Kunz, 37, formerly of Manitowoc, Wis., a film studio guard here, may have driven his automobile around the city with his dead wife sitting beside him as a passenger, according to police here. They’ll never know positively, however, for Kunz took that secret with him to his death. He committed suicide, officers said. He ended his life at the home of friends in nearby Venice, police said. Police, after finding suicide notes on Kunz’s body, indicating domestic troubles, located the automobile containing the body of the dead man’s wife, Dorothy Anderson Kunz, 33, apparently, a murder victim. A coroner’s report indicates that Mrs. Kunz had been dead 24 hours. A friend told officers that Kunz came to his apartment Friday and said that he had murdered Mrs. Kunz. Later, however, the studio guard denied that story. One of the suicide notes requested that both bodies be cremated and the ashes scattered over the Pacific ocean. Madson Seed Co. In 1917 Mr. Kunz purchased the motorcycle business of the late Joseph Peterik and conducted it until he enlisted in the service in June 1918. He was attached to the motorcycle convoy, with headquarters in Paris, having been sent overseas soon after his enlistment and remained there until June of this year, returning here about June 20, when he re- engaged in his business and reopened the shop on Buffalo street. Mr. Kunz was an enthusiastic motorcyclist and enjoyed nothing more than driving his car and availed himself of every opportunity to be out. He was taking a drive into the country with a friend at the time of the tragedy and had reached the Muth Hill on the Shoto road when the accident occurred. Details of this accident have already been published. Besides his parents Mr. Kunz is survived by three brothers, Lester Kunz, who is a salesman for the Madson Seed Co., and who is at present in Minnesota, Franklin and Paul at home. Efforts are being made to get into touch with Lester Kunz to advise him of his brother's death and the funeral arrangements will be deferred until he is heard from. Mr. Kunz was a young man of brilliant future, possessing the qualifi- cations of the successful business man and character and industry to succeed. His untimely death is deeply developed and has cast a pall over the city and brings keen sorrow to a host of friends. The unfortunate circumstances surrounding the accident, the snuffing out of life of a young man a few seconds before in robust health, accentuate the tragedy. Manitowoc Herald News, Tuesday, October 14, 1919 P.1 ******** There are two more articles about this accident on the same page, i.e. "BRADY HAS ORDERED AN INQUEST HELD"; and "POOR LIGHTS ON KUNZ MOTORCYCLE MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSE OF ACCIDENT BELIEF IF SPEVACEK"/Spevacek was driving the car that collided with the motorcycle. While serving overseas Mr. Kunz was with the mechanical department of the ambulance service and received a number of promotions. His brother, Capt. JOHN J. KUSTKA TOOK OWN LIFE TO END SUFFERINGS John Kustka, Fifth Ward Resident, Despondent, Becomes a Suicide. HANGS TO RAFTER IN CELLAR. Dead Body Found by Wife at Midnight-Was Button Maker by Trade-Had Been Ill Long Times Despodency over continued ill health, which had probably unbalanced his mind, prompted the suicide of John Kustka, a resident of the Fifth ward who was found hanging from a rafter in the cellar of the home at one o'clock this morning by his wife who, becoming alarmed at his nonappearance had instituted search only to be greeted by the ghastly find when she entered the basement of the house. Assistance was immediately summoned and the body was cut down, but life was extinct and nothing could be done. A coroner's inquest was summoned and adjourned until later when a verdict in accordance with the facts, that the deceased came to his death by his own hand was returned. Kustka gave no intimation of his intention to suicide although the circumstances seem to indicate that the act was premediated. The family was at home during the evening and prepared to retire early. Kustka left the room, advising his wife not to wait for him, and immediately, it is presumed, proceeded to the cellar where he carried out his rash deed. A nail had been drven into the rafter and to this a rope was attached, one end being in a noose about the neck of the dead man. There was nothing to indicte a struggle or that Kustka had repented of his determination. The dead man was 41 years of age and had resided here for a number of years. He was employed at his trade, that of a button maker, until forced by ill health to abandon it. Since that time he had been incapicated. He was a native of Bohemia and was a man well thought of by his friends and associates. A wife and four children survive to mourn his death, the family being in poor circumstances. No arrangements have been made for the funeral but it will likely be held Monday. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Saturday, April 2, 1904 P. 1 ******* John Kutska(sic), a resident of the 5th Ward, brought his life to an end Fri. evening by hanging himself in the cellar of his residence. He had come here from Bohemia several years ago and was a button maker by profession, but over the past few years has worked the glue boiler in the school furniture factory. He contracted consumption and had to give up his work several weeks ago because of increasing weakness. He and his wife and 4 small children were hard hit by these circumstances and led him to suicide. Fri. evening after the children had gone to bed, Mrs. Kutska remained up with her ill husband but finally went to bed on his promise he would soon follow. Instead he went to the cellar and hanged himself from a rafter. Mrs. Kutska awakened at 2 o'clock Sat. morning, realized her husband was not in bed and went looking for him. She lit the cellar and found her husband's body. Neighbors were notified, the body taken down and a doctor called, and it was established that life had gone. Justice of the Peace Falge held a coroner's inquest, and the jury returned a verdict of suicide. Kutska was about 43 yrs. old. JAMES L. KYLE James L. Kyle (attorney) died, brother of D.W. Kyle. Manitowoc Herald, 24 Jun 1854 ********* In this Village, on Monday last, after a painful illness of five weeks, Hon. James L. Kyle, aged 29. Our village has been covered with a gloomy pall of funeral sadness by the announcement of the death of one of our most esteemed and distinguished fellow citizens. The insatiate hand of Death has taken from our midst one whose noble, generous and endearing qualities, won for him the respect and esteem of all. Possessed of honorable principles and sterling integrity combined with talents of the highest order the urbanity of his manners, cheerful and ever bouyant spirits ever made him a welcome addition to his circle of associates, most of whom mourn the loss of a sincere and kind-hearted friend. Generous to a fault his principal delight seemed to consist in securing the happiness of others, and if he was quick to resent a supposed injury, none was more ready to acknowledge an unintentional wrong to others or to appreciate a friendly act of courtesy and many of this village can attest to the ready sympathy with the woes of others, which led him to devote many a weary hour at the side of the sick couch, where his efforts to relieve distress was unceasing. If he had faults the grave will cover them but his noble qualities will endure when the marble tablet shall have changed to dust. Mr. Kyle was identified with the early history of Manitowoc, has filled some important offices here, represented the county in the Legislature at its last session and was District Attorney at the time of his death. In the legal profession, he had few equals and he was a universal favorite with other members of the Bar. It will doubtless be gratifying to his relatives abroad to know that he received these attentions from all which his case demanded and foremost among them were the members of the I.O. Of O.F., in which Order ? was P.G. Death's hand administered to his comfort, and when all was over, prepared the winding sheet and laid in the silent tomb all that was left of a man and a brother. The impressive burial service of the Protestant Episcopal Church was read by Rev. Geo. Thompson, Rector of St. James Parish, who also performed the services prescribed by the Regulations of the Order. No weeping relatives were there to shed their tears upon his coffin lid, but the darkness of sorrowing gloom rested upon the countenances of those who had listened with rapt attention to the eloquent tones of his voice when presiding over the mystic rites or swelling in debates and the hearing of more than one manly bosom attested the sincerity of grief for the loss of one who was ever foremost in illustrating by his deeds the pure principles of Odd Fellows. Manitowoc Tribune, June 24, 1854 page 2 ********* DIED- In this village on Monday, the 19th inst., James L. Kyle, aged 29 years. The above notice announcing the decease of a valued citizen, will convey the intelligence of a sad, severe loss to our county and be the herald of heavy tidings wherever he was known. Mr. Kyle was born in North Carolina and his education was completed at Freeport, Illinois, where he studied law with his brother-in-law, John A. Clark, Esq. About six years ago and not very long after his law studies were completed, he came to this place, where he practiced in his profession with great success until his death. To fill the vacancy occasioned by the death of J.H.W. Colby, one year and a half ago, he was appointed District Attorney for the County of Manitowoc and last fall he was run as the popular candidate for the State Legislature and elected and whether acting in a public or professional capacity, he discharged his duty with the strictest fidelity and always with signal ability. As a lawyer he possessed the qualities of an able and eloquent advocate and a sound judicious counsellor. As a gentleman, his manners were polished and winning and his disposition aimable and kind. To speak of all the merits which cluster to ?? his memory, would but aggravate a common sorrow. - a sorrow which, in this wise dispensation of Providence, is felt by hearts to whom he was bound by the endearing relationship of son and brother. Upon them the blow must fall with peculiar weight, for the ties which existed were proof even against the cold dissevering hand of death. But it will send a thrill of comfort to their mourning hearts and mitigate in some degree, we trust, their deeper, holier grief, to know that he was faithfully attended to the last and that the approach of that peaceful sleep which knows no waking was watched by tearful eyes.
