CAPT. FRED HERRMANN TUG CAPTAIN OF CITY SUCCUMBS; WIDELY KNOWN Capt. Fred Herrmann Claimed by Grim Reaper After Battle of Four Years Capt. Fred Herrmann, widely known lake navigator of this city, passed away early this morning at the home of his brother, William, on South Tenth street, at the age of 62. Capt. Herrmann had been in ill health for more than four years, during that time fighting a losing battle against consumption. Last Tuesday he was forced to his bed and he failed rapidly, passing easily away this morning. Capt. Herrmann was born in Rochester, N.Y., March 15, 1865, and lived there until 10 years of age when, with his mother and brothers and sisters, he removed to this city where he had since made his home. His father passed away while in Rochester and it was necessary, upon arrival in this city, for the boys of the family to assist in the upkeep. Captained Various Crafts Capt. Herrmann took to navigation, sailing at the age of 16, on boats which made Manitowoc a port of call. He adapted himself easily to the following of the lakes and won praise from those who sailed with him. At an early age he was given command of the tug Cyclone, on which craft he had first taken passage as fireman. Later he went to Ashland where he captained the tug Pacific, after which he returned to Manitowoc to take over the tug Arctic, which boat still runs in the employ of the Goodrich Transit Co., and 12 years ago he retired to live his declining years in ease and retirement. Less than four years ago he was stricken by tuberculosis and spent nearly two years at Whitelaw in an endeavor to regain his lost health. That he did to a certain extent, but upon removal to the city his condition took a turn for the worse and for a year and a half he has suffered, death bringing relief today. Was Never Married Capt. Herrmann was never married and leaves only two brothers, John of Denver, Colo., and William of this city, and a sister, Mrs. Frank Musiel of this city. A nephew, John H. Musel, also survives. His mother and a sister passed away nine years ago. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2, from the Pfeffer chapel, and burial will take place at Evergreen. For the convenience of many friends who may want to view the remains, the body will lie in state at the Pfeffer chapel from 2 until 4 tomorrow afternoon and from 7 to 9 tomorrow evening. JOHN HERRMANN (d. 1899) BADE HER GOOD-BYE Then John Herrmann Left His Wife, Never to Return in Life. IN THE EMBRACE OF DEATH. He Was Returned to Her a Few Minutes Later-Had Committed Suicide in His Own Barn-Mind Was Unbalanced. John Herrman (sic), a well known contractor of the city, residing on Madison street, committed suicide by hanging at an early hour this morning. He arose as usual and after remaining about the house some time, bade his wife good bye, as was his custom, saying he would go to the barn, feed the horses and then go down town. This was the last time he was seen alive. A few minutes later he was brought to the house, cold in death. It was 6 o'clock when he left the house and at twenty minutes after 6, Chas. Zimmer, who was employed by the contracter, went to the barn to harness his team for the day's work. As he entered the building a ghastly sight met his eyes. Hanging from a beam was the body of his employer. He called for help and neighbors rushed to his assistance, the body was cut down, medical aid was summoned, but it was too late. His purpose had been accomplished and the spirit had taken its flight. The body was removed to the house and a corner's jury was summoned to meet at 10 o'clock. Friends of the dead man can assign no cause for the rash act. Early in June of last year he suffered an attack of grip and since that time his health has not been the best. He never recovered from the effects of the disease and was continually complaining of severe pains in the head. He would walk the floor for hours and frequently remarked that unless he could obtain relief soon, he must do something else. Business in his line has not been the best and he worried considerably over his inability to secure the work he desired. It is thought that his trouble unbalanced his mind and that he committed suicide while in a fit of temporary insanity. His wife is prostrated by the shock. John Herrmann was born in this city May 18, 1859 and was at the time of his death, 40 years of age. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Hermann and was one of a family of eleven children. He was married March 18, 1881, to Miss Bertha Winke, the ceremony being perfomed in this city. For a number of years he has been prominent as a contracter and road grader and his services were in demand. His family relations have been the most happy. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Herrmann, all of whom are living, the youngest being only nine months old. He was a loving father, a kind husband and a good neighbor. Honest and upright, he numbered his friends by the score and his death will bring a pang of sorrow to many a heart. The funeral will probably be held Monday afternoon at the late home. The Coroner's inquest was held at the office of Justice Falge at 10 o'clock. The jury consisted of Wm. Barkholm, Henry Schweitzer, Jr., Jos. Trestek, Ed. Hermann, Gustave Uek, Jos. Pfeffer, returned a verdict in accordance with the evidence presented, as follows: "We, the jury, summoned to act in the matter of the death of John Herrmann, find that said John Herrmann came to his death through hanging himself in his barn by a rope." Manitowoc Daily Herald, April 1, 1899 ******* The funeral services over the remains of the late John Herrmann were held from the home on Madison street yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Henry Falge conducted the services and the attendance was large. Numerous floral tributes testified the esteem of friends and the interment was at Evergereen. The pall bearers were: J. Trestek, C. Freidl, C. Heingarten, W. Menge, G. Streich and P. Riderera. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Manitowoc, Wis. ROBERT C. HERRMANN AND FLORENCE M. HERRMANN Manitowoc Couple Died in NC Crash at O’Hare Herrmanns Among 26 Fatalities A rural Manitowoc couple was among the 26 persons killed Friday evening when a North Central Airlines twin-engine plane slammed into a hangar while landing at Chicago O’Hare Field. Among the victims identified were Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Herrmann of Rt. 4, Manitowoc, who were en route to Syracuse, N.Y., where they were to serve as sponsors Sunday at the baptism of a child of John Hermann, the victim’s brother. A last minute change in plans caused the Manitowoc couple to be aboard the plane. They had intended to serve as proxy sponsors but were encouraged to attend the baptism which was to couple as an occasion for a holiday reunion, according to friends of the family. Stop Not Expected The Herrmanns boarded the plan at Green Bay because, according to North Central authorities at Manitowoc, “all of our scheduled passengers were urged to do so in view of the stormy weather during the day Friday. The plane was not expected to make its usual stop at Manitowoc, however, it did and then departed shortly after 6 p.m. ” Conflicting reports said that other Manitowoc passengers were aboard the plane but a check with the North Central home office at Minneapolis confirmed that the Herrmanns were the only area passengers aboard at the time of the crash. Both of the victims were 30 years old. Herrmann, a Manitowoc County traffic officer the past seven years, had been a jailer prior to accepting the traffic appointment. He was born June 14, 1938, at Manitowoc, son of Charles M. and Alice Feit Herrmann. He was educated at Holy Innocents Parochial School and was a graduate from Lincoln High School in 1956. BRIAN HERZOG (d. 2011) If you are reading this, my life's journey is complete. And what a journey it has been. My name is Brian M. Herzog. I lived in Hazelhurst, Wis., and died early on Wednesday morning, Feb. 2, 2011, at the age of 49. I was born on Aug. 4, 1961, in Manitowoc, son of Dawn McNamara Herzog and the late Clyde Herzog. After graduating from Lincoln High School in 1979, I had the wonderful experience of working on the crew that built the first eighteen holes of Blackwolf Run golf course in Kohler. It satisfied my love of operating heavy equipment. For the next 24 years, I was self-employed as an automobile wholesaler in Libertyville, Ill. I enjoyed the fast pace and exciting challenge of buying and selling cars and the friendships I made with the dealerships in Libertyville. This was the perfect occupation for me. On Oct. 19, 1991, I married Laurie Schwartz, the love of my life and tireless supporter. From 1992 until 2006, we lived a wonderful life in Grayslake, Ill. Our three children were born there. In 2006, Laurie and I purchased Home Xpressions, a furniture store in Minocqua. I had always wanted to live on a lake in northern Wisconsin, so this move and our new business was a dream come true. But the best of plans can go awry. In August 2007, I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, a life-altering disease. Eventually, I had to make peace with the fact that cancer would take my life. I had been diligently working the best plan I could to fight it; if I died, at least I would feel I fought the good fight and gave it my all. I have been blessed with outstanding support of family and friends. Without their care, the quality of my life and that of my family could not have been sustained. Many, many thanks. – Brian Brian is survived by his wife: Laurie Herzog; his children: Lindsey, Kate and Erik; his mother: Dawn Herzog; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Kim (Brian) Brown, Kerry (Todd) Weishoff; three brothers and two sisters-in-law: Jeffrey Herzog, Kirk (Debbie) Herzog, Tim (Lisa) Herzog; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Richard and Diane Rohrer; two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law: Rivian (Jim) Hatt, Robin (Kory) Brockman. Many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends also survive. Brian was preceded in death by his father: Clyde Herzog: his father-in-law: Irwin Schwartz. A celebration of Brian's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 8950 County Road J, Woodruff, Wis. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Jim Hoffman. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. and again on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11 a.m. Memorial donations would be appreciated in Brian's name to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (Research), 1500 Rosecrans Ave., Suite 200, Manhattan Beach CA 90266, or Holy Family Catholic Church Building Fund or Dr. Kate Hospice, Woodruff WI 54568. Brian Herzog will be remembered as a man of strong will and determination who loved his fellow man and was devoted to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed. Mrs. Herzog who drove here from the west last summer with her husband and daughter on a visit, passed away suddenly at the home in Reno Tuesday, according to messages received by relatives here yesterday. Funeral on Tuesday The body will arrive here Monday afternoon and will be taken to the home of Walter Wernecke, 914 So. Twelfth street where friends may view the remains. Burial will take place Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock, with interment at Evergreen cemetery here. JOHN HERZOG (d. 1935) JOHN HERZOG DIES AT HIS HOME; AGE 64 Famous Leader of Baseball In This Section For Years Has Heart Attack John F. Herzog, 64, who led Manitowoc baseball teams to pennants in the early years of the old Lake Shore league and who was actively identified with the national pastime for more than a quarter of a century, died suddenly of a heart attack early today. Mr. Herzog was ill for several weeks and recently returned from a short stay at the hospital to his home at 612 S. Clair street. Friday he told Mrs. Herzog that he felt much improved. Early this morning he arose and spoke to his wife and shortly after was stricken with a heart attack from which he failed to rally. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. from Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home with interment at Evergreen cemetery. In the years that Mr. Herzog was interested in baseball he brought many star players to Manitowoc and developed some for the "big show." Included among those who owed their development and future big league careers to the Manitowoc man were the late Addie Joss, famous for years as a pitcher of the Cleveland club of the American league, and Joe Hauser, star first sacker of the Philadelphia Athletics and still with the Minneapolis club of the American association. Cliff Bulin, later with the Boston Red Sox, was developed by the Manitowoc manager. Helped Form League Mr. Herzog first took charge of Manitowoc ball clubs in 1896 and assisted materially in the formation of the Lake Shore league, made up of teams along the west shore of Lake Michigan. At one time he headed the circuit as president. Several pennants that came to this city were directly traceable to Mr. Herzog's ability as a manager. In the tag end of one season more than 25 years ago Mr. Herzog brought Pitcher Cliff Curtis and other stars of the Milwaukee Brewers to Manitowoc to finish the season here and land the Ships at the top of the percentage column. It was in 1911 and 1912 that Mr. Herzog developed what was regarded as Manitowoc's best semi-pro team. Hurling for the Ships in those years was Cy Young, famous Fredonia pitching ace. Playing first base for Manitowoc on the same team was B. Peter Herzog, son of the manager. The pennant race developed into a crucial deciding game at Sheboygan on the last playing date of the season. Manager Herzog took his team to Sheboygan that rainy Sunday afternoon and Cy Young pitched Manitowoc to a victory and the pennant. John F. Herzog, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Herzog, was born at Shoto in 1871. The family moved to Manitowoc when he was a young man. The elder Herzog conducted a livery and sales stable here and the deceased assisted his father in this business. Later in life he engaged in the piano business and operated retail stores for Milwuakee companies in the city. At one time Mr. Herzog operated the Savoy tavern and palm garden. In recent years he took over the Yellow Taxicab company here and at the time of his death was district sales manager of the American Oil and Paint company. Mr. Herzog was married in this city to Miss Helen A Weber in 1892. Survivors are his widow; one son B. Petr Herzog, Milwaukee; and two brothers, Charles F. Herzog of this city and Daniel W. Herzog, Milwaukee. The body many be viewed at the funeral home from Sunday noon until the hour of the funeral. Manitowoc Herald Times, Manitowoc, Wis. REINHART E. HERZOG Fire Chief (retired) Reinhart E. Herzog, 77, 3302 Edgewood Ln., Manitowoc, passed away peacefully on to a better life on Monday afternoon, May 19, 2003, at Aurora Medical Center, Two Rivers, Wis. Reine was born on April 27, 1926, son of the late Reine G. and Ella Mulloy Herzog. He was educated at St. Boniface Catholic School where he experienced the guidance of the Sisters he so cherished as an adult. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1944 and immediately enlisted in the United States Navy to defend his country in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he returned to Manitowoc and began a lifelong passion for the service to his community, donning the uniform of a Manitowoc firefighter on Jan. 1, 1950. Long before emergency medical service matured in the late 1970 s he was an advocate of skilled care on the scene. Always on the forefront he was one of the first CPR instructors, one of the first EMTs and a long-time first aid instructor. As a firefighter, he was constantly seeking ways to make the job safer for those he worked beside. A s trong proponent of education, he eventually rose to the position of Fire Chief, serving in that capacity from 1974 until his retirement in 1990. In order to assure that his children and eventually his grandchildren would have the college education he valued so greatly, he worked tirelessly at additional jobs. He was the Greyhound agent for many years and owned and operated Manitowoc Ambulance Service with his wife and family for 19 years. He was a long-time member of the Manitowoc Noon Optimist Club, Eagles Aerie #706 and the Manitowoc Yacht Club. He married Jeannine Bruechert on May 26, 1951. The couple have four children, Nan (Steve) Oswald, Manitowoc; Chuck (Chris) Herzog, Manitowoc; Mike (Carol) Herzog, Maribel; Pat (Holly) Herzog, Maribel. There are 11 grandchildren, Brian Herzog, Christopher Oswald, Stephanie Herzog, Nicholas Oswald, Jennifer Herzog, Kelsey Oswald, Mackenzie Herzog, Sean-Patrick Oswald, Ben Herzog, Sara Herzog and Kelly Herzog. Also surviving are sisters, Pat (Norman) Ehr, Florida; Kathy Bundy, Manitowoc; one brother, Tom (Marge) Herzog, Green Bay; sister-in-law, Monica Herzog, Manitowoc; the Don Gallagher family of Green Bay whose support he so appreciated; nieces, nephews along with other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Robert Herzog. In his leisure hours, he treasured the pursuit rummage sale bargains and the elusive Little Sturgeon perch, a delicacy he delightfully supplied to his gathered family at his beloved cottage in Door County. Sunsets over the Bay, viewed on the patio supplied by Grandpa and Grandma provided many an opportunity for reflection and learning for two generations. He took great pride in his membership in the Greatest Generation always speaking with reverence and awe of those who sacrificed much more than him. As he approached the end of his life, he asked that a simple obituary tell the citizens of his beloved community that he tried to do his best for them. So great was his pride in the fact that all of his children followed him into public service that he asked that they wear the professional uniforms of the firefighter, the nurse and the U.S. Marine at his funeral. The family will greet friends at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home, 628 N. Water St., Manitowoc, on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. with a Prayer Service being held at 7 p.m. lead by Deacon Rich Bahnaman. Friends may also call at the funeral home on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until services begin at 10:15 at which time the cortege will leave for Holy Innocents Catholic Church. Funeral services will be 10:15 a.m. Friday at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home and 11 a.m. at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, 1121 N. 14th St., Manitowoc. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Gerald Foley with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Military rites will be accorded by the United States Marine Corps Reserve Unit of Green Bay. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that memorials be directed to a memorial fund that is being established in his name to support his lifelong passion for education opportunity for scholarships for students to enter a career in safety education or community service. A special thank you to the VNA Hospice program and dad s special nurse, Edie Headrick, who gave such tender, loving care. This is the final alarm for Chief Reine Herzog. WILLIAM J. HESS W.J. HESS, FOUNDER OF BOILER WORKS IN CITY DIES AT MENASHA William Hess, 76, founder of one of the pioneer marine boiler works on the Great Lakes, and who disposed of his interest here in 1908, to the Gunnell-Geer-West company operating the ship yards here, died this morning at his home in Menasha, at 358 Broad street, following a stroke