EMIL DUFEK Emil Dufek is killed in collision A member of The Herald Times Reporter Advertising Dept. was killed here Friday morning in an accident involving his station wagon and a milk tanker truck. The victim was identified as Emil R. Dufek, 58, of 2611 Marshall St., Manitowoc. He was pronounced dead at the scene of crushing injuries. The truck driver, who was not identified, was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Leroy Hughes, Calumet County coroner, provided this account of the accident: One or two cars were traveling ahead of the White Clover Dairy tanker truck in a westbound direction on Highway 10-57 at the west end of a railroad overhead shortly before 10 a.m. The lead car attempted a left turn onto Highway 57. The driver of the tanker truck pulled to the right to pass the slowed down cars. Dufek was traveling behind the tanker and tried to pass on the left side when the truck operator pulled to the right. The Dufek apparently cut back in front of the tanker. The tanker hit Dufek's station wagon and pushed it into the ditch in the northwest corner of the intersection. The tanker truck then rolled over the top of the station wagon and came to rest beyond it in an upside down condition. Dufek's body was taken to Wieting Funeral Home in Brillion and was transferred later to Urbanek & Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc. (snip/traffic stats) Dufek, who was married and the father of three grown children joined the newspaper advertising department in November of 1953. Prior to that, he managed Manitowoc Circulators wholesale distributor of newspapers and Magazines for 10 years. Dufek practically grew up in the newspaper business, starting at the age of nine as a carrier boy for local and national publications. He and his wife, Rita, had operated a real estate business. HERMAN DUMKE (d. 1890) A FATAL ACCIDENT A Revolver's Deadly Work A special from Manitowoc on Monday conveyed the intelligence of the shooting of Herman Dumke, on Sunday evening, by the accidental discharge of a revolver in the overcoat pocket of his cousin, Ernst Dumke of this city. The bullet struck the unfortunate man in the abdomen. Doctors were immediately summoned and the bullet probed for, but it could not be found. Dr. Senn, of Milwaukee was sent for, but upon his arrival and examining the wounded man he pronounced the case fatal. Mr. Dumke died Monday morning. A Times reporter called at the home of the Dumke's in this city and learned the following in relation to the sad accident; Mr. Ernst Dumke, in company with other relatives of this city was called to Manitowoc to attended the funeral of his aunt, the mother of the person who was shot. Previous to his departure Mr. Dumke drew out of the bank here, $1,400.00 which he intended to place at Manitowoc if he could make the necessary arrangements. Not wishing to carry so much money on his person, without some protection, he placed a thirty-eight caliber revolver in his overcoat pocket. He called on Sunday evening at the millinery store of his cousin in that city and took off his overcoat containing the revolver and laid it on the table. Shortly afterwards his cousin, Herman, picked up the coat and mistaking it for his own and discovering his mistake threw it on the table again, it striking in some unaccountable manner, discharging the revolver. The unfortunate accident is greatly deplored, by all acquainted with the family and relatives of the person who lost his life. The deceased was the proprietor of the Northwestern Vinegar Works at St. Paul. Mr. Chas, Kroesing of this city went to St. Paul to take charge of the works until the affairs can be settled up. Chilton Times - December 13, 1890 ******** ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING. Herman Dumke of Minneapolis was accidentally shot in this city on Sunday evening last. He came here to attend the funeral of his mother who was burned on Saturday. On Sunday evening he intended to walk out and proceeded to pick up from a table an overcoat which he suppose was his. On discovering that the coat belonged to his cousin he threw it back on the table, when a self-cocking revolver which was in one of the pockets was discharged and the bullet struck him square in the body in the region of the stomach. Doctors Pritchard, Luhmann and Kemper were called in and made an examination. They concluded that the stomach or intestines were not injured but also were satisfied that the wound is an extremely dangerous one. The revolver is a 38 caliber Smith & Wesson. Ernst Dumke, in whose pocket it was had brought a quantity of money to deposit in a Manitowoc bank and put the revolver in his pocket as a matter of security because of the money in his possession. He had made some improvments in the hammer so as to remove, as he thought, all possibility of accidental discharge. The injured man is about 42 years of age, married and was at one time a resident of Manitowoc where many of his friends reside. For a number of years he has traveled for a Milwaukee house and was well known in this seciton of the state. Dr. Senn of Milwaukee was sent for and reached the city on Mondy. He at once pronounced the wound fatal and the injured man died that night. His funeral took place to-day. A special messenger was sent to St. Paul to notify his wife. ALEX M.G. DUSOLD Alex Dusold, Pioneer Printer of Manitowoc Dies Today at Age 71 Resident of Manitowoc All His Life; Rites Here On Monday Alex M.G. Dusold, 74, pioneer printer and