CARL FEICHTNER On Monday last a farmer from Liberty came to the city and informed Dist. Attorney Schmitz that a man named Feichtner a resident of that town had been found dead on Sunday in a field. The man said he had shaved Feichtner and discovered no wound but heard afterwards that there was a wound in the head. Mr. Schmitz requested Coroner Luhman to go out and make an investigation. The funeral was to take place on Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock but the doctor arrived there before that time, having Harry Gilbertson with hm, so that a jury could be impaneled in case any suspicious circumstances were discovered. An examination showed a wound in the head through which the doctor thrust his finger. It was evidently made by a bullet. The flesh gave evidence of having been burned with powder and the hair was singed thus showing that the muzzle of whatever was used was held close to the head. The bullet was found on the opposite side of the head just inside the skull. It was taken out and placed in the possession of Justice Gilbertson who impaneled a jury. Feichtner went out Sunday morning about the time people were going to church. He did not return for dinner and in the afternoon his body was found. The theory is that he committed suicide, but no gun, revolver or other weapon was found near the body and the whole thing is surrounded by mystery. If it was suicide some person must have picked up the weapon with which the deed was committed and concealed it. The widow was very much opposed to an inquest's being held and protested against any interference with the funeral arrangements. Feichtner is an old resident of Liberty and owned a farm in the northern part of the town where he lived. For some years he has been rather feeble. LATER-The gun with which the deed was committed was found in a swamp which lies between the house and the place where the body was found. The widow confessed that she had found the body and the gun lying near. The people are quite religious and she feared that if the fact was known that her husband had committed suicide Christian burial would be denied him. She took the gun up and proceeded toward the house with it, but on a sudden impulse threw it over the fence into the swamp. The gun is a rusty old thing which had not been used for years. The missile it contained was an old slug not a moulded bullet. The stock of the gun was covered with clotted blood which trickled from the wound in the man's head. No one doubts the old lady's story as Feichtner had often expressed the wish he was dead because of the bad state of his health. He was 66 years old. His natural quietness added to his continued bachelorhood during all these years, made him a recluse as far as general society was concerned. He ever held the respect of all who knew him for his industry and integrity, together with the special regard of the poor and needy, who were afflicted by sickness as his heart always went out to them in their trials. There has been no man in this community who has done more nursing of the sick among God's unfortunate than he, during his lifetime. His death was somewhat sudden but not unexpected. And during his entire residence of twenty-seven years in this community, we will venture the assertion that no man can dispute the deceased's claim to the time honored axiom, "An honest man is the noblest work of God." Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., Mar. 2, 1918 ********* The grave of Nat (sic) Fenton, in the Manitowoc cemetery, is to be marked by a monument. The funds for that purpose are nearly if not quite all scribed. Every one who knew Nat Fenton liked him, and although like us all he had some defects, yet he is remembered for his good qualities alone, and the liberal contributions for his appointment by those who knew him, show how much he was esteemed by them. Manitowoc County Chronicle Two Rivers Wisconsin June 1, 1875 ********* JOINER WORK- One of the best mechanics we ever met-one who knows his business, and understands what you want in a twinkling-is Mr. Nat. Fenton, who keeps a Cabinet and Furniture establishment next door east of Platt's store. In arranging our office, it was necessary to call on him for some joiner work, and he was always on hand, done his work quickly, and in a genteel manner. We warrant that such a man sells nothing but good ware, and that, too, at a low figure. Manitowoc Pilot, June 14, 1859 p.3 (Note: On the 1860 Manitowoc ward 2 census: N. GEORGE FERRY TAKE BODY OF SAILOR FROM RIVER TODAY John (sic) Ferry, Fireman, Missing Since April 27 Is Report A body believed to be that of John Ferry, marine fireman, was taken from the river shortly after 8 o’clock at the docks near the ship yards. The wheels of the carferry Pere Marquette No. 21 brought the corpse up from the bottom river and members of the crew attached a line to it and tied it to the dock. They notified the police and the body was taken from the water and Coroner Kemper called. He ordered it taken to the Frazier and Shimek undertaking parlors where it awaits further identification before any action is taken for burial. In Water a Month The body had apparently been in the water for a month and was badly bloated. It also appears to have been struck by the wheel of the ferry. Indications are that the man was accidentally drowned when he fell into the water possibly while looking for a boat. The partial identification was made by Peter Smith of Milwaukee, a marine fireman who has been employed with Ferry and who with the man was an occupant of a shack near Ludington for a time last summer. Smith says that Ferry’s home is at Ferryville, Ontario, Canada and that the man has a number of relatives living including a cousin, R. Ferry, Lincoln avenue, Milwaukee. He is about forty-one years old. A book found in the dead man’s clothing failed to aid the identification. No money was found on the person but a bottle full of “derail” denatured alchohol, was found in one of the pockets. Tattoo marks on the dead man’s arms aided in the identification, both the arms from the wrist to the shoulder being marked