ALBERT FRISCHMUTH KILLED ON TRACK, BODY IN DITCH ALL NIGHT Dead Body of Franklin Man Found Frozen in Pool of Water. RELATIVES SEARCH ALL NIGHT FOR HIM Frozen in a pool of water in a ditch at the side of the Chicago & North Western Railway Co's tracks near Rockwell, several miles from this city on the Green Bay short line, the dead body of Halver Frischmuth, a town of Franklin man was found early today and removed to the home of relatives. Frischmuth, from all appearances, was run down by a C. & N.W. train Friday night and the accident was undiscovered until morning when the crew of train No 217, which leaves here for Green Bay at 7:30, reported the finding of the body Frischmuth who was 57 years of age and a bachelor, made his home with a brother William Frischmuth in the northern part of Franklin on the line of the town of Kossuth. The unfortunate man left home late Friday afternoon without a word to the family and nothing was known as to his intentions. When he failed to return late in the evening his brothers William and Gustave instituted search for him in the neighborhood, visiting neighbors but no trace of the man could be found and the search was continued until early in the morning. Relatives of Frischmuth did not learn of the man's fate until nearly noon when they were informed of the accident by Coroner Louis Falge who was at Rockwell to investigate. When the report of the finding of the body was made by train 217 to the Manitowoc station the section crew was sent out to pick the body up and care for it, and the crew had not located the relatives of the dead man. Frischmuth's body is at the home of his brother William and the funeral will be held from there. Frischmuth it is believed was run down by the train which reached this city from Green Bay at 5:45 and he was probably run down while walking on the tracks. Frischmuth's right leg was severed below the knee and he had a fracture of the skull in the front of the head. The man's body must have been thrown from the tracks when struck by the train as it had rolled over an embankment several feet high into the ditch below. The body landed in a pool of water and mud in the bottom of the ditch and was found tightly frozen in the water. Frischmuth according to statements made to the authorities had not been in perfect health for some time and for several weeks it had been feared that his mind had become affected. The man was of quiet, retiring dispostion, something of a recluse and was little known to his neighbors. He was a student and was an ardent supporter of socialistic doctrines, it is said. Coroner Falge who investigated the case decided that there was no necessity for holding an inquest with Dist. Atty. Healy decided not to call one. The funeral of Frischmuth will be held early in the week. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Saturday, April 1, 1911 P.1 ******* Despite the different name, this date and age match.

CARL FRISCHMUTH (d. 1919) Carl Frischmuth, who lives with his family on the corner of 15th and Division Streets, but who works for his brother who has a farm at the northern city limits, as usual went to the farm Monday morning. When he arrived at his brother’s house it was empty because everyone was working in the fields. Frischmuth has been sick for a while and occasionally suffers great pain so that life is often wearisome. He took a rifle from the wall and shot himself in the mouth. The bullet went through his head but didn’t kill him, so Frischmuth picked up a knife and tried to cut his throat. His brother, who heard the shot, came in to find his brother lying in his blood. Dr. Roberts was immediately called and other than stopping the bleeding there is little hope for his recovery. Frischmuth is 52 years old and has a wife and 4 children. Upon regaining consciousness he said that his pain caused him to do the deed. Der Nord Westen, 20 May 1909 ******** MAY HAVE TRIED TO END LIFE Carl Frischmuth Found at Home of Brother, Shot in Mouth and Throat Cut Found in a room of the house lying in a pool of his own blood, with a gaping .22 calibre wound in his mouth and a gash in his throat, Carl Frischmuth, an aged resident of this city is thought to have attempted suicide at the home of brother, Gus Frischmuth on the farm northwest of the the city. Dr. Roberts, summoned hastily, succeeded in stopping the flow of blood from the man's wounds and resusitated him so that there is a slight chance for recovery though the shock may yet cause his death. The alleged attempt at suicide was made with a .22 rifle and when this proved unavailing, the man is said to have cut his throat with a knife though the jugular was not severed. After regaining consciousness, the man was asked whether anyone was responsible for his condition