GEORGE WARREN EMERY LOST ON THE SEA BIRD Information Relative to the Citizens of Manitowoc who were Victims of the Late Disaster. Thirty-One Persons Lost. In fulfilling the painful duty which devolves upon us at this time we have endeavored to present to our readers a correct report containing all the information in regard to the lost which we could obtain. We fear there will be some errors, but we have as far as possible obtained the statements of relatives or immediate friends of the deceased. We would that some other hand than ours--one better skilled in soothing afflicted hearts--might perform the sad office of saying comforting words to the distressed of our Village, but it may not be and we can only say to those who suffer, you have our heartfelt sympathy--and the sympathy of every person in Manitowoc. We have known your friends, respected them, loved them; and your loss is our loss. Let us hope that He who doeth all things well hath not permitted our friends to fall in vain. The first name on our list is: GEO. W. EMERY. This well known citizen came to this place in 1856 from Monroe, Me. Prior to that time he was in the lumber business, but thinking to better his fortunes in the "Far West" he came to Wisconsin. For some years he had a grocery and general merchandise store on York St., we believe in the building now occupied by Mr. Smoke. About six years ago he engaged in the Lake Superior trade. He bought cattle, flour and various kinds of produce, which he shipped on speculation to dealer in that Northern climate, frequently making a journey thither himself. His purchases were not confined to this place; he bought here, there, anywhere that he could buy the cheapest, and was consequently traveling the greater part of the time. He was very fond of his home, but this trade was lucrative, and as he often said he felt as safe on a steamer as he did on the shore, he continued in it. He was a very strong man and it is related that in winter time when returning from Lake Superior he frequently walked long distances tiring, out the strongest horses. Knowing this, his friends did not give up hopes of his being saved until the last moment, but alas, their hopes were vain! He was also known to possess great presence of mind. Once when the Str. Planet took fire he was on board and rendered efficient service in subduing the flames. Captain Wilkins frequently refers to his efforts on that occasion. Quite reticent in his intercourse with his fellow men he still had warm friends. He was well educated and his opinion on all matters pertaining to every day life was highly valued. He was a good business man in every sense of the work, and we express but the common sentiment of our citizens when we state that the community has met with a great loss in his death. He leaves a wife and three children, the oldest being an interesting girl of 12 years, to mourn his untimely end. (Article continues in the same manner for each individual lost on the SEA BIRD; James A. Hodges, Capt. N.T. Nelson, Capt. John Sorenson, Charles Riechen, Joseph Doucett, Henry Nieman, Henry Pfeffer, James Leykom, August Wilde, Richard Flossbach, Amos Meyer, John Melka, Martin Rozezguiatee, Wm. Barter, Casper Klimer, John Foucks, Herman Jacoby, Wenzel Hawlichek, P.C. Danahy, Raymond H. Hunt, Fred Henning Jr., and Thorine Oleson.) OTHERS. We hear of others who were on the boat beyond a doubt--one a Norwegian who has been chopping wood in this vicinity, could not learn his name; and two girls from the country who took passage from here with the intention of going either to Milwaukee or Chicago have not been heard from since the disaster. So it will be seen there were Thirty-one from here certainly, and two doubtful, lost on the SEA BIRD. The Manitowoc Tribune Thursday, April 16, 1868 pg. 4

MARY ELA EMERY (d. 1873) From the Files of the Pilot - Forty-Four Years ago (1873) DIED - Emery On Tuesday morning at 8:30 o'clock am, March 8th, 1873 at Manitowoc, Wis., Mamie E. Emery(sic), aged 17 years, 6 months. