ROBERT HODNE Hodne Death Is Called Suicide A salesman for the P.C. Monday Tea Company, who allegedly was short in his accounts, was found dead of carbon monoxide poisoning in the company’s panel truck on the River Road two miles west of Manitowoc Rapids Wednesday morning. Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen said the man, Robert G. Hodne, 38, of 1010 Pine St., Manitowoc, committed suicide by attaching a hose to the exhaust pipe and running it into the truck. Hodne was short $600 when the company auditor checked his books four months ago, Dr. Teitgen said. He had a date with the auditor to go over the accounts again last night when he disappeared. The auditor called his house late Tuesday night and was told Hodne wasn’t home. He called again at 6 a.m. Wednesday, and Mrs. Hodne said her husband was still missing. She filed a missing person report with police at 8:20 a.m. Farmer Spots Truck At the same time, Sheriff Lester Nichols received an anonymous telephone call from a farmer in the Rapids area who said he saw the Monday truck parked on the River Road a little before 5 p.m. Tuesday. The truck was still there Wednesday morning, and the caller told Nichols he thought the man inside was dead. The sheriff notified the coroner at 8:30 and the two went to the scene. Hodne was found dead. Coroner Teitgen figured he died at about 5 p.m. Tuesday. The car was filled with fumes, Nichols said, though the engine had run out of gas and stopped. Services for Hodne will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the St. James Episcopal Church, Manitowoc, the Very Rev. Herbert S. Stanton of St. Peter Church, Sheboygan Falls, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Hodne was born Feb. 7, 1916, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Mr. and the late Mrs. Ole Hodne. He attended schools there, including the Brooklyn Technical School. Following his graduation, he became a machinist at the U.S. Navy yard at Portsmouth, N.H. Joined Firm in 1948 In 1941 Hodne moved to Manitowoc where he was employed as a naval inspector until 1945. He worked at the Sears Roebuck Store from 1945 to 1948, when he became route man for the Monday company. In 1940 he married the former Evelyn Anderson of Brooklyn. The funeral of Mr. Hoes took place last Sunday afternoon, at St. James Church. The Services were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Cooper, and Rev. Mr. Pierpont, and Sermon by Rev. Mr. Stanley, of the First Presbyterian Society. The members of the Masonic Order, (of which Mr. Hoes was a member in good standing,) took charge of the last remains of him, who, in this life, was loved and repsected by all, and had them interred with ture(?) Masonic honors. By his death, the Lodge mourns an earnest, faithful, highly esteemed, and accomplished brother, and society one of its worthiest citizens. How oft has this departed brother sought the altar with those kind and true ones, who do there congregate, to worship Masonically-and where the heart and the land grows warm-where the strife of the cold world without, for place and power is forgotten, and where eye meets eye in love and true devotion. His ear now deaf, had drank in that heaven-born music, and interpreted the faint whisper; his eye now dim, has beheld, and his heart, now still, has conceived the beauties which await the faithful. Then how blest the thought, that there is a rest for this beloved one beyond the tomb-a seat made vacant for him in that Celestial Lodge. Perhaps there are some dear ones, a father, a mother, a brother, or a sister, whose hearts are now breaking with sorrow, for him who now sleeps on yonder hill. Then let us tread lightly, for how blest must be the consolation to them, to know, that although he might have died far from home, and in a strange land, a brother's ear caught his last whisper, a brother's hand smoothed his dying pillow, and closed those eyes in their last sleep, a sleep that knows no waking this side of the tomb. The Manitowoc Pilot, Manitowoc, Wis. Friday, August 5, 1859 P. 3 ********* In its appropriate place in today's paper will be found the announcement of the death of Mr. B.F. Hoes, who died in this village on Saturday last. The deceased was but twenty-nine years of age-just in that period of life when the mind and body has become matured, and the man be best suited for useful and vigorous exertions. He was a resident of Manitowoc a little over three years, and during that time seems to have made a universally good impression, and we cannot hear of one in the community who does not speak with regret of his loss. He seems to have possessed the warm affection and esteem of his friends and intimate associates, to a high degree-the respect of all-the ill will of no one. And this universal sentiment of kindness and good feeling which followed poor Frank to his last resting place on earth, and was evinced by the large attendance of sympathising friends at the funeral services, was not the result of mere negative good nature, and an absence of energy and positive qualities in his character; but was, on the contrary, due to the active virtues, the strong sense of justice, the ever present kindliness of a disposition which, whatever its defects, they seem to have been lost sight of in the presence of so many noble and attractive traits of character. Peace to his ashes! One who has led so pure and blameless a life on earth need have no fear to face the future; and when we, too, pass away from this world of strife and enmity, we ask no better tribute to our memory than that which public sentiment has accorded to Frank. Surely it seems true of him- "None knew him but to love him- None named him but to praise." The Manitowoc Pilot, Manitowoc, Wis. Friday August 5, 1859 P. 2 ******* B.F. I have no idea why unless the tombstone was erected some time later after the burial. I consulted with the cemetery office and she concluded this should be the same Benjamin Hoes.

