Gibson, One Of First 3 City Mail Carriers, Passes Away VETERAN OF CITY CARRIER ROUTES DIES Retired From Service in 1923; Born at Branch and Spent Entire Life in County Elton C. Gibson, 75, one of the trio of letter carriers in Uncle Sam's service who took out the first city routes in Manitowoc, in 1893, when city free delivery was established here and who retired on a pension in 1923, died last night at his home, 618 North Sixth street. He has been in failing health for the past three months, but was able to be up and about until a couple of days before his demise. Mr. Gibson, a resident of Manitowoc county since his birth and of this city since a lad of ten, was a mail carrier for over thirty years. He with Fred Rockhoff and Richard Rudolph were appointed the first city carriers here March 18, 1893, when the city carrier routes were established. He covered the entire north side of the city, the other two having their rounds on the south and west sides. Mr. Rockhoff is now retired from the government service, because of failing health while Mr. Rudolph, the third member of the pioneer letter carriers of Manitowoc, is still in the service. Funeral Services Friday Funeral services for Mr. Gibson will probably be held Friday afternoon from the St. Pauls. M.E. church, of which he has been a member for some fifty years and of which congregation he was trustee at the time of his death. Definite arrangements are awaiting the arrival here of his only brother, Eldridge K. Gibson, of Stillwell, Kansas, who is motoring here with his wife and son for the funeral. The deceased was born at Branch 75 years ago, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Gibson, pioneer county residents. The family removed to this city to reside when the deceased was a young man of ten years, his father engaging in the flour and feed business here. He completed his education in the schools of the city, took a business college course and was engaged in business with his father for a few years. He took the civil service examination for letter carrier in the early nineties and was appointed, and entered on his duties March 18, 1893. Resided with Cousin Mr. Gibson never married. For the past 22 years he has made his home with his cousin, Mrs. Alice Harrison, at the old Gibson homestead on North Sixth street, which was the family home for over three score years. Mr. Gibson was devoted to his church and never held public office except for serving for a number of years on the Second ward election board. As the postal service grew in Manitowoc Mr. Gibson's route was gradually reduced until his territory covered a section in the Second ward. He retired Jan. 25, 1923, having reached the age limit. Since then he has lived a retired life. One brother Eldridge K. Gibson of Stillwell, Kansas, and his cousin, Mrs. Harrison, are Mr. Gibson's sole survivors. Manitowoc Herald News, Manitowoc, Wis. GRACE (ALLEN) GILES Body of Elderly Woman Found on North Side The body of an elderly Manitowoc widow was found shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday on city property along the north side lake shore. Police Chief Elmer H. Scherer identified the woman as Mrs. Grace Giles, 71, of 624 N. Eighth St. Her body was found off an embankment at the dead-end of Park St., just beyond Fourth Street. Dr. Theodore Teitgen, county coroner, said Mrs. Giles had apparently been out for a walk and apparently stumbled and fell about 10 feet over the ledge. Her body was discovered by Joseph Vondrachek, who asked a nearby resident to phone police. When Vondrachek spotted the body it was in bushes beneath the ledge. Dead Several Hours Dr. Teitgen said there were scratch marks in the ground near the body which indicated that possibly Mrs. Giles suffered a heart attack while trying to get back up the embankment. The county coroner estimated that she had been dead several hours and that the accident occurred at noon or earlier Tuesday. There was no evidence of foul play, authorities said. Mrs. Kurt Daetz, a cousin of the victim, said she did not know if Mrs. Giles regularly walked to the lake area which is about four blocks from the apartment where she lived alone. 'May Have Been Confused' Mrs. Daetz said the woman "hasn't been well lately and may have been confused." She said she attempted to see Mrs. Giles at her Eighth Street apartment Tuesday afternoon but found no one home. Funeral services for Mrs. Giles will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Jens Funeral Home. The Rev. Robin Butler will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Mrs. Giles was born Dec. 4, 1894, in Spring Valley, Minn., daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Luhman and Fredricka Rusboldt Allen. She attended Manitowoc public schools and was graduated from the old Westside High School. Was Housemother She was married to George Stuart Giles in November, 1920. He was a traveling fire insurance inspector and preceded her in death in 1947. Following her husband's death, Mrs. Giles was a housemother at Beloit (Wis.) College and Claremont College in Pomona, Calif. She stopped working about five years ago. She was a member of the First Presby- terian Church, Manitowoc. She is survived by a brother, Fred Allen, of Los Angeles, Calif., nephews and cousins. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. The casket will be closed. WILLIE GILLETT Death by drowning in the Manitowoc River of the approximately 10-year son of butcher Gillet day before yesterday (Tues.). While swimming with older children, all chasing a wooden block in deep water, he went under. Der Nord Westen, 20 June 1878 ********** GILLETT.-Drowned in Manitowoc River, on the evening of June 18th, Willie Eugene, eldest son of Hugh T. and Nelley Gillett, aged 9 years, 10 months and 14 days. The funeral was held at his father's residence, at 2 p.m. Thursday, the 20th inst., and was very largely attended by the friends of the sorrowing family. The impressive office for the burial of the dead of the Episcopal Church was said by the Rev. M.V. Averill, Rector of the parish, and the choir sang with organ accompaniment the anthem "Lord, let me know my end and the number of my days." and the hymns "Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep," and "There's a land that is fairer than day." A very pleasant mark of affectionate regard was the attendance of the class in St. James' sunday(sic) school, of which Willie was a faithful member, and the scholars of room number 6 of the second ward school, who also marched in procession from the house to the cemetery. A floral crown and two crosses were brought by sympathizing friends, and at the conclusion of the services at the grave the children gently dropped small bouquets of fragant blossoms into the last resting place of their little departed companion. By request we append the names of the Sunday school class who were present: Eddie Averill, Eddie Filholm, Hugh Gillett, Otto Sonstagen, Charlie Treat, and Rosa Averill, also the pallbearers: Louis Hermansen, Charlie Treet, Hugh Brandies, Olof Olson, Peter Christiansen, and Christian Anderson.- "O, call litte Willie back to me!" Said Hugh to his Mother, one day; "The Summer has come with flower and bee- O where is my brother gone?" "The butterfly is glancing bright Across our garden path, I care not now to chase its flight- O call my brother back." "The flowers run wild-The flowers be sowed O mother, dear, lets plant them on his grave, And we will go there day by day And water them with our tears." "He could not hear my voice, fair child, Though I should call ever so loud; The face that once like springtime smiled On earth no more we will see." "Little Willie is safe in heaven, He knows no sorrow there; And we, fair child, can go to him When this life's race is run." Mother.