which he suffered a few days ago. Mr. Hess, who has been living a retired life for a few years, will be buried in Manitowoc. The remains are to be brought to this city from Menasha tomorrow and burial will take place on Wednesday afternoon from the Masonic Temple. Mr. Hess was a Mason for over fifty years. Started Small Plant Born at Shoto, in this county, in 1856, Mr. Hess learned the boiler maker's trade and first established a small plant along the river bank here in the early days, east of Eighth street, and between Quay and Franklin streets. Later he removed to Cheboygan, Mich., where he set up a boiler shop but soon returned to Manitowoc where he established the Wm. Hess Boiler Works. He specialized in marine boilers, and also digesters and other equipment for paper mills. The business expanded and Mr. Hess incorporated the local plant under the name of the Manitowoc Steam Boiler Works. Early in 1900 the ship yards here was taken over by Chicago interests and incorporated as the Manitowoc Dry Dock Co. On July 10, 1908, they purchased the Hess plant here and changed the name to the Manitowoc Boiler Works Co. Mr. Hess remained with the new owners for several months. The company embarked on a big expansion program, which saw the growth of the plant now occupied by the Manitowoc Engineering Works and extending through two blocks and also down to the river bank. Locates at Green Bay Mr. Hess later left Manitowoc to locate in Green Bay where he became interested in a Valve Works, established a foundry plant and became a stock holder in a rug manufacturing company. A few years later he removed to Menasha where he established the Menasha Boiler Works, which he conducted up to the time of his retirement a few years ago. Mr. Hess was twice married. His first wife is deceased and he is survived by his widow, who was Miss Julia Pasewalk of this city, three children by his first marriage, Mrs. Walter Paulus, Cynthia and Fred Hess, all residents of California, and two grandchildren. Hess of This City, Learns that Albert Hess is Still Alive SON MEETS HIM IN WEST Brother, Now Located at Brazil, South America, Left Home as Lad of 9 Years - 18 Years Since Heard From Through a chance meeting of Albert Hess of Brazil, South America and Fred Hess of this city at Weed, California, a short time ago, two brothers, who for eighteen years have believed each other to be dead, will be reunited, the South American being a brother to William J. Hess of this city, the father of Fred Hess, the second party to the meeting in the West. Mr. Hess is now awaiting a letter from his brother, who was obliged to hasten his return to South America because of extensive business interests but it is probable that a meeting of the two will be arranged for next year. Albert Hess, who was born at Neshota, this county, where the Hess family resided years ago, left home as a boy of nine to seek for fortunes in the world and since that time he had not returned. For some time and at frequent intervals up to a time eighteen years ago and the boy and youth was heard from by relatives but sudden communications ceased and since 1899 word had been received from him to W.J. Hess of this city, a brother after efforts to learn the fate of the missing man, was forced to the conclusion he was dead, a belief which he has never had reason to dispute until the present. Recently Fred Hess, of this city, departed to make a home in the West and located at Weed, California, where he secured a position and is permanently established. A few days ago according to a letter received by family here, he was approached by a stranger who inquired as to his name, his family and after being told the fact, announced himself as Albert Hess, the brother of W.J. Hess of this city. He told the story of leaving home and recounted to the youth the tale of his travels, which have been extensive and but for the fact that he was obliged to hasten his return said he would visit him. He declared that he would get into communication with Mr. Hess immediately upon his arrival at his home in Brazil and a letter is daily expected here. The former Manitowoc man is engaged as plantation owner in Brazil and has extensive interests which require his personal supervision, the greater part of the time. Almost annually, however, he visits America to dispose of his coffee crop and it was on the occasion of one of these visits that while at Week, he learned that a man bearing his name was a resident of the city and started out to look him up, with the result that he found Fred Hess to be the son of his brother. Mr. Hess said he had failed in efforts to communicate with Manitowoc and had been forced to believe his family had either removed from here or members had died. A reunion of the two brothers in this city or at some other point in America is probable next year when Mr. Hess expects to again make the trip from Brazil. He has been successful in business and was much interested in the welfare of his brother here. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Fri., Jan. 3, 1908

