S. OSCAR GUNDERSON Stephen Gunderson Is Dead; Pioneer In Dairy First Man To Put Milk In Bottles and Pasteurize Product Stephen Oscar Gunderson who back in 1912 pioneered in the supplying of milk in bottles, in contrast to the old method of using pouring cans and a short time later was the first to supply pasteurized milk in Manitowoc, died early this morning at the home on North Sixth street. Taken seriously ill a week ago, Mr. Gunderson suffered a stroke last night and died a few hours later without regaining consciousness. The deceased had been living a retired life for the last few years. Last June he celebrated his fortieth wedding anniversary. Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. from the Frazier mortuary and at 2 p.m. from the First Lutheran church, Eighth and State streets, in charge of Rev. D. G. Ristad. Interment will be at Evergreen. The deceased, who was 69 years of age, was born in the town of Manitowoc Rapids, May 30, 1863, and was brought up on a farm. He later moved to this city to engage in the milk business. He was married to Miss Anna Halverson, June 22, 1892 at Rapids, who survives him. Had Milk Route For years, Mr. Gunderson operated a milk route. He saw the sanitary advantages of delivering the milk to the homes of the city in bottle containers. He pioneered this plan which has come to be universally adopted. A short time later he took up the pasteurizing of milk being the first dealer in the city to adopt this sanitary safeguard. GUNDERSON BADLY BURNED AT ELKS CLUB Caretaker Suffers Bad Burns to Face, and Arms Early Today O. Gunderson, caretaker at the Elks club, suffered severe burns to the face, hands and neck this morning while engaged in burning a quantity of rubbish in the furnace in the basement of the club building. He was taken to his home, where he is under care of physicians and will be incapacitated for some time, although his burns are less severe than at first feared and he is not confined to his bed. Mr. Gunderson came through the accident most fortunately as, had his clothing ignited, he would probably have burned to death, there being no one at the club building at the time of the accident, which happened shortly after 7 this morning. Mr. Gunderson's two arms to the elbow were burned, one side of his face scarred and the neck affected. His hair was badly singed and his condition at first was thought to be serious. Examination showed the extent of the burns to have been limited to the arms, face and neck, and not to be deep, although the skin on the arms is a mass of blisters that cause intense suffering to the injured man. Draft Throws Fire Out Door A sudden draft, which caused the smouldering fire to shoot into a blaze while the furnace door was open was responsible for the injury to Mr. Gunderson. He had just thrown a quantity of paper upon the smouldering fire when the flame shot out of the furnace door, carrying several feet and striking Mr. Gunderson full in the face. With presence of mind and, despite the excruciating pain, he closed the furnace door and prevented the fire from betting(sic) a start in the wood work and saved the building. Had his clothes caught fire the result would have been serious, as there was no one in the building to hear his cries or to render assistance. Mr. Gunderson telephoned for a physician and was removed to his home after his injuries had been dressed. He is resting as comfortably as could be expected and it is not thought that the burns will leave any scare(sic). Just Returned to Work Mr. Gunderson had returned to his duties at the Elks only Monday after having been confined to his home by a siege of illness. He will be unable to return to the club for a time but the position will be held open for him. The accident is the first at the Elks club since the new building was opened. JOHN GUNDY DEATH BRINGS PEACE TO MIND LONG TROUBLED Death brought peace to a mind long troubled when John Gundy, a former Schleiswig man passed away at the Holy Family hospital yesterday at the age of 65 years. Mr. Gundy had been an inmate of the county asylum for years and had recently been removed to the hospital for treatment. A pathetic scene was enacted at the hospital yesterday when an only surviving brother, a prominent Schleiswig farmer, visited the institution and asked to view the remains for the last time. The old man broke down as he looked for the last time on the face of his only relative. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Tuesday, February 09, 1915, Page 8 ******* [cause: acute gastritis]

