ALBERT D. JOHNSTON FORMER LOCAL MAN AUTO VICTIM A.D. JOHNSTON MEETS DEATH AT WATERSMEET Found Dead When Auto Leaves Road and Wrecked Albert D. Johnston, former Manitowoc resident, familiarly known here as "Bert" Johnston, and a brother of Mrs. Robert Markham and Mrs. Clara Bressler, met death on the highway near Watersmeet, in the northern part of the state, yester- day when his automobile left the road and was wrecked. Mr. Johnston's dead body was found in the car by occupants of another machine which witnessed tragedy. Message carrying news of the accident were received here last evening and R.H. Markham and Mrs. Bressler departed for the north to take charge of the body and acompany (sic) it to this city for burial. They are expected to arrive tomorrow and funeral announcement will be made later. Heart Attack Cause Death? According to information received it is believed that Mr. Johnston was a victim of a heart stroke rather then injuries resulting when his car left the highway. Occupants of the other car, who were behind Mr. Johnston say that the Johnston machine was proceeding at a moderate rate when suddenly it seemed to waver on the road and suddenly left the highway. The car was damaged but Mr. Johnston did not appear to have been injured although when the scene was reached he was found to be dead at the wheel of his car. Mr. Johnston was returning to his home at Sylvania where he was manager of a large resort. He had been on a trip to Watersmeet to accompany his daughter, Mrs. George Rupp and his children home after they had visited at Sylvania when the tragedy occurred. He was alone in the automobile at the time and whether death was due to heart failure or to some injury will not be determined until report of physicians is made. Was Born in this City A native of Manitowoc Mr. Johnston who was the son of Peter Johnston, first mayor of Manitowoc, was born here July 3, 1860 and up to thirty-five years ago made his home here. He removed from the city permanently at that time, although he was a frequent visitor here having been here about a year ago for a visit. He located at Bessemer, Mich., where he was prominent in civic affairs, having for twenty years been president of the Bessemer school board which honored him by naming a new school for him, the A.D. Johnston school erected in recent years. Mr. Johnston was also head of the Gogebic county highway commission and had taken an active part in public affairs of his adopted home. Leaves Widow and 3 Children Mr. Johnston was married in 1885 at New Londaon to Miss Margaret Cannon, of that city, who with three children, Mrs. George Rupp, of Watersmeet, James Cannon Johnston, of Tulsa, Okla., and Miss Helen at home, survive him. There are six grandchildren and a brother Alex Johnston of San Diego, and two sisters Mrs. Markham and Mrs. Bressler, this city, also survive. Thirty-five years ago Mr. Johnston was manager of the Williams House in this city, having conducted the hotel for two or three years at that time, just previous to leaving the city to locate at Besmer (sic). Son Met Tragic Death Mr. Johnston's death is the third in the family within two years. His son was killed two years ago in an accident and a sister died suddenly about the same time. The body will be shipped to this city today or tomorrow and funeral services will be held here under the auspices of the Masonic order of which Mr. Johnston was a member. News of the death of Mr. Johnston comes as a great shock to relatives and to many friends who remember him and who held him in high esteem. PETER JOHNSTON (d. 1904) FIRST MAYOR OF CITY IS DEAD. Peter Johnston, Pioneer City Executive, Responds to Final Summons on Earth. CAME TO THE CITY IN 1855. Served in Many Offices and was Loading Man of City.. On the day that his daughter, Mrs. Robert Markham, in this city, was celebrating the fifteenth anniversary of her marriage, Peter Johnston, first mayor of Manitowoc and most prominent of early day residents of the city, died Monday at the home of his son at Beaver Island, Mich., where he had been visiting. News of the death reached here in the evening and brought sorrow to many who had known him in life. Mr. Johnston was one of the pioneer residents of Manitowoc and left the city three weeks ago. A native of Scotland, born near Edinburgh, Mr. Johnston came to Manitowoc in 1855 and during his active life was one of the leading men of the city. In 1861, with James Hodges, Mr. Johnston purchased the north pier and owned it for many years throughout the war. In 1870, when the village incorporated, Mr. Johnston was chosen to head the city government, being elected as the first mayor over C. Hl. Smith, a democrat, carrying all of the four wards of the city. The next