BERTHA CARUS Items From The Pilot Files - Twenty-Five Years Ago (1887) Bertha Carus of this city died on Thursday evening of last week of diphtheria. The case is indeed a sad one. She contracted the disease while caring for her brother's child, the little one having been left motherless by the dread disease. Bertha was 18 years of age at the time of her death and was a girl of rich mental endowments. She was preparing to become a teacher and few have worked to better purpose. CAPT. EDWARD CARUS Capt. Edward Carus, veteran Great Lakes Skipper, Is Dead Suffers Stroke While Resting at His Home Capt. Edward Carus, 87, veteran Great Lakes skipper who began his sailing days back in 1874 died Friday night as Manitowoc opened its marine centennial, marking the 100th anniversary of the construction of the first sailing vessel here. Captain Carus suffered a stroke as he sat in a chair in the yard of his home at 1209 Franklin street Friday afternoon and died a few hours later. A prolific writer in the years when he retired from sailing, Capatin Carus authored a series of articles on early day shipping which appeared in the Herald-Times and other newspapers. During his years on the lakes and following his retirement he ????red a fine collection of marine pictures which covered several volumes and was regarded as one of the most accurate and complete collections of marine data in the country. He also collected many marine ????ous which he turned over to the museum of the County Historical society. Pens His Own 'Log' Masonic funeral rites for Capatain Carus will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Masonic Temple, with the Rev. F.C. St. Clair of the St. James church officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Mindful of the newspaper man's search for data, Captain Carus a few years ago penned out a story of his activities which he captioned the "Log of Capt. Edward Carus." Captain Carus in 1935 completed a chronological record of disasters of lake vessels from 1900 to 1935, with statistics on several hundred ships, which was the culmination of years of study and research. Assisting him in his work was his wife, Mary. His marine album collection, which he disposed of in 1939, contained over 2,000 photographs. He took this step to get some rest from the constant flow of visitors to his home to check on marine matters. He carried his marine life right into his home following his retirement from the lakes. Over his study in the rear of his home, was a large sign "Pilot House." 'Shipped Out' at 14 Born in this city in 1860 Captain Carus early turned to the lakes. When only 14 years of age he shipped on the schooners L?na and Mariner and the following year was a member of the crew of the schooner Sea Gem. In 1878 he shipped as a watchman aboard the steamer Oconto and that fall went to New York by way of the Erie canal and joined the crew of the steamer Crescent City for a trip to West Indies. The following spring he returned to the Great Lakes. In the spring of 1881 he went out as second mate of the steamer Menominee and later was on the steamer DePere. The next three seasons he was mate on the Corona trading between Manitowoc and Menominee, Mich., and to 1887 was mate of the Joseph L. Hurd, trading from Chicago to Lake Superior ports. In 1863 Captain Carus shipped as first officer of the steamer Eastland, which capsized in the Chicago river in 1915 with a loss of 815 excursionists. He was captain down through the years of the following steamers: George A Marsh, North Star, Nellie, Hunter, Corona, Sheboygan, City of Ludington, Georgia, Badger State, Empire State, Easton Soo (Continured on Page 2, col.6) CAPTAIN CARUS DIES FRIDAY (Continued from Page 1) City, George Burnham. He was skipper of many steamers of the Goodrich Transit company plying the west shore of Lake Michigan from Chicago to Manitowoc. Collected Marine Data During World War I he was employment agent at the Manitowoc Ship Building company and took many of the cargo ships built at the yards to the Atlantic seaboard. He took all the ships on their trial runs before they cleared the coast. He remained with the yards until 1930, when he retired, but at times skippered the Buccaneer, a yacht owned by President Charles West of the Ship building company. His active sailing days over, Captain Carus did not allow his interests in marine matters to lag. He continued his album collections of pictures, and with his typewriter before him in a little study at his home, wrote amny interesting stories, illustrated with pictures, of lake marine disasters. His wealth of knowledge of lake data, brought him many visitors form other cities who checked through his collection with great interest. He was active in Masonic circles and was honored with a 50-year certificate of the order several years ago. Captain Carus married Miss Mary Bahr in 1890. She died in 1945. There are no immediate survivors. The