ELIAS GUNNELL (d. 1926) E.E. GUNNELL DIES SUDDENLY FORMER HEAD SHIPBUILDING CO. IS STRICKEN Dies at Home Today on Return from Business Trip in Chicago Elias E. Gunnell of the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Corporation and former president of the concern, died suddenly at his home on Michigan avenue at noon today, death being due to apoplexy and came almost without a warning. News of the death came as a great shock to the community in which Mr. Gunnell had been a resident for the past quarter century, identified with some of the largest industrial developments in the city. Funeral arrangements have not been made. Death is Sudden Mr. Gunnell was in apparent health up to a few minutes before he was stricken. He had returned from a business trip to Chicago last night and was about as usual this morning but at his home for lunch he complained of distress and suddenly bowed his head on the table and fell over, death being due to the sudden attack caused by a bursting blood vessel. Born In Ireland Mr. Gunnell was born in Ireland near Dublin sixty years ago and came to America with his parents when a boy of nine, the family locating at Rochester, N.Y. and five years later removing to Buffalo where Mr. Gunnell first engaged in the work which was afterwards his life career and in which he achieved great prominence. At the age of twenty-one he was assistant superintendent of a large ship building plant and later was associated with the Wheeler Ship Building Co. at Bay City, Mich., and the Chicago Ship Building Co. and eventually became superintendent of the Bath Ship Building Co. at Bath Maine. Came Here in 1901 In 1901 Mr. Gunnell associated with C.C. West and L.E. Geer..(line not readable).. Burger Bros. and the development of the industry under their direction has been rapid and large, until the yards are today among the most important on the Great Lakes. Mr. Gunnell developed a number of new ideas in the building of boats, one of the most important of which was the use of pneumatic tools which he introduced in Europe with remarkable success. Compressed air replaced human brawn in methods of construction of even naval boats and when the Manitowoc yards were called upon for their quota during the war Mr. Gunnell directed the building and equipment of a fleet totaling nearly fifty ships, contracted for with the company. The yards made the record of a new keel laid every four weeks. The steamers Nevada and the Alabama which were built under Mr. Gunnell’s supervision and planning are considered among the finest specimens of craft ever constructed. Both boats were constructed under a new plan worked out by Mr. Gunnell as the engineer of the company. Had Extensive Interest Mr. Gunnell retired from the presidency of the Ship Building company in 1920 when the company was reorganized under the name of the Manitowoc Ship Building Corporation. Mr. Gunnell became president and treasurer of the Maritime Securities Co. which handles the business of the old concern and other interests. He became identified with the reorganization and a heavy stockholder in the Goodrich Transit Co. which last year absorbed the Graham and Morton Co., one of the oldest lines on the lakes, and is first vice president of the combined companies. Mr. Gunnell was one of the most prominent figures in the ship building world and was widely known not only on the Great Lakes but in the ocean going building trade. He was the inventor of many new devices which have been put into use at the local yards and a man of great engineering ability and after his retirement as president of the company, retained a position as consulting engineer in which capacity he served up to the time of his death. Leaves Widow and Son Besides his widow, Mr. Gunnell is survived by one son, Elias, Jr., of this city and by six brothers, Edward, George, Joseph, Frank, Arnaud and Fred and one sister, Henriette. Deceased was a member of the Lakeside Country Club, and of the local lodge of Elks. Arrangements for the funeral of Mr. Gunnell have not been made late this afternoon. Always Active Man Mr. Gunnell had always been in apparent robust health and very active. He was a man of forceful character and assumed much personal direction of work which he super- intended, always insisting on knowing that things were being conducted as he mapped them. He was democratic and known to his associates as a hard worker. Gruff of exterior, he had a big heart and was a true friend when adversity made its calls upon his assistance. Both Mr. West and Mr. Geer, his associates in the company, are absent from the city. Manitowoc Herald News, February 25, 1926 P. 1 ******** FUNERAL OF MR. GUNNELL TO BE HELD MONDAY Funeral services for Elias Gunnell, whose sudden death yesterday came as a great shock to the community, will be held Monday afternoon from the home on Michigan avenue. The arrangements for the funeral were announced today and burial will be at Evergreen cemetery in this city. Relatives of Mr. Gunnell will arrive here tomorrow and Sunday for the funeral. FRANK GUYLES A telegram received here Tuesday reports that Frank Guyles died Monday in San