and he replied in the negative. There is no motive for the attempt and some mystery surrounds the case. Frischmuth resides in this city on the corner of 15th and Division where he has a wife and family but works for his four brothers who own a farm. A telephone call to the farm this afternoon failed to reach the family so that his late condition could not be learned. Frischmuth is a brother of Mrs. Conrad Meyer of this city. ANTON MARTIN FRITSCH TWO RIVERS MAN DIES FROM COLD AND EXPOSURE ANTON FRITCH (sic), EMPLOYE OF WISCONSIN HOUSE, FOUND FROZEN TO DEATH IN YARDS AT HOTEL THIS MORNING MAN HAD BEEN ILL, MAY HAVE FAINTED IS THEORY Anton Fritch (sic) an aged two Rivers man, was found dead in the yard of the Wisconsin House in that city at an early hour this morning, a victim of cold and exposure. Fritch’s body was found, face down, a short distance from the rear entrance of the hotel where it is believed he was overcome while making his way to the house from the stables and where it had probably remained during the night in a temperature of 8 degrees below, which prevailed during the night and early morning. Fritch was last seen alive at 7 o’clock last night when he left the hotel to attend to chores at the stables, the man having been employed as a hostler at the Wisconsin house for several years past. It is thought that in returning to the house Fritch, who had not been in robust health, was overcome and may have fainted and succumbed, the cold being the most severe of the winter last night at Two Rivers. Fritch had been about the hotel in the early evening and as usual visited the barn to close it before retiring. The man usually made his way to his room without attention and it was supposed that he had retired when he did not appear about the house. Employes of the hotel, which is conducted by John Reinert, found the dead body of Fritch at 6 o’clock this morning and report was made to the Two Rivers police who took charge of the remains. The body was lying face downward and examination showed no indication of injury or that the man had been attacked. Coroner Falge of this city was notified and in the absence of District Attorney Healy, who is at Madison, communicated with the Two Rivers police and investigated the case, later deciding that there was no necessity for an inquest as Fritch’s death had, from all reports, been due to cold and exposure. The body was cared for by Mr. Reinert and will be buried at Two Rivers. Fritch had been employed at the Wisconsin House three or four years but little is known of the man’s family. He is known to have had one daughter who is believed to reside in the town of Gibson but further than this his relatives are unknown. For some time Fritch had complained of being ill and the theory of the authorities is that the man, while returning to the house, may have fallen or have become faint and that he was unable to help himself and died from exposure. A year ago an aged resident of Two Rivers froze both hands and had a close call from meeting death during the extreme cold weather which prevailed but Fritch’s death is the first in the county in years due to that cause. The burial will be held at Two Rivers and unless relatives appear to take charge of the body, Mr. Reinert will arrange for the funeral. Manitowoc Daily Herald, February 1, 1913 P. 1 ******* SAVED FOR DAUGHTER HE GAVE TO OTHERS 15 YEARS AGO; LEFT $300 IN BANK FOR THE GIRL John Fritch (sic), Aged Man Found Dead at Two Rivers Saturday, Former Resident Here and Buried in City Today Three hundred dollars, the savings of years from a small wage, is in the Two Rivers bank to the credit of a John Fritch, the aged man found frozen to death in that city Saturday and the money will go to his daughter, a girl of fifteen who had never known Fritch as a father, having been adopted by a family in this city at birth. CHRISTIAN FROHLICH DEATH BY DROWNING The Manitowoc River Claims Another victim. On Tuesday last a young man named Herman Froelik (sic) of this city obtained employment at the coal docks of the Wisconsin Central R.R. and started to work Wednesday morning. He was wheeling dirt along the edge of the dock when in some unaccountable manner he fell into the water. The first intimation his partner had that an accident had occurred was the empty wheelbarrow seen floating on the river. Indications point to that fact that the young man must have been struck by the wheelbarrow in falling as he never rose to the surface and hence must have been stunned. Twenty minutes later when the body was fished out with grapline (sic) hooks one eye was missing. The remains were taken to the undertaking establishment of Anton Vogt. Deceased was of German descent and 35 years of age. He came to this city in December last, and boarded at the Clipper City House where he had $455 in paper and $10 in gold deposited with the proprietor. He has relatives living in Sheboygan. RAY G. FROSCH County Stove Pioneer, Dies Grimms - Ray G. Frosch, veteran hardware and automobile dealer and the first in Wisconsin to introduce oil and gas burning stoves in the rural area, died at his home in this village Thursday night. He was 80. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. John St. James Lutheran Church, Reedsville. The Rev. John Wendland will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Born April 18, 1877, at Wayside, Brown County, son of the late Frank and Elizabeth Beattie Frosch, he began his business enterprise several years before the turn of the century and a year before he married Emma Rader at Sheboygan Falls June 7, 1899. The couple celebrated its 58th wedding anniversary this year. The store he launched at Wayside in 1898 throve and three years later a similar business was established at Grimms. In addition to the hardware store a grain elevator was erected and along with it a garage. When a fire destroyed the hardware store and garage in 1930, only the hardware business was re-established in an adjacent location. At that time the Frosch Brothers partnership was dissolved. Frank Jr. had been in business with him and previous to that their father had been associated in the enterprises. Years before bottle gas stoves were available in rural areas, Mr. Frosch sold coal and wood burning ranges. Not satisfied with this, he introduced oil burning units which could be installed in existing stoves, and a number of years ago took over agency for a gas firm which made it possible for him to sell an appliance he believed would help his rural friends live with more comfort. In addition to serving many years on the Town of Cato School Board he was postmaster for more than 30 years, retiring in 1947 under the compulsory age program. Five years later he retired from active participation in all business and devoted his interests to gardening. He was a charter member of the choir of the church at Reedsville. Surviving are his wife, a son, Maitland, of Minneapolis, two daughters, Mrs. Samuel M. Kuenzi, of Watertown, Wis., and Mrs. Francis Dietl of Manitowoc; two sisters, Mrs. Walter Schlicker, of Detroit and Mrs. Alfred Halzer, of Neptune Beach, Fla.; and a grandson. ANNA FUCHS From Der Nord Westen, 27 Sep. 1900: Death in Maple Wood on Thurs. of Mrs. Adam Fuchs after a long illness. The deceased, a sister of Heinrich Scherer here, formerly lived in Town Manitowoc Rapids but about 3 yrs. ago moved to Maple Wood, Door County. She is survived by a number of grown children. The deceased was born 10 Oct. 1823 in Hesse and came to America in 1848. Her body was brought here and buried Sat. in the city cemetery. ******* [cause: old age]

ANTON FUCHS Death of 72 yr. old Anton Fuchs on Tues., 30 Jan. He came here in 1848 and settled in Town Kossuth, and later he established a small confections shop on Manitowoc’s Northside. He leaves his wife and one son. Another son was lost 25 yrs. ago on the steamship “Sea Bird”. Der Nord Westen, 01 Feb. 1894 ******** [Anton Fuchs/bur. 02-01-1894/age 71 yrs./cause: old age] ******** SUICIDE. Yesterday, an old man named Fuchs, living near the livery stable of Contway & Moran, shot himself through the body and is now lying at the point of death. In the morning he went to the hardware store of Wagner & Rend, and purchased a revolver. After loading it he went into his little confectionery store and seeing some men standing on the sidewalk, waved his hand toward them and said “good-bye.” He then placed the revolver against his breast and pulled the trigger. The wound is a very dangerous one and probably will prove fatal. Fuchs is about 60 years of age. He has for some time been addicted to drink and was of a moody, morose disposition. His habits led to domestic difficulties and his despondency must have reached the limit of insanity. Hard drink was no doubt the cause of the deed. He confesses having intended to kill his wife before attempting his own life, but was withheld on account of the sorrow it would cause his son. He expresses the hope that he will not recover. Manitowoc Pilot, August 31, 1882 P. 3 ******** Old Fuchs’ flag is still there. The old man was economical even in his attempt upon his own life. The pistol with which he perpetrated the deed was purchased after a well sustained attempt to beat down the price, and a plea to “throw in” the cartridges at least. Manitowoc Pilot, September 7, 1882 P. 3 ******** FUCHS, the man who tried to kill himself some time ago, and who did put a bullet in his body, “nearest the heart,” is able to be up. A writ of quo warranto should be served upon him, or