May 1971/SSDI) ******** WOMAN AND THREE CHILDREN OVERCOME BY GAS, NEAR DEATH Cries of Babe Awaken Mrs. Albert Hessel and Save Her Life and That of Three Others in the House. A baby's cries saved the lives of Mrs. Albert Hessel and her three children early this morning when Mrs. Hessel was aroused to find the home was filled with gas, escaping from a coal stove. Mrs. Hessel, all butovercome (sic) by the gas was able to crawl to the door which she succeeded in opening and summoned neighbors who called a physician. The condition of Mrs. Hessel and the three children was reported favorable this afternoon, though all are still ill from effects of the gas. Mrs. Hessel was aroused early this morning by the cries of the babe and when she attempted to arise from her bed found herself so weak that she was unable to walk. Two of the children where also seriously affected by the gas but were revived when they were taken into the air. But for the awakening of Mrs. Hessel by the babe's cries it is probable that the family would have been beyond hope within a short time as the rooms were completely filled with gas and physicians say that they could have survived but a few moments longer. LOUIS HEYROTH "GRANDPA" Death has taken another of our early settlers. Louis Heyroth died here Wednesday morning. He was born 10 June 1823 in Malmerswende am Harz thus arriving at an age of 84 yrs. 7 mos. and 19 days. His birth home adjoined the birth residence of the well-known German poet, G.A. Buerger. In 1848 he came to America and settled in Sheboygan, and in 1850 he moved to Mishicott when it was still a wilderness, populated by Indians, and established a farm there which he operated for many years. He later opened a store which he operated with great success. He especially interested himself in the development of the Farmer's Fire Insurance Assoc. of Mishicott, and served about 30 years as its secretary. In 1853 he married Miss Sophie Bohlmann and this fortunate union produced 3 sons and a daughter. For the past four years he has been living with his son here, Ferdinand Heyroth, except for a short interval, and it was in this residence that he died yesterday morning. He had suffered off and on with asthma, but on Tuesday morning he smoked an entire cigar with relish and felt quite well. The funeral will be held at 2 o’clock on Sunday afternoon. The time at which Mr. Heyroth died is not known. At 3 o’clock this morning, his wife awoke to find him dead. He has been ill for some time but lately he has been improving. Last night he ate a hearty supper and before retiring, he smoked a part of a cigar, something that he has not done for a number of days. Before retiring, he said that he would not take any more medicine. He appeared to be in the best of spirits. His son, Ferdinand had been at Milwaukee yesterday and when he returned last night the father was sleeping soundly, no trouble having been apparent. When the family awoke at about 5 o’clock this morning, Mrs. Louis Heyroth was weeping by the side of her dead husband. She said that he had died while she was sleeping and that she thought it unnecessary to awaken the rest of the family. Mr. Heyroth was born in Molmers, Wende in the Hartz Mountains, Germany. In 1848 he came to American locating in Sheboygan. Two years later he moved to Mishicot where the balance of his life, with the exception of the last four years, has been spent. During those four years he has lived with his son in this city. At Mishicot, his life was passed as a merchant and a farmer. He conducted a store at Mishicot. Last week Friday with the assistance of many friends and relatives she celebrated her birthday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Winkelmiller with whom she has made her home for the past four years. She was Sophia Magdalena Bohlman, born in Mariansrode, Hanover, Germany and came with a brother to Sheboygan County in 1853. There she resided (?) years when she was married to Mr. Louis Heyroth. Mrs. Heyroth is an unusually rational and well preserved woman for one so old. She is still in possession of all her faculties. Her hearing is very good. Her sight is quite good and in fact she never has worn spectacles although she has read much and today she occasionally threads a needle and does some sewing. Her appetite is good and her hair has not yet turned grey. She is gifted with a well preserved memory and recalls songs that were sung in the fatherland when she was but a girl. She remembers well the One Hundred Year Rosebush that never failed to blossom every year at Hilesheim where she frequently visited in girlhood days. Her grandson, Ferdinand, saw this rosebush still flourishing when he visited this locality a few years ago. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Heyroth made their home on their farm consisting of eighty acres near Mishicot. Here they lived from 1854 to 1903 and here were born to them two sons, Louis and Ferdinand and their daughter, Mrs. Richard Winkelmiller. After conducting a store on the farm with his son for a few years before he and his wife went to live with a son at Manitowoc, where Mr. Heyroth died six years ago. Grandma Heyroth is a kind and sympathetic old lady who delights to talk of incidents and events of former days. Her mind is clear and her general condition indicates that she will live for some years notwithstanding her four score and thirteen already reached. EPHRAIM HEYWOOD Death of Ephraim Haywood "in whose house his aged sister was murdered by Anna Stroka, has quickly followed his sister to the grave". He fell from a load of hay last Fri. without seeming injury, but suddenly died on Sat. Der Nord Westen, 07 Oct. 1880 ********* Ephraim Heywood, of Rockland, died rather suddenly on Friday night. He was the brother of Nancy Heywood who was murdered about three weeks ago. He was an old man, over 69 years of age, but rather vigorous for a man of these years. On Friday he and his brother, Martin, were binding a load of hay which Ephraim intended to bring to market on the day following. While pressing down on the lever, Heywood slipped and fell. His brother, who was in the house at the time, found Ephraim lying on the threshing floor and while not feeling any pain, complained of being weak. He was taken to his house and Dr. O'Connell was summoned but the old man died before the doctor's arrival. It is a surprise to every one that such a light fall should prove fatal, as the lever on which he was prying was only two feet from the floor. He was buried in the cemetery here on Monday. HARRIET A. HEYWOOD DIED Haywood - March 27th, 1877, at Rockland, Manitowoc County, Wis., Mrs. Harriet A. Haywood, wife of Ephraim Haywood Esq., aged 53 years. Harriet A. Hale was born at Alsted, N.H., Sept. 22, 1823. On March 4, 1845 she was joined in marriage to Mr. Ephraim Haywood. Nine years subsequently in 1854 she removed with her husband to Manitowoc and for now 22 years she has made this county her home. A large circle of acquaintances had been formed and they were her warm friends, for she showed herself friendly but attended with all the sympathy and care that solicitous love could give. March 27th she closed her eyes upon all earthly scenes but closed them with expressions of Christian hope. She had been much withdrawn from religious privileges but manifested an anxiety at all times, to avail herself of them as she could. She had been a member of the Congregational church at Walpole, N.H. and manifestly carried with her, in her subsequent life, a love of her Redeemer's cause and for the fellowship of His people. That she had not been more faithful to Him was one of her deep regrets as she felt that she was entering the valley and shadow of death yet she avowed during her last lucid interval of life that Jesus was all her truth. NANCY HEYWOOD MAIDEN LADY MURDERED Manitowoc, Wis. Sept 20 – A horrible murder was committed in the town of Rockland this county, last night, Nancy Heywood, a maiden lady some 55 or 60 years of age, lived with her brother, Ephraim Heywood, upon his farm in the town of Rockland. Mr. Heywood left home yesterday afternoon to do an errand a few miles away, leaving at home his servant and the girl’s sister. Upon returning home his sister was not to be found, and upon searching for her, suspicious looking spots were discovered on the kitchen floor. Upon closer examination they proved to be marks of blood carefully wiped up. Going to the door, he saw a trail looking as though a heavy body had been dragged away. Following it up, it led to a wood pile, and, after removing a quantity of wood and lumber he discovered the body of his sister buried beneath with her throat cut from ear to ear, nearly severing her head. The two girls were immediately arrested, but have not yet been brought here. What purposes the murderers could have in committing the deed is beyond conjecture. The old lady was a harmless, inoffensive person, and had little, if anything at all, in her possession which would induce such a crime for plunder. She was an aunt of Charles Heywood of Brant. Chilton Times, October 2, 1880 ******* A Murder Confessed Mantitomac(sic), Wis., Sept. 29- Annie Stroker, who has been on trial for the murder of her employer, Miss Nancy Heywood, to-day was visited by her mother, who, holding up the Catholic cross and adjuring her to tell the truth, got from her a confession of the murder which confession she subsequently made in court. She said that Nancy scolded her and called her crazy, which so exasperated her that she pushed her down on the floor, and picking up an ax struck her on the head and neck, and finding her lifeless, dragged her body out into the yard and concealed her body. The girl is only seventeen years old and can neither read nor write. She has hitherto shown no signs of grief.