year he was reelected, defeating John Franz and under his administration the city took on a boom that resulted in many improvements. The Tenth street bridge was erected, cemetery improvements were made and the first fire engine was secured to the city. A bond issue was floated at this time. Mr. Johnston continued as the city’s executive until 1872, and four years later was elected to the legislature, being the assemblyman from the Third district. Mr. Johnston was prominent and an active leader in every movement that had the city’s advancement as its object and was treasurer of the Jones Library when it was first launched. In 1860 there was organized the “Burns” society, patriotic Scotchmen honoring their poet, and he was vice president of the society, which was maintained for years largely through his efforts. As mayor Mr. Johnston presided when the cornerstone of the Presbyterian church was laid and was identified with many other of the city’s first projects. Mr. Johnston was born at Dunblaine, Scotland, January 19, 1831 and was married to Clarissa Louise Boughton, Dec. 25, 1856, her death occurring in 1872. Four years later Mr. Johnston was again married to Mrs. Regina Hodges, who died in 1902. Since retiring from active pursuits Mr. Johnston had made his home with his daughter Mrs. Robt. Markham and departed three weeks ago to visit in Michigan. Although advanced in age being 73, he had enjoyed good health and his demise was sudden and unexpected. Mr. Johnston was a man of strong character, and a leader who was recognized among men. So closely identified with the early history of the city, it was but natural that he should maintain a keen interest in latter day progress and he was ever absorbed in the welfare of the municipality. A family of children survive, being William, Beaver Island, Mich., Albert, Iron Mt., Mich., Peter B., Alaska, Mich., Alex, Idaho; Robert; Mrs. Alice Markham, this city; Mrs. G. The wedding was celebrated at the Higgins's home on North Tenth Street Wednesday evening at 6:30 o'clock in the presence of 100 guests, midst surroundings of beauty and in perfect appointment. The pretty and impressive ring service of the Episcopal ritual was used in the ceremony at which Rev. B. Talbot Rogers of Fond du Lac, officiated. Prof. Joseph Kaiser presided at the piano and the bridal party entered to the music of Mendelsohn's wedding march and was received in an alcove of the large living room where the service was read. Ferns and plants surrounded the improvised altar place while from the ceiling directly overhead the bride and groom swung a pure white dove, the effect being very pretty. Promptly at the appointed hour, the bridal procession wended its way to the altar, the bride and attendants entering down the winding stairway, proceeded by Misses Helen Hunt of Neenah and Dorrance Harwood of Lincoln, Neb., each bearing the end of a long streamer of ribbon, the other ends of which were gathered up by Misses Helen Higgins and Grace Pritchard as the party proceeded and finally formed a semi-circle about the bride and groom as they took their station facing the clergyman. The bride, upon the arm of her father, was preceded by little Miss Geraldine Higgins as ring bearer and Miss Higgins, maid of honor. The bride's party was met at the entrance to the room by the groom, attended by his groomsman, Ted Jones, a brother. In decoration of the spacious home a profusion of cut flowers and smilax made an admirable effect while holly wreaths and clusters lent a holiday air to the surroundings. The color schemes were elegant and in short formed an exquisite setting for the nuptials. Handsome gowns of the ladies in evening dress gave the function added tone. The handsome gowns of the wedding party gave an added beauty to the pretty function. The bride was gowned in white satin trimmed with Princess lace carrying a shower bouquet of lilies of the valley while her maid of honor wore a creation of pink chiffon and messaline and carried bouquet of pink sweet peas and ferns. The Misses Hung, Harwood, Higgins and Pritchard wore green radium silk and little Miss Geraldine Higgins was attired in white. Mrs. Higgins wore a costume of grey crepe trimmed with real lace and Mrs. Jones a black velvet gown trimmed with point lace. Miss Higgins is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Higgins who, for the last five years have resided in this city coming here from Neenah when Mr. Higgins projected the Traction Line. She was born and reared in Neenah where she received her early education. Her studies were concluded at Ferry Hill, Lake Forest. A charming girl in every way, she has the unusual faculty of making and retaining friends that makes her a favorite in any circle she