WILLIAM F. ELDRIDGE DIED: In Manitowoc, Wisconsin, Nov. 10, 1865, William Frederick Eldridge, only son of W.F. and Annie M. Eldridge, aged 3 years and 7 days. Young Willie was our household pet The favored one of all he met And now me thinks I see him yet, As when He sat in fondness on my knee, And prattled forth his words of glee; A heart as merry, light and free. Was then An angel spirit to become Ere long through fields of bliss to roam, And leave us in our earthly home To Weep. We saw him fading, day by day, Just as the sunlight fades away, Without one bright or cheering ray To keep Alive that spark of hope within, Or from the grasp of death to win, That little heart, so free from sin And strife. We knew would live and smile again, When freed from earthly care and pain So pure and spotless without stain His life. One morning he was worse, and we Had gathered round the bed to see The last deep struggle yet to be, For breath Had well nigh left that form so still; We gazed and there lay little Will, His voice was hushed forever still In death! At evening came an angel band, From the far off and spirit land, To bear away mid zephyrs bland, The fair. And now we fancy in the breeze That sighs all mournfully through the trees, A voice of heavenly love, which says, "He's there!" Manitowoc Pilot Friday, November 17, 1865 pg. 4

WILLIAM E. ELLIOTT (d. 1925) DEATH COMES TO W.E. ELLIOTT TODAY VETERAN CHIEF ENGINEER OF GOODRICH LINE Well Known Resident of City Passes Away After Long Illness Death which came to him at the family home on St. Clair street at 6 o'clock this morning brought to a close the long and active life of William E. Elliott, for fifty years chief engineer of the Goodrich transit company and at his death consulting engineer of the line, although retired. The death of Mr. Elliott was peaceful and came as result of a decline which he had suffered for several months and which his advanced age made it impossible for him to combat. Funeral services for Mr. Elliott will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the First Presbyterian church, the Rev. M.S. Weber officiating. The body will be taken to the church at 10 Wednesday morning to lie in state until the funeral service. A request made by Mr. Elliott that the male quartette of the Kiwanis club, of which he was a charter member, sing at the funeral, will be complied with. The death of Mr. Elliott, while not unexpected, comes as a shock to the community in which he had resided for more than thirty years and where he has been one of the most beloved citizens, admired and respected by all for the high ideals and sterling character which he possessed. Although in late years, because of illness and age, denied the activities of former years, Mr. Elliott up to his last illness was a familiar figure at the gatherings of organizations with which he was affiliated and which at all times on those occasions paid tribute in honoring him. Elks Pay Him Honor An indication of the high regard to which Mr. Elliott was held was manifested by the Manitowoc Lodge of Elks, of which he was a charter member, at a meeting a month ago when he was unanimously voted a life membership in the order by the lodge. On the occasion of a visit of Grant Exalted Ruler Atwell of the Elks to the city recently Mr. Elliott was unable to be present because of illness and it was a great disappointment to him when he was forced to send regrets. He was one of the oldest members of Manitowoc lodge and none in the organization commanded a greater love than he. A Native of England Mr. Elliott was a native of England, born in 1840 at Nottinghamshire and came to America in 1854 when his parents located at London, Canada where he received his early education. His service as an engineer in which he achieved national fame, was ushered in when he entered the employ of the Great Western Railway company, with which he remained for six years. Later he was associated with the Detroit Locomotive Works for two years. In July 1863 Mr. Elliott entered upon what proved to be his life career and achievement of prominence when he secured a berth as assistant engineer of a new steamer, Reindeer, on the Saginaw river. The following year he was appointed assistant engineer of the steamship Milwaukee between Grand Haven and Milwaukee and in 1865 became chief engineer of the Ward line. When the Goodrich Transit company purchased the steamer Alpena Mr. Elliott became chief engineer and was in charge of the boat for one season. In 1868 he located at Milwaukee and 1894 removed to Chicago, retaining his connection with the Goodrich company whose boat, the steamer Sheboygan, he was chief of for four seasons and was then appointed chief engineer of the entire line. Directed Building of Boats In his capacity as chief engineer Mr. Elliott superintended the building of many boats of the Goodrich fleet including the Chicago, DePere, City of Racine, Indiana, Iowa and Georgia and directed the placing of machinerys in all of the boats. For many years Mr. Elliott devoted his work to building of boats for the company and directing the improvements which from time to time were added. A Popular Official Old employes of the Goodrich company today said that there had never been a more popular official in the directory of the company than Mr. Elliott. He was always faithful, always courteous, always true and always a gentleman and his character and ideals fitted in with a life whose passing brings to all who knew him more intimately a keen