She was laboring under a fit of temporary insanity, the result of a chronic disease taking an acute form and while in this condition she left her home and went to the river, a distance of one and one-half miles, and then drowned herself. She was observed going toward the stream, and not reappearing, a search was instituted. The first traces found were a pair of shoes and an apron lying on the bank of the river. The corpse was soon after discovered, lying in 18 inches of water. BRUNO ERTZ Bruno Ertz, 83, Artist Born in Manitowoc, Dies Bruno Ertz, who had attained world fame for the lifelike reproduction of birds and butterflies, died Wednesday night at Elgin, Ill. The native of this city was 83. Ertz, who was born March 1, 1873, achieved first place as an artist in his class without ever having taken a lesson. His water colors hang in famous galleries and stand in private libraries all over the world, and yet he had never even seen another artist dip brush in water colors to paint a picture. The artist who long had been recognized as the foremost painter of birds, butterflies and bees in the world was entirely self-taught. He restricted his art to these subjects through coincidence. One Christmas morning a long time ago he received a box of paints. He was eager to make a picture that very day, and decided his subject would be the golden canary singing in the sunny window of his home. True to Nature His pictures were hung in homes of art connoisseurs in this country as well as England and the continent. It was the artist’s determination to put “life” into his subjects that set him apart from other painters. His desire to make them true to nature in every minute detail soon drew the attention of art lovers. Instead of sending his pictures to an art school for criticism the young artist submitted them to the Smithsonian Institute, F. H. Crittendon, of the institute …(two lines underinked and unreadable)…work and have shown it to members of the divisional force. Rummele's jewelry store on south Eighth street is a display of water color paintings which cannot fail to attract the attention of visitors. The pictures were put in place yesterday, and to-day (sic) have been the admiration of all who saw them. The pictures are all studies in still life and show an accuracy of detail, and artistic conception that marks the painter as an artist of more than ordinary talent. The highest ideal of the painter-close imitation of nature-has evidently been the aim here, and no observer can fail to be impressed with the success of the effort. It should be a source of pride to every citizen of the city that this work is all from the brush of a talented young Manitowoc artist, Mr. B. Ertz. A visit to Mr. Ertz's studio in the armory building will well repay any lover of the beautiful in the line of protrait work. He has on exhibition there several beautiful specimens of portrait painting, porcelain work, water colors, et. One or two are study pieces, types of character as shown in the study of the head. One in particular, "An Old Country Schoolmaster" has been exhibited in the leading galleries throughout the county and received honorable mention. Mr. Ertz has been for the past ten years engaged in this line of work, most of the time in Detroit. He is now located permanently in this city and should receive liberal support. He has painted a number of protraits for the leading families of the city and has given the best of satisfaction. He also gives instructions to a small class of students who are anxious to acquire proficiency in the use of the brush and palette. The pictures on display at Rummele's can be bought at very reasonable prices and should find a ready sale among those of our citizens who love to beautify their home with the works of art. WALTER ERTZ ILL SIX HOURS; THEN DIES Manitowoc Business Man Dead After Brief Suffering (Special to The Northwestern) Milwaukee, Wis. May 5—A Daily News special from Manitowoc says: Walter Ertz, a prominent young business man of this city, aged thirty-five years, expired suddenly last night after an illness of less than six hours. Oshkosh Daily Northwestern, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Friday, May 05, 1911 P.1 ******** DEATH CAME AFTER ILLNESS OF FEW HOURS Walter Ertz, West Side Boy, Ill Less Than a Half Day FAILS TO RALLY FROM THE ATTACK Never has the familiar saying, “in the midst of life we are in death”, been more forcibly emphasized than in the sudden and untimely demise of Walter Ertz, son of C.C. Ertz, Wollmer and Sixteenth Streets, one of the best known young men of the city, who died Thursday evening after an illness of less than ten hours. Mr. Ertz' death occurred at the