body may be viewed at the Frazier mortuary after 2 p.m. Sunday and will be moved to the Masonic Temple Monday morning to lie in state until the hour of the services. Manitowoc Herald Times, Saturday, August 16, 1947 P.1 and 2 ******* [died 08-16-1947/age 87 yrs/bur. on John G. Bahr lot] ******* (By Capt. Edward Carus) The above picture, taken of the lower harbor here in 1887, was a common one in the local harbor in the seventies and eighties, with vessels in the harbor loaded with forest products from Wisconsin enroute to the Chicago and Milwaukee market. These vessels, encountering strong head winds put into the harbor here for shelter. As soon as the wind shifted they all got under way for their destination. The vessel lying broadside in the harbor was the Mediterranean. A few years before, on Sunday, June 22, 1871, this same vessel arrived here from Buffalo, New York, with a locomotive on her deck. This locomotive came here by water as did most of the inhabitants in those days. Since the railroad has been built many people who were born in Manitowoc and died here of old age were never out on the lake, but every year people from the south and west come to the lakes purposely to make a trip on the water. The locomotive which came on the vessel was named "Ben Jones" in honor of Manitowoc's foremost citizen of that time. It was a great day for Manitowoc, the whole town turned out and lined the docks at North Sixth street where the vessel was lying. The next day the vessel was towed up river into the corner near the ship yard gate. Then the locomotive was jacked and blocked up, rails were placed on the schooner's rail leading to the yards and the Ben Jones was eased off into the railroad yards. In the picture may be seen the old wooden Eight street bridge with the hog trusses to strengthen it. This bridge was replaced about 1890 by an iron swing bridge and again a few years ago with the present one. East of the bridge may be seen the old city elevator built by subscription and sold to the William Rahr's Sons Co., and moved to their plant. Manitowoc Herald Times, Monday, May 2, 1932 P.6 NOTE: This article under the picture in the paper. ********* ABOUT TO END HIS CAREER ON LAKES WHEN INJURED On the day he planned to end his service as a captain on the lakes to engage in business here to be near his family and while engaged in assisting in fitting out the steamer, Burnham, from which he was to retire, Captain Ed. Carus was seriously injured Sunday morning. Captain Carus sustained a compound fracture of the leg below the knee when he fell from a ladder, a rung of which broke. The bone protruded from the flesh and it was feared at first that Captain Carus had been fatally hurt. He was removed to his home where he will be confined for some time. Captain Carus had retired from the Burnham but at request of the owners was assisting in fitting out the boat ready for departure when the mishap occurred. Manitowoc Daily Herald, June 1, 1914 page 8

ELIZABETH V. CARY DAUGHTER OF DR. AND MRS. E.C. CARY IS DEAD Ill one week but with her condition causing no alarm, the news of the death of Elizabeth Virginia Cary, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. E. C. Cary, at the family home at Reedsville at 9 o’clock last evening came as a shock to friends and relatives in the county. The child was taken ill with pneumonia a week ago and her condition up until yesterday afternoon gave no reason to cause alarm but suddenly came a turn for the worse and she passed away last night. The funeral will be held Saturday morning with services at St. Mary’s Catholic church at Reedsville at 9 o’clock, Rev. Grace of Maple Grove officiating and burial will be at Evergreen cemetery in this city. Born at Reedsville September 13, 1914 Elizabeth Cary was thirteen at her last birthday. She was a most popular and active little child, being interested in both school and outdoor activities. A member of the eighth grade with high marks she was planning on the high school for next fall. She was also greatly interested in music and had been assigned an important role in a concert which was to be given shortly by the Sisters of St. Mary’s school at Reedsville. She was also a member of the Girl Scouts Troop of Sacred Heart church of this city and attended the meeting regularly. She was a charter member of the Legion Auxiliary at Reedsville. Besides her parents, Dr. and Mrs. E.C. Cary, she is survived by one brother, John and the two had been pals in every sense that the word implies. The death is a sad blow and the many friends of the family extend their sympathy. Manitowoc Herald News, Thursday, February 09, 1928, Page 2 ********* Death’s Call “With silence only as their benediction, God’s angels come, Where, in the shadow of a great affliction, The soul sits dumb.” The above lines from Whittler’s poems was brought forcibly home when after a brief illness of but six