CARL FRICKE (d. 1909) From Der Nord Westen, 15 July 1909: On Tuesday Mrs. Charles Fricke went back to the house, after doing chores in the barn of the family farm in Manitowoc Rapids, and found her husband, Charles Fricke, lying on the kitchen floor. He had been hit by a stroke which paralyzed his right side. EDWARD J. FRICKE (d. 1931) CORP. FRICKE DIES ON WAY HOME LOCAL SOLDIER STRICKEN ON BOARD TRANSPORT BRINGING HIM BACK FROM NICARAGUA Son of Ald. Edward Fricke, Enroute To State After 3 Years in Jungles, Dead as Vessel Docks at New York Says Message To Family Today Anticipated happiness in the return of a son and brother, who had not been home in years and was expected within the next two weeks, was turned to sorrow today for Alderman Edward Fricke of the Second ward, and his family, by a message from the war department announcing the sudden death aboard boat en route from Nicaragua, Central America, of Corporal Edward J. Fricke, of the First Engineering corps. No details of the death are given in the message, which came as a terribe shock to Alderman Fricke, the father, and other relatives of the young soldier. Body Here Tuesday The message was dispatched from New York, and it is presumed that the steamer upon which Corp. Fricke was en route home, had docked in that city. A wire was immediately forwarded asking that the body be shipped to Manitowoc for burial. A message received later said that the remains should reach Manitowoc Tuesday afternoon in which event the funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon. Started Home July 16 From information which the family had recieved it is beleived that Corp. Fricke and the unit to which he was assigned, which has been engaged in survey work on the new canal route for the United States government in Nicaragua for the last three years and was recently ordered to return to the states, planned to set sail on July 16. He was to have come directly home after arrival at New York. The message briefly states that he was stricken aboard boat and died en route. Member of Old Company H Corporal Fricke started his military career as a member of old Company H of this city and was in the unit when it was ordered to the Mexican border prior to 1917. Served in World War When the United States enterd the world war, Corp. Fricke was one of the men who joined the government forces and served two years. Later he enlisted in the U.S. regular army, became attached to the engineer corps, and served in Panama before being sent, three years ago, to Nicaragua, where, with the first engineering corps, a unit including seven Wisconsin men, he had been engaged in surveying the new canal route through Central America. Only a short time ago Secretary Hurley of the War department issued orders for the return of the unit, and Corp. Fricke had written that he expected to be home late in July or early in August. While his father and family here awaited his coming the message announcing his death arrived. Was Born in This City The deceased was 32 years of age at the time of his death, having been born in this city, where he made his home up to the time of entering the army service. He attended the local schools and was a popular and studious youth. He early entertained a liking for the mechanical, and at the time he went to the Mexican border had given much study to engineering work in the expectation that it would be his life's calling. A lover of adventure and with a desire to travel, he, after the world war, enlisted in the U.S. regular army and had advanced in the service. When the government organized the First engineering corps the fourteen officers and 131 enlisted men which made up the unit, for service in Nicaragua, were drawn from the men at that time in Panama and included the Manitowoc boy. The task set for the corps was one marked with many discomforts and no little danger from floods, jungle beasts, heat, earthquakes, insects, guerrilla warfare and a lack of the ordinary comforts and amusements of life and yet Corp. Fricke, in letters to relatives here, said that he was enjoing the experience in Nicaragua, and was finding the work to his liking. Only in recent letters, which were written in the early spring, Corp. Fricke had mentioned a desire to get back to civilization and to visit the old home in Manitowoc and he was looking forward to his return here with equal anticipation felt by his father and family to have him back. The Surviving Family Corp. Fricke was unmarried and is survived by his father, Ald. Edward Fricke, three sisters, Mrs. Clara Knell, Mrs. Phoebe Rosinsky and Mrs. Irene Owen, and by four brothers, Max, Walter, Reinhardt and Oscar, all except the last, residing here. Oscar Fricke is a resident of Sheboygan. No plans for the burial of the deceased can be made until word is received as to the shipment of the remains from New York. It is probable that a military funeral will be accorded with Company E, the Ameerican Legion and other veteran organizations taking part in the services. The sympathy of the communtiy is extended to Ald. Fricke and his family in