KIM MARIE GOEKE Kim Goeke, 13, Drowns in Lake Green Street Boat Ramp Tragedy Scene 2 Other Girls Rescued After Calling for Help A 13-year-old Manitowoc girl lost her life in a swimming accident early Monday evening at Red Arrow Park, at the end of the Green Street boat ramp. Kim Marie Goeke, daughter of Mrs. Donna Goeke, of 1112 Washington St., and Sgt. 1c Norbert Goeke, of Ft. Jackson, N.C., was pronounced dead at the scene about 8:35 p.m. Monday by Dr. Theodore A. Teitgen, Manitowoc County coroner. Two other girls, swimming with Miss Goeke, were rescued from Lake Michigan after they too walked into a drop-off area while wading in the water. Manitowoc City Police, investigating the death, said the body was found in about 15 to 17 feet of water. The two rescued girls were identified as Diane Rasmussen, 13, and Debbie Klabunde, 13. (snip) Heard Cries Kustka said Tuesday morning that he heard the cries of the two young girls and ran into the water with his clothes on. He tried to keep both of the girls afloat, but the water was too deep for him to try to keep afloat along with the girls. He asked either one if they could swim or float, and one said she could float and Kustka told her to keep afloat in the water. He said they both were thrashing around in the water and several times he went under with the twosome in the attempt to get them to safety. Kustka said he called to a young boy on the beach and asked him to bring the Rasmussen girl a life preserver. The lad swam out with the buoy and proceeded Cont. on p.12 to bring the girl to the beach. The other youngster was brought to the shore by Miss Donna Kann, 23, _____ a former teacher at Washington Junior High School, who was at Manitowoc visiting another former Washington teacher. Miss Kann, the unknown boy and Kustka brought the two girls to shore. Miss Jacquelynn Bayer of ____, the schoolteacher that Miss Kann was visiting, gave mouth to mouth resuscitation to one of the girls until the rescue squad arrived. More Help More help was called for when it was discovered that a third girl had disappeared in the water. County and city police along with the U.S. Coast Guard arrived and started to drag the vicinity. Jan Hobbs, diving with an air tank, found the body of the Goeke girl a short distance from where the two girls were rescued. Two city police officers raised the body and the youngster was placed in an ambulance until the coroner arrived. Goldenstedt was removed to his home at 618 Huron St. and while not dangerous, his condition is said to be serious. Goldenstedt, who is employed by contractor, Harry Lang, was at work on the roof and narrowly missed falling from the roof when he was overcome, fellow workmen becoming aware of his condition in time to prevent his fall. It is said Goldenstedt will recover. With the temperature at 94 in the shade at 10 o'clock and 96 at noon the day was the hottest of the year and many outside workmen were forced to leave their work. Steel workers employed at the Dry Docks Co yards, left their work early in the day and workmen at the lake front docks and other work also laid off. There was a little breeze but it carried a hot wind that added to suffering from the heat instead of relieving it. Hundreds of people flocked to the piers and lake front in search of relief from the terrific heat but it availed little as there was little change. Five children were born to them, Robert, James, George, Hannah and Grace. Grace died at the early age of sixteen and Hannah married Alexander Mitchell and remained in Cumnock. In the early part of 1849, George, then a lad of 19 and his brother, James started for America and came on to Wisconsin a year or two later. Their parents and a brother, Robert left Scotland and sailed for America but the father died and was buried at sea. Undismayed, however, the widow continued the journey with her son to join the others in Wisconsin. In the same year that he arrived, James purchased from the government, a tract of land consisting of one hundred sixty acres of forest land in Section 32 in the Town of Newton, Manitowoc County. Two years later he conveyed eighty acres of it to his brother, George and eight years later sold the other eighty to William Bach, a banker and county officer in the City of Manitowoc. James and George sailed the lakes during the summer and during the winter months cleared their farm lands. The former won his way to Captain and the latter his mate. They were in command of the Schooner "Game Cock", then one of the finest and fleetest vessels on the lakes. During a severe storm in 1853, James was knocked overboard by a boom and drowned. George brought the schooner into port but never sailed again. From then on he devoted his entire time to his farm, first building a log shack, where he installed his mother as housekeeper. She continued to make her home with him until his death in March, 1868. Robert, the eldest son, in the early days of the Civil War, was called to Green Bay to appear before the Draft Board. He caught a severe cold on that day, from the effect of which he died. On November 15, 1859 George married Margaret Stephenson, daughter of John Stephenson, one of the pioneer settlers of the neighboring Town of Liberty and herself one of the early teachers of the county. Together they labored to transform the wilderness into the pleasant form it now is. The fondness with which he clung to the memories of his seafaring days is shown by the fact that the walls of his log house, the Captain covered with illustrations from newspapers and magazines depicting vessels, steamers and particulars of sailing days. This log shack was retained for many years as a storehouse and a playhouse for their children of whom there were nine. They are Margaret, now the wife of Frank O'Neil of the town of Liberty, Samuel J., residing in California, Grace, residing in Port Washington, John, married and living in Manitowoc, Eliza, Robert, Hugh and Jessie, all living as hone happy family in the city of Manitowoc and George S., who resides upon the old home farm. On September 1, 1902, George Goldie's wife died and the same year he turned the farm over to his son, George S. and passed his declining years in the city with his other children. He died in 1909. In 1906, George S. married Iona Stewart, daughter of James Stewart of the Town of Liberty and they, together with their two girls, Dorothy and Edith reside on the old homestead. Description of the present farm is West ¼ Northwest ¼ section 32 and Northwest ¼ Southwest ¼ Section 32, Newton.