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs, Mar. 8, 1917 ******** DIED. EMERY—On Tuesday morning, at 8-1/2 o’clock, A.M., March 11th, 1873, at Manitowoc, Wis., MAMIE (sic) E. EMERY, aged 17 years, 6 months. It seems almost unnecessary to do more than speak the name of Mamie Emery after announcing her much lamented decease; for just her name has been, with a large circle of acquaintances, a synonym for unusual graces of personal character; so that retaining her name seems like preserving a beautiful casket brimming full of rare gems. It is vain, in this public way, to hope to administer solace or comfort to the wounded hearts of her bereaved mother and relatives. There are griefs too sacred to be unveiled to the world and too tender to be assuaged by any consolations proferred by the public. But with cautious words, lest we should seem to draw rule attention to the anguish and desolation of a broken circle, we will, on behalf of a multitude of friends, give expression to the deep sense of bereavement that pervades our community, with both young and old; we will drop a tear with those that weep, and endeavor to embalm the choice memories that cling and cluster about her name. Her life, so well known to many in Manitowoc, though a mirror of purity and innocence, and lately so rich in the developments of worth and solid excellence, was not more beautiful than the circumstances attending her sickness and death. Although she seemed to dispute with disease for the mastery of life for a period of three months, yet a murmur never escaped her lips, and her abounding kindness and gratitude constantly prompted her, whether at midnight or in the morning or at noonday, to recognize and warmly acknowledge the smallest attention, until the power to recognize kindness faded away together with the decay of her power to express gratitude. The symmetry and balance of her character were never lost nor even marred by the wasting of disease nor the contemplation of death. Her peace was so complete, her confidence so well grounded, and her hopes so bright, that she was herself surprised at her unalloyed happiness. Her life was short and in the ordinary way of judging not eventful; but let its value and importance be measured, not by the number of her years, but by the excellence and beauty of the character she attained. She has been taken from her family and friends; but sweeter than the flowers that will distill the dews of heaven upon her grave, more gentle and placid than the summer resting of the Lake she loved to gaze upon, and brighter than the studded sky that will guard her resting place, will be the affectionate remembrance of all who knew Mamie Emery. CARL W. ENDRESS WHERE THE WEARY FIND REST Carl W. Endress, Pioneer Resident, Passes from Life of Long Years One more of the pioneers of Manitowoc county has crossed the river to rest in the shade of the trees, death having released Carl W. Endress from the responsibilities of earthly life at 10 o’clock Sunday night. Death’s messenger is a sad visitation, but when the insidious foe of life has gnawed for months, oftimes for years, on the vitals of some fond charge on the care and attention of mother, father, husband, wife or children, who have watched the color fade from the cheek and the luster from the eye, then it is that the soul is glad to pass the portals and bring relief to dying mortality as well as to the living. Such was the end of Carl Endress, who for a long period had battled disease until his enfeebled constitution could no longer bear up and then, conscious up to within a few minutes of death, his eyes closed peacefully and the spirit silently took flight. Carl W. Endress, who had been a resident of this county nearly half a century, was born in Wittenberg, Germany, November 7, 1828 and immediately after his marriage in 1854 came to Manitowoc county where he has since been a prominent and highly respected resident. For years, from 1855 to 1888 he made his home at Two Rivers and at the latter date retired from active business pursuits and came to this city where he has continued to reside. Mrs. Endress died a few months ago and since that time the husband has failed rapidly. He was a patient sufferer and received the tender care of his children, but it was seen some time ago that his life work was about to be finished. His death came as a severe shock. During his life-time acquaintance with affairs of Manitowoc county Mr. Endress had ever been a citizen devoted to the interests of the community and had accomplished much for the advancement of this section. He was a man of high character and was universally esteemed. Three sons Emil G. and S.F., of Saulte Ste. Marie, and A.J., of this city, and one daughter, Mrs. Joseph Willott Jr., besides a large circle of friends, survive to mourn his demise. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon from the late home, 504 State street and will be in charge of the fraternal organization Sons of Hermann, of which deceased was a member. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, February 10, 1902, Page 1 ********* After a long illness Carl W. Endress, well-known resident of our city, died Sun. Mr. Endress was born 07 Nov. 1823 in Wittenberg and came to America in 1854. He settled in Two Rivers where he operated a large commercial fishery. He moved to Manitowoc in 1888 where he lived ever since. He lost his wife only a few months ago. He is survived by 3 sons and a daughter. His funeral took place yesterday under the direction of the local Sons of Hermann Lodge. Der Nord Westen, 13 Feb. 1902 ********* DIED Endress - At his home in the city of Manitowoc, Feb. 9, 1902, Carl W. Endress, aged 79 years. Carl W. Endress was born in Wittenberg, Germany November 7, 1823 and was married to the wife who preceded him to the grave only a few months ago, in 1854. He settled in Two Rivers soon after his arrival in this country and worked at his trade, that of a shoemaker for several years. He then took up the business of fishing and was one of the few who made a success of it. In 1888 he moved to Manitowoc after making this city his home for more than 30 years. His funeral took place yesterday afternoon and was largely attended. His son, Adolph and his only daughter, Bertha, wife of Hon. Jos. Willolt Jr., reside in Manitowoc. His other two surviving sons, Emil and Richard reside at the Soo. They were all present at the funeral. Mr. Endress was a man of more than usual physical and mental strength and endurance and his success in life was largely due to his intelligence, endurance and persistence. He was a devoted husband and father and as a citizen he was deserving of general esteem. The Chronicle, Tues., Feb. 11, 1902 ********* [bur. 02-14-1902/age 78 yrs./cause:dropsy]

BERTHA ENGELBRECHT (d. 1911) DEATH CAME TO HER SUDDENLY Mrs. J.F. Engelbrecht Expires Without Warning of the End ILL 7 WEEKS BUT WAS THOUGHT BETTER Death came suddenly without warning to Mrs. J. F. Engelbrecht, 924 South Thirteenth St. this morning, Mrs. Engelbrecht expiring as she was about to return to her bed after having been about the house for a short time. Though indisposed and ill for several weeks, Mrs. Engelbrecht's condition was not thought to be serious and her sudden demise is a painful shock to family and friends. She was 54 years of age and up to a few weeks ago had enjoyed robust health, but recently she suffered an attack of illness which though it had confined her to her bed, was not considered serious and left her bed and for some time was sitting up talking with members of the family. At 10 o'clock, somewhat tired from her exertions, she decided to return to her bed and was just about to do so and was seated upon the edge of the bed, when she suddenly fell over and when her daughter reached her, was unconscious, death coming within a few seconds. Mrs. Engelbrecht, with her husband, had made Manitowoc their home for a long term of years and have many friends to whom the announcement of death will bring a keen sense of personal loss. The husband, with ten children survive Mrs. Engelbrecht. Children surviving Mrs. Engelbrecht are Arthur, John Jr., Hugo, Oscar, this city; Mrs. J. W. Kern, Milwaukee; Mrs. Emil Lebeck, Luxemburg; Amanda, Leanda, Leona, Lillian and Elsa of this city. The funeral arrangements have not been completed but Rev. An enthusiastic beliver in Christ, Mom lost her battle with cancer. But her life demonstrated that even though the physical body may be destroyed by disease, the Spirit can remain triumphant. Cancer is so limited... It cannot cripple love, It cannot shatter hope, It cannot corrode faith, It cannot eat away peace, It cannot destroy confidence, It cannot kill freindship, It cannot shut of memories, It cannot silence courage, It cannot invade the soul, It cannot reduce eteranl life, It cannot quench the Spirit, It cannot lessen the power of the resurrection. If an incurable disease has invaded your life, refuse to let it touch your spirit. Your body can be severely afflicted, and you may have a great struggle. EUGENE ENGELBRECHT JR (d. 1956) Two young Manitowoc County children died in separate accidents Tuesday after- noon within a short time of each other. Killed were Eugene Engelbrecht Jr., 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Engelbrecht Sr. of Rt. 3, Manitowoc and… Young Engelbrecht was killed instantly about 3:40 p.m. when the bicycle he was riding was struck by a northbound automobile driven by Arthur J. Zinkel, 24, of Rt. 3, Manitowoc. The accident occurred as the boy and five companions were emerging from the driveway of the Gustav