EDWARD R. GASS RIVER CLAIMS FIRST VICTIM OF SEASON, BOY OF 14 YRS. TRAGEDY ENDS LIFE OF EDWARD GAS SATURDAY Companions Fail in Effort to Rescue Drowning Lad First river casualty of the year occurred late Saturday afternoon when Edward Russel, fourteen year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Gass, met death by drowning in the Manitowoc river at the site of the old Pierce dam near the Gustave Kummer farm about half way between Kellners Corner and Rapids. The drowning happened about 7:30 and the body was recovered two hours later. Young Gass together with a dozen or more Boy Scouts of Troop 3 had arranged for an overnight hike on Saturday and left the city in charge of Scoutmaster Caldwell. They selected a camping spot on the flats on the south side of the river near the old dam site, had finished their supper an engaged in a game of baseball. This was about 7 o’clock. Six of the Boys Slip Away The boys were in charge of Mr. Caldwell who supervised their activities and it was planned that all should go to the swimming hole nearby for their swim before making camp for the night. In accordance with scout training an hour was to elapse between meal time and the swim. In the interim the game of ball was begun but six of the scouts, Clayton and Charles Glasgow, Michael Gerrigan, Stebs McMullen, a Schwab boy, and Edward slipped away from the ball game without the scoutmaster knowing about it and started for the river where they soon divested themselves of their clothes and plunged into the water. At the place where the dam used to be the water is said to be very deep and the shore precipitous. Edward could only swim a stroke or two and when his companions plunged in, followed, but must have stepped in over his depth immediately for the boys heard his gasp for help and then saw him disappear. Accustomed as he is to scout training, Clayton, the oldest of the Glasgow boys who was nearest, seized the stricken boy as he rose for the first time but the drowning lad clutched him in such a way that he could not exert his best efforts and scrambled out on shore tired out. Arising a second time one or two of the other boys got a grip on the Gass boy but he slipped from their grasp and went down a second time never again to appear. Boys’ Shouts Bring Help Panic stricken, the boys then shouted for help, knowing that another camp of Scouts, Troop 9, was encamped about three quarters of a mile away. The rest of Troop 3 arrived on the scene and a number of boys including Charles McDermond and Leonard Miller, two of the other lads, dove for the body but it was dark and the exact location where Gass went down was lost in the excitement. Executive Chadwick and John Schmidtman who were with Troop 9 ran to the scene and lent their efforts and later a boat was secured from the Fischer farm nearby by Gustav Kummer and the scouts and a car dispatched to the city for the police grappling irons. As soon as the apparatus arrived, the work of securing the body was not difficult. It was soon brought to the surface. Word to the stricken family was sent in immediately by telephone from Four Corners and the police notified. It was fully an hour, however, before Mr. Gass could be located at Two Rivers where he had gone to spend the evening. The grief of the father was heart-rending as he assisted in the work of locating the body of his boy which later was brought to the city by the Urbanek & Wattawa undertaking van. Edward Gass was an unusually bright child for his years and had just finished the Eighth grade preparatory to entering high school. He was a member of Troop 3 of the scouts for several years but had never been given much to swimming as had the other scouts because of a slight muscular affliction which he had sustained after a severe sickness in his earlier childhood. Water Fifteen Feet Deep The point where the drowning occurred is said to be a hole fifteen feet deep and the shore breaks off suddenly into the deep water. It is possible that the Gass boy stepped in over his depth immediately and being unable to swim had little chance to save himself. His companions did everything possible to save him and but for the fact that he had taken a strangling grip on the Glasgow boy he might have been pulled to safety. As it was, the latter almost met the same fate. No blame is attached to the Scouts or Scoutmaster Caldwell by the bereaved family inasmuch as the boys who went swimming ahead of schedule were not in charge of their leader when the catastrophe occurred. Executive Chadwick feels particularly distressed because of the drowning being the first untoward incident of any kind that has ever befallen a scout since he has had charge of their activities in Manitowoc. He with Troop 9 and John Schmidtman who was also a member of the camping party with his son Jack, did everything possible to render what aid they could in taking charge of the demoralized boys of the two camps. Members of Troop 9 assisted Mr. Kummer and Fischer in portaging the boat to the scene. They also took charge of the body until the arrival of the undertaking van and accompanied Mr. Gass back to the city to console the mother. The sympathy of the entire city goes out to the bereaved parents. DON GATES Death of Baby Not Listed as Road Fatality The still born infant of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Gates of route 2, Two Rivers, who was a victim