hospital where he was removed from his home late in the afternoon when found by members of this family unconscious in his room. Death followed within a short time of removal of the unfortunate young man to the hospital. Ptomaine poisoning is believed to have been responsible for the death of Mr. Ertz who was stricken by an attack of illness during the morning of the day of his demise. Mr. Ertz had been at work painting a boat and about 9 o'clock complained of feeling ill and went to his room to rest. He was undisturbed until the afternoon when upon going into the room to see if there was anything that he might want, members of the family found him unconscious on the bed. A physician was summoned who ordered the removal of the patient to the hospital and though everything possible was done for the young man, he failed to rally and death came within a short time. Though it is possible, physicians do not believe that Mr. Ertz' death was the result of poisoning from the green paint which he used doubting that he could have inhaled sufficient to cause death. It is thought that death was caused by poisoning from something which Mr. Ertz had eaten. News of the death of Mr. Ertz was a painful shock to a large circle of friends who knew him as a young man of high character and with whom he was popular. Mr. Ertz was 35 years of age and had spent practically all his life in this city. He attended the South side school and late had assisted his father in the latter's business. He was a young man of exemplary character highly thought of and his death will be deeply deplored. Besides his parents, Mr. Ertz is survived by two brothers, Bruno of Milwaukee and Hans, who is a cadet at Annapolis and two sisters, Misses Hannah and Vera of this city. The funeral of Mr. Ertz will be held Sunday afternoon from the late home at 16th and Wollmer Streets. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Fri., May 5, 1911 ******** Following an illness of less than a day Walter Ertz died last Thursday night at the hospital. The cause of his death was ptomaine poisoning He was at work in the morning painting a boat and about 10 o'clock went to the house, saying to his mother that he was not feeling well and went to his room to lie down. A few hours later his mother went to his room and was shocked to find him delirious. A doctor was summoned and the patient was taken to the hospital, dying a few hours later. It is presumed that the poisoning resulted from inhaling the fumes of the paint. The deceased was 35 years old. He was a well known and popular young man. He is survived by his parents, two brothers Bruno of Milwaukee and Hans, a cadet at Annapolis, and two sisters, Misses Hannah and Vera of this city. The funeral was held last Sunday afternoon. GOTTFRIED J. ESCH From Der Nord Westen, 21 Dec. 1899: The body of G. Esch arrived from Colorado Sat. evening and was buried Sun. ******* WAS FAR FROM HOME Death Summons Came Suddenly to Gottfried Esch at Denver, Col. HEMORRHAGE OF THE LUNGS Deceased Was a Son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Esch and Was Born Here. Never was the familiar saying, "In the midst of life we are in death," more forcibly illustrated than in the case of Gottfried Esch, announcement of whose death came in a telegram to relatives there late Tuesday afternoon. His death occured at Denver, Col., where had had been for some time, and was very sudden, being due to a hemorrhage of the lungs. Gottfied Esch was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Esch, of this city, and was born August 15, 1866, being the youngest of four sons. About six years ago the young man's health began to fail and physicians advised a change. In the hope that he might find relief he went west, traveled extensively and finally located at Denver. He was home on a visit but once since leaving, and returned. The climate of Colorado seemed to agree with him and the letters received by his parents were most hopeful that he would regain health, but God had willed it not, and the final summons came suddenly and without warning. The deceased was in his thirty-third year at the time of his death, and most of his brief life had been spent in this city, where he attended school and lately assisted his father in conducting his business. He was widely known among the young people of the city and throughout the county, and was a general favorite, not only in his own social circle but with all who knew him. He was of a modest unassuming dispostion and won the friendship of all by kindness of heart, generosity and affectionate nature. Besides the parents, three brothers and two sisters survive to mourn the demsie of the brother they love. The brothers are all residents of this city and are William, Charles and Henry Esch. The sisters are Mrs. Rev. Stuebe, of Lincoln, Neb., and Mrs. Rev. Rusterholz, of Orville, Ohio. The body will be brought here for burial. Charles Esch having left for Denver this morning. The sympathy of many friends is extended to the bereaved family. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Tuesday, December 12, 1899 P. 1