Friedrichsmeier residence on the east side of old Highway 141 a half mile north of the Circle In. Zinkel told Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen that he applied his brakes about 75 feet south of the driveway and swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid hitting the boys. The front of his car struck young Engelbrecht and narrowly missed hitting several of his companions. The boy was tossed in the air and flung against the windshield. His body was found in the west ditch north of the driveway. Dr. Teitgen said the boy died instantly of a skull fracture and broken neck and also had two broken arms and a badly mangled left leg. On Way From School Riding with Fogelbrecht at the time were Roger and Donald Sprang, Gerald and Robert Speath and Robert Popp, all school mates of the deceased. The boys were on their way home from school and had stopped at the Friedrichsmeier residence to pick up some pears lying on the ground in an orchard after asking the permission of the occupants. They were leaving the residence when the accident occurred. County traffic police said a seven foot high hedge on the east side of the road and to the south of the driveway blocked the view of both the bicyclists and the driver. Zinkel, an employe of the Kohler Co., was on his way home at the time… Dr. Teitgen said Wednesday that an inquest will be held __ the ___. HERBERT ENGELBRECHT 24 Apr. Death on Sat. of the almost month-old child of 5th Ward resident Ferdinand Engelbrecht. The funeral took place Tues. afternoon. note: I contacted the cem. office to see if she could verify this one and here's the reply: The burial register has Herbert Engelbrecht, age 5 weeks (so I'm not sure where age 1 yr came from), son of Ferd. & Bertha Engelbrecht, born in Manitowoc, cause of death: cramps. He is buried on a lot purchased by Ferdinand Engelbrecht, which was paid 4/21/1890 (one day after Herbert's death). There is, however, one other child buried on the same space, which I have absolutely no info for (no dates, nothing).

Mr. Engelbrecht was widely known, having for many years previous to his election as sheriff been a salesman for the International Harvester Company, and coming into personal contact with farmers and business men of the county. He had a personality that was also a factor in his campaign and received a large endorsement and served efficiently in his office. Born in Germany May 19, 1850, Mr. Engelbrecht came to America at the age of 17, the family locating in Nebraska and a year later removing to Manitowoc where he continued his residence up to three years ago. Mr. Engelbrecht lived on a farm at Rosencrans and was married 55 years ago to Bertha Bruss who preceded him in death 17 years ago. The couple came to the city forty years ago. WILHELM ENGELBRECHT The body of Wm. Engelbrecht, who died suddenly in Chicago, was brought here last week for burial. The facts surrounding his death have so far not been revealed, only that the local police have been advised that there is a coroner’s inquiry in Chicago. Naturally, the parents wish to know the facts surrounding their son’s death and have asked the local police to investigate. Wm. Engelbrecht, who was 30 years old and who leaves his parents and several sisters, had been living in Chicago for several years where he was a fireman on a steamer. Der Nord Westen, 22 Oct. 1908 ******** ASK POLICE TO GET AT FACTS Relatives Unable to Learn Facts About Death of W. Engelbrecht Unable to learn the details of the death of William Engelbrecht, a Manitowoc boy whose body was shipped here from Chicago Thursday night, local undertakers and the police, at request of relatives, will ask the Chicago authorities to investigate. The fact that an inquest is pending in Chicago leads to the belief that Engelbrecht's death was attended by unusual circumstances and may have been tragic and relatives are desirous of gaining information on the subject. Refusal of Chicago undertakers who had charge of the body to inform local undertakers of the facts add to the mystery in the case and coupled with this is the incident of a phone message to Police Chief Groffman from Chicago Thursday from someone who wanted to confer with him on the death. The Chicago party, evidently a man, insisted that no one but the police chief must be communicated with but it was impossible to get the message through. Delay in the shipping of the body of Engelbrecht from Chicago is what caused the suspicion that some unusual feature attended his death. The fact that the body arrived