He has been battling for many months with that dreaded disease, consumption (i.e., TB or tuberculosis—ed. B.M.L.), and at last slowly succumbed to its ravages. Deceased was born in Germany Sept. 6 1854 and came to this city eight years ago. For several years and until he was compelled to give up work he was employed at the brewery of The William Rahr Sons. He leaves a wife and six children to mourn his loss and his father and one brother also reside in the city. No funeral arrangements have yet been made. The sincere sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved relatives in their sore affliction. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Tuesday, September 5, 1899, No. 273 ******** August Glander of this city died on Tuesday last of consumption of the lungs. He had been an employe of Rahr's Sons, but quit six weeks ago stating he was satisfied he would never be able to return. He was 35 years old and leaves a wife and six children. Carmen Glander born ca 1914 in Manitowoc, Manitowoc County, WI; unknown to whom married or when died. ----------- Difficult family to trace. Since August Glander died so young, in the 1900 US Census, 3rd Ward, Manitowoc County, Clara is listed as age 37, widow, says mother of 5 children, but none of the children are living with her. They must have been living with other family members. In the 1910 US Census, Clara is listed in the 3rd Ward, Manitowoc, Manitowoc County, with Fred, Emil C., John, Hattie, William H. and Rose, along with brother John Radatz, widower, and Frederick Glander, age 80, father-in-law. In 1920, still 3-WD on S. 10th St., Clara is listed as Widow, born Pommerania, along with son Emil, age 32, William age 26, Hattie, age 28, and Rose, age 25. Hattie must have been born while on the ship, or on the way from Baltimore to Manitowoc, as she definitely was not born in Germany. Hattie Glander is the one who married John G. Strathearn (Strathearn family also buried in Cemetery #44 Evergreen). Although cemetery stones reflect that she was born in 1890, I believe it impossible, as she is not on the Ship manifest. I don't think she knew where or when she was born. In the 1930 US Census, 1210 S. 10th St., Clara Glander is listed as age 66, widow, along with son Emil Glander, age 42, with John G. Strathearn, son-in-law, listed as age 37; he is a mail carrier; along with Hattie, listed as age 39, and Joan Strathearn, grandchild, listed as age 1-8/12. John G. Strathearn married Hattie Glander ca 1924/1925. On this census, Hattie Glander Strathearn says that she emigrated 1893.

JOHN A. GLANDER John Glander, Studio Operator, Is Dead at 66 John A. Glander, 66, of 1117A South 16th St., founder and owner of the Glander Art Studio, and engaged in photography in Manitowoc for more than 50 years, died Sunday morning at the Holy Family Hospital. Mr. Glander was stricken with a heart attack at his home late last week and was moved to the hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First German Evang- elical Lutheran Church, of which he was a member. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. He was born in Woldenberg, Germany, in 1887, son of Mr. and Mrs. August Glander. In 1892 he came with his parents to the United States, locating in Manitowoc. When he was only 15 years of age his father died and he left high school to become a photographer’s apprentice with A. J. Packard, one of the Manitowoc’s early day photographers. Business Expanded Rapidly In 1908 Mr. Glander decided to enter business and purchased the William Dumke studios at 904 Washington St. Later he moved to the Spoentgen building in the same block. He was joined in his studio for a few years by his former employer and teacher, Mr. Packard, and also WIliam Dumke. Mr. Glander’s expanding business resulted in construction of the two story art studio at 822 Washington St., and in 1925 he acquired the Henry Bode property, adjoining the studio on the east. Mr. Glander attained a national reputation for portrait work and his pictures of the late Senator Robert M. LaFollette Sr., former Wisconsin governor, were used during the campaign when the latter was the progressive candidate for president of the United States. Took Carferry Pictures. He also pioneered in 35 millimeter movies, being one of the first in the state to take these pictures in both black and white and color for commercial use. These films were extensively used by the Aluminum Goods Company and National Tinsel Company. During the building of the City of Midland 41, flagship of the Marquette carferry fleet, in Manitowoc in 1940-41 Mr. Glander took colored progress pictures from the laying of the keel to the launching and later on the carferry’s trial runs before it was delivered to the owners. WILLIAM GLEASON Manitowoc Youth Drowning Victim Near Rapids Bridge Boy Apparently Panicky, Resists Rescue Efforts William Gleason, 14, Loses Life on Sunday Evening A 14-year-old boy drowned in the Manitowoc