******** DEATH OF GOTTFRIED ESCH A telegram received here on Tuesday from Denver announced the death of Gottfried Esch that morning in Denver. He has been out west for almost four years seeking health which was denied him here. He made occasional visits home and appeared healthy, but appearances were deceptive and the condition of his health necessitated a quick return to the dry climate of Colorado. His relatives here were not aware that his life was drawing to a close. He probably was not aware of it himself. A letter was received from him last Sunday which while not hopeful was not despondent. His brother Charles left on Tuesday to bring the remains home. Gottfried Esch was born in Manitowoc in August 1866 and was 33 years old at the time of his death. He began business life in his father's store and soon showed business qualities of high order. He was a young man of most pleasing manners and there was a charm in his address which made him friends wherever he went. His was a pleasing personality and all who knew him here regretted that ill health made it necessary for him to reside elsewhere. He was popular and deservedly so. His relatives have the sympathy of the entire community. Manitowoc Pilot, Wis., Thursday, December 14, 1899 pg. 7

He had, in his over sixty-five years’ residence in Manitowoc, witnessed its growth from a hamlet to a modern city and seen the business founded by him grow from a country store to an up-to-date department store. Henry Esch had been a fixture in Manitowoc so long that his death will occasion widespread sorrow. He will be sincerely mourned by all. The store he founded can well be said to have been built upon integrity. Manitowoc Herald News, April 21, 1922 ******** Henry Esch, Founder of Big Store, is Called By Death PIONEER IS CALLED AFTER ACTIVE LIFE Ninety-two Years of Age; Sixty-five In Business Here Manitowoc today is called upon to mourn the death of its foremost pioneer business man in the person of Henry Esch, Sr., who passed away at the home of his son, Charles, 819 Hancock Street last evening. It had been Mr. Esch’s wish that he might die in the harness and although a nonogenerien (sic), the deceased to within a few days of his death had been actively engaged at his desk in the store he founded so that his ambition has been realized. Had he lived until June 13, this year, he would have celebrated his ninety-second birthday. Seldom, if ever, has a man demonstrated such vigor and vitality as that of the deceased, who, up to a few weeks ago, refused steadfastly to leave his post and take to his bed. His end came as he had lived, peaceful and without suffering. Born in Germany The decedent was a native of Germany, having been born at Mettmann, Rhenish Pressia, June 13, 1830. He came to America in 1853, with two cousins, locating at Vincennes, Indiana, where he remained for two years and then removed to Manitowoc establishing in business here, conducting a general merchandise store at the corner of Quay and Ninth streets opposite the present day site of the Oriental Mills. Having learned the gun and locksmith trade in Germany he found this a profitable side line to follow here in those pioneer days. In 1865 he purchased the property at the corner of Jay and Ninth street and erected a new store which has been enlarged from time to time to meet the requirements of its ever increasing business, until, at the present day it occupies a prominent place with three of the leading mercantile establishments of the city. Four Children Survive Three sons and one daughter survive him. They are William, Henry and Charles, who are now continuing the business he established so many years ago, and Mrs. E. Stuebe, a resident of Holyoke, Massachusetts. Besides these seventeen grandchildren and four great grand children also survive. His wife preceded him in death in 1914, and when his daughter, Mrs. Eliza Rusterholz, who had been making her home with him, passed away three years ago, he took up his abode with his son Charles. He was one of the founders of the German Reformed church which was established here in 1868, and was a devout member of the same until his death. The funeral will be held at two o’clock Sunday afternoon from the church with burial at Evergreen cemetery, Rev. O. Menke officiating. Unbounded