ADA JACKSON Ada Bouril Jackson, former Saratoga resident, died Sept. 7 in Tempe, Ariz., two days before her 96th birthday. Jackson Marie Bouril Jackson was born Sept. 9, l9l6, the youngest and last surviving of the four children born to Charles Joseph and Anna Marie Oberland Bouril of Manitowoc, Wisc.; a family proud of their Bohemian Czech heritage. Jackson was a bit of a rebel against family discipline during her childhood, having fits and standoffs with her siblings and parents. She had an independent and self- sufficient personality, even then! She was the only member of her family to graduate from college, earning a teaching degree in physical education from Wisconsin State University, La Crosse in l938. She taught for several years, and when she received her first paycheck she thought, "Gee, I'm getting paid for this!" Then the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and America went to war. Jackson became a "Rosie the Riveter", working in a factory in Milwaukee for Allis Chalmers. When the war was over, she decided to travel, and she wanted to give her job "to someone who needed it more than I did". Travelling first to Florida and then to California where her sister, Louise, lived, she found that she loved the greater West and made the West her home thereafter. Her first job was on a guest ranch (owned by the sister of Randolph Hearst) where she said her "gift of gab" allowed her to become a tour guide. Then, one Memorial Day weekend, she was asked to work as a waitress. "That's when I found out about tips," she later said, and she liked the work. After that, Jackson waitressed in a Hungarian restaurant in Tucson. While there, she applied for and received a job with Hobergs, a resort north of San Francisco, ultimately becoming the head waitress. Hobergs later built a new resort in Borrego, Calif., where she was in charge of the dining room. With this move, her interest in archeology was whetted. During those years at Borrego, Jackson studied archeology, purchased a surplus World War II Jeep, and roamed the desert nearby, further developing that interest in archeology. She formed an annual routine of working both the winter and summer resort seasons and travelling in between. She worked the winters at a resort named Castle Hot Springs, east of Wickenburg, Ariz., and summers at the Saratoga Inn in Wyoming. During these years, this independent woman traveled throughout the United States and Canada. In 1951, Jackson made her first trip to Europe, visiting a niece in England, and then toured much of Europe alone. "That was the era of Europe on $5 a day," she said. Later, she raised it to $10 per day. Throughout her life, she toured the world; Europe, Central America, China, Australia, South America, Japan and Taiwan. Jackson kept the Saratoga folks informed of her travels with a "Here and There" column in the Saratoga Sun. Her last major travel was to China in the 1990s. When asked how she could afford these trips, she said "I economized when I could, I had my tips, and I had stock market tips". She learned enough to invest in the stock market and was disciplined in following her investments and the advice of her contacts. Jackson moved permanently to Saratoga in 1961, living in what was affectionately known as the "Mouse House." In 1971, Jackson married and spent a year traveling with her husband. The marriage didn't last and they separated, though she did keep the Jackson name, liking the simplicity of not having to spell and explain the name Bouril. Jackson worked at the Old Baldy Club in Saratoga as a waitress, and later as a tour guide. During these years, she became an avid "brookie" fisherman, an outdoors camper in her VW bus, and in American Indian archaeology, as she called it: being an "Injun" hunter. She became active in Wyoming archaeology, joining the Wyoming Archaeological Society and enjoying numerous discussions with professional archaeologists at the University of Wyoming. She also joined the local archaeology club and was instrumental in developing the World Atlatl Championships in Saratoga. These contests were held for a number of years, attracting people from as far away as China. These contests are still held in various locations in the U.S., though no longer in Saratoga, except in the local schools. Perhaps Jackson's finest archaeological achievement was the permanent "Katharine Bakeless Nason" archeology exhibit in the Saratoga Museum, housing numerous archaeological artifacts donated by local residents and the University of Wyoming. Also associated with the museum is the Atlatl Press, with funds available to encourage the publishing of archaeological information germane to the museum - again thanks to Jackson. Jackson's eyesight gradually failed from macular degeneration. However, she planned for her retirement in the Phoenix area, which she knew, and also had longtime and very close friends from the Saratoga Inn days. It was important for Jackson, with no children or spouse, to arrange for her own retirement care so she would not become a burden to others. Jackson made the move to Friendship Village in the early ‘90s where she was active immediately, founding the "Happy Trekkers" hiking club. She continued to hike until knee replacement surgery and age limited her stamina. Jackson will be interred with other family members at the Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc. Memorials in Jackson's name may be made to the Saratoga Museum. Source: http://www.saratogasun.com/node/5700