sorrow in a sense of a real loss to them personally. Always a close and hard worker Mr. Elliott up to the very time of his retirement gave his energy to perfecting improvements in marine engineering and many of his ideas are today featured in machinery of boats not only on the lakes but in ocean traffic as well. He was prominent as a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Society of Naval Engineers, and of the Marine Engineers Beneficial Association of which later organization he was nation vice president. Locally Mr. Elliot was a charter member of the Elks of this city ???? the Kiwanis club in both organizations of which he took an (the last two sentences are unreadable) organizations was missed by Mr. Elliott up to the time of his critical illness and he was always called upon at these gatherings for talks. Mr. Elliott is survived by his widow whom he married after the death of his former wife and whose two sons of a former marriage were given Mr. Elliott's name after the union, L.J. Elliott of Chicago and S.S. Elliott of Panama. Mr. Elliott was a personal friend of the late A.W. Goodrich, founder of the Goodrich Transportation company, and of his son who succeeded as head of the company and was intimate with the late Capt. D.M. Cochrane, another veteran official of the Goodrich line whose death occurred about a year ago. Members of the Elks and the Kiwanis club will attend the funeral on Wednesday in a body. Mr. Elliott died last year and was the oldest member of the Elks here at the time. The memorial will also serve as a tribute to the ship building industry, the pioneer business of the city. The Elks Committee in charge of the affair is T.W. Gray, W.F. Pflueger and J.C. Johnson. Their will be music and an address by a speaker yet to be selected. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., Aug. 30, 1928 ******** RETIREMENT OF CAPT. ELLIOTT Retirement of Capt. W. E. Elliott for fifty-five years employed as chief engineer of the Goodrich Transit Company was announced Tuesday. Capt. Elliott remains with the Goodrich Company in advisory capacity and at full salary under a resolution adopted by the board of directors of the company at a meeting held in Chicago February 27. Joseph Peroutka, engineer of the Goodrich steamer, Christopher Columbus, succeeds Capt. Elliott as chief engineer of the line, announcement of the appointment of the local man being made co-incident with the retirement of the veteran engineer. Action of the Goodrich Company in retiring Capt. Elliott on full pay is a service which had been rendered the company and letter announcing the company's actions expresses the esteem and confidence in which Mr. Elliott is held by the officers of the Company. The resolution, a copy of which has been forwarded to Capt. Elliott reads: “Mr. W. E. Elliott, Chief Engineer, be placed on the retired list and on account of his many years of very satisfactory service, at full pay. It is the wish of the directors that Mr. Elliott act in advisory capacity. Joseph Peroutka will be appointed chief engineer of the Company and it is hoped that Mr. Peroutka may be advised that he many call upon Mr. Elliott for advice whenever occasion demands.” Capt. Elliott came to the Goodrich Line April 15, 1868 and within another month will have rounded out fifty-five years of service with the Company, which he said was the best operating on the Great Lakes, barring none. Mr. Elliott paid tribute to the officers of the line, particularly President H. W. Thorpe, whom he has been associated and declared that Mr. Thorpe had been the Savior of the Goodrich Company and was one of the most efficient and capable men in lake transportation. It was aboard the old steamer, Alpena, as chief engineer that Capt. Elliott came to the Goodrich Company. When the Company purchased the boat at Detroit, he was sent with it to the port, the Alpena being the first boat to land at the present docks and warehouses of the Goodrich Company. Capt. Elliott became chief engineer of the line during the time of the late Capt. A.W. Goodrich, its founder and was a close personal friend of Mr. Goodrich. He has served with the Company under four superintendents, Captains F.G. Burgon, W.E. Gillman, D.M. Cochrane and Franklin and said today that his relations had always been the most cordial and his service with the company a pleasure. The Corona was the first boat built under the supervision of Capt. Elliott and he has superintended the construction of every new boat and rebuilding of old boats of the line since that time. “For the first time in sixty years, I am without a job,” said Capt. Elliott Tuesday, but he did not appear to be unhappy over the matter. Capt. and Mrs. Elliott, who have been residents here for twenty-five years, will continue their home here where Mr. Elliott will be available to the Goodrich Company in advising on matters of boat construction. WILLIAM H. ELLIS WILLIAM ELLIS DIES AFTER A BRAVE FIGHT Prominent Young Business Man of Two Rivers Succumbs Seldom has a community been more shocked than it was late yesterday afternoon upon receiving the news that William Ellis of Two Rivers had lost out in his fight for life and had succumbed at a Chicago hospital where he has been receiving treatment and where he was operated upon five weeks ago. The operation for gall stones performed at that time was found to have revealed a more serious condition than was expected and though the patient had rallied, he was only holding his own for the past two weeks and later, suffered a relapse and..