JOHN P. FRANKE Old Christmas Card Has Brought Son To Funeral A tattered old Christmas card, found among the effects of John Franke, aged 54, North 4th street, who died Monday, brought a son to his funeral and enabled the city relief department to contact his three other children. Franke, a carpenter who had been unemployed for some time, had steadfastly refused city aid. He had no known friends or relatives and his body, when he died, was turned over to the relief department for burial. There was nothing to be found among his belongings to indicate that he had friends or relatives except the Christmas card which contained a rather indistinct name and address. On a wild chance the relief department followed the lead, contacted a friend of the man and was in turn directed to four of his children. One of his sons, Theodore Franke of Minneapolis, came to Manitowoc yesterday for the funeral. The other three children are Ingrid, of Greenwood, Wis., Wilmer of the state of Washington; and Carvin of Minneapolis. Frank was born in Germany, his son said, and came to Manitowoc from Minneapolis. AUGUSTA FRANSWAY Death from a stroke on Thurs. last week of Mrs. Frank Fransway, a former resident of our city, in Pikeshill, N.Y., where she was visiting. The deceased, (nee Auguste Rosinsky), was born in Manitowoc 35 yrs. ago but has been living for several years in Oshkosh. She is survived by her husband and 2 children and here in Manitowoc by her sorrowing father and a brother. The body was brought here and committed to the ground on Sunday. Der Nord Westen, 02 July 1903 ******* Former Resident Died in East. A message to relatives here Saturday conveyed the sad intelligence of the death in New York of Ms. August Franzway (sic), a former resident of this city. Decedent was 35 years of age and is survived by a husband and two children. The body was brought here for burial. Mrs. Franzway was a sister of Herman Rosinsky, the S. Eighth street furniture dealer. Manitowoc Pilot, Thursday, July 2, 1903 p.1 ******* (Note: Since the ages don't match, I called the cemetery office and here is what she said: [The entry you have from the tombstone is on the same lot as the entry I have, so I have to assume they are the same person and that the tombstone is incorrect, since she probably didn't die the year after she was buried. The original burial register from 1903 says she is age 54 and that she died of apoplexy. There is no other information. She is buried on the same lot as Francis Fransway (1845-1910). I am going to assume that she was born sometime between 1849 (based on age) and 1852 (marker date), which would make sense since she would be a few years younger than Francis. The obituary sounds like it could be her, except for the age, so I am thinking there is a typo, maybe they transposed the age (35 instead of 53) or it should have been 55 instead of 35. I just looked in the Lot Diagram book for and I see that the lot was originally purchased by William Rosinsky and was paid for 6/3/1903. So now I definitely think it's her and there is just a typo in the obit./Augusta Fransway/bur. 06-28-1903/age 54 yrs./cause: apoplexy/lot purchased by William Rosinsky and was paid for 6/3/1903.]

EMMA FRANZ Emma Franz, 76, Drowns Self In Basement Tank City firemen were called to the residence of Mrs. Emma Franz, 76, of 811 South 19th street late Tuesday afternoon to remove the body of Mrs. Franz from a basement cistern. Coroner Arthur Teitgen, who was summoned, pronounced the death a suicide by drowning. The body was discovered by her son, Oscar, of route 2, Manitowoc who with neighbors broke screen door fastenings to gain entrance. The son had come to the city in response to a letter from his mother, written late last week, asking him to take her on a business trip downtown. There was only a 20 inch opening between the top of the cistern and the basement joists. Mrs. Franz, the coroner said, used a ladder to climb up and probably dove headlong through the small opening on top of the cistern. Firemen were forced to cut away a portion of the wooden wall of the cistern to remove the body. Mrs. Franz has not been in the best of health for several months. Neighbors do not recall seeing her since Sunday. A carefully folded copy of the Herald-Times of Saturday night, Sept. 2, lay on the dining room table. The coroner announced there will be no inquest. JOHN FRANZ (Saturday dateline) What has been long expected occurred yesterday with the death of John Franz whom we had reported as having suffered a stroke several weeks ago. One had hoped that Mr. Franz would overcome the illness and be returned to his former health, but that hope went unfulfilled as he grew weaker and weaker until his death yesterday (Friday). John Franz was one of the