River near the old bridge in the newly annexed Manitowoc Rapids area Sunday evening after he apparently became panicky and resisted efforts by a companion to save him. The victim was William Joseph Gleason, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gleason, of 1525 S. 38th St., Manitowoc. He was one of five weekend victims in the state. The body was recovered after 6:30 p.m. in six feet of water about 100 feet northwest of the bridge. Resuscitation efforts by members of the City Fire and Police Departments proved futile. Grasped Several Times Gleason and a companion, Gary Stelzer, 13, of 1520 S. 38thSt., went to the river to fish. After fishing awhile, the Gleason boy decided to go bathing and took off his clothes. Officials said he could not swim and apparently walked into a 12 foot hole near the spot where his body was found. A few minutes later Gary saw William floundering in the water, removed his clothing and went to aid him. Gary told officials that he grasped William several times but could not bring him to shore as William kept pulling him into deeper water. Gary began shouting for help but was forced to let go before assistance arrived. The body was found by Donald Leikner, 21, of 3316 Mero St., and carried to shore with the help of Officer Leroy Strauss who removed his uniform and joined five other men in the water during the search. The men started near the old bridge and went upstream toward the dam (snip) Funeral services for the Gleason boy have been tentatively set for Wednesday at the Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc. GERALDINE MARIE GLOE BABE PLAYING WITH MATCHES BADLY BURNED Geraldine Gloe, four year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Randolph Gloe of Two Rivers, lies at the Holy Family hospital in a critical condition as result of burns suffered at 11 o’clock this morning when her clothes caught fire when she played with matches. The little girl is badly burned about the face, arms and body as far as the waist line and her hair are badly singed. The shock added to the seriousness of the little one’s injury. The burns, while not deep, are extremely painful and the little patient’s condition is serious. The accident occurred at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Fricke, Rural Route 2, north of the city, parents of Mrs. Gloe and with whom she has been making her home for a short time. Just exactly how the accident happened no one knows but the little girl is believed to have found some matches while at play in the woodshed near the house and to have had her dress ignited. The child ran into the house, her clothing a mass of flames. Mrs. Fricke, grandmother of the little girl, was home alone at the time but instantly came to the little one’s assistance, wrapping her in a blanket and snuffing out the blaze but not until the child had been severely burned about the face, neck, arms and body. Medical assistance was summoned and the girl rushed to the hospital where she is resting as easily as can be expected this afternoon. Mrs. Fricke suffered severe burns to her hands and arms as result of her efforts in extinguishing the flames and is confined to her bed as result of the shock. Her burns are painful but not dangerous. HARRIET FRANCES GLOVER DIED: In this village, on the 10th inst. Frances Harriet, wife of Wm. H. Glover, aged 52 years. The deceased was a lady of accomplishments, and possessing a genial nature she drew about her a large circle of friends. She has been ill for a long time, but she bore her sufferings with a christian fortitude until at last she found rest. Manitowoc Tribune Thursday, November 12, 1868 pg. 4 ******** DIED. In this village, on Tuesday, the 10th inst., Frances Harriet, wife of William H. Glover, aged 52 years. The announcement of the decease of the late Mrs. Glover will cast a shadow of profound grief over our entire community, where she was universally beloved and respected. Mrs. Frances Harriet Glover was born in Norwich, Conn., January 25, 1817, and was 52 years of age, nearly at the time of her decease. She removed to Kenosha in this State in the fall of 1854, residing there a few months. In 1856 she came to Manitowoc, where she lived until summoned away by death. Although afflicted for many years with a most painful and insatiable disease, she, throughout the entire period of her prolonged sufferings, displayed the most remarkable Christian fortitude. Such resignation to the will of God, such uncomplaining patience, such a lovely and genial disposition, is rarely, if ever, equaled. Her entire life was spent in promoting the welfare of others, according to her ability, and her loss in social circles, and at the church of which she was a devout and consistent member especially, will be felt. She was a most affectionate and devoted wife, and to him, the chief mourner, her widowed husband, the heartfelt sympathy of this entire community is proferred, in his great bereavement. B.