may be called upon to grace. She has at all times reflected the graces of a sweet disposition, vivacity of temperment and charming personality, rounding out her life into one of symmetry and lovliness that will no doubt be equally appreciated in her Southern home as it has been in the city. Mr. Jones is a son of Mrs. Frank Jones, who was born here and who is so well known as a young man of sterling worth as to need no further tribute of character. He graduated from the North side High School and attended the University of Wisconsin where he attained distinction on the athletic field and as a student. As a member of several fraternities he participated in the social life of the school in no small degree. In addition to other honors he is a Knight Templar Mason and at the time of his admission into the order was the youngest ever to have attained this distinction. Of late he has been engaged in the lumber business of Forest City, Ark., where he is recognized for his business ability and stability of character. It is in this place that he has erected a pretty home for his bride and there is an expressed regret that these business connections in the southern state will take away one of the most popular newly wedded couples of Manitowoc. Mr. Jones and bride departed from the city at 10 o'clock via Appleton Jct., for Chicago and will visit St. Louis, Memphis and other points before going to Forest City, Ark., which will be the future home of the couple who will be home after February 1. Guests from out of town at the wedding were: Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Jones, Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Humphrey, Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Jones, John Schlosser, Miss Helen Humphrey, Appleton; Dr. and Mrs. H.L. Family services will be held at 3:15 o'clock. Manitowoc Daily Herald, June 29, 1901 p.3 ******** FRANK P. JONES IS MOURNED A Good Citizen and Fine Neighbor is no More. SOME TRAITS OF HIS CHARACTER. Being Essentially a Benevolent Man he did Much Good. ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THE UNDERDOG. His Funeral was Attended by a Great Concourse of People Who Testified to Widespread Sorrow. By the death of Frank P. Jones the community lost one of it most estimable men. When the news reached this city that he had suddenly expired while out driving near Unity, a sense of deep bereavement took possession of the hearts of men, women and children, for no one who had ever looked into the kindly eye of the man now sleeping in his final couch but was attracted and attached to him. Frank Jones had a big heart, which beat in generous sympathy for those less fortunate than himself, and it seemed a passion with him to put some young fellow on the road of life where his energy could be used profitably. It is not once but many times that he drew aside some boy of slender means, who had ambition, and while engaging him in conversation would find out just the bent of his hopes and being assured of their genuineness he provided the ways and means for his education. Quite a few of his protégés, some yet the subjects of his benefactions, while others had graduated into prosperous business and professional men, stood over his bier on Sunday and wept. They had lost a friend indeed who had stood by them, strong and helpful, when lowering clouds of adverse circumstances menaced their nature, and they can now sing with Tennyson. Dear friend far off, my lost desire So far, we near in woe and weal O loved thee most, when most I feel There is a lower and a higher; Known and unknown, human, divine; Sweet human hand and lips and eye; Dear heavenly friend that canst not die Mine, Mine, for ever, ever mine. Strange friend, past, present and to be, Loved deeplier, darklier understood. Behold I dream a dram of good And mingle all the world with thee. Benevolence was the most striking characteristic in the life of Mr. Jones. Not that charity which vaunteth much and then panoplys itself in glaring venture so all the world may know. His kindliness was as unobstructive as it was beautiful. He had been known to repeatedly hunt out some waif and taking him to a clothier dress him in warm clothes, but the good impulse didn’t stop here; he would search out the gamin’s home, and frequently has he entered the squalid and rickety habitation there to minister in substantial manner to the wants of the impoverished. And the beauty of these deeds of kindness was that his left hand didn’t know what his right was doing. And moreover this spirit of splendid benevolence sought activity in other directions. He was ceaselessly looking out for the pleasure of his friends. It was not in him to take the lion’s share of sport if others were about; he