former publisher of the Manitowoc ________weekly newspaper printed in the German language died at Holy Family hospital at 10 a.m. today. Mr. Dusold had been confined to the hospital for two and one-half weeks. He was in bed only one day prior to that although he had not been in the best of health. He was a sufferer from heart disease. In spite of rather poor health, Mr. Dusold continued in active charge of his job printing business at 928 South Ninth street until a day before he went to the hospital. His condition had been somewhat improved recently but took a change for the worse early today. Mr. Dusold was a life-long resident of Manitowoc. He was born here March 18, 1861. As a boy of 13 he began his apprenticeship in the printing trade. He obtained employment with the Norwesten, German newspaper, and was so employed when he married Miss Emily Krause at Mishicot Sept. 18, 1881. He became affiliated with Otto H. Schmidt in the publication of the Wahreit. This paper was merged with the Manitowoc Post, owned by Emil Baensch and edited by Walter Wittmann. The new German paper continued to publish for several years with Mr. Wittmann in charge of the editorial department and Mr. Dusold directing the mechanical and job printing departments. In late years, the Post’s subscription list was sold to a German weekly published at Winona, Minn., but Mr. Dusold continued the operation of a job printing firm under the name of the Manitowoc Printing company. This firm has been doing business for 21 years. Mr. Dusold’s father was one of the organizers of the Freier Saengerbund, oldest German singing society in Wisconsin. Mr. Dusold served as secretary of this organization for 17 years. He was also a second lieutenant in the old Company E, a member of the volunteer fire department, the F.R.A., Eagles and Knights of Pythias. He also held membership in the local typographical union for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Dusold observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary with a dance at Saenger hall last Sept. 18. Several hundred friends and relatives attended. The couple received many floral bouquets and telegrams of congratulations. Politically Mr. Dusold affiliated himself with the democratic party. He was a candidate for register of deeds, however on the republican ticket in 1930, but failed of nomination. At that time he expressed the opinion that a man aspiring for office in this county had to be on the republican ticket, hence his “democratic candidacy on the republican ticket.” Besides the widow, there are three surviving children, two having died in infancy. There is one daughter, Mrs. William E. Bartel of this city and two sons, Fred W., and Edwin W., both of this city; and four brothers, Edward and William of this city, Oliver of Sandusky, O., and George of Sheboygan. DUSOLD, LOCAL BOY WHO DROVE TRUCK 6000 MILES IN WAR, WRITES OF EXPERIENCE In a letter to his sister, Mrs. William Bartels, 1907 Western Ave. E.H. Dusold, Co. E. 14th Engineers, after referring to a number of family matters has the following interesting news to relate. “Will write you about the different places I was in. When we left New York it took us twelve days to make the trip on a German interned ship, the Princess Irene renamed the Pocahontas. Landed in St. Naziare and stayed there for a few days and were sent to Blois in the training camp where Napoleon trained his men a century ago and then left for an English engineering camp outside of the city of Rouen. Stayed in this camp for a few days and then left for Berneville and joined this regiment. We were with the British about five miles behind the lines. Got used to the guns and sometime later moved to Vendroux near Calais and stayed there until Aug 1; were released from the British and went with the Americans. When we left Calais we went to Chateau Thierry and stayed there a week and then went to a place called Trugy. Stayed in a farmer’s yard. There were buildings all around us. There was an old church there that had been partly demolished during a previous war. From there we removed to LaFollie, doing road work and there I ran into the 32nd Division’s train and met a Polish fellow by the name of Jake. I can’t recall his last name, who had talked with Bib the day before. The troops had taken another road so saw nothing of them. They had just come out of the lines at Esmes and had probably gone to the Toul sector. We moved up to Villa Laroye, about two miles from Fismes, returned to our place again and then crossed the River Marne to Dormaus, then moved to Limper about twelve miles from Verdun. Stayed there a few days and moved a part of the company to Lorey and some stayed in Clairmont Lufer and moved from there to Vranicourt and remained for sometime. The company moved to Paris and through Vranicourt to Lesislets and the next day returned to Vranicourt. Moved to Cheppy then to Rattantout and then to our present camp. We are just off the Grand Tranchee, near St. Maurice and Billy. Have a nice place. We are twenty-five miles from Metz, in Alsace Lorraine. We expect to have some spread today, chicken dinner, pie, grapes, apples, cigars and cigarettes. We won’t eat those though. Also have a band to play for us if it don’t rain. I have driven the truck 6,000 miles since I have been here and have no idea when we will leave for home.” Manitowoc Herald News, Friday, January 03, 1919 Page 8 (Bib refers to Joseph who was later killed in action/he is buried in Calvary, Manitowoc)