some other legal proceeding instituted to make him show cause why he didn’t die and thus give an opportunity for holding an inquest. Manitowoc Pilot, October 19, 1882 P. 3 ******** (The following is for his son) IN PROBATE - Manitowoc County Court. In the matter of the estate of John Fuchs, deceased. On reading filing the petition of Anton Fuchs, of said county, representing among other things that John Fuchs, late of said county, on the 9th day of April, A.D. 1868, near Waukegan, Ill., died intestate, leaving no goods and chattels and no estate within this state, and that the petitiioner is the father of said deceased, and praying that administration of said estate be to him granted, it is ordered that said petition be heard before the judge of this court on Wednesday, the 23rd day of March A.D. 1870 at 10 o'clock a.m. , at my office in said county. EDWARD FULLMER Edw. Fullmer Dies From Sudden Attack of Heart Failure. DEATH ABOARD STR. WATTS UP RIVER. Stricken by an attack of heart failure as he was about to board the boat for his day’s work, Edward Fullmer, employed as care taker aboard the steamer Watts, which is in winter quarters here, died suddenly at 6:30 this morning. Physicians who were summoned found life extinct and Coroner Falge was called but no inquest was held, the cause of death being established beyond question as heart trouble. Mr. Fullmer’s death occurred just as he was about to enter the door of the cabin on the Watts preparatory to starting his day’s work. As he passed through the door, other men on the boat saw him ___, gasp and suddenly fall forward and when they reached him, life was extinct. In falling the stricken man struck the stove but the body fell away from it and was not burned or injured. Mr. Fullmer, who had been a resident of the city for some years, had followed the lakes during the summers employed most of the time as a marine cook. Last fall, however, he accepted a position as watchman and caretaker on the steamer Watts which was laid up near the Wisconsin Central bridge and had been working aboard the boat, assisting in fitting out for the season. He was about to engage upon his day’s work when stricken. A widow and one daughter, an adopted child, residing in this city, survive Mr. Fullmer. Decedent was a brother to the late Joseph Fullmer whose death occurred at Milwaukee six weeks ago and is a brother to the Sister Superior at the hospital. He was 52 years of age, having been born on March 4th, 1858. Previous to coming to this city, the family resided at Chicago and Milwaukee. Funeral arrangements have not been completed and announcement will appear later. CAPT ALBERT G. FULTON CAPT. A. G. FULTON, SAILED FIRST BOAT HERE, DIES, AGED 82 PIONEER VESSELMAN AND EARLY DAY FARMER OF COUNTY PASSES FROM EARTH AT HOME WEST OF CITY SUNDAY MORNING. LOCATED ON FARM AT RAPIDS IN EARLY 60S. A long and useful life came to a close at midnight Saturday when Capt. Albert G. Fulton, one of the best known pioneers of Manitowoc county, quietly passed on his way to another world. Capt. Fulton’s death occurred at his farm home west of the city, his demise being due to an illness of several months which his advanced age made it impossible for him to combat. Capt. Fulton was in his eighty-second year, having been born February 23, 1832, and since 1865 he had been a continuous resident of Manitowoc county, though he had made his home here previous to that time as well. Capt. Fulton was born in St. Clair Co., Michigan. Capt. Fulton was a pioneer vesselman of the lakes and for twenty years or more engaged in sailing, retiring in 1862 when he engaged in farming here. Capt. Fulton enjoyed the distinction of having sailed the first schooner built in Manitowoc, the Citizen, and he was in charge of a number of other boats during his lake career which he started at the age of 10 years. The early years in the life of Capt. Fulton were distinguished by the hardships and privations which invariably devolved upon the pioneers of any country. He received no educational advantages in youth, never having attended schools in his life, but being an ambitious youth, persistent, he eventually learned to read and acquired the key to the door of knowledge and became a well informed man. During his entire life Capt. Fulton devoted much time to reading and kept pace with subjects of current interest, the closing days of his life being brightened by his interests in affairs of the nation. At the age of ten years, Capt. Fulton assumed the duties of manhood by becoming selfsupporting and at that age engaged as assistant to a cook on a small lake vessel. At the age of 14 he was able to go before the mast and from that time performed a sailor’s duty and four years later became mate. In 1852, at the age of 20, he