen that there had been rifle firing in the hills about the Rapids most of the afternoon and she and her friends were ready to start back for home to get out of the range zone, when the Byle tragedy occurred. Had Misgivings Cheever told county authorities after the accident that Byle expressed misgivings about the hunting trip before they left. He said the woods would probably be full of boys and young men out hunting but finally decided to make the trip. On the way, Cheever told the sheriff they saw other youths also bound to the woods west of the city, armed with rifles. The authorities found no one on the hill above the river after the accident. Coroner Teitgen said today that there will be no inquest unless developments bring out the person who may have fired the fatal shot. Funeral services for Ross Byle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Felix Byle, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Urbanek and Schlei funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
