JOHN KRAINIK (d. 1923) John Krainik, City Pioneer Passes Away Identified With Old Marine Band as a Charter Member Death came as a messenger of release from suffering to John Krainik, pioneer business man and musician of the county and city, at his home at the corner of North Eighth street and New York avenue at 5 o'clock this morning. Mr. Krainik suffered a stroke of paralysis two months ago that confined him to his bed and his advanced age made the stroke more serious. The funeral will be held saturday afternoon with service at the home at 2 o'clock, John Duran officiating and burial will be at Evergreen. Members of the family have requested the service be private. Charter Member Marine Band Mr. Krainik was eighty-five years old and was born in Bohemia, June 2, 1838. He decided as a young man that he would come to the United States, land of opportunity and located in Manitowoc County to make his new home. Here he was married more than a half century ago and engaged in business at Francis Creek where for many years he conducted a saloon, hotel and store. Some forty years ago he sold out and came to Manitowoc where he engaged in the lumber business on what is now the site of the Soo depot. With his arrival here he became identified with the musical organizations of the city and was a member of the Marine band when it was organized, servicing under its successive leaders until about three years ago when age compelled him to retire from active service. He always took a keen interest in music, attended rehearsals faithfully and was always on hand when the band turned out for private and public occasion. Following the sale of the local lumber yard the Krainik family moved to Plummer, Wis. where Mr. Krainik engaged in the saw mill business but the venture was not the success he had expected and he sold the business to return to this city where for thirty-five years he has made his home in the same building at New York avenue and Eighth streets. Death is Mourned An honest conscientious, home loving man he enjoyed friendship of a wide circle of friends in the city and county and news of the death will bring a feeling of loss to many. They are Fred, who is still in service in the United States Navy and stationed at Oakland, California, Mrs. E.J. Steidl at Crete, Neb., Mrs. Walter Blumenthal, Laramie, Wyoming, Mrs. J.T. Webster, Chicago, and Miss Vlasta at home. One sister, Mrs. Jelinik, of Crete, Neb., also survives him. Pioneer of Herald Family Mr. Krainik was one of the first subscribers for the Daily Herald when it was founded twenty-five years ago and had been a constant reader of the paper during its quarter century of publication and its staunch friend. Even during his last illness he had continued his daily perusal of the paper and had retained an interest in events. Mr. Krainik, although he had never held public office, was always keenly awake to public affairs and was a citizen who apprecated his responsibilities and priviliges (sic), it having been his proud boast that he had never failed to vote in an election. The death of Mr. Krainik will be a loss to all who knew him. The Manitowoc Herald-News, October 25, 1923 ****** [bur 10-29-1923/cause: arterio sclerosis]

VICTOR E. KRAJNEK Victor Krajnek, age 83, passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2023, after a long illness. A life-long Manitowoc resident, Victor was born July 31, 1939, to Edward and Agnes (Kvitek) Krajnek. Vic attended Holy Innocents grade school and graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1957. After high school, Vic enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and had the rare honor of proudly serving President Dwight Eisenhower at Camp David Presidential Retreat, where he received several commendations. After his discharge from the Navy, he began his working career at Imperial Eastman in Manitowoc, then completed his electrical journeyman apprenticeship at Lakeshore Technical College. After that, he worked for various electrical construction contractors and was a member of the IBEW Union 494. He retired from Specht Electric in 2001. By then, he had attained a Wisconsin State Master Electrician license. On July 26, 1969, he married Winifred (Winnie) Zagrodnik at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Manitowoc. They were about to celebrate 54 years of marriage at the time of his passing. Vic and Winnie had 3 children, and as a family they enjoyed their annual trip to Wisconsin Dells, and vacations in Washington, D.C., Disney World, and summer weeks at a cottage on Clark Lake in Door County, where Vic pretended to be a master fisherman, but really preferred to float around in an inner tube or cruise around the lake in the fishing boat. He was also the family grill master, famous for asking if the food is done enough, and telling everyone that he could "put it back on" for a bit. (It was always perfect, and he knew it.) In retirement, he avidly studied the stock market and talked about it to anyone who would listen. He also helped his family and friends with almost any project that arose. However, his pride and joy were his grandchildren, and he followed them wherever their sporting events, music or dance recitals, and school events would lead. Vic is survived by his wife of 54 years, Winifred (Winnie); daughter and son-in-law Kelly and Jeff Kautzer (Green Bay) and their children, Jack and Lauren (special friend, Daniel Fenn); sons and daughter-in-law (both of Manitowoc) David Krajnek and his children Leah, Ian, and Emma; and Andrew and Amanda Krajnek, along with their children Mallory, Emmalyn, Grace, Grant, Lucia, and Anna. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Krajnek of Manitowoc; brother-and sister-in-law, Dr. Lynn and Judy Holder of Manitowoc, and sister-inlaw Betty Adler of Marshfield, WI, as well as other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Agnes Krajnek, in-laws, Albert and Leona Zagrodnik, and an infant grandson, Peter Krajnek. Vic was life-long member of Holy Innocents Catholic Church (now St. Francis of Assisi Parish), and served on its Board of Education, and was also a minister of hospitality. Additionally, he was known for his wit. and always had a good story- especially about a favorite trip to Jamaica with his "cottage friends" before he met Winnie, his time at Camp David, or other shenanigans. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 29, 2023, at St. Francis of Assisi- Grand location, 1416 Grand Ave, Manitowoc, with Rev. Doug Le Captain officiating. Relatives and friends may call at the church from 9:30 am until the time of service at 11:00 am. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery with military honors to take place. The Lakeshore Family Funeral Homes, Pfeffer location is assisting the family. Online condolences may be expressed by visiting www.lakeshorefamilyfuneralhomes.com Memorials may be made to Roncalli Catholic Schools, 2000 Mirro Drive, Manitowoc, WI 54220, or the Alzheimer's Association, 225 North Michigan Ave., FL 17, Chicago, IL 60601-7633. The Krajnek family would like to thank the Sharon S. Richardson Hospice staff, especially Teri, Stephanie, Rachel & Chaplain Joe for all of their care and support, and for leading us through this journey. Also thank you to the Home Instead staff, especially TJ, who made it possible to keep Vic at home longer than would have been possible without them; and thank you to the staff of St. Mary’s Home. We also want to show our appreciation for our very special neighbors: Dwight, Karen, Bob, Anil, Minaxi and Sanjay for supporting us all along the way, as well as all of our friends who offered prayers and support in other ways. We will be forever grateful. Herald Times Reporter, Manitowoc, Wis., July 26, 2023

ANTON AND EMIL KRAJNIK SMALL POX Yes, the disease is here; has been here for fully five weeks, and "we know it not." There have been deaths from this disease, and funerals, but no one dreamed that small pox was the cause. Yesterday when the rumor first started, people were incredulous. The story was so improbable that nobody was inclined to give it credence. It seemed so much like one of those panics of which rumors of small pox are so prolific, that thoughtful people treated it as a bug-bear. We were one of the disbelievers, but feeling that the matter needed investigating, we called upon a brother of the person whose family has the disease and ascertained all the facts. Joseph Krejnik(sic) was a farmer living in Kossuth, about forty rods from the saloon-keeper Ceval, in whose family small pox had broken out some time ago as stated in The Pilot. The nature of the disease at that time was either unknown or if known, concealed. Krejnik moved into the city about six weeks ago. His family were then in good health although it appears they had been unconsciously exposed to infection. Mr. Krejnik settled in the Second ward and a short while after one of his children became sick but recovered. The rest were vaccinated while the small pox virus was in their asylum. Three of them died-one last Thursday and one on Monday of this week. They were buried privately in Evergreen Cemetery but not as reported, in the night. A farmer from the country was hired to bring the bodies to the graveyard. Two more of the children are now sick. All had been vaccinated except the one who recovered. Mr. Krejnik protests that no person has been allowed to enter the house since the disease broke out, and that no occupant of the house has been out since that time. A man has been engaged to do all the necessary work and bring to the house all things that were needful. What impelled them to keep the matter a secret so long it is difficult to say. A neighbor living in the adjoining house knew there was sickness in the family and suspected what it was and