here without the requisite board of health transportation permit also confirmed the suspicion that there was something extraordinary connected with the case. A note was received today from the Chicago undertaker stating that the cause of death was tetanus but further than that gave no explanation save that an inquest was pending. No satisfactory reason could be secured as a cause for the delay in shipment of the body but after its arrival, the note stating that an inquest was pending added to the mystery. The body was prepared for interment at the Vogelsang and Murphy rooms and an examination there revealed nothing that might be construed unusual with the remains. The funeral was held today from the home of the parents on Green Street. William Engelbrecht left for Chicago several years ago and was engaged as a steamboat fireman with that city as his headquarters. He roomed at 1722 West 63rd Street but died at the hospital. He is survived by his parents and several sisters and brothers. He was 30 years of age and unmarried. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Fri., Oct. 16, 1908 ************ REMOVED SCAB, DEATH RESULTED Chicago Police Furnish Details of Death of Wm Engelbrecht in That City Removal of a scab which was formed over a wound resulting from a rusty nail in the foot caused the death of William Engelbrecht, a Manitowoc boy who died at Chicago and about whose death a pall mystery hung because Chicago undertakers and police authorities neglected to inform relatives of the details. Inquiries made at the time by local police brought no satisfactory explanation and the fact that an inquest had been ordered on the death and that the transportation certificate did not accompany the body when it was received here caused much speculation and some anxiety to the family and friends and Police Chief Groffman was asked to investigate. Details of the death of Engelbrecht are told in a letter from the Chicago police department to the local police received Friday. Engelbrecht was injured October 8 when he stepped upon a rusty nail at Illinois and Cass Streets, Chicago and his death was directly due to the injury resulting when the nail penetrated the foot. The unfortunate youth removed the scab which had formed and blood poisoning resulted which was followed by death in a few days. Engelbrecht was 30 years of age and had been at Chicago for several years employed as a marine fireman. His body was brought here for burial. JOHN ERDMANN (d. 1914) DEATH COMES AS CLIMAX TO MISFORTUNES OF LITTLE FAMILY WHEN IT TAKES FATHER, LONG A SUFFERER John Erdman (sic), a north side man, gave up an unequal struggle against tuberculosis yesterday when death came to him at Maple Crest sanatorium where he had been a patient for some time. Erdman was in the advanced stages of the disease when he consented to go to the sanatorium and while his life had undoubtedly been prolonged by the care he received, there was no hope for his recovery. Erdman’s death is peculiarly sad. He was but 36 years of age and is survived by a wife and four children. The little family made a brave struggle against adversity but the father’s illness was a handicap that forced them to succumb, and Erdman has been cared for by the city. The body was brought to the vault at Evergreen today and the burial will be held tomorrow. Manitowoc Daily Herald, August, 19, 1914 P. 1 ******** BACKED INTO SHAFT, IS HURT John Erdman Injured at Smalley Plant Today, May Be Serious John Erdman, employed at the shops of the Smalley Manufacturing Co. was severely injured at the plant of the company this morning in a fall into the elevator shaft, Erdman suffering a depressed fracture of the skull severe scalp wounds and a fracture of the shoulder blade. Erdman is at the hospital and unless the injuries are more serious than now thought, it is believed he will recover. Erdman was working about the plant and walked into the elevator shaft backward, falling to the bottom of the shaft and striking upon his head. The elevator had been dropped and Erdman was not aware of the fact and he backed into the shaft before he could be warned of his danger. If Erdman has not sustained a fracture at the base of the brain, his chances for recovery are said to be excellent but his condition causes alarm. The man was severely bruised about the head and body by the fall and will be incapacitated for several weeks at any rate. Erdman is a married man, residing with his family on North Eighth St. He had been employed at the plant of the Smalley Co. for some time.