MARTHA J. HOES Frank Hoes was called here from Dubuque on Monday by a notice of the death of his mother. Manitowoc Pilot, Thursday, October 23, 1890 P. 3 *********** DIED. Hoes.-At the residence of her son-in-law in this city on Monday Oct. 20, Mrs. Martha J. Hoes. Mrs. Hoes was one of these women who will be sadly missed by all her associates. She was a woman of the kindliest impulses, ever willing to make personal sacrifices for any who appealed to her and always impelled by genuine charity to say and do only that which would bring gladness to those with whom she came in contact. Her name was always a synonym of all that was generous and tender. She was born in Salem, N.Y., March 7, 1830, and was married to R.H. Hoes at Cambridge, Sept. 19, 1853. In 1857, in company with her husband she came to Manitowoc. She was left a widow in 1870, with two children. Of a deeply religious nature, there was nothing somber in her faith and the kindness she dispensed spoke in eloquent terms of her elevated belief. She leaves two children, both of whom are married, Mr. Frank Hoes of Dubuque and Mrs. Albert Landreth of this city. Her funeral took place on Wednesday the services being conducted by Rev. Mr. Bossard of Oconto. Manitowoc Pilot, Thursday, October 23, 1890 P. 3 ******** [Mrs. R.H. Hoes/bur. 10-22-1890/age 62/cause: injury from a fall] ******** (First publication Oct. 30, 1890.) RICHARD H. HOES Died, in this city, of consumption, June 7th 1870, Richard H. Hoes, aged 46 years, 7 months and 1 day. But few excelled him. The subject of the above sketch was born Nov. 6, 1923, at Stuyvesant Falls, Columbia Co. New York, where he was reared amid the quiet domestic comforts of his father's farm. In 1844 he went to Hudson City and engaged in mercantile pursuits, which he followed for two years. He then became interested in the construction of Railroads and as a contractor assisted in the construction of the following named roads: One Road in Central Vermont. The Rutland & Washington Railroad, in New York. The Western Vermont Railroad. The Cincinnati & Marrietta R.R., Ohio. During the year 1856 he came to Manitowoc and was engaged in the building of the M. & M. R.R. and so continued until the project was abandoned. Our townsmen will recall with pleasure the several years that he was engaged in the store of J.E. Platt, Esq., where he won hosts of friends. As village Treasurer he served with honor, than whom no incumbent gave more universal satisfaction. A paralytic stroke several years since rendered him incapable for active life, notwithstanding which he was engaged in the building of some of our finest vessels, the Jessie Phillips, C.L. Johnston, etc. May consolation from on high be granted his bereaved family for the loss of a kind husband and indulgent father whose precepts and example are needed especially around the hearthstone. Our whole community will mourn the loss of a cultivated and polished gentleman, an honest and upright citizen whom all honored and respected, one who leaves no enemies, but hosts of warm hearts who regret his seemingly untimely decease. Franklin, nr. the lake" FROM RALPH PLUMB'S BOOK: "On April 15, 1861 the Chilton and Manitowoc Plankroad Company was organized by Calumet county men with a capital of $200,000 and townships were authorized to aid the project. Immediately after the war a state road was ordered laid out between Kiel and Manitowoc, W. Bach, A. Krieger and P. P. Fuessenich acting as commissioners and another from Manitowoc, to Taychedah, via Kiel, H. F. Belitz being one of the incorporators. It was failure of the latter project that caused the incorporation of a private company in 1870, the Manitowoc and Kiel Plankroad Company by J. Schuette, T. Windiate, R. H. Hoes, H. Berners, C. Gustaveson, S. Samuelson, A. Schad and E. B. Treat, with a capital stock of $30,000. The days of plank roads and private enterprises were soon over, however, and one by one these were incorporated by county or township, both these units now having full charge and maintenance of all the thoroughfares of the county. The Kiel and Sheboygan turnpike was the last to be made free, the event occurring in 1900." 1860 FEDERAL CENSUS - MTWC CITY WARD #1: 37 22 278 285 R.H.
