The family lived where Dr. Gleason now resides. The funeral will be held on Monday in this city. Several relatives live here. Manitowoc Daily Herald, May 9, 1913 P. 8 ******** Former Resident Was Well Beloved By Many Friends Mrs. Frank Findlater of Sheboygan, whose burial was held at Evergreen this afternoon was widely known among the older residents of this city. Alice Toombs Findlater was born in Manitowoc Nov. 20th, 1867; she married Mr. Frank Findlater of Grand Rapids, Michigan Dec. 12th, 1895. After a ten years' residence there they removed to Sheboygan, which has since been their home. The news of the death of "Allie" as she was familiarly and lovingly called, will sadden the hearts of a large circle of friends to whom her sweet and charming nature had greatly endeared her. She had a peculiarly winning voice and manner, and a generosity unsurpassed. The Toombs' home here was for many years a social center and the gracious hospitality dispensed by the daughter of the house will never be forgotten by the recipients. ODY FISH Fish, GOP Activist, Ex-Regent, dies at 81 Pewaukee - Ody Fish, an activist in the Wisconsin Republican Party and longtime member of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents, died Tuesday, his family said. He was 81. "We knew he played many different roles in many people's lives. But for him, his most important roles were husband and father and for that we are incredibly fortunate," the family said in a statement. "It meant so much to us to see the comfort he received in knowing the positive impacts he had on so many people." Fish died early Tuesday at his home under hospice care as a cancer patient, said Sarah Fish of Boston, his oldest daughter. Fish served on the Board of Regents from 1970 to 1987 and was chairman of the Wisconsin Republican Party from 1965 to 1970. He also was a Republican national committeeman from Wisconsin from 1971 until 1984. From 1968 to 1970 he served on the executive committee of the National Republican Committee. Fish was a board member for Common Cause Wisconsin from 1998 until his death. In 1995, Fish was part of a citizens group that filed a lawsuit challenging former Republican Gov. Tommy Thompson's reorganization of state government that called for eliminating the state Department of Public Instruction and replacing the elected state Superintendent with a gubernatorial appointment. The State Supreme Court eventually ruled Thompson's plan was unconstitutional. Thompson said Tuesday he talked to Fish about three weeks ago. "He had a tremendous vision about death. He wanted all his associates and friends and political allies to call him and talk to him before he died.", the former Governor said. "I had a very nice chat with him. I wished him well. He said he really appreciated our friendship. I just complimented him on the way he was handling it." They didn't talk about Thompson seeking the GOP nomination for president in 2008. "We talked more about his accomplishment," Thompson said. Fish loved a good cigar, directing people and discussing politics and he left a legacy about doing better in life, Thompson said, "Improving the party, Improving politics, Improving business. And improving education. He was always looking at ways to make things better. That's a wonderful legacy to have." A visitation for Fish is planned Friday at Queen of the Apostles Church in Pewaukee from 4 to 7 pm with a funeral Mass to follow. Other survivors include his widow, Mary Ellen, and another daughter, Margaret Fish of Milwaukee. The Capital Times, Wed., Feb. 7, 2007
NICOLAS FISHBACH Nicolaus Fischbach had a tragic life which seems to stem from his time spent in the war. He enlisted as a private in Company "E", 35th Regiment Wisconsin Infantry in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin on December 31, 1863 for a three year period. He was mustered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and paid a $60 bounty. The roll recorded his name as Nicholas Fishback, born in Germany, occupation of farmer, age of 24, blue eyes, brown hair, height 5 ft. 7 in. and fair complexion. Sept. 2, 1864 they listed him as a deserter at St. Charles, Arkansas, but he was actually in a hospital at Memphis, Tennessee and voluntarily returned to duty on Dec. 23, 1864. He is then listed as a deserter on March 2, 1865 at Mobile Point, Alabama. According to his pension files, he walked all the way from Alabama back to Centerville still wearing his uniform. On the 1870 Federal Population Census for the Town of Centerville, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin page 39 (stamped 42) he was enumerated with his brother-in-law's family, Nicolaus Braun, line 4 through 12. They took care of him until he was later committed to the Manitowoc County Insane Asylum for the chronic insane in January of 1885 were he remained till his death on July 3, 1900. He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc City. (Note: He was Nicolaus Braun's brother-in-law (Centerville)) (from researcher/see contributors page) ******* [cause: general debility]