(two lines underinked and unreadable)…which came at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon. Joseph Koenig, his father-in-law, received the sad message here and immediately departed for Chicago to be with his daughter and to take charge of the body. Operated Five Weeks Ago Exactly five weeks ago today the operation was performed at the Presbyterian hospital, Chicago and from the first realization came that the fight would be a hard one, with the odds against the patient. At no time, however, was hope given up and even as late as yesterday morning Mr. Ellis was sitting up and announced that he was feeling better and his wife who has been a constant attendant at his bedside felt renewed hope. She had planned to make a brief visit home today. Deceased was born at Freeport, Ill., and came to Two Rivers five years ago where he married Miss Ruby Koenig, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Koenig, on July 8, 1916. One daughter, Barbara, aged fifteen months, together with his father and two brothers and sisters all living at Freeport, survive. He was but 35 years of age. Decedent was a member of the local lodge of Elks and also a member of the Two Rivers lodge of Masons. Head of Metalware Co. He was president of the Two Rivers Metalware Manufacturing company organized a few years ago at that city and only recently it is said the company had taken over a Chicago plant and was planning to move the equipment to Two Rivers. He had achieved a marked success in the venture which manufactured copper and metalware products and it was branching out and becoming a big institution chiefly because of the directing genius of its head. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin. Decedent was one of the rising and immensely popular both with his young business men of his native city business associates and in the social life of the community. As president of the Lakeside Country club he took a great interest in its success and during his tenure of office the club enjoyed one of the best years of its existence. He put the same energetic work in furthering its success as he did in anything he undertook and the club reflected his enthusiasm in more than marked degree. A Community Sorrowful Two Rivers and Manitowoc will feel the death of Mr. Ellis keenly. Alive to every business enterprise with which his city was identified, he was at once progressive and assisted in every way to further the cause of civic improvement. As a business man he had become recognized as a genius and though but thirty-five years of age had already become one of the moving spirits in the business life of the community. To be stricken down in the prime of his young life is a sad visitation and can only be borne with the fortitude that comes with realization that Life is uncertain and that no one knows the day, nor the hour. Two Rivers will miss Will Ellis and his many friends here can only extend the sincere sympathy to a well beloved and bereaved family. The funeral will take place Friday afternoon and will be held from the home of Maximilian Rahr on North Eighth street. Manitowoc Herald News, March 15, 1923 P. 1 ******** The body of William H. Ellis, who died at Chicago Thursday afternoon at the Presbyterian hospital, will arrive here late this afternoon and the funeral will be held tomorrow, Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Maximillian Rahr home on North Eighth street. The funeral will be in charge of Two Rivers Lodge No. 200, Free and Accepted Masons of which Mr. Ellis was a member. Members of the local Masonic lodge have been requested to assemble at the lodge hall at 1:30 and will attend the funeral in a body. Manitowoc Herald News, Manitowoc, Wis. CARRIE L. ELLISON Body of Former Resident Buried Here The remains of Mrs. A. Aslaksen(sic), former resident of this city and pioneer of Manitowoc, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. Scow, at Chicago, will be brought here for burial. The body will arrive here on the 4:40 train over the Northwestern line Tuesday afternoon and will be taken to the Frazier mortuary, Ninth and Chicago streets, from where burial will take place Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. O.K. Espeseth will conduct the services and burial will be at Evergreen. Manitowoc Herald News Saturday, December 15, 1928 pg. 1 ******** [Cemetery office: I searched Aslaksen & didn't have a burial by that name around that timeframe. However, I then searched Scow and discovered that there was a burial of Carrie Ellison on 12/19/1928 on the Erie Scow lot (C-5-5). Carrie died in Chicago, IL and her funeral was handled by Herald Frazier. Therefore, I think there is an incorrect name listed in the obituary. JOHN ELLISON Told by physicians in the west that he was suffering from lung trouble, John Ellison, a Manitowoc boy, advised of the establishment of a county sanitarium here and desirous of meeting death among friends, if death was to be his portion, returned recently and made application for admission to Maple Crest and entered the sanitarium some time ago. It was too late however. The disease had fastened itself upon him too strongly and everything that could be done was to no avail and Sunday he passed away. Mr. Ellision was 42 years of age and unmarried. He formerly resided on North Fifth Street. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Dec. 15, 1913 page 4 ******** [cause: pulmonary tuberculosis/bur. on Erie Scow lot]
