DANIEL KRUMDICK FIRST COUNTY WHITE CHILD WEDDED 50 YR'S Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Krumdick Have Golden Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Krumdick, 624 Jay street, pioneer and respected residents of the city and county, are today holding open house in celebration of the golden anniversary of their wedding. With the son John and daughter Mrs. Charles A. Groffman and the five grandchildren of the family present the couple are receiving congratulations from a host of friends who are calling to pay their respects to the couple who are both hale and hearty and in enjoyment of health which gives promise that they will live to celebrate their wedding anniversary for many years to come. Mrs. Krumdick, the bride of fity years ago was born in Prague, Germany and came to the United States with her parents when but a child. The big Chicago fire was responsible for her coming to Manitowoc, she losing all of her clothes and being compelled to flee for her life. Previous to her marriage she was Miss Havlinek. The bridegroom of fifty years was born in the Town of Kossuth, the first white child to be born in the township and next July will celebrate his seventy-fifth birth anniversary, having waited until he was nearly twenty-five years old before getting married. Too Young To Go To War At the time of the Civil War Mr. Krumdick begged to be taken along when his three brothers and Henry Schmidt left for the front but the recruiting officer refused his request. He was too young. Only one of the three brothers returned, the others falling in battle. January 10, 1872 Justice of the Peace James McCarthy pronounced the words which united the Miss Havlinek and Daniel Krumdick in marriage and the pair proceeded to make a home out of the wilderness near Rockwell. Thirty-three years ago they came to the city and have alweays (sic) since made their home at 624 Jay street where the celebration is being held today. Beside the two children present today, only one other child was born to the couple, a son who died in infancy. KRUMDICK First White Child Born in Kossuth Dies at Age of 79 Death claimed Daniel Krumdick, one of the oldest residents of the city and the first white child born in Kossuth, at his home 624 Jay street shortly before midnight last night, his demise being the result of a stroke which he suffered a week ago and which his advanced age made it imposible to rally from. Mr. Krumdick was stricken Thursday October 7 in the yard at his home while he was caring for his chickens and although he rallied, his fight to live was a losing one. The end came peacefully. Mr. Krumdick, who was born in Kossuth July 28, seventy-nine years ago when the section was a wilderness, had made his home in this city for forty years, during 38 of which he had been employed with the Henry Esch Sons Co., retiring because of his advancing age. He was an ardent lover of flowers and gardening and his chief interest in life was his home. Mr. and Mrs. Krumdick celebrated their golden wedding anniversary four years ago and the life of the couple had been ideal. Mrs. Krumdick, with two of three children born to the couple, survives, the children being Mrs. Charles A. Groffman and John Krumdick, both of this city. There are five grandchildren and two great grandchildren also surviving. Died as He Lived-At Peace Mr. Krumdick was well and favorably known in the city and throughout the county, having come in contact with the public in his association with the Esch Sons Co., and he was universally esteemed. PETER KRUMEL DEATH CALIMS PIONEER BLACKSMITH OF CITY Peter Krumel, pioneer backsmith and wagon maker of the city, passed away at the Holy Family hospital Saturday night after but a few days at the institution. Pneumonia, which a weakened system was unable to combat, was the immediate cause of death. A native of Manitowoc county, born at Kossuth in 1872. CHARLES KRUMM (d. 1899) MEETS SUDDEN DEATH. Chas. Krumm Instantly Killed By a Fall From His Wagon. ACCIDENT AT FRANCIS CREEK. He was Returning From a Trip to Kellnersville. Was Well Known and Much Respected. Leaves a Wife and Three Children. The startling news reached this city at ten o'clock last night, that Chas. Krumm, Sr., the well known drayman of this city, had fallen from his wagon when near Francis Creek and had been instantly killed. Mr. Krumm was a most careful and industrious follower of his business and was much sought after by those having heavy hauling or work that required much care, consequently he almost controlled the business of moving pianos, organs and things of that nature. Yesterday morning he left here with a pinao for a person living at Kellnersville, fourteen miles from the city. He was in perfect health and was strong and vigorous, being still in the prime of life. To-day he was brought home, cold and still in death. He reached Kellnersville in safety after a long slow journey over the rough roads, disposed of his freight and started home. No one would have believed otherwise than that he would arrived in due time, well