Diego, California. Last fall he had given up his position as cashier for the Albert Landreth Co. here in order to seek possible relief for his illness in southern California. The body will be brought here for burial. The deceased, a son of the late sawmill owner Jacob F. Guyles, was born 56 years ago in Waukegan and came here as a child. He leaves a widow, who is a daughter of the late Charles Luling, and one daughter. Der Nord Westen, 28 Feb. 1907 ******* FRANK GUYLES DEAD IN WEST Former Resident of City Yields Life While Seeking Health in Change of Climate Frank Guyles, who left here three months ago in hope of regaining his health in a change of clime, died at San Diego, Cal., Monday night, dispatches to friends here conveyed the sad intelligence which, though not unexpected, is a painful shock to a wide circle. Plans have been completed to bring the body to this city for burial and it will leave San Diego tomorrow, reaching here later in the week and the funeral may be held Sunday or the first days of next week. Advices from San Diego of late, relative to the condition of Mr. Guyles, have not been encouraging and it was known Saturday that the struggle was proving an unequal one in which there was small chance that the patient would survive. Mr. Guyles has been confined to his bed during the past weeks and had failed rapidly. The disease fastened itself upon him two years ago and became serious a year ago when he was suddenly stricken while in Chicago. Returning here, Mr. Guyles was forced to abandon active pursuits for months but improved and the family hoped for the best. Another attack prompted removal to California and though at first there was some change for the better, it was not permanent. The life of Frank Guyles has been a particularly active one. He was born at Waukegan, Ill., and came to Manitowoc when a boy with his father, Captain John F. Guyles, who was associated in business soon after with George Pankratz, comprising the firm of Guyles and Pankratz. He was married here, his wife being a daughter of the late Charles Luling. for a time he was employed as a bank clerk in the T.C. Shove bank, later becoming an office empoye of the Truman & Cooper flour and feed company now. For a period of five years he was located at Norwood, Mich., where with his brother, George B. Guyles and G.V. Nash, he was in the lumber business but after this removed to Cleveland, Ohio and lived there until 1899. At this time he came back to this city and accepted a position for the Albert Landreth Company as cashier which position he held until a year ago when his health began to fail him and he was obliged to resign, the work entailing too much indoor work. While never active in politics and never closely identified with big enterprises of any sort, the decedent at all times manifested the profoundest interest in the welfare of the city. He held no public office but was a director of the local Building and Loan Association ever since its start. He was essentially a home-loving man and in his position with the Landreth Company was perhaps the most valued employe the concern ever had being in the closest touch with all of its affairs. Since coming to this city from Cleveland, Mr. Guyles had been a communicant of the Presbyterian Church and in this connection was more than a passive member. Mr. Guyles was 56 years of age and is survived by a widow and one daughter, Miss Calla Guyles. One sister, Mrs. L.J. Nash, this city and a brother, J.C. Guyles of Tacoma, Washington also survive. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Tues., Feb. 26, 1907 ******* FORMER MANITOWOC RESIDENT PASSES AWAY IN CALIFORNIA Frank Guyles, aged fifty-one years, died on Monday at his home in San Diego, California. The sad tidings were received by relatives here on Tuesday. Mr. Guyles resigned his position with the Albert Landreth company about three months ago on account of ill health, and, accompanied by his wife, he departed for San Diego, Cal., in the hope of regaining his health. But his condition grew worse until the end came on Monday. The decedent is survived by his wife and one daughter. The daughter, Miss Calla, is a teacher in the public schools of Kaukauna. The remains will be brought here for interment. GEORGE B. GUYLES Death of 31-year old George Guyles on 10 June in the home of Mr. L.J. Nash. Der Nord Westen, 17 June 1886 ******** DIED - At the residence of his brother-in-law, L. J. Nash, Esq., Thursday, June 10, 1886, Mr. George B. Guyles, aged about thirty-one years. Nearly all of Mr Guyles' life has been spent in this city, his absence from it having been comparatively brief. He completed his education, begun in our public schools, at Lawrence University. Returning here he took charge of his father's business, after the later's death. On October 3, 1878, he married Miss Genevra Barnes, who with one