days, Elizabeth, only daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Cary, was called from a happy home where her sunny, cheerful ways had shed radiance for the thirteen years that God saw fit to leave her on earthly scenes. Everyone’s friend, a smile and hearty greeting for young and old, words cannot depict the gloom that her passing has cast on her family, relatives and friends who can scarcely realize that her voice no more will greet them in life’s journey but although gone from our midst- “The charm of her virtues, as Heaven’s own breath, Shall rise like an incense from darkness and death.” Her funeral which was held Saturday from St. Mary’s Catholic church Reedsville, with interment in Evergreen cemetery, Manitowoc, was attended by friends and relatives from far and near, many being unable to get into the church for the solemn services of the requiem high mass celebrated by Rev. Fathers W.H. Grace, Maple Grove, Rev. Edward Wagner, Oshkosh, and Rev. Koblinski, Reedsville. Floral tributes beautiful beyond description attested to the high esteem in which although but a child, she was held in the hearts of those who knew her during her lifetime. Dr. and Mrs. Theodore Schulte, of Milwaukee, Miss Josephine Schulte of Kenosha, and Fred Schmidt of Kenosha who were here to attend the funeral returned to their homes Sunday afternoon. Wednesday, September 8, 1948 p.2 ******** CAREY SERVED WITH TANK CORPS OF U.S. ARMY Local Boy Home from Overseas Tells of Thrills of Service in Operating Tanks in Battle Sergt. William Carey(sic) of the U.S. Tank Corps, attached to the 365th? Brigade which when the armistice was signed, was preparing to get into action near Metz in the big drive that the allied forces had planned against that German stronghold, is home from overseas and is visiting with his mother, Mrs. C.A. Carey, on North Fifth street. Sergt. Carey, although glad to be home and happy that the war is ended says that the boys on the Metz front were not particularly rejoiced with the news of the armistice and the ending of hostilities because they had expected a chance against the enemy and were under orders to proceed against Metz. The real celebration took place about two miles behind the front line says Sergt. Carey. Although Sergt. Carey did not get into the line he experienced many of the thrills of tank corps action in his training abroad and witnessed the horrors of modern warfare which he declares are indescribable. Sergt. Carey enlisted at Chicago in April last year and crossed in June ? training at Camp Colt, Gettysburg, Pa. He landed at Brest and later reached the Metz sector where he was about to be sent into action when orders to cease hostilities were received. Sergt. Carey says that there were 1,800 men in a brigade of the tank corps with two light and one heavy machine battalion. There are 15 light tanks to a company and two men to a tank while for the heavy tank company there are five tanks and twelve to sixteen men to a machine, officered by a captain, two sergeants and four corporals. Sergt. Carey being attached to one of the heavy tank companies. His command was at St. Mihiel and at Argonne. That a drive was launched against the Germans only an hour before the signing of the armistice with heavy loss to the allied forces, is a statement made by Sergt. Carey, who apparently had little time for the British who ? says, had most of their fighting done for them by Canadian and Australian troops, the British regulars being held in reserve. He referred to one drive in which the American troops were sent over first, followed by the Canadians and Australians with the British making the clean up of prisoners after the other forces had whipped the enemy. Sergt. Carey is enthusiastic in his praise of the French officers and soldiers, “real fighters with ? courage and determination” as Carey described them. Sergt. Carey told of meeting Lieut. B. P. Herzog when he entered a restaurant at Iss Urr Tiel where Herzog was seated eating a lunch. “Believe me there was something stirring about that place just then and Pete and I sure did enjoy our little time.” He said that Lieut. Herzog had been injured twice in the service overseas and was at that time on his way to Paris and had been recommended for a distinguished service (illegible.) One of the pleasant incidents enjoyed by Sergt. Carey was a three weeks furlough during which he visited Nice, Monte Carlo and other points of interest. At Monte Carlo he had the pleasure of a personal meeting with Charles M. Schwab the ? magnate who he says was very popular with the American soldier boys, many of whom were gathered at Monte Carlo. Sergt. Carey met Reuben Nyhagen of this city, at Chicago on his way home. Nyhagen was attached to the 306th brigade, U.S. Tank Corps. Mr. Carey understands that he was in active service and participated in at least two of the big drives. Nyhagen is expected home within a few days.