best known and eminent residents of our county. He was born 15 Nov. 1832 in Hockelheim, Kreis Wetzlar, and after his marriage came to America in 1856, arriving in this county on 02 July, and settled in Two Rivers. There he was employed in one of the several factories until 1864 when he lost an arm in an accident and had to give up his position. In 1865 the residents of Two Rivers elected Mr. Franz to the office of Village Treasurer, a position he filled for several years. In 1868 he was elected Registrar and moved to Manitowoc where he lived ever since. He filled that office until 1878 when he and his son established a land and loan office under the name Franz, Schmitz & Co. where he worked until his illness. Mr. Franz, who belonged to the Order of Odd Fellows and to the United Old Workers, is survived by his widow as well as 3 daughters –Mrs. Fritz Beeker, Mrs. A.J. Schmitz, and Mrs. Dr. W.G. Kemper, as well as numerous grandchildren. The above mentioned son died 8 yrs. ago. The funeral will be held Mon. afternoon at 2 p.m. from the funeral home at 917 Jay Street. Der Nord Westen, 01 Oct. 1903 ********** The funeral of John Franz, whose passing we reported in our Sat. edition, was attended by an extraordinarily large number of mourners, a testimonial to the esteem which the deceased enjoyed in our city. Pastor Gray delivered the funeral oration. The German Odd Fellows Lodge and the vocal groups “Freier Sängerbund” and “Concordia” gave last honors to their departed brother. The rites of the Odd Fellow’s Order were observed at graveside and the singing groups delivered a dirge. Among the immediate family members attending the funeral was Mrs. John Mehl of Milwaukee, the deceased’s only sister. Mr. Mehl is in Germany at this time and could not attend. We wish to add to our biography of the deceased; he had also served for many years as a member of the Democratic Congressional District Committees and of the State Central Committees. Der Nord Westen, 08 Oct. 1903 ********** DEATH OF JOHN FRANZ John Franz, an old resident of the county and one of the best known and most esteemed men in the county died at his home in Manitowoc last Friday morning, the result of the stroke of paralysis which he sustained about two months ago. The stroke of paralysis came upon him while he was sitting in his office and although he had all that solicitous attention and medical skill could give him there was never a time since that terrible messenger of Death, whose coming was so silent and unexpected, touched and benumbed him that there were any hopes for his recovery. He breathed his last on Friday morning surrounded by his beloved family. John Franz was born in Wetzler, Prussia on November 15, 1832. In 1856 he came to America and took up his residence in this city where he continued to reside until he was elected Register of Deeds in 1868 when he moved to Manitowoc which city was his home until his death. While a resident of this city, he lost his left arm through a comparatively slight injury, but which resulted in blood poisoning and amputation was necessary. This accident probably changed his life into new channels and did him more good than injury, for he took up the study of English and qualified himself for public office and for business in which the mind rather than the hands is the chief factor. He held office while a resident of the city and made many warm friends here. Indeed, he always had a great fondness for Two Rivers and Two Rivers people and many Two Rivers people give him their entire confidence in the management of their business affairs. He held the office of Register of Deeds then years and on retiring from that office began a broker, insurance and conveyancing business which was quite renumerative and through which he accumulated a fine fortune. John Franz was a very successful man in a social and political way as well as in business. He won friends easily and was probably as well known and as widely trusted and respected in all parts of the state as any Manitowoc County man has ever been. In the politics of the state he was a conspicuous figure for years and his counsel was often sought in the management of party affairs. He was a democrat of the old school and was frequently a party representative in state and national gatherings. His funeral took place yesterday afternoon and was one of the largest ever seen in Manitowoc. He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in accordance with Odd Fellow rites, Rev. Grey of St. James church serving as chaplain. JOHN FRANZ JR. (d. 1896) Unanticipated sudden death early Sat. morning of John Franz, Jr., the only son of our prominent citizen, Mr. John Franz. The deceased had been ill for 4 weeks with rheumatic fever and although it is painful, it