child survives him. He was a devoted member of the Methodist Church and was for some time superintendent of that Sunday School. A few years ago he removed to Norwood, Michigan, where he went into business, but ill health prevented his attention to that for many months previous to his death. He sought medical attendance in Chicago and spent considerable time in Naperville, Ill., at the hospitable home of Judge Cody, where he was attended by the best medical skill which could be summoned, but his case was hopeless and he returned to this city a few weeks ago, well knowing he was coming home to die. In his death, we have lost of the most promising young men who ever grew up here. He made friends of everyone who met him and he retained to the close of his life, every friend he ever made. In his business dealings he was scrupulously fair and as neighbor, citizen, friend and in the nearer relations of the home circle, he was respected, honored and beloved. Guyles, who died on Saturday afternoon. Manitowoc Pilot, March 30, 1876 P. 3 ********* DEATH OF CAPT. JNO F. GUYLES It becomes our unpleasant duty to record the passing away of one of our oldest and most esteemed citizens, Capt. J.F. Guyles -- no died at his residence last Saturday afternoon after a long illness. The Capt. was born at Ripley, Chattaugua County, New York, June 27, 1817, came west in 1836, sailed on the lakes until 1846, when he settled at Waukegan, Ill., where he remained until his removal to this county in 1856. He immediately identified himself with the business interests of the city and during his long and useful life was ever foremost in all measures which had a tendency to improve the moral and industrial interests of the community. He was one of the most earnest of our citizens in pushing the harbor and railroad projects and much of the growth and prosperity of our city is due to his energy and public spirit. As a friend of education, he took a leading part in bringing about the many and happy changes in our public schools which have been made within the past ten years and has always been a consistent Christian, belonging to the Methodist Church since its earliest establishment in this city. In his death, the community has sustained a loss, which it will be difficult to replace and he will always be remembered as a public benefactor. His funeral occurred on Tuesday. To the affected wife, children and relatives, we extend our sympathy which we know, all feel -- assuring them that they are not the only ones who mourn the taking away of one who, during life, did so much to endear himself to all who appreciated true worth as evinced by a life of purity and uprightness. The funeral sermon on the death of the late Capt. Guyles will be preached in the M.E. Church next Sabbath morning by the pastor, Rev. P.S. Bennett. Manitowoc Tribune, Thurs., Mar. 30, 1876 ********* IN MEMORIAM. By Rev. P.S. Bennett at the close of a sermon on Sabbath morning April 2, 1876, on the occasion of the death of the late Capt. Guyles. If it were my custom to eulogize the dead on such occasions as this, it would be difficult to find in our community a better subject than the one before us. Instead of this, I have—according to my usual habit—preached a plain Gospel Sermon. But in view of the distinguished position and marked character of our departed friend, it is eminently proper to add a few words of deserved tribute. Capt. Guyles was born in Chitauque Co. N.Y., on the 27th day of June 1817, and died March 25, 1876, being at the time nearly 59 years of age. He came to Chicago, Ill., in 1836, and soon after settled in Lake Co., of the same state. In 1810 he was converted to God, and joined the M.E. Church of which he remained an active and useful member till he exchanged mortality for life. In 1842 he was united in marriage with her who with five children now mourns his absence from their otherwise happy circle. In 1855 6 (sic) he was sheriff of Lake Co., Ill., and previous to the expiration of his term of office removed to Manitowoc, then a rude frontier town. For about twenty years therefore he was a resident of this place; nor was he an an unimportant factor in solving the problem of the city’s growth and prosperity. Every important enterprise connected with Manitowoc received his prompt endorsement and active cooperation. In these imperishable monuments to his memory, we read in part, his biography. It has been said, “Some men are born to rule”. This idea found an exemplification in Capt. Guyles. Quick to decern (sic), ready to execute, and fearless in whatever he deemed right, he was well prepared for a leader. His ready comprehension of whatever he understood at all, fitted him for the position to which his fellow-citizens by a sort of common consent accorded him. My acquaintance with him commenced about twelve years ago while performing the