and strong and healthful as he was when he started out in the morning. His journey last night, however, as well as his journey in life terminated as suddenly as it was unexpected. He had traveled about four miles on his homeward way and had just passed Francis Creek when the accident occurred. His long ride through the cold must have made him numb and stiff. It is supposed that he leaned over to draw the robe more closely around him, and at the moment the wheel struck something that caused the wagon to give a lurch, and that he lost his balance and fell. The terrible accident happened about 6:30 o'clock and he was found a few minutes later cold and stiff in death. His skull was crushed and the probability is that when he fell from his high seat his head struck the hard frozen earth; or it may be that his horse kicked him after he fell. At any rate death must have come quickly and without a moment's warning. Thus again is the uncertainty of life demonstrated in startling manner that should cause the most careless and indifferent a moment's solemn thought. Mr. Chas. Krumm was rapidly nearing the half century mark of his earthly existence having been born Aug. 1, 1849. He was a native Germany but came to this country when a mere child. In 1874 he was married to Miss Henrietta Mueller. Besides his wife, three children survive him. They are Chas. Krumm Jr., a well known salesman in A.C. Schreiter's store: George Krumm a plumber in Chicago and Lilly Krumm who is till attending the Third Ward School. The awefull suddenness of the news was a fearful shock to the family, and the little group that was yesterday peaceful and happy is to-day (sic) bowed down with grief. One of the well known characteristics of the deceased was his devotion to his home and his pride in his family. No place had greater attractions for him than his own hearthstone and there he spent most of his spare time. He was a steady, honest, industrious man and held the respect of all who knew him. He was insured in the Royal Areanum and the Third Ward Insurance Co. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon from the home at the corner of Eleventh and Hamilton streets. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Manitowoc, Wis. Wednesday, January 18, 1899 P. 1 ******** On Tues. afternoon Chas. Krumm, the well-known wagoner, took a piano to Kellnersville. He spent some time there and started home about 6:30. Shortly afterward his horse and wagon were going along in Francis Creek but the driver was missing. Mr. Krumm was then found lying dead in the street with a fractured skull. Nobody knows what sort of accident took place and probably never will know. For whatever reason he had fallen from the wagon and hit his head on a rock. He leaves a widow and 3 grown children as well as a wide range of acquaintances. The funeral will take place Fri. afternoon at the city cemetery. Der Nord Westen, 19 Jan. 1899 ******* Wm. Krumm, of Kaukauna, is in the city to attend the funeral of his brother Chas. Krumm. KATHLEEN L. KRUPKAT SPACEK Kathleen L. Spacek Kathleen Louise (Krupkat) Spacek, a most extraordinary woman, died Tuesday, April 14, 2009, after a tragic accident. Her two younger brothers, Donald and Dean Krupkat sadly preceded her in death. Kathleen was born April 2, 1919, in Manitowoc, WI, the daughter of Kurt J. and Minnie (Bingham) Krupkat. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1937, and worked for many years as a stenographer and legal secretary before taking on the accounting duties for the family business, Krupkat Heating. Her interests ranged from every kind of sports to theatre, but her two lifelong passions were music and reading. Being involved in the Manitowoc community was very important to her, and she was a member and past president of The Masquers Inc., Republican Women, and Business and Professional Women. She also worked with the Manitowoc Heart Fund, Community Concerts, Friends of the Library and was a member and former deacon at the First Presbyterian Church. Kathleen was a long time supporter of the Rahr-West Art Museum, where she and her daughter (private) participated in the table-setting displays for ten years, and she also delighted in reading to first graders at Madison Elementary School for many years. Two of the proudest moments of Kathleen's life occurred very recently. The first, when she witnessed the election of President Barack Obama; the second when she celebrated her 90th birthday in grand style with family and friends. Kathleen was married to Eugene C. Spacek, Manitowoc, and is the beloved mother and mother-in-law of (private), Wauwatosa, and (private), Jacksonville, FL. (Survivors omitted for privacy) As a favorite author of Kathleen's wrote, "The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other's life. Rarely do members of one family grow up under the same roof." A Memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday April 25, 2009, at the Pfeffer Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Manitowoc. The family will greet friends and relatives at the Pfeffer Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Lakeshore Humane Society, the American Cancer Association, or to the Manitowoc Library. Kathleen's family would like to express special thanks to Drs. (private) and the wonderful staff at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center for their extraordinary care and compassion. Kathleen was a true steel magnolia, always able to get through hard times but as gentle and delicate as the flower. She always kept her wonder and awe of life, and never failed to see the beauty around her; in Lake Michigan, a spectacular sunset, or just the white clouds on a blue sky. She touched many, many, people in her life and will be deeply missed. Herald Times Reporter, April 22, 2009