HIRAM JACKSON HIRAM JACKSON, RESIDENT HERE 70 YRS., IS DEAD Well Known Early Day Settler Recalled Time when There Were but Three Horses on South Side--Came Here in 1846 Hiram Jackson, one of the oldest settlers of Manitowoc county, having resided here continuously for 70 years, died at his home on the Calumet road early this morning, aged 77. Death was due to old age though for three months Mr. Jackson had been confined to his bed. Coming to Manitowoc in 1846 as a boy of 7 years, Mr. Jackson recalled the days when there were but three horses on the south side in this city and frequently mentioned the fact when he came to the city to spend a day with old-time friends, which was one of the joys of his declining days. Mr. Jackson had a retentive memory and his stories of pioneer days of the county always found ready listeners. He delighted in the company of young people and was popular with them. Mr. Jackson had made his home on the farm on the Calumet road, where his death occurred, for many years, and was well and favorably known in the city and throughout the county. He was active, despite his advanced age, up to a few months ago and retained an interest in public affairs. Besides his aged widow, Mr. Jackson is survived by six children, four daughters and two sons, and by thirteen grandchildren. Surviving children are-Mrs. S.V. Ramsey of Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. C. Stephenson, Wauwatosa, Wis.; Mrs. Louis Summit and Mrs. E. Fehring and Robt. (sic) and Cyrus Jackson, this city. The funeral will be held from the late home Thursday afternoon at two o'clock. Dated April 11th, 1916. By the Court, John Chloupek, County Judge. E.S. Schmitz, attorney. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Wednesday, April 12, 1916 P.4 ********* The following is a 1915 article about Hiram: COUNTY'S OLDEST LIVING SETTLER IS FAIR VISITOR HIRAM JACKSON, WHO HAS RESIDED IN COUNTY 70 YEARS, INTERESTED SPECTATOR AT BIG SHOW TODAY FAMILY SETTLED HERE IN 1846. JACKSON NOW 77 Hiram Jackson, one of the oldest, if not the oldest living settler of the county, is a visitor at the county fair and despite his 77 years, interested himself in the exhibits and entertainment of the show. Mr. Jackson, whose home is on Rural Route No. 1, has been a resident of Manitowoc county for nearly 70 years and there are few who can equal his record. The Jackson family came originally from the state of Vermont, and from the same locality that Uncle Emmerson, Sheriff Blake and Capt. Morse hailed from. The Jacksons had relatives in Pennsylvania who induced them to leave their homes in the jagged realms of the "Green Mountains" to locate on farms in the Quaker state. There they remained but a year when they decided to go on further west. Mrs. Jackson, Hiram's mother, who, by the way, was a woman of literary attainments, had been in correspondence with a nephew who was employed in the sawmills at the Rapids, this county, and his glowing description of the country in this locality finally led the family to moving here. It was at a time of a great exodus from the east to the west. Two neighboring families also caught the fever and concluded to join the Jacksons on their trip here. After selling out their belongings the three families set out in a "prairie schooner," starting from Erie, Pa., on their tedious journey which took them six weary weeks to make. In the vicinity of Chicago one of the families left the party to locate there and the other family concluded to remain in the vicinity of Milwaukee. The Jackson family, however, was bent to make this point, the trip from Sheboygan taking three days. On a Saturday evening just after dusk, the family reached a summit overlooking the village valley of the Rapids. On both sides of the river they beheld many Indians and their many campfires seemed to blaze forth a greeting of welcome. There were no stores in the village at that time and the settlers had to go to Manitowoc to buy their supplies from an Indian trader named Peleg Glover, who conducted a store at the intersection of York and Sixth streets. Jackson's horses were shod by Mr. Roberts, father of Dr. Roberts, whose little shop stood on the lake front on the south side, at a point from which a pier was being