was happiest if those near him were living in the sunshine and drawing sweetness into the hours as they came and departed. Ed. Hamilton tells an apropos story illustrating this trait: Frank Jones and Mr. Hamilton went fishing some three weeks ago. They had had their lines out for several hours with indifferent lunch, but Frank was cheery and hopeful all the time, making the moments fly by his jovial remarks. When least expected a big fish made a bite at Frank’s bait and he was instantly busy playing him. While moving his rod to and fro, Mr. Hamilton says Frank would frequently exclaim, “Ed, I wish the fish had bitten at your bait instead of mine.” It was this same spirit of self abengatio in social life that made him welcome wherever he went; he always sacrificed his own that some one else’s pleasure might be increased. It is so often that men like to look upon the worst side of their fellow men. They ever probe for the dark strata and ignore every good attribute; not so, however, with Frank Jones. He always saw the best in men. It has often been said to Mr. Jones, “So and So is no good,” and then would follow a tissue of the man’s bad qualities. The kindly man would listen attentively and when his time came to reply, he would say, “So and So is also”, here telling the fellow’s good traits. In his fifty-five years of life he was never known to say an evil word of a neighbor, a workman, or of anybody. It was always the other way. Mr. Hamilton said he could not recall of a single instance in which he had spoken ill of his fellow man. And this is the testimony of those who knew him intimately during his life. It was only last Saturday three men were on the train coming up from Milwaukee to Manitowoc. Mr. Jones was the subject of comments and stories were told relating to him. One of the three mentioned that Mr. Jones had assisted young men to procure educations which fitted them for professional life. Soon after the statement was made, one of the listeners withdrew his cigar from his lips and slowly blowing away the smoke fell into a reminiscent mood. Looking up shortly afterwards he began: “It is all of ten years ago, perhaps a little more, that I was seated at a desk struggling to learn the typewriter. I had already got three sheets printed when Frank walked up to where I was sitting and said, 'Charlie, did you print these?’ I replied in the affirmative. 'Well,' said he, ‘you should learn shorthand.’ And shorthand I studied and I will always remember that Frank made it possible for me to acquire this accomplishment.” These instances might be multiplied a great many times. That death came without warning and painless was a fitting climax as a reward for his unselfish career. On last Friday morning, accompanied by three men he drove form Unity, a distance of about nine miles. The evening previous rain had fallen, and the morning was cool and delicious. The green fields and wooded groves through which they passed were fresh and beautiful and birds sang their sweetest. Mr. Jones was passionately fond of the country; the lakes and dells, the green sward, the leafy bower, the sighing rivulet or towering peak, but he drew peculiar charm from the presence of birds and particularly blue birds. And let it be said that no lurking evil finds lodgment in the souls of men whose inner impulses respond harmoniously to the song of a bird, the presence of a flower, or the sound of music. While on the way Mr. Jones turned to his companion, Mr. Booth, and pointed out a blue bird, remarking how fond he was of them. “I shall count the number we meet", he said, and he proceeded to do so. All the way out he was chatty and buoyant, and when nearing his destination, passing a big lumber pile, he asked Mr. Booth as to the ownership of the lumber and Mr. Booth looked athwart for a moment and before he could reply Mr. Jones had passed to “that bourne from whence no traveler returns.” There amid the fields he loved with the birds chanting their psalms the man whom Manitowoc mourns, fell into his last slumber. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, Dr. Pritchard and Geo. Cooper having charge of the services at the house. The Rev. Mr. Gray, as chaplain of the Masonic chapter, conducted the religious rites, and the masons, with Dr. H.L. Banzhaf as master, had charge of the ceremonies at the grave. The doctor officiated at the beautiful service with dignity and impressiveness. The six active pall bearers were: Oscar Alter, E.G. Nash, W.A. Walker, Dr. G. W. Patchen, R H. Markham, and Dr. Fraser. The honorary pall bearers were M. H. Murphy, A.C. Miller, Rhinehardt Rahr, L.J. Nash, Frank Canright, and C.F. Smalley. During the service at the house, William L. Davis sang a solo to the accompaniment of Miss Mollie Hall. In the procession from the house to the cemetery fully one hundred carriages were in line, each of the occupants testifying by his presence his sorrow. Among those who were here from out of town to attend the funeral were: T.C. and Mrs. Shove, H. Humphrey, of Milwaukee; George Jones, of Appleton, J.E. Hamilton, of Two Rivers, Henry Thomas, of Fox Lake, and Griffin Thomas, of Columbus Junction, Iowa, and Roy Jones, of Appleton, George and Miss Grace Hamilton, of Two Rivers, W.A. It was noticed that the boys belonging to the Northside Athletic association had hauled the flag half mast over the school house as a tribute to the memory of Mr. Jones. Frequently the association was the recipient of his bounty. Mr. Jones left his wife and two sons to mourne his loss and they are bereft of a good father and husband. **Note: In the same issue there are several individual testimonials from prominent members of the community. Manitowoc Pilot, July 4, 1901 ******** DEATH OF FRANK P. JONES Manitowoc lost a good citizen when Frank P. Jones died. In him there was no guile. He exemplified in a noble way those moral attributes which differentiate the man of superior impulse from the selfish and the sordid. His point of life was benevolence of thought and action and within the jurisdiction of these holy impulses he embraced the men and women of his own station as well as the proletariat. He was equally courteous to the man who had an income of $50,000 a year and the man who sweeps the street crossing. He saw beyond the wretched rags the soul and seeing beheld the impress of Immortality. While Mr. Jones made no pretense of his charity and few knew how kindly his manifold acts were, yet can it be said in very truth of him, “For I was hungered, and ye gave me meat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in; Naked and ye clothed me; I was sick and ye visited me; I was in prison and ye visited me. It was the gospel of his life to search out the under dog and be his protector. The life of this community is better because he lived here, and men who survive him will take encouragement from his career and emulate his unselfishness. Frank Jones is happy in his death; he lived so well that men miss him and sorrow after him. It is not the privilege of persons generally that at their death to be widely deplored, but some men and women so widely influence the community by their individual traits of character that a deep void is made when the grave marks the line of demarcation, and this community can at least say of him: His life was gentle and the elements So mixed in him that Nature might stand up And say to all the world this was a man. She was married here May 15, 1879 to Frank Jones, who with his brother, George, opereated the G.W. Jones Lumber company which had offices and yard operations in this city, Appleton and other Wisconsin points. Mr. Jones died in 1901. Jones, was a guest of the West Hotel in Minneapolis Wednesday morning when the structure was afire, but escaped with slight injuries consisting of a broken bone in the toe and cuts in his hands, resulting from contact with a glass when he was making his way from the burning building. In a letter to his mother, Mr. Jones says his injuries are not serious. Mr. Jones, who is traveling for the Jones Lumber Co. of Appleton, occupied a room on the seventh floor of the hotel and at the time of the fire, early in the morning, was dressing, preparatory to leaving his room. He hastily made his way into the hall which was filled with smoke to such an extent that Jones failed to discover a flight of stairs that led from the hall immediately next to his room. A physician who occupied the room adjoining that of Mr. Jones accompanied the Manitowoc boy in his flight to escape from the house and the two climbed down the fire escape together. The two reached the fire escape after some time in which they were unable to locate the escape. That Mr. Jones had a narrow escape is attested by the fact that a woman who occupied a room directly across the hall from him was one of the ten to lose her life in the fire Her escape cut off, bewildered and frightened, the woman leaped from the window of the room to instant death on the pavement below. Mr. Jones says the scene at the fire was one that will remain with him for years. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Fri., Jan. 12, 1906