of Memorial drive crash June 24, has not been classed as a motor vehicle death, according to Dr. Theodore Teitgen, coroner. (snip) Decision by State According to Dr. Teitgen, the decision came from the motor vehicle department. He said he presumed that the Gates baby was the first case of its kind in Wisconsin as the department had to consult the National Safety council and the supreme court to reach its decision. The letter to Dr. Teitgen read: "The death of a live born baby resulting from pre-natal traffic accident injuries is classified as a motor vehicle accident death. However, if the baby was not injured in an accident and died because of circumstances of its birth, the death is not classified as a traffic fatality." AUGUST GAUGER Smith at Manitowoc Writes Own Obituary Manitowoc (Special)- August A Gaugher, 61, knew what he wanted from life- -and he knew what he wanted in death. As far as it is possible for any man he obtained both. August Gauger knew what to expect of the future, too. He saw to that. When he died at his home last night his family only to write the words "August 13th" in the obituary August Gauger wrote in his own hand two years ago. Here it is, just as Mr. Gauger wrote it and wanted it printed: "August A. Gauger, well known Washington street blacksmith and horseshoer, died after a lingering illness of heart trouble. He was born in this city December 8, 1875 at the old homestead on South 15th street, which he still occupied at the time of his death. He attended the old third ward school until he was 14 years of age, when he was called upon by his father to learn the blacksmith and shoeing trade which he worked for 66 years. His health failing, he was forced to quit the trade. The old Gauger blacksmith shop was erected in 1870. It was equipped with an old time ox frame to shoe oxen, which was used extensively in those days. After serving a number of years as apprentice Mr. Gauger's father entered into a partnership with him under the name of O. Gauger and Son. After his father became incompetent and retired he went into partnership with the following well-known blacksmiths-Charles Zinkel, Bern Kitserow and Phil Heidorf. Mr. Heidorf is still operating the shop and it is the last horseshoeing shop in the city today." "Mr. Gauger was married in 1899 to Amanda Baerwaldt of this city who survives with one daughter, Mrs. Otto Rapp, one grandchild, and two brothers, Edward of this city and John of Porterville, California. Mr. Gauger was an active member of the old Manitowoc Turn verein serving as Turning Teacher for (illegible) years until the Verien finally disbanded." "Although his education was limited, Mr. Gauger succeeded in passing the civil service examination and was appointed substitute mail carrier under Postmaster Harry Kress. At that time the mail was collected from the corner mail box with a horse and cart. He was a charter member of the old Manitowoc County Blacksmiths' association, also a charter member of the Master Horseshoers Protective association of America. Switala was taken to Humana Hospital Northside where he was listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit Tuesday evening, a nursing supervisor said. Ms. Gaugh's mother, Nancy DeFaut, and another daughter, Jody Holmes, found the couple at 1:30 a.m. after returning from a Pinellas Park bar. The two had left the couple to go to the bar between 9 and 9:30 p.m. "She was trying to break up the relationship," Ms. DeFaut said Tuesday. "When we left the house it looked like a peaceful conversation, otherwise we wouldn't have left." Ms. DeFaut's two grandchildren, Toby Gaugh and Travis Holmes, both 4 years old, were watching TV when Ms. DeFaut and Ms. Holmes left for the bar. When they discovered the body several hours later, the children were sleeping in front of the TV, they said. Investigators said the children slept through the violence. Sheriff's investigators said Ms. Gaugh had invited Switala to dinner at her mother's home so that she could return a diamond engagement ring to him, Bocchichio said. But Ms. Holmes gave this account of what happened: Ms. Holmes, who is vacationing here from Wisconsin, said she and her mother and the grandchildren went to eat dinner at a relative's mobile home in Seminole at 5:30 p.m. Monday evening. Ms. Gaugh, a barmaid at the Corner Tavern in Pinellas Park, worked until 7 p.m. and then returned to her mother's home on 82nd Way. Shortly after 7:30 p.m. Ms. Gaugh phoned her family, who was still at the relative's mobile home. "She told us that Stephen was (at the house). She talked to my mom. She just said, 'Steve's here, can you come home?' She just didn't want to be alone with him," Ms. Holmes said. Because of the phone call, Ms. DeFaut, Ms. Holmes and the grandchildren returned to Ms. DeFaut's home. About an hour later Ms. DeFaut and Ms. Holmes went to the Corner Tavern. Neither woman knew what happened next, Ms. Holmes said. "I don't really know the guy, so I can't judge him, but he seemed nice," Ms. Holmes said of her sister's boyfriend. But she added: "I heard he had a very short fuse." Ms. Holmes said when she and her mother returned at 1:30 a.m. they found Ms. Gaugh lying face up on the kitchen floor. Switala was also found face up lying between the kitchen and the living room still alive, Ms. Holmes said. Tampa Bay Times, St. Petersburg, Florida, Wednesday, April 23, 1986 pg. 16