their loss. Manitowoc Herald News, Saturday, August 1, 1931 P.1 ********** BODY OF CORP. FRICKE TO BE HERE TUESDAY Military Funeral Accorded Dead Soldier From This City at Delaware City, Del. Today A military funeral was accorded Corp. Edward Fricke, Manitowoc soldier at Delaware City, Del., today when the body was shipped from that city, enroute to Manitowoc where it is expected to arrive tomorrow afternoon. Funeral services here will be held Wednesday, details awaiting arrival of the body. Dispatches from Delaware City told today of the military funeral for Corp. Fricke and details of the tragic death which relatives here had been led to believe from dispatches received, had occurred aboard boat enroute, are given. Corp. Fricke was at a hospital at Delaware City. Disappointment Affected Mind Suffering from illness that apparently had been of some duration, Corp. Fricke, according to the report, was removed to the post hospital at Delaware City upon arrival of his transport. Melancholy because of his disappointment in not being able to come home as he had hoped and planned, Corp. Fricke yielded to the disorder of the mind and body and his body was found hanging from a transom in his hospital room by an attendant Saturday morning. A rope had been made from strips of bed clothing and the soldier boy was dead when found. Corp. Fricke is believed to have suffered from fever contracted in the jungles of Nicaragua and his mind gave way under the disappointment and illness from which he suffered. How long he had been ill is not known but from reports it is evident that his hope of returning home at once could not have been realized and melancholia gripped him to unbalance his mind. Plans have been completed for a military funeral to be held here Wednesday when the body will be laid to rest at Evergreen cemetery. The remains will probably be taken to the Wattawa, Urbanek & Schlei parlors upon arrival. It was announced that afternoon that the funeral services would take place at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon, from the home of Ald. Edward Fricke, father of the dead soldier, on Cleveland avenue. Interment will be at Evergreen. The deceased, it is expected, will be accorded a military funeral. Burial will be at Evergreen and the Rev. Bulley will officiate. Corporal Fricke, who had been in the service for twelve years and had been away from home all of that time, died suddenly while preparing to return here for a visit, a visit that his father had looked forward to for many weeks. He served in the World War and then enlisted in the regular army service and was at the Panama before being sent to Nicaragua three years ago. Corp. Fricke's death was a blow to us, coming as it did so soon after the return from two years hard service in Nicaragua. On the way home on the transport, the sergeant said, the Manitowoc boy developed severe pains but his condition was not believed critical. However, an examination by physicians at New York resulted in his being sent to the hospital at Fort Dupont, Del., for further observation. At this point, Sergt. Braendle said, Fricke's suffering became so intense that his mind became deranged and he took the easiest way out to end suffering. Popular With Command "Corp. Fricke was one of the most popular men of the command," said Sergt. Braendle. "He was the life of the camp all through the trying months taht we were engaged in surveying the propose canal route across Nicaragua. On our way to the country, we stopped at Panama and Fricke was well known there, where he had been stationed for a number of years and where he acted as an official upmire (sic) in a baseball league there. He never complained and this accounts for the fact that others in the unit did not know of his serious physical condition, until his death." Complete Canal Survey The 1st Engineers has completed the survey of the canal route. There were 240 men in the unit which was in charge of Col. Dan I. Sutton and the latter is now preparing his report to congress. In addition to staking out the route the unit also took soil tests all along the route. Work was hazardous on account of the extreme length of the rainy season in Central America, and poor sanitary conditions surrounding the workers in the field. To Cost $750,000,000 It is estimated that the cost of the proposed second ditch across the isthmus will be about $750,000,000 and the length of the canal would be 186 miles as compared to the 70 miles at Panama. The present canal, the sergeant reported, is now proving too narrow for the larger warships and commerce is bound to tax the present Panama canal to the limit in a few years. In additon the new route would cut off three to four days for commerce bound from New York and the Atlantic seaboard to the Pacific coast. Sergeant Braendle smiled when asked regarding the danger of bandits in the area in which the Engineers worked. "We never had any trouble with the guerillas," said the sergeant. "In fact we hired some of the toughest of them to work for us at fifty cents a day." Leaves to Rejoin Command "The boys