ALMIRA CHAMPLIN Champlin - On Tuesday the fourth inst., at the residence of her daughters, Mrs. Almira Champlin, in the 78th year of her age. Deceased was a native of Vermont and emigrated to this county in 1843. Funeral from the house today. Friends of the family are invited to attend. Manitowoc Pilot, July 6, 1876 ******** Another Pioneer Gone With the sincere regret which always accompanies the death of an estimable person, we announce the decease on the night of the 4th of July, of Mrs. Almira Champlain, mother of Mrs. P.P. Smith and Mrs. W. B. Jones. This lady was born in Fairfield, Vermont in 1797 and came to this city, then, an almost unbroken wilderness, in 1843 being one of the very first settlers, her husband, Mr. H.H. Champlain, having come here the year previous and purchased the Conroe Lumber mills near what is now the village of Clarks Mills. She had been an invalid for the past thirty-five years, was a kind- hearted, patient and truly Christian lady, had a very retentive memory and being a great reader, her mind was stored with information of so extensive a character that she was entertaining in conversation and a favorite among all. The immediate cause of her death was disease of the brain. Her decease although, at her age, not unlooked for, has been a terrible blow to those nearest and dearest to her and we take pleasure in assuring them that the sympathies of a large circle of sincere friends are tendered them and that they are not alone in their sorrow -- for every one who had the pleasure of Mrs. Champlain's acquaintance feel that the mantle of death has fallen over one who during life might well be held up for emulation as embracing all those qualities which go to make mankind what it should be. Peace to her ashes. Manitowoc Tribune, Thurs., July 6, 1876

HIRAM HYDE CHAMPLIN (b. 1798) Hiram H. Champlin, former owner of the Thayersburg Mill property, has been absent something over a year, during which nothing has been heard of him. The circumstances of his leaving are as follows: Between the 20th and 28 of November, 1853, having sold his interest in the mill, and disposed of some personal estate, he left the residence of Charles H. Champlin, in Maple Grove, where he had been temporarily staying, with the avowed intention of going through Calumet and Fond du Lac Counties, for the purpose of purchasing cattle for logging. He had in his possession and secured in a belt around his person, about eight hundred dollars - four hundred in gold, and the balance in paper money. He left in the morning after the usual breakfast hour, and proceeded in a westerly or south-westerly direction, and reached the Shanty - erected by himself and Mr. Delano, for the purpose of boarding hands who were to be employed by them in logging - about noon. Here he found Mr. Delano alone, who prepared him some dinner, and at his request accompanied him to the river - about half a mile distant - and conveyed him across the river in a canoe, where the two separated, Mr. Champlin with the intention of going to Stauntonville, in Calumet County that day. Since then he has never been heard of, nor have his friends, by communicating with persons in various parts of the country where there was a possibility of his having gone, been able to obtain the remotest idea of his whereabouts.Mr. Champlin was somewhat above the ordinary height, very stoutly built and well proportioned. His weight was about two hundred and ten pounds. The expression of his countenance was mild and pleasant and his manners were quiet and unassuming. His complexion was florid, and his hair was thin and gray and worn in a braid to cover a bald place on the top of his hair. His age was about 55 years. Any person having any information that would interest his friends, will have the kindness to communicate with his wife, Mrs. Elmira Champlin of Manitowoc. JOSEPH CHAPMAN FLOATER FROM RIVER Missing Shipkeeper of Str. Italia, Disappeared Feb. 28, is Dead. BODY IN WATER TWO MONTHS Inquest Decides Accidental Death-Identified by Receipts on Body-Joseph Chapman Another "floater" was taken from the river this morning, identified as the body of Joseph Chapman, the missing shipkeeper of the steamer Italia of the Corrigan fleet, who disappeared February 28. Identification was completed through a receipt found upon the body and the inquest held over the remains found a verdict of death by accidental drowning. The body is at the undertaking rooms of Vogelsang & Murphy and will be held awaiting directions from relatives