work was sent to the marshal yesterday and he made investigations. Placard were printed and the place is now quarantined. The house stands in one of the most populous blocks in the city and it is a matter of surprise that the disease has been kept thus closely limited. There is really not much cause for apprehension. Now that the authorities are apprised of the existence of the plague, it can be kept under control. This saloon in Kossuth has proved the nucleus for a number of cases throughout the county. A dance was given about two weeks ago at a saloon near the infected one, and it is said the infection is spreading. Manitowoc Pilot, Wis., Thursday, February 16, 1899 pg. 3 ******** Death late Tues. of Joseph Krainik after a 4-mo. confinement with a lung illness. He was born 25 Jan. 1845 in Bohemia and came to America with his parents while he was still a child. He has lived in our city since he was 18 yrs. old. He leaves a widow and 8 children. His funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon. Der Nord Westen, 16 Feb. 1899 ******* LIFE'S JOURNEY O'ER. Death Summons Came to Joseph Krainik Last Night. LEAVES A LARGE FAMILY. Born In Bohemia in 1845 and Came to Manitowoc County in 1857. Joseph Krainik died at his home, corner Main and Chicago streets, last night. He has been ill about four months and suffered from lung trouble. For three months he has been confined to his bed, and although it has been known for some time that he could not survive, his death was unexpected. The deceased had been a resident of this city for eighteen years and was well and favorably known. Joseph Krainik was born in Bohemia, January 25, 1845, his parents being natives of the same country. In company with his parents he emigrated to America in January 1857 and they settled on a farm in the town of Kossuth, this county. His early advantages were limited and life was a struggle for an existence. At the age of 13 he was obliged to assist in the support of the family and worked for fifteen (15) cents a day to keep the wolf from the door. He was industrious and never complained. At times the struggle was very hard but he persevered and now leaves his family in comfortable circumstances. In February 1868 he was united in marriage to Miss Lizzia Hlava, of Kossuth, and they settled upon a farm of their own. Fifteen children were born to them, eight of whom, with his wife, survive him. In 1881 they removed to this city and shortly after locating here the family was afflicted with small pox. Three children died from the disease and Mr. and Mrs. Krainik and one child were the only ones of the large family, who escaped the plague. Since that time little of the eventful has characterized the life of the decedent, and he has been fairly prosperous. The children who survive him are Joseph, of Milwaukee, Mary, Anna, Emma, Rosa, Vlasta, Libbie and Julia, of this city. Three brothers and two sisters also survive him. They are Anton Krainik, of Lodi, Wenzel and Stephen, of this city, and Mrs. Barta and Mrs. Spivacek, of this city. Deceased was a member of Bohemia lodge, No. 182, C.S.P.S., and of the Slovanski Lipa and Sokol. He was a man respected by all who knew him and was a quiet retiring disposition. The funeral will be held from the late residence at 2 o'clock Friday and will be in charge of the C.S.P.S. society. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Wednesday, February 15, 1899 P.1 ******* CONSIGNED TO EARTH. Funeral Services Over Remains of Late Joseph Krainik Held To-day. The funeral of the late Joseph Krainik was held from the late family residence, corner of Chicago and Main streets, at 2 o'clock this afternoon, and was in charge of Bohemia lodge C.S.P.S. A large number of friends assembed to pay tribute to the memory of the departed and the floral tributes were numerous and beautiful. A long funeral cortege followed the remains to their last resting place in Evergreen cemetery and short services were held at the grave. We desire to express our sincere and heartfelt thanks to those who so kindly assisted us in our recent bereavement, especially to those whose ministrations and sympathy brightened the last hours of our dear father, and to the members of C.S.P.S., lodge No. 260, for their assistance at the funeral. JULIA M. KRATZ DEATH ENDS SUFFERING OF MRS. J. Kratz, November 24, 1880 and for many years the family resided at Muskegon, Mich., where Mr. Kratz was chief of the city fire department. Later, about 37 years ago, the family removed to Menominee, Mich., where Mr. Kratz held a similar position for fifteen years and they then came to this city upon his election as chief of the local department. During her residence here and up to the time of her illness, Mrs. Kratz was active in social and church circles, being a member of the local chapter of the Eastern Star, the King's Daughters, and of the Ladies society of the Presbyterian church.