in the command will long remember your Corporal Fricke," said his escort as he prepared to take the train this morning to return to his command at Fort Dupont, Delaware. "He was a fine type of young man and his unselfish devotion to duty in storm wrecked Managua, I believe is directly responsible for his untimely end." Funeral services for Corp. Fricke were held Wednesday afternoon from the Fricke home on Cleveland avenue with interment in Evergreen cemetery. ERNEST FRICKE BOY DROWNED IN RIVER NEAR N.W. BRIDGE A fatal accident occurred up river near the plant of the Malting company at 3 this afternoon when a young lad fell into the river and is reported to have drowned. The police responded to the call with grappling hooks and are dragging the river, but up to 4 o'clock the body had not been recovered. The report to the police was that the boy, with others, was swimming in the river. Later reports give the boys' name as Fricke, and that he was about 12 years old. Manitowoc Herald News, June 15, 1921 p.5 in archives actually the front page. ******** SEARCH HOURS BEFORE BODY OF BOY IS FOUND Police Recover Body of the Fricke Boy in River After almost five hours of searching by the police and a large force of volunteers, the body of Ernst Fricke, thirteen year old boy who lost his life by drowning in the river at the Chicago and Northwestern railway bridge at the foot of South Sixteenth street yesterday afternoon, was recovered at 7:50 last night. The body was brought to the surface by Officer William Diegel and John Jung at a spot that had been crossed and recrossed a hundred times by the searchers. It was hooked in the lobe of the ear. The search was rendered more difficult by the fact that the boy was unclothed, he having gone swimming without the formality of wearing without (sic) swimming trunks. Ernst Fricke with other boy's from the Jefferson school had gone to the dormitory to take their manual training lesson. They went to the river bank to play where Lawrence Kuhl and young Fricke decided they would take a swim although they were unable to convince any other boys to do the same. The boys disrobed and Fricke attmpted to swim to the bridge pier. When he had made about one-half the distance he suddenly called for help and after a short struggle went down never to reappear according to witnesses. Patrick Kealey, 1718 Wollmer street, said that none of the others were able to swim enough to save the boy and that while attempts were made to give him aid by reaching poles to him the effort failed. DIVE FOR BODY An alarm sounded which brought Victor Geisler and Henry C. Burger to the scene from the Burger office. Both men dived for the body at the spot at which he went down and Geisler says he felt sure he touched the body with his feet when he leaped into the water the first time. Upon diving again, however he could not find it and both he and Burger failed in their efforts to recover the body of the youth. The pulmotor had been rushed to the scene by the police and had the efforts of the men been successful there is a chance that the boy might have been resusitated. POLICE GET BODY Police officials who appeared at the bridge within a short time after the accident was reported began a search which was not ended until the body was recovered at nearly 8 o'clock. During the evening the police were assisted by a large number of volunteer searches many of whom dived time and again in the effort to locate the boy's body and chief Trochlell expresses the department's appreciation. It was finally hooked within a few feet of the spot where he went down although a heavy undertow was rpeorted by the divers. ONE OF FAMILY OF EIGHT Ernst Fricke was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Fricke who reside on South Fourteenth street just south of the city limits and was 12 years old having been born April 4, 1909. He was a member of the seventh grade at the Jefferson school and had passed the tests necessary for his advancement to the Eighth grade with unusually high standings. Besides his parents he is survived by two brothers, Robert and Elmer and five sisters, Clara, Alice, Viola, Ethel and Edna. The funeral of the unfortunate lad will be held from the home Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. GEORGE W. FRICKE (d. 1899) George Fricke of this city died on Saturday morning last. A few days previously he sustained some injury by the caving in of a clay bank, but it was thought nothing serious would result. He was doing quite well but suddenly fell into an unconscious state and remained so until death came. He was born in 1842 in Germany, but has long been a resident of the city where he owned and operated a brick yard. Manitowoc Pilot, Wis., Thursday, December 7, 1899 pg. 8 ******** On Tues. last week George Fricke, the well-known brick maker, was working in the clay pit of his brickyard when a wall collapsed. Mr. Fricke quickly jumped out of the way to avoid being buried by the mass, but his leg was struck and broken. He was taken home and put under a doctor's care. The bone was set, bound and everything