ANDREW HENRICKSON [HENDRICKSON] ANOTHER OF THE OLD PIONEERS OF CITY PASSES Death of Andrew T. (sic) Hendrickson Occurs At Home of Daughter, Mrs. Lowe in Delavan. Word was received here yesterday of the death of a former Manitowoc pioneer, Andrew T. Hendrickson, at Delavan, where he has been making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Harvey Lowe. The deceased who will be remembered as one of the pioneer sailing men of the early Manitowoc shipping days, had attained the ripe old age of 87 years. Up to this last year, Mr. Hendrickson had been in full control of all his faculties and the gradual breakdown occurred only within the last few months. Andrew T. Hendrickson was born in Skein, Norway in 1843 and set sail for America in early life locating at Quebec, coming to Manitowoc in 1871 and was married the same year to Lena Oberg. The latter died in 1904. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Joseph Gelin, Chicago; Mrs. E. C. Hall, Wauwautosa; Mrs. A. H. Lowe, Delevan; Mrs. Wilmer Shallcross, Milwaukee. One son, Axel died here in 1912. Funeral on Friday Arrangements were made today to have the remains brought here from Delevan for interment at Evergreen cemetery. The funeral party will arrive tonight on the limited train from Milwaukee and the remains will repose in the undertaking chapel of Wattawa & Urbanek until tomorrow and the funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday. LENA O. HENDRICKSON Mrs. Andrew Hendrickson, who lives on the north side of our city, wanted to oil the floor of one of her rooms and made a mixture of turpentine and linseed oil. In order to fix the mixture she put it on the stove and the stuff caught fire and quickly went up in flames. Mrs. Henrickson tried to put it out and in the process her clothing caught on fire. There was no one nearby to help the poor woman who was trying to put out the fire as best she could. Eventually, a neighbor child heard the terrible cries and sought help, but the poor woman was so terribly burned that the doctor had no hope of her recovery. Yesterday evening death relieved the woman of further pain. Der Nord Westen, 21 July 1904 *********** MRS. LENA HENDRICKSON DEAD Succumbs to Terrible Injuries Received July 18th. Last Wednesday evening shortly after 8 o'clock, Mrs. Lena Hendrickson, who was frightfully burned July 18th while heating a mixture of linseed oil and turpentine on a stove at her home on North Sixth street, passed away. She had hovered between live and death all day Wednesday. The many friends of the departed, who had hoped that the burns would not prove so serious as first reported by the papers, received the news of her passing with deep sorrow. With the exception of her daughter Dora, who was on her wedding trip in Nebraska and whom repeated telegrams had failed to reach, her children were with her at the bedside when the end came. Deceased was born in Norway in the year 1849 and was 55 years of age at the time of her demise. She emigrated to America at the age of seventeen years, locating first at Green Bay and then removing to this city where she resided continuously until the time of her death. She is survived by five children to mourn her untimely departure. These are: Harriet, Axel, Meta, Mrs. Neil Hall of Milwaukee and Dora who is now Mrs. Harve Lowe. The funeral took place for the house Friday at 2 p.m., interment being at Evergreen. Rev. Thorsen conducted the services. Manitowoc Pilot Thursday, July 28, 1904 pg. 1

CLOTHING AFIRE – BURNS SERIOUS
North Side Woman Meets with Terrible Accident in Attempt to Subdue Flames
BODY IS BADLY SEARED
Mrs. Lena Hendrickson Tries to Extinguish Small Blaze in a Pan of Oil and Result May Be Fatal – Details of Accident Tuesday
While alone in the house and engaged in the work of heating a preparation of linseed oil and turpentine to be used in oiling a floor, Mrs. Lena Hendrickson residing on North Sixth St., met with an accident on Tuesday, the results of which it is feared, will be most serious. The pan of oil caught fire – illegible --- the stove heating and in an attempt to put it out, the necessary – illegible --- to protect herself was momentarily forgotten and instantaneously her clothing ignited and the flames soon enveloped her entirely. Before she was able to extinguish the blaze almost all the wearing aparrell was burned off and the flesh terribly seared. No one heard the woman's cries for help but one of the neighbor's children and he rushed to her assistance immediately doing what he could to alleviate her terrible agony. The accident came at a most unfortunate time, two of the daughters who stay at home being away; Harriet in Milwaukee on a visit to her sister and Meta, her youngest, off on an errand downtown. Had either of the two been with Mrs. Hendrickson at the time of the mishap, assistance could have been rendered that would have made the accident a minor one. Neighbors hastily summoned, did what little they could to make the unfortunate woman comfortable until the arrival of a physician. While the burns inflicted are not necessarily fatal, grave fears are entertained that the shock and the excrutiating pains will be more than the system can withstand, although she has borne up bravely thus far. What makes the case a difficult one for the physcians is the fact that though the flesh is not burned deeply in but few places, there is much surface affected. The injured woman is resting as easy as can be expected and everything is being done to stay the suffering.
A pathetic feature in connection is the fact that Miss Dora, one of the family, left the home only this week and journeyed to Omaha, Nebraska where she was to meet her intended husband, Harve Lowe and is probably now on her honeymoon. Although several telegrams have been sent both to Mr. Lowe and to the daughter, none of them have been responded to and the family is at a loss to know where to reach them. It may be possible that if the marriage has already taken place the pair are on their way to the coast where they had intended to join a colleague of the prospective groom, who with the latter are special agents of the New York Mutual Reserve Life Insurance company and are now engaged in working that territory. A dispatch was awaited here on Tuesday from Miss Hendrickson who had made arrangements before she left to inform the family by wire of the wedding as soon as it was solemnized, but no work has yet been heard from her. The marriage was arranged to take place in the West for the reason that Mr. Lowe has permanent connections in that section of the country and it was deemed advisable that the event should be celebrated there to obviate the necessity for a trip to Wisconsin and return.
With Mrs. Hendrickson are her daughters, Mrs. Ned Hall and Harriet who arrived in the city on the “Limited” last evening. Mr. Hall arrived this morning and Axel, a son, is also expected today. A nurse has also been engaged to care for the unfortunate lady during the crucial period. The burns did not reach the face, one ear only being slightly affected, the body being the most injured. Many friends of the family deeply sympathize with the members of their affliction and voice the wish that the mother may be spared.