Energy It is infrequently given to man to live to be ninety, and more remarkable than this is the fact that in the death of this old time resident there is found an exemplifi- cation of physical capacity almost unheard of. He was a fixture at the store he founded, where any day he might be seen directing affairs of the institution and being back of the office desk that had become such a part of his personality. Integrity was the bulwark upon which was founded the store bearing his name and “Integrity” should be the motto inscribed upon his tombstone. Manitowoc will mourn Henry Esch as an example of good citizenship, a Christian and a great moral support to the community. OLE K. ESPESETH Funeral services for the Rev. O. K. Espeseth, 70, pastor of Lutheran churches in this city and nearby charges for 32 years, who died suddenly Wednesday afternoon, will be held Saturday afternoon. He was stricken with a heart attack as he was giving a Lenten sermon over Radio Station, WOMT, and was dead upon arrival at the hospital. Flowing private services at 1:30 p.m. at the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home, in charge of the Rev. Ernest Zoerb of the First Lutheran church, there will be services at 2:30 at Our Saviors Lutheran church at Valdes, in charge of the Rev. Walter Gigstad of Pulaski, Wis. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The sudden death of the pastor was a severe shock to his widow and family. He had eaten dinner as usual yesterday noon and after bidding Mrs. Espeseth goodbye drove away in his car to give the Lenten sermon. His last word to Mrs. Espeseth was a request that she listen in to report how his voice came over the air. She said today she had the radio tuned in and heard her husband give the opening sentence of his talk, when there was silence and a moment later a station announce- ment that the program could not be continued. The telephone rang soon after and she was advised that Rev. Espeseth had been stricken. The Rev. Espeseth was born at Valders, Norway, in 1869 and came to America with his parents in 1882. The family settled near Erskine, Polk county, Minnesota. After he was graduated from high school he attended Valparaiso university and was graduated with the degrees of bachelor of science and bachelor of arts. He attended Augsburg seminary at Minneapolis and was graduated from the Chicago Lutheran seminary of Maywood, Ill., with the degree of bachelor of Divinity. He was pastor of the Moreland Lutheran church of Chicago from 1899 to 1907. He married Miss Anna Olson July 11, 1903. Rev. Espeseth accepted a call from Manitowoc and outlying congregations in July, 1907. These included charges at Valders, Sandy Bay and Kewaunee. He served St. Paul’s Lutheran church here for 21 years and since 1928 has served the three other congregations only. Survivors are the widow; three daughters, Irene, a member of the Lincoln high school faculty, Constance of the MicKinley school faculty and Aphile, a teacher in the high school at Litchfield, Ill.; two brothers, Knut of Rosseau, Minn., Halvor of Bagley, Minn.; three sisters, Ingeberg of Fergus Falls, Minn., Mrs. Anna Duncanson of Byron, Minn., and Mrs. O. T. Rovang of Erskine, Minn. The body may be viewed at the funeral home from Friday noon until the hour of services Saturday. The casket will not be opened at the church. Espeseth, pastor of St. Paul's Norwegian Lutheran Church, Corner 10th and St. Clair St., tendered his resignation at a meeting of the congregation Tuesday night to take effect on the acceptance of the resignation stating that he could no longer keep up the work having charge of a church at Valders, at Sandy Bay and Kewaunee. The resignation was accepted with reluctance. Rev. Espeseth came to Manitowoc 21 years ago from Chicago and has been pastor of the church since. His long continuous service is evidence of his diligence and efficiency as pastor and the esteem in which he was held by his parishioners. No successor has yet been named though it was known for some time that Rev. Espeseth was contemplating his resignation because of the press of his duties. At the congregation meeting Tuesday night, Sigward B. Sanderson was named chairman of a committee of five, consisting besides himself of Mrs. Ida Neunuelel, Otia Evenson, Burt Thompson and Emil Knell to start preliminary negotiations with available pastors in preparation for a general meeting to be held on September 11. At the meeting, Arthur Eisman resigned as deacon and Sigward B. Sanderson was elected in his place. The Espeseth family will continue to reside in Manitowoc and will shortly move into their new home, nearing completion at 15th Street and Torrison Drive. Rev.