WALLACE B. JONES DIED: At his residence in this place on the evening of the 11th inst., of typhoid fever, Mr. Wallace B. Jones in the 29th year of his age. -Mr. Jones was born in this town when the place was first settled. He lived here till he was four years of age when his father's family removed to Chicago, from which place they returned in 1854, and Mr. J. was a resident here up to the time of his death. He was a son of Benjamin Jones, our well known fellow citizen and was a member of the firm of A.D. Jones & Brother, lumber manufacturers. He has been identified with the business interests of the place so long that his absence will be widely felt, more especially as he had hosts of warm personal friends. His disposition was mild and quiet, and he was generous to a fault. He was a loving husband and kind father. Few, in any community, were better like. It is but a few days since we saw him engaged in his regular avocations and we did not think but what his chances were for long life and usefulness, but alas, who can tell what the future has in store for us or our friends! The funeral took place yesterday at two o'clock. A Lodge of Free Masons of which the deceased was a member in good standing, attended in a body, and buried their brother according to the rites of the mystic order. The high esteem and respect of our citizens for the deceased was amply shown by the concourse that assembled at the Episcopal Church, to listen to a funeral sermon by Rev. T.B. Dooley, and by the large procession that followed his remains to their last resting place. Mr. Jones leaves a wife and one child. FREDRIK JORGENSEN News article ACCIDENT ON STR. PONTIAC MAY END IN VICTIM'S DEATH Fred Jorgenson(sic) Falls 20 Feet and is Crushed Under Heavy Steel Plate from Boiler of the Boat INJURIES SERIOUS AND AGE OF MAN INJURED CHANCES Fred Jorgenson, aged 62, is at the hospital in critical condition, with chances against his recovery, as the result of injuries which he sustained in an accident aboard the steamer, Pontiac, at the Dry Docks Co. yards late Friday afternoon while engaged in work on that boat. Jorgenson's age and the nature of his injuries give little hope that he can survive. Jorgenson was at work on the Pontiac which is receiving new boilers and was at work on a steel platform which runs above the boiler and which was to be removed. In some unaccountable manner, Jorgenson loosened the platform and was thrown downward, the heavy steel plate falling on top of him. The distance which Jorgenson fell is estimated at twenty feet and the platform struck him squarely as he lay prostrate on the floor. Fellow employes who rushed to the aid of Jorgenson found the man unconscious in the hold, apparently suffering from severe injuries and he was removed to the hospital. Examination developed that Jorgenson had sustained serious internal hurts and that his spine had been injured. His lower jaw is fractured and his head and face is badly cut and battered. Owing to the advanced age of Mr. Jorgenson, there is much apprehension that he will not survive his injuries, chances being against his recovery. Mr. Jorgenson is a rigger and had been employed at the shipyards and on the boats for years. When the work on the Pontiac started, Jorgenson was told to assist in removing the old boilers and was at this work when the accident befell him. Jorgenson is a resident of the north side, his home being at 618 North Fifth Street. He is married and the father of a family. While there is a chance that he may survive his injuries, his condition is such that little hope is held out. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Sat., Nov. 29, 1913 ******** CASE HEARD HERE BY INDUSTRIAL BOARD IS SETTLED, $1260 PAID Insurance Company Pay Widow of Late Fred Jorgensen for Death of Husband who Died Year after Injury at Shipyards Plant Settlement has been made by insurance companies carrying risks of the Manitowoc-Shipbuilding company on the claim for compensation filed by Mrs. F. Jorgensen against the companies for death of her husband, hearing in which was held by the Industrial commission here last week. Mrs. Jorgensen is to receive $1,260 in addition to payments previously made, said to have covered a considerable amount as 65 percent of wages of Mr. Jorgensen while he was disabled. The case presented some rather unusual features, Jorgensen, who was employed by the local shipyards for years, was injured in 1914 by falling from the top of a boiler on which he was at work and suffered injuries that laid him up several months. He recovered however and was able to return to his work (illegible)…was taken ill, his death being due to stomach trouble, it was said. Physicians claimed that the death of Mr. Jorgensen could be traced back to the injuries he had sustained which had made his condition susceptible to the fatal attack and hurried his death. After testimony had been taken at the hearing of the Industrial commission last week, an agreement was made for settlement on the basis of $1260 which was approved by the commission and paid to the family. Mr. Jorgensen was one of the pioneer ship carpenters of the city and had been employed at the local yards for many years. A previous payment of $563 had been made by the company to the family and compensation payments made bring the total to about $3200 for the death of Mr. Jorgensen. It is said Markham and Markham represented Mrs. Jorgensen. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Friday, January 19, 1917 ********* [bur. 07-07-1916/cause: chronic gastritis]