duty of Provost Marshal during the War of Rebellion. All remember his intense loyalty. He could have no patience with those who manifested the least sympathy with the red band of treason raised against the nation’s life. He entertained no more respect for traitors in the rear than for those in front. And it was no marvel, if some equally patriotic, but of a different temperament deemed him a little overheated. But such was his unselfish devotion to his country and his fealty to principle, that all men in their hearts respected him even though they dropped occasionally a hard word in the heat of contest. My relations to him were mostly of a religious character; and in these an acquaintance which began with a favorable impression, matured into high personal esteem. It has seldom been my lot to find a more symmetrical Christian character. His religion was not on one hand mere theory and form; nor on the other, mere faith and emotion; but embracing all these in their proper relations, it emphasized the experience of conscious fellowship with God attended and attested by corresponding good works, and a buoyant hope of a blissful mortality. With such a religious basis, it is not strange that he was always at his post of duty in the army of Immanuel. His loyalty to God was not less than that he bore to his country. In short he practically recognized the duty of rendering to God the things that are God’s, as well as to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s. The very last act of his life before he was stricken down was in this direction. He was at his place in the church on Sabbath morning though not in good health. In the evening he started for the sanctuary but was so indisposed that he was obliged to return to his house. Though he enjoyed few lucid moments from that hour, yet so thoroughly was his soul imbued with his religious faith that he would often say to his devoted companion as she was about to leave his bedside for a short rest, “Good bye” or “Good night wife. If we don’t meet again remember all is right.” What a glorious fact:--“All is right.” For nearly forty years he had been getting ready to say this; and now even amid the irregular oscillations of reason this experience gleams out. Had he been in perfect possession of his powers, his triumph would have been more complete. Though this would have been very agreeable, it is not really essential.—If we know how a man lived, we need not inquire particularly how he died. How important then to prepare in life and health, as he did, for sickness and death—But I need not prolong these remarks.—Whatever I have to say to the smitten family I can say elsewhere better than here. Whatever I have to say to the church of which he was so valuable a member, I can say more effectively at another time. But I have a few more words to the public at large. During the sickness and since the death of our friend, I have heard but one expression--that of great respect and high personal regard. The community is in mourning. You say, “We don’t know how to spare Capt. Guyles.” I cannot tell how often I have heard this remark. No, we do not know how to spare him, but our Father does. With hm no man is a necessity. He can remove valuable workmen, and yet carry on his work. We must adjust ourselves to the circumstances. You all feel that a good man has led—a good man in more respects than one,--a good citizen, a good business man, a good man to help develop the resources and promote the interests of your rising town, a good man morally, a good man religiously. I hazard nothing in saying that every man here, whatever be his practice, believes in his heart, that just such men as Capt. Guyles are needed to give moral tone to any community. You believe, moreover that if there had been a score or two of such men in your city that it would not have been, as now, seething in intemperance, in gambling, in Sabbath desecration and kindred vice. Further, if you were to lie down this night on your bed of death as he did seven weeks ago would you not rather have the reflection that your life-long influence had been exerted against the vices that corrupt and ruin men, than the consciousness of having pandered to their prejudices and passions for the sake of patronage? Again I ask:--whatever be your religious views, would you not under such circumstances rather have his hopes and projects than anything that irreligion or infidelity can furnish? Answer honestly at the bar of conscious. The papers will not announce that a millionaire is dead, and mathematicians will not puzzle their brains to estimate the magnitude of his bequests, but you know that he has left a legacy to the community, to the church of God, to his family more precious than gold. Heaven help us to take the legacy and use it aright. Manitowoc Pilot, April 6, 1876 P.3 ******* [bur. 03-29-1876]