with pictures of women, anchors, a dagger through a heart and several other designs. A friend of Peter Smith’s came with him on his second visit to the police station and also identified the body as that of Ferry. He said that Ferry was born at Buffalo, New York and the family afterwards moved to Ferryville, Ontario where the dead man still has a number of relatives. An effort will be made this afternoon to get in touch with some of the relatives. Missing Since April 17 A number of marine men who were acquainted with Ferry have been asked to view the body this afternoon to determine whether the identification of the Milwaukee man is correct. Ferry has been missing since April 17 to 18 it is said. Coroner W.G. Kemper said that he did not believe an inquest would be held as nothing would be gained by such a move and it is apparently a case of accidental drowning. A report was in circulation at noon that the body had been positively identified as that of Paul Stein, a man who had been employed at the ship yards as a riveter but the report was without foundation as Stein is said to be in Milwaukee and friends here heard from him less than a week ago. C.H. FRIEDRICH FEUERPFEIL Death, by drowning, of Friedrich Feuerpfeil, bookkeeper for the firm of Schuette Bros. The deceased, who was about 24 yrs. old, went swimming with friends last Tues. at Stuempge’s Lake. He jumped into the water from a boat, got cramps, and drowned before the others could save him. His body was found yesterday morning. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon. Der Nord Westen, 21 July 1892 ******* City and County news: "Drowned" F.H. Feuerpfeil(sic) of this city was drowned in a little lake in Newton, east of Teitgen's, known as Stumpge's Lake on Tuesday afternoon this week. He was Schuette Bros. book-keeper and was having a week's vacation. A party of about 20 people, members of the German Lutheran church, went out to the lake to spend the day in picnicking. Feuerpfeil was one of the number. He, Jonny Schmidtman, Charles Seiker and Willie Croil went in swimming. They had a boat with them and crossed the lake, which is a small one, riding in the boat and swimming at intervals. Sieker started to swim back to the point from which they started and Feuerpfeil said he'd take one more dive before returning. He sprang from the boat but not being an expert swimmer struck flat on the water and sank. The shock no doubt deprived him of his breath and perhaps alarmed him so much that he became excited. He was seen to struggle in the water but did not reach the surface. The two in the boat shouted to Sieker, who was then near the opposite shore. He swam back and dove where Feuerpfeil had sunk but could not find him. People came to the city with the sad intelligence and grappling hooks and nets were sent out with which to recover the body. All night long the search was continued without success. At 7 o'clock in the morning Benson, who was trailing a weighted net, caught the body and brought it to the surface. The body was lying on the top of some growing weeds which seemed to support it and thus prevented it from sinking to the muddy bottom. The numerous lakes in Newton are kettle pots and very deep. They descend abruptly from the shore and wading in them is impossible. None but a reasonably good swimmer should ever bathe in them. Feuerpfeil was 24 years old. He was a bright young man, a favorite with all who knew him and was highly regarded by his employers. He was a man of excellent habits, always courteous and would have proved a successful man had his life been spared. The Manitowoc Pilot, July 21, 1892, Page 3 ******* [Fred FEUERPHEIL/cause: drowned]

OSCAR FICK KICK OF HORSE PROVES FATAL TO NEWTON MAN Oscar Fick Dies While on Way to Hospital Injuries which he suffered when he was kicked by a horse yesterday, caused the death of Oscar Fick, well known town of Newton farmer early today. Fick died in the ambulance of the Urbanek and Wattawa company while being conveyed from his home to the hospital in this city. Internal hurts caused death. Fick was found by his wife in the stable yesterday morning when she heard groans of the injured man who had been kicked by one of the horses he was caring for and was unable to help himself. She pulled the body from the stable and summoned a physician. It was deemed inadvisable to remove Mr. Fick at the time but this morning arrangements were made to have him brought to the hospital for care, but before the ambulance arrived in the city, death had overtaken the patient. Kicked in Abdomen Mr. Fick was kicked in the abdomen and internal injuries of fatal nature resulted. The horse responsible for the death of its owner had never been considered vicious and it is believed that the animal, annoyed by flies, became restless, and that Mr. Fick in entering or leaving the stall, was unexpectedly the victim of the fatal blow. Was 28 Years Old Born in the town of Newton August 6, 1893, Mr. Fick would have been 28 next Saturday. He had always made his home in Manitowoc county and was one of the progressive young farmers of the community. He is survived by his wife at Newton and by his mother, Mrs. Henry Fick, who makes her home with a daughter in this city. Three sisters, Mrs. Wm. Dorschner, Hamilton street, this city; Mrs. Walter Hoffman of Chicago and Mrs. Edward Sicker of Newton also survive. Funeral arrangements have not been made. Manitowoc Herald News, Tuesday, August 2, 1921 ******** FLIES RESPONSIBLE FOR MAN'S DEATH Manitowoc, Wis., Aud 5. - Flies were the indirect cause of the death of Oscar Fick, town of Newton farmer who was kicked by a horse. Fick had gone into the barn to feed the animal, which had been bothered by flies. While in the stall he was struck in the abdomen by a hind foot of the horse. When he failed to return to the house his wife went to the stables and found her husband groaning and helpless. He was removed to the local hospital and died after suffering 20 hours. The man was 28 years old. Racine Journal-News, Friday, August 5, 1921 ******** [bur. 08-06-1921/cause: accidental violence/bur. on Mrs. Emma Fick lot]