built out in the lake the same year. The Manitowoc river was still in its primeval state, no bridges having been built and no dredging done. To reach the smithy Mr. Jackson had to ford the river at its mouth which at certain times in the year proved the shallowest of our waterway. Such fording today would c ertainly prove a hazardous undertaking. The family located on a farm on the Calumet road, a few miles west of the present site of the city, the farm becoming a landmark in the county. Here the son, Hiram, and his estimable spouse are spending their declining years in comfort and contentment. His 77 years weigh but lightly on Mr. Jackson, and from all appearances he will certainly live long enough to substantiate his claim some day of being the oldest living pioneer settler in the county. MARGARET (HERUDAY) JACKSON AND BABY JACKSON LEFT WIFE WEEK AFTER WEDDING, COMES BACK TO FIND HER DEAD OKLAHOMA MAN, SON OF WEALTHY PARENTS, RETURNS VOLUNTARILY WHEN WARRANT IS OUT FOR ARREST, BUT TOO LATE. TWO RIVERS GIRL DESERTED AT ALTAR GIVES UP LIFE Deserted, almost at the altar, her husband having left her six days after their wedding, found ill and in want by poor authorities of the city, Margaret Harade (sic) Jackson, a former Two Rivers girl died at the hospital yesterday following an operation for appendicitis and the birth of a babe. The child did not survive and mother and babe will be buried at Evergreen, services for Mrs. Jackson being held from the vault at the cemetery tomorrow at 10 o’clock. Jack Jackson, the husband, said to be the son of wealthy parents in Oklahoma, returned to the city last night, too late to see his girl-bride alive. Mrs. Jackson died in the belief that her husband had intended to desert her and her unborn babe. Following Jackson’s disappearance three weeks ago, and the discovery of the plight of his wife, a warrant was issued for his arrest and Sheriff Schuette with District attorney Healy had located the man when word was received that he was to return to the city voluntarily, and he was not arrested. Jackson is said to have been in communication with his parents and it is said had returned intending to care for his wife. Jackson assured the authorities that he would meet all expenses of care of his wife and her burial and any court expenses and will not be prosecuted as the death of his wife removes the cause for prosecution on grounds of desertion. Mrs. Jackson, who was Margaret Harade (sic), was born in this city and later the family resided at Two Rivers. She was 18 years old. IDA JACOB (d. 1899) SHROUDED IN GLOOM. Mrs. Elijah Houghton and Mrs. Bernard Jacobs(sic) Respond to Final Summons- Both Victims of Consumption After weary months of suffering, borne with that cheerful resignation which had characterized her life, Mrs. Bernard Jacobs, gave up the hard fought battle, the spirit taking its flight from earth and entering upon its eternal heritage, at an early hour to-day. For six years the deceased has been a sufferer from consumption, but not until within the past few weeks had she been obliged to take to her bed. Although the ravages of disease were apparent, death was not expected. Ida Hacker, the subject of this sketch, was born at Liberty, Sept. 18, 1868, and her early life was spent in that town. November 11, 1887, she was united in marriage to Bernard Jacobs. They took up their residence at 1518 Clark street where they have since resided, the husband being employed at the Seating factory. Three children blessed the union; one child died in infancy, the other two, with the father survive to mourn their loss. One brother Emil Hacker, and three sisters, Mrs. Wm. Welk, Mrs. E. Gerpheide and Mrs. Knut Rudy all of this city also survive. The sympathy of their many friends will be extended to the family in this sad hour of affliction. That she should thus early be called, in the summer of life be taken away is one of those unrevealed mysteries of our Heavenly father that no human intellect has yet been able to reconcile and which makes the believer's task so difficult to say in sincerity and resignation, "Thy will, not mine be done."The funeral will be held fromt he late home Tuesday afternoon. MILTON JAEGER The distinguished flying cross was awarded recently to Second Lt. Milton A. Jaeger, 23-year-old Manitowoc Ninth air force P-38 Lightning pilot, who was reported missing in action following a dive-bombing mission near Dreux, France on Aug. 14, 1944. The citation singled out Lt. Jaeger for his extraordinary achievement in aerial flight against the enemy from May to August, 1944. During this period Lt. Jaeger participated in many dangerous missions over northern and western Europe. His aerial proficiency and tactical skill were particularly marked by the aggressive manner in which he attacked and destoyed enemy installations, equipment and material in the face of great difficulties.