appeared to be going well until Mrs. Fricke noticed Wed. night that he was in his bed unconscious and breathing heavily. Efforts to revive him were fruitless. He remained unconscious until his death at 9 a.m. Sat. The doctors are of the opinion that his death followed an accumulation of blood around the brain. The deceased was born in Germany in 1842 and came to America in his youth, spending many years in our city. He leaves a widow and 5 children. The funeral was Tues. Der Nord Westen, 07 Dec. 1899 ******** CROSSED DIVIDING LINE. George Fricke, Responds to Final Summons-Death at 9 a.m. George Fricke, the well known brick maker, crossed the dark chasm and entered into the great unknown at 9 o'clock this morning. His death was entirely unexpected and will come as a shock to his many friends, who were not aware that his condition was alarming. Several days ago Mr. Fricke, while at work at the brick-yard sustained the fracture of a limb by the caving in of a clay bank. He was removed to his home and a doctor summoned. The patient seemed to improve and suffered no pain whatever. Late Wednesday evening Mrs. Fricke noticed that her husband breathed heavily and with considerable effort. The attending physician was called, but it was found impossible to restore the patient to conciousness and after remain- ing in a stupor two days he answered the summons, breathing his last at 9 o'clock. Physicians are of the opinion that death was due to thrombus of the brain, a clogging of the blood vessels, in effect the same as appoplexy. It is not thought that Mr. Fricke sustained internal injuries in the accident of a few days ago, although the heavy breathing is thought to have been due to a thrombus of the lungs also. Deceased was born in Germany in August 1842. He has been a resident of this city many years and had conducted the brick yard most of the time. He was a careful, conservative business man, quiet and unassuming and thoroughly honest and upright. A good husband and a kind father, he will be sadly missed by the widow and five children, four sons and one daughter, who survive him. The funeral will probably be held Tuesday afternoon. HENRIETTE FRICKE AGED WOMAN MEETS ACCIDENTAL DEATH, FALLS IN CISTERN MRS. HENRIETTA FRICKE FOUND DEAD IN CISTERN IN CELLAR AT HOME ON CLEVELAND AVE., LAST EVENING WAS TRYING TO GET PAIL OF WATER AND FELL OVER WALL. Another cistern drowning, similar in circumstances to the Kiel tragedy of two days ago except that the drowning was clearly accidental occurred yesterday, Mrs. Henrietta Fricke, widow of the late William Fricke, being the victim. Mrs. Fricke's dead body was found in the cistern in the basement of the home on Cleveland avenue at 5 o'clock last night. Mrs. Fricke, who despite the fact that she was 62 years of age, insisted upon doing her work, had planned to wash and was drawing water from the cistern with a pail, the pump being out of order. The cistern is located in the basement and is a large tank, bricked in by a wall about four feet high and twelve inches wide. Mrs. Fricke had evidently leaned over too far in attempting to draw the pail, to which a rope was attached, and lost her balance, falling into the water. Owing to her advanced age and hampered by her clothing she was unable to save herself. No one was home at the time the accident happened, a son, Erwin, who made his home with his mother, being absent at work and another son, William, who with his wife was visiting here, had left the house in an automobile for a visit to other relatives. Mr. Fricke had planned to return to Milwaukee today and his mother was to accompany the party or make the trip via train with her daughter -in-law. Discovery of the body was made by Gus. Fricke, another son who searched the house at 5 o'clock. Finding his mother absent he had presumed that she had accompanied the auto party but a few minutes later when the party returned and said that Mrs. Fricke had remained at home, a search of the house and grounds was made for her, and upon visiting the cellar evidences of the tragic death of the aged woman were found and investigation revealed the body in the cistern. A hurried call was made for Dr. Gleason while the body was being taken from the water but nothing could be done, it being the opinion of Dr. Gleason that Mrs. Fricke had been dead more than an hour when found. The pulmotor was brought to the Fricke home but was of no use, it being too late. Mrs. Fricke was a pioneer resident of the city, having made her home here during the greater part of her life. Her husband died last December and his death was a great shock to her. A son died a year ago and grieved much over the bereavements though she had never brooded over her loss. Yesterday she attended to her house- hold duties and had worked about her garden as she was accustomed to do. Five children survive Mrs. Fricke, being Mr. Samuel Price of Chicago, Mrs. O. H. Nelson of Milwaukee, William of Milwaukee, Gustave and Erwin of this city. Funeral services will be held from the late home on Cleveland avenue Monday after- noon at 2 o'clock.