was made master of the schooner Defiance, a lumber schooner, which plied between this city and Chicago. On one of the trips of the host during a severe northeastern gale, the boat was capsized and Capt. Fulton and his crew were at the mercy of the waves for four days before their signals of distress brought them relief. Capt. Fulton often told of this experience which was one of the worst which he ever passed through in his years on the lakes. Years later Capt. Fulton was again in danger as a passenger of North Uba, when the boat capsized off Racine, but escaped with his life. Capt. Fulton was master of the first schooner ever built in Manitowoc, “The Citizen,” built by the late P. P. Smith, and which Capt. Fulton sailed for years. The boat was two-master. In twenty years on the lakes Capt. Fulton boasted of a record of never having lost a man. In 1862 Capt. Fulton left the lakes and established a wood and coal yard at Chicago which he conducted for three years, at the expiration of which period he returned to Manitowoc and made his home here for a year, at which time he purchased the farm near Silver Lake where he made his home to the time of his death. This farm had never been under cultivation and was entirely without improvements when it came into his possession, but industry and energy, with perseverance brought the farm into one of the well tilled properties of the county and for thirty-seven years Capt. Fulton continued in management of the farm, retiring in 1899, though he continued his residence on the property up to his death. Capt. Fulton was married in 1855 to Elizabeth Johnson, who preceded him in death twenty years ago. Seven children survive, being Mrs. Philip Smith, who resided with her husband and father on the old homestead; Mrs. L. J. Anderson, Mrs. Fred Christiansen, this city; Mrs. L. J. Bodwin, of Owen, Wis.; Mrs. Adelbert Schmidt of Wausau; Miss Emmelie Fulton, this city, and Charles Fulton of Buffalo, N.W. With exception of the son, Charles, all of the children were with Capt. Fulton when death came to him. Few men of the county were more widely or favorably known than Capt. Fulton, and the announcement of his death will bring a keen pang of remorse to many who knew him and to whom his sturdy upright character was best known. One of the last public events in which Capt. Fulton evinced interest was the recent reorganization here of a camp of the Sons of Veterans. He was much interested in the movement and gave it his hearty support and had he been able to be present he would have attended the organization meeting. Funeral services for Capt. Fulton will be held from the home of his daughter, Mrs. L. J. Anderson, North Thirteenth street, this city, tomorrow afternoon at 2o’clock and will be conducted by Rev. Axtell of the Presbyterian church. Interment will be at Evergreen. Manitowoc Daily Herald, November 17, 1913 P. 1 ******** [bur. 11-18-1913/cause: niemina] ******** Friday night "there was a sound of revelry" at Capt. Fulton's farm, near the shores of Silver Lake. It was all on account of the new granary, which the captain has recently built. Several couples from the city were in attendance on the festivities, and among them as a matter of course, was a reporter of the Times. The Wells boys and Louis Pleuss funished the music, to the strains of which about thirty couples moved in the mazes of the waltz. It was an enjoyable affair throughout, and fully sustained the captain's reputation as a genial host. Manitowoc Lake Shore Times, Tuesday, July 25, 1882 P.1

HENRY FULTON Death by suicide on Mon. in Town Manitowoc Rapids, of Henry Fulton, son of Capt. A.G. Fulton. The deceased was married and the father of 3 children. He worked on his father's farm, but had been afflicted with consumption for a long time. Burial was Tues. in the city cemetery. Der Nord Westen, 05 Sept. 1895 ******** On Monday morning at 8 o'clock, Henry Fulton, a well known farmer living four miles west of Manitowoc, committed suicide. Just before carrying out his intentions, he told his boy that he was going to the granary and would return in a short while. Soon after the report of a gun was heard, and upon hurrying to the scene, the family found he had blown out his brains with a shot gun which lay beside him. The shock so prostrated Mrs. Fulton that it is feared she will lose her mind. Mr. Fulton was 40 years old and resided on the farm of his father, Capt. Fulton, near Silver Lake. A severe attack of pneumonia last spring, left him in ill health and partially incapacitated him for work. Being naturally, a vigorous man, the thoughts of his condition brought on fits of despondency which finally resulted in the sad deed just described. He is survived by his wife and three children, and his aged parents.