SAD NEWS ENDS HONEYMOON
Tragedy of Mother's Death Will Turn Bride's Happiness to Sorrow
All unconscious of the sad tragedy which encompassed her home here in the dark gloom of sorrow, Miss Dora Hendrickson, a bride of two days will today receive the sad intelligence of her mother's death with its accompanying suddenness, being on her honeymoon in Nebraska and not having been communicated with in time to reach here after the accident. Indeed, it is doubtful she will be able to arrive in time for the funeral which is to take place on Friday.
Miss Hendrickson was married at Omaha to Harve Lowe on Tuesday and in a letter sent here she told of a comtemplated trip to Lincoln, the same state. It is expected that the news of her affliction will be conveyed to the couple at that city today, messages having been sent to Omaha and forwarded to Lincoln. Seldom, if ever, has a Manitowoc bride's honeymoon been intercepted with such tidings as will greet Mrs. Lowe and heart-rending indeed will be the change from the bridal robes to the habilment of mourning. Bidding her mother a fond good-bye her heart filled with sorrow at the parting yet glad because of the advent into the new life about to come, the daughter little expected the sad calamity which was soon to be her lot and but few fellow beings are asked to drink a cup of sorrow so bitter.

WILLIAM HENDRIES (d. 1908) From Der Nord Westen, 14 May 1908: The 19-month old little son of South 9th Street resident here, William Hendries, died Thursday last week of convulsions.

WILLIAM HENDRIES (d. 1932) William Hendries, Despondent Carpenter, Dead ENDS HIS LIFE IN BEDROOM OF HIS HOME HERE Funeral Services Will Be Held On Monday, Burial At Evergreen William Hendries, 60, of 827 North Tenth street, despondent because he was unable to find employment and said to be suffering a nervous breakdown, entered the bed chamber at the home shortly before eight o’clock last night and fired a bullet from a .32 calibre automatic revolver through his heart. He died enroute to the hospital in the police ambulance. Mr. Hendries, who had been out of work for several months, gave no intimation to his wife, or to Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Jacobs, the latter a sister of Mrs. Hendries, that he intended to end his life. He had been away from the home most of the day. The revolver which he used, a new one, had been in his possession for some time. Shot Was Heard Entering the home last evening, he spoke only a few words and went up stairs to his bedroom. A few minutes later a shot was heard and when Mrs. Hendries arrived she found him mortally wounded. A call for the ambulance brought Offices Herman and Novak to the scene. Mr. Hendries was carried to the ambulance, but breathed his last just before it reached the hospital. There will be no inquest. The deceased was a native of this county, having been born at the Tannery, north of Two Rivers. After growing to manhood he learned the carpenter trade and was employed for a number of years at the shipyards. Later he entered the employ of the American Seating Co. here and when the plant on the west side was closed and moved to Grand Rapids, Mich., Mr. Hendries was one of the workmen who went from here to that place to continue work with that company. Back a Year A little over a year ago, when reduced operations at Grand Rapids forced a cutting down of the force there, Mr. Hendries, with his wife, returned to Manitowoc. A son, Walter, remained there. Since that time Mr. Hendries had been endeavoring to obtain employment but with the conditions as they are at present he was not successful. He developed nervous spells, although he gave no hint to his wife and daughter here that he intended to end his life. He is survived by his widow who was Miss Caroline Stahl, and to whom he was married in this city 27 years ago, one daughter, Mrs. John Peters, city, a son Walter of Grand Rapids, Mich., and three brothers, John and Charles of Bessemer, Mich., and Christ of this city. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at two o’clock from the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home, in charge of the Rev. Otto Menke, with interment in Evergreen cemetery. The remains may be viewed on Sunday from two to four in the afternoon and from seven to nine in the evening.