is seldom fatal. On the evening before his death he was feeling so well that it was hoped he would be fully recovered in a few days. During the night he was restless and about 10 o’clock, Dr. Kemper was called. After Dr. Kemper arrived, the young man’s temperature registered 107, then increased to 107-1/2, 108, and finally at 108-1/2 degrees. The doctor summoned the family in anticipation of death, which occurred at 2 a.m. John Franz, Jr. was born in Two Rivers 25 Aug. 1861 and came to Manitowoc when his father moved here following his election. After leaving school, he studied leather crafting with Mr. H. Schmiedecke here in Manitowoc, for whom he worked 4 yrs. He then went to Minnesota and worked for a year before returning here and working in the real estate and insurance business that his father had established. The deceased was married to a daughter of Mr. Frank Zeman, a marriage that produced 2 children – ages 7 and 9. He is also survived by three married sisters. The funeral took place Tues. afternoon with a long funeral procession. Der Nord Westen, 19 Mar. 1896 ******* John Franz Jr., died on Friday of last week. Although he had been ill for some time with inflammatory rheumatism, there was no fear of a fatal termination. The day before his death he had entire relief from pain and both he and his friends regarded this as an indication of the beginning of permanent recovery. The disease took a turn for the worse during the night and soon ended in his death. He was born in Two Rivers in 1861 and soon after came to this city with his parents. Here he was educated and went into business with his father. He was married to Mary Zeman in 1885 and leaves a widow and four children. For some time he was actively connected with the business of John Franz & Son as the junior member. He developed considerable business tact and shrewd knowledge of men. He gave special attention to the insurance business and showed excellent judgment in its management. He grew in manliness as he grew to maturity and in business dealings his word was regarded as absolute. He was generous and public spirited. Increased responsibility drew out the exercise of native powers and always was a spur to development. He was in every respect a good citizen, one who had capacity for growth, to whom added years made the ideals of life higher. WILLIAM FRAZIER (d. 1931) Long Illness is Fatal to William Frazier DEATH OCCURS EARLY TODAY AT HOSPITAL 50 Years of Active Business Life in the Community is Brought To a Close Complications from which he had suffered for the past two and one-half years early today claimed the life of William Frazier, 71, pioneer business man of the city and for nearly 50 years identified with its civic-commercial interests. Death occurred at the hospital shortly before 8 o’clock after Mr. Frazier had been a patient at the institution for the past week. For many years prior to his retirement several years ago, Mr. Frazier was engaged in the furniture and undertaking business here and was one of the most widely known citizens of the community. He started his business career as a partner with his brother, Charles, in the C. & W. Frazier company in 1888. The partnership engaged in business at Eighth and York Sts., and later at 700-712 York street and when the business changed hands, Mr. Frazier established a mortuary on North Eighth street. He remained there for several weeks before disposing of his interests and for several years he conducted his business from his home at 520 Buffalo street. Illness halted his business activities about three years ago and he since has lived a retired life. Here for Many Years Mr. Frazier was a resident of Manitowoc city for many years, coming here with his mother in 1863. He was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, on September 30, 1860, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Frazier. His father died when he was a boy and his mother brought the five children to this country and directly to Manitowoc when Mr. Frazier was three years old. Two of the children died a …(line underinked).. Mrs. Hamman of Sheboygan, died a short while ago. He received his early education in the common schools of Manitowoc and at the age of 10 years became a sailor on the Great Lakes. He continued to follow that vocation for about 15 years, retiring with the rank of mate. Upon leaving the lake, he joined his brother in business and was married to Miss Louisa Dischel, a native of Germany, during the same year, the ceremony being performed on August 3. The partnership of C. & W. Frazier became one of the best known in this vicinity and for years the concern was one of the largest of its kind in this part of Wisconsin. Served on County Board Mr. Frazier was a life-long