At the outbreak of the Civil War he joined the 14th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment and served 2 yrs. in Company G until he was severely wounded in the hip during the battle of Pittsburg Landing. JOHN JUST TWO SUDDEN DEATHS IN FEW HOURS IN FAMILY Death of Mrs. Just, Jr., Followed By That of Husband’s Father. Tragedy struck over the John Just farm at King’s Bridge yesterday and left two dead in its trail, both deaths being sudden and due to the same cause – heart failure. Within a few hours, John Just, Jr., was called upon to realize the uncertainty of life and futility of human happiness by the death of his wife, Mrs. Clara Just, and his father, John Just, Sr. The two deaths occurred within five hours of each other and it was Mr. Just’s lot to find the cold bodies of each after death had left its imprint. Mrs. Just, Jr., was stricken suddenly yesterday morning while attending to some household duties in the basement at the home, the body being found by the husband when he returned to the house to make inquiry why his wife had not joined him in the milking. A few hours later and while undertakers were caring for the body of Mrs. Just, children who had been sent in search of Mr. Just’s father who had left the house on an errand, found the body of the aged man a short distance from the house, he too having been stricken suddenly. Family Gathering Held Sunday The tragedy came in the wake of a happy celebration of the 35th birthday anniversary of Mrs. Just. Mr. and Mrs. John Just, Sr., parents of Mr. Just, who reside in this city on North Nineteenth Street, attended the anniversary which was in the nature of a family reunion, and the father had decided to remain at King’s Bridge for the week, the mother having returned to this city Sunday. The shock of the death of her husband and daughter-in-law has prostrated Mrs. Just who today is reported seriously ill. Both Deaths Unexpected Both deaths came unexpectedly. Mrs. Just, Jr., was apparently in her usual health Monday and Tuesday morning when she arose and was cheerful and happy about the house. Her failure to join her husband in the milking led him to return to the house to make the terrible discovery. He immediately summoned physicians from Mishicot but Mrs. Just was beyond aid. Mr. Just, Sr., was seated on the porch of the home when he was told of the demise of his daughter-in-law and was visibly affected by the news. He said that he would take a walk out on the farm and when he failed to return for the noonday meal, search was made for him and the body was found lying on the “sward” a short distance from the house. Mr. Just had evidently succumbed to the shock of the earlier tragedy. Mrs. Just Mishicot Girl Mrs. Just, whose untimely death came as a great shock to the family and friends, was a former Mishicot girl, having been Clara Stueck of that village previous to her marriage. She was born in the Town of Gibson July 9, 1888, and was married to Mr. Just twelve years ago. Mrs. Just’s father and the mother both preceded her in death and in similar manner to that of her own, her father having been stricken by heart failure only a few months ago. Besides her husband, she is survived by a little daughter, aged four, and two sisters, Mrs. Norman Wilson of Jumbo Creek, and Mrs. Grover Kadow of Mishicot, and four brothers, John, Louis, Carl and William Stueck, all of Mishicot. Mr. Just, Sr., Pioneer of Co. John Just, Sr., was a pioneer of Manitowoc County and had been a resident of this city for 13 years. He was born in Germany 82 years ago and came to Manitowoc County in young manhood. For forty-five years, he made his home on the farm at King’s Bridge where death overtook him and in 1910, removed with his wife to this city, the couple making their home on North Nineteenth Street and living in retirement. Besides his aged wife, he is survived by two sons, Louis of this city and John, Jr., on the old homestead, and by two daughters, Mrs. Louis Stueck of Mishicot, and Mrs. Meta Krueger of Downers Grove, Ill. Burials at Mishicot and This City The funeral of Mrs. Just, Jr., will be held Thursday afternoon at Mishicot, the funeral party leaving the Just home at King’s Bridge at 1:30 and Rev. Zell of Mishicot officiating at English services.