of the dead man at Cleveland, Ohio, his former home. Chapman had been in the city several weeks and had been in charge of the Italia, which was in winter quarters here. He was last seen on the evening of February 28 when he cashed a check of $29 at Scheutte Bros. Co.'s, store and settled some small accounts for the boat and himself. His disappearance was reported to the police a few days following and from investigations conducted it was thought the man was in Cleveland, Ohio and the search for him was given up. Nothing further was heard of Chapman until at an early hour this morning when Chas. Foerstenberger reported to the police that the body of a man had been turned up by the carferry Pere Marquette near the Schoch dock. Officers immediately recovered the corpse and the inquest was summoned by coronary Meany. Physicians who examined the body gave it as their opinion that the man had been in the river several weeks and this first suggested the possibility that the remains were those of Chapman. No marks of violence appeared on the body and it was but slightly disfigured. A heavy overcoat closely buttoned about the chin encased the body which was fully dressed. Ten dollars in bills and a number of papers were found on the remains. Frank Gehbe, proprietor of the Two Rivers House, who is acquainted with Chapman, through the frequent visits which the man had made at the hotel, completed the positive identification. Chapman was 38 years of age and hailed from Cleveland, Ohio. He is not known to have any immediate family. Unless friends take charge of the body it will be buried at the expense of the county. LADISLAUS CHERNEY Cherney Retires As Engineer at Kingsbury Plant After serving 33 years as engineer at the Kingsbury Breweries Co. rotund, jovial Logic Cherney, 67, 1413 South 11th street, retired this week just to "take it easy." Last evening he was guest of the "boys" at Reifs Mills, and Cherney's face flushed with pride when the gang presented him with a big overstuffed armchair as a retirement gift. High tribute was paid to Kingsbury's chief engineer by President E.C. Badger of the company when he told the gathering that Cherney had never failed at his tasks. He should be called "Mr. Fix It," Mr. Badger suggested. Cherney was born and reared near Mishicot, and when he was 14 years old went to work as a brewer for the old Mishicot Brewing Co., since dissolved. When the Spanish-American war broke out in 1898, Cherney showed that he had the blood of a soldier running through his veins. He enlisted. Following his release from service around the turn of the century, Cherney went to work as a salesman for the Smalley Manufacturing Co. of Manitowoc, but in 1912 he returned to the brewery business as an engineer. Cherney Was Retained He started working at the Schreihart Brewery Co. of Manitowoc then located at 10th and Washington streets. In 1918, the Schreihart Co. and Manitowoc's two other breweries, the Kunz-Bleser Co. and the Rahr Brewery Co., consolidated under the Manitowoc Products Co. and Cherney was retained in the consolidation. In the early '30's the Manitowoc Products Co. changed its name to Kingsbury Breweries. And then near-beer went out of existence when Roosevelt was elected in 1932, and Cherney was back in his old trade-making good beer. Cherney and his wife, Anna, live alone at their home on South 11th street. He said he has been married 45 years and in five years he and his wife will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. Always Had A Joke His son, Roland, has been a fireman at Kingsburys the past 13 years, and his daughter is now Mrs. Alex Baltos of Manitowoc. All the gang knows Cherney as a good-natured Mr. Fix It who has never let them down. He worked hard and he had a sense of humor, fellow workers said. When the going was difficult, Cherney would sweat and become flushed in the face, but he could always come up with a joke about the situation, the gang said. King Cole, sales manager at Kingsburys, started off the singing, following the dinner, and everyone joined in with the old fashioned songs so popular in Cherney's day. JOSEPH CHLOUPEK JOSEPH CHLOUPEK, COUNTY PIONEER, DIES AT AGE OF 84 Bite of Dog Last May Hastened Death of Father of Judge John Chloupek Which Occurred Today Joseph Chloupek, father of County Judge John Chloupek, and one of the pioneer settlers of Manitowoc county, died at the hospital early today, aged 84 years. Mr. Chloupek had been at the hospital only since Saturday evening, having expressed a