JOSEPH KUBICHEK KILLED WHEN CAR TOPPLES ON HIS CHEST Joseph Kubichek Victim of Accident When Auto Falls From Jacks Joseph Kubichek, 31, iron worker, was crushed to death early Saturday evening in the garage at the rear of his home, 1411 Franklin street, when a small car under which he was at work toppled off the jacks and pinned him to the garage floor. Kubichek was dead when found by his mother-in-law, Mrs. Anna Hynek, as she went to look for him when she got no response to calls from the house. Mrs. Kubichek was downtown shopping at the time and did not reach home for more than an hour after the tragedy. Falls On His Chest The man had gone to the garage in mid afternoon to make some repairs to his small car. He jacked..(line underinked)..one of the jacks under the axle housing and removed both rear wheels. From the position of the body it is believed that he crawled under the rear of the car to make some adjustments with a wrench. These operations probably moved the car off the jacks and it fell on his chest, crushing out his life. When Mrs. Hynek opened the garage door shortly before 4:45 p.m., she saw her son- in-law under the car and called her father, Jacob Naidl, Whitelaw, visiting at the Kubichek home. He in turn summoned police. Officers Darhant and Smrz reached the garage and with the assistance of others the car was raised and the body pulled from beneath the rear axle. Dr. George Hoffman, who was called, said Kubichek had been almost instantly killed. Dr. Gerald Rau, county coroner, said there will be no inquest. Born at Mishicot The deceased was born at Mishicot Sept. 10, 1904 and came to this city 12 years ago. He was employed for many years at the shipyards and in recent months had been employed at the Manitowoc Boiler Works. In 1927 he was married to Olive Hynek of this city. Survivors are his widow; three small daughters, Gladys, 7, Geraldine, 4, and Joanne, 2; a sister, Mrs. Fred Petska, Bolt, Wis.; five brothers, Jacob, city, Frank, Rice Lake, Anton, Whitelaw, Charles, Kewaunee, Louis, Two Creeks. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m., from the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home in charge of the Rev. C. H. Phipps. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. The body is at the funeral home and may be viewed there until the hour of the funeral tomorrow. Manitowoc Herald Times, December 30, 1935 P. 2 ******** [cause: crushed beneath rear end of car]

The nurse, Audrey Davis of 823 North 10th street, towed Mrs. Kuchera from mid- stream, back to the south bank, about 100 feet from the Kuchera home, where the woman’s husband pulled her, unconscious, from the water onto a small dock. Clarence Baryenbruck, a deputy sheriff, arrived a few minutes later but the woman was already breathing easier, although she had swallowed a large quantity of water, according to Coroner Theodore Teitgen. Mrs. Kuchera was taken to Holy Family hospital by ambulance where her condition is not regarded as serious. Kuchera arrived home about 8:45 a.m. after a shopping trip and discovered his wife was missing. He had left her asleep in bed some minutes previously to buy some things at the store. A path leads from the house down a wooded slope directly to the river. Following this path Kuchera arrived at the stream’s edge in time to meet Miss Davis and pull his wife from the water. The nurse had been swimming on the north side of the river when she noticed a person struggling near mid-stream. The river at that point is about 180 feet wide. She swam to the drowning woman and towed her the rest of the distance to the south bank. Manitowoc Herald Times, June 28, 1947 P. 1 ******** Rescue in River Made by Mrs. Nowakowski Mrs. R. F. Nowakowski of Manitowoc Rapids rural route, a former nurse at Holy Family hospital was the young woman who towed Mrs. John Kuchera to shore in the Manitowoc river above the dam Saturday morning. The Herald-Times had previously reported the rescuer was Miss Audrey Davis a student nurse. Persons who know both women have said both have red hair and bear a close resemblance to each other, which confused the Herald-Times informant. Mrs. Nowakowski swam some distance across and down the river to reach the victim before towing her to shore. Mrs. Kuchera died at Holy Family hospital yesterday.