member of the Republican party and was active in its affairs and direction locally. He served his ward as a member of the county board for several terms but held no other political office. Surviving him in addition to his widow, are two children, Miss Anita Frazier, a member of the faculty of the public schools here, and Assistant City Treasurer Roland A. Frazier. A brother, Charles, also of Manitowoc, is the only other immediate relative to survive him. Of a retired disposition, Mr. Frazier was unusually popular with a large circle of friends to whom the news of his death today proved a decided shock. Although much interested in the persons with whom he came in contact, he was not inclined toward assuming membership in fraternal organizations, his only affiliation being with the Maccabees. Funeral on Wednesday Funeral services for Mr. Frazier will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the home at 520 Buffalo street with Rev. C. R. Bulley officiating. Interment will take place at Evergreen cemetery. The body is to be removed to the home tomorrow afternoon from the Pfeffer mortuary. Manitowoc Herald News, October 12, 1931 P. 1 ******* William Frazier, Pioneer Undertaker, Is Dead WEDNESDAY IS TIME SET FOR FUNERAL RITES Was 71 Years Old; Ill For Two Years; Was Well Known William Frazier, pioneer undertaker of the city, died at the Holy Family hospital shortly before 8 o'clock this morning, death being due to complications. The body will be removed to the home from the Pfeffer parlors tomorrow afternoon. Born in Germany Sept. 30, 1860, Mr. Frazier just passed his seventy first birthday. He came to this country as a body (sic) and came directly to Manitowoc. A little better than a half century ago he engaged with his brother, Charles Frazier, in the furniture and undertaking business. The firm was for many years located at the corner now occupied by the Weber Dandy company at Eighth and York streets. Larger Quarters Later they moved to larger quarters on York street. During their long businss asso- ciation of 40 years they trained many of the men now engaged in the undertaking business in this city. About 12 years ago the brothers separated and William Frazier engaged in business for himself, first on North Eighth street within a block from the site of his first shop and later at his home at 520 Buffalo street. About four years ago he retired because of ill health although he still occasionally assisted Leonard Pfeffer, who had also been his pupil. During his long residence in the second ward Mr. Frazier contested with Joseph Willott for supervisor and represented the ward on the county board for a number of terms. He never held any other public office, however, and the Maccabee lodge was his only fraternal connection. Two Children He was married in this city on August 3, 1889, 42 years ago, to Miss Louise Discher who with two children, Roland, assistant city treasurer, and Aita, teacher in the city schools, survive him. One survies him (sic). An only sster (sic) died brother, (sic) Charles, this city, also survive him. An only sister died at Sheboygan a number of years ago. Manitowoc Evening Times, Monday, October 12, 1931 P.1 ******* CHANGE MADE IN C. & W. FRAZIER FURNITURE FIRM Wm. Frazier Retires from Firm with which He Has Been Associated for 29 Years on Saturday--New Name Change in membership and management of the furniture firm of C. & W. Frazier is announced today with the retirement from the firm of William Frazier, who has been associated with his brother, Charles Frazier, in conduct of the business for 29 years. The firm will probably be known in the future as C. Frazier & Son. The retirement of William Frazier comes with the sale of his interests in the firm to Harold Frazier, son of Charles Frazier and recently returned here from an extended stay in the West. The deal for transfer was made Saturday and the change in management became effective today. William Frazier, who held a half interest in the company, was in charge of the undertaking department and will be succeeded by the new member in that department, he having had several years' experience in Chicago and the west as an undertaker. It is said that William Frazier may continue in the undertaking business in the city. With the advent of the new management extensive changes and improvements are to be made in the firms store on York street. The basement is undergoing changes that will transform it into a show room while plans have been completed for remodeling the first floor to provide a chapel for holding of services for burial where relatives may desire to have services held away from homes. The building occupied by the new firm is owned by Charles Frazier. The second floor is in use as a lodge room and hall.