desire to be taken there after he had had been taken down town to visit a barber shop. Sunday morning, when members of the family visited him, he was unable to recognize them and during the day failed rapidly and passed away at 7 this morning. Mr. Chloupek's death is believed to have been hastened by the shock he suffered last May when he was attacked and bitten by a dog. Since the time he had been failing and during the past month or six weeks he had been confined to the house. Born at Guttenberg, Bohemia, Feb. 2, 1832, Mr. Chloupek was past 84 years of age. He came to America in 1848 and in 1849, with his parents, located on a farm at Francis Creek. For years he made his home in Kossuth where he was a power in politics, the present judge organizing the young men of the town in a contest for supremacy and winning. Though he wielded an influence in politics of the county, Mr. Chloupek had never sought office and the only position he ever held was that of town treasurer of Kossuth. In 1901, Mr. Chloupek retired from the farm and with his wife removed to this city, taking up their home on Michigan avenue. Mrs. Chloupek died seven years ago, since which time he had made his home with his son. Up to a short time ago Mr. Chloupek was active but for two months or more he had been unable to be about. Mr. Chloupek is survived by four sons and two daughters, Dr. Charles Chloupek, Green Bay; Erwin and Edward of San Francisco; John Chloupek of this city, Mr. John Braun, Two Rivers and Mrs. Kumbalek of Chicago. Decedent was the last of a family of seven brothers and one of the early settlers of Kossuth which had been his home for so many years. Mr. Chloupek was a member of the Masonic order and it is said that the Chloupek family was the first, with father and son members, to have a grandson initiated a member of the order, decedent and his son, John, having been present when the latter's son, Eugene Chloupek, became a member of the local lodge. Funeral services will be held from the home of John Chloupek Wednesday afternoon and will be under auspices of the Masonic lodge. JULIA CHLOUPEK (d. 1930) MRS. CHLOUPEK, WIFE OF JUDGE, DIES AT HOME Brief Illness Follows in Death to Shock Friends in City; Was a Life-long Resident A heart ailment which had confined her to her bed for the past ten days, shortly after 1 o'clock this afternoon claimed the life of Mrs. John Chloupek, wife of Probate Judge John Chloupek. Death occurred at the family home at 1502 Michigan avenue. News of the death of Mrs. Chloupek, one of the most beloved of women and a pioneer of the county, came as a shock to the entire city as many were unaware of her illness. The end came suddenly as her condition was not regarded as serious this morning. With her at the time of her death was her husband, Judge Chloupek who himself is slowly recovering from an attack of illness which he suffered many months ago and which has at times confined him to his home. Was 67 years of Age Mrs. Chloupek was born in Manitowoc about 67 years ago and was Julia Bressler, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bressler, prior to her marriage to John Chloupek on May 16, 1888. Her entire lifetime was spent in the city and county of Manitowoc where she enjoyed a wide circle of friends, all of whom regarded her with an unusual degree of respect and affection. To them and to many others of the city she was "Mother" Chloupek and her kindly sympathetic nature made her welcome wherever she went. Primarily interested in her home and family, she was the mother of four children, Eugene at Evanston, Ill., Frank at Dallas, Texas, Roland at Milwaukee and Mrs. Al Goedgen at Green Bay. Ten grandchildren also survive. Funeral arrangements have not been completed but will be announced tomorrow. JULIA CHLOUPEK (bur. 1876) When entering the obit for Elizabeth Prohaszka and consulting with the cemetery office, this was discovered: Also buried on that lot (supposedly on the same day 7/10/1876) is a Julia Chloupek. The burial register only has buried Mrs. Stupelzky? Friend. So, if Mrs. Prohaszka was the friend buried on 7/10/1876, then perhaps Julia Chloupek was not really buried on that day. Perhaps the records for the two women got mixed up. I have a Julia Chloupek buried in section K in 1930, but I'm not sure it would be the same one. There was some connection between the families, because I found this on the site in the Edwards Directory: 'Prochazka & Chloupek (Anton Prochazka and Emanuel Chloupek), machinists, 9th, cor. Chicago".
