A half hour before zero hour he remembered that he had no license. The legal notice had been duly given but the all important document itself had been overlooked. He got to town in his flivver faster than he will ever travel again and found the court house a dark, bleak heatless pile of stone. Time never went so fast. What to do? He enlisted Sheriff Schuette who hurried him to the home of the County Clerk who was found to be out of town. They doubled back and reached the home of the deputy clerk, Miss Edna Strodhof, just as she was leaving to go to a movie show and the day was saved. PAUL LIERMANN P. LIERMAN, 39, FATALLY HURT WHILE HAYING Valders Farmer Loses His Life When He Attempts To Stop Runaway Team Thursday Attempting to stop a team of runaway horses, hauling a load of hay through a field, and beyond the control of his wife, proved fatal late Thursday afternoon to Paul Lierman, 39, prominent town of Liberty farmer, on his farm, a mile north of the village of Valders. He was crushed under the horses hoofs and the wheels of the wagon and died before the arrival of a physician. Mr. and Mrs. Lierman were alone in the field at the time of the accident. They had completed the loading of the rig and Mrs. Lierman had started to drive the team toward the barn. Suddenly the horses took fright and started to run away. Mr. Lierman, seeing the plight of his wife, ran forward to cut off the runaway team. In his attempt to grab the bridles of the horses, however, Lierman missed his hold and fell beneath the horse's hoffs and the wheelsof the load. Dies Before Physician Arrives When Mrs. Lierman was able to bring the team to a stop she hastened to the side of her husband and found him fatally injured. His chest was crushed and one of his lungs punctured. A neighbor who happened along telephoned to Valders and Dr. W.A. Rauch responded at once. When he arrived Mr. Lierman had breathed his last. The remains were removed to the Berge undertaking parlors at Valders. There will be no inquest. Had Model Farm The deceased only a few months ago had completed the erection of a new farm home and remodeled all his barns. His ninety acre farm was one of the most modern and up-to-date in the county. Besides his widow he is survived by one son (private), a step-mother, Mrs. Marie Lierman at Milwaukee, a step-sister Anna and two step-brothers, Norbert and Gordon, all at Milwaukee. Funeral services will be held from the Lierman home, a mile north of Valders on Monday afternoon. ROBERT W. LILL Following a 10-day illness Robert W. Lill, 80, (photo) lifelong resident of Manitowoc and retired cigar manufacturer and dealer died early today at the Holy Family hospital. He was moved to the hospital from the home, 436 North Sixth street, when his condition became serious. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Frazier mortuary chapel, the Rev. C.H. Phipps of the First Presbyterian church officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Mr. Lill, active in business here and in this vicinity for more than 50 years, had lived a retired life the past 15 years. He was born in this city in 1861, his father having been street commissioner here for many years when Manitowoc was a small community. After he finished school he learned the cigarmaker's trade in a south side shop and a few years later opened his own shop on south Tenth street. A short time late he moved to Washington street. Mr. Lill then erected his own store and established a factory at South Eighth and Quay streets, at the present site of the Commerce block. He traveled through Manitowoc and adjoining counties for many years disposing of the products of his cigar factory. He married Miss Mary Kulnick of this city in 1887 and the couple observed their golden wedding in 1937. Mrs. Lill died a few months later. Mr. Lill was a charter member of the Manitowoc lodge of Elks and during his active life held membership in the Royal League and the United Commercial Travelers. Manitowoc Herald Times, Tuesday, July 1, 1941 P.17 ******** Robert Lill is Shot in Neck Practical Joker at Reedsville Fires Pistol at Local Man at Close Range With the back of his neck perforated with small holes and black with powder grains, Robert Lill, the cigar manufacturer is nursing an injury that may prove serious, the circumstances being due to practical joker at Reedsville. Lill, who was at Reedsville in the interest of his business had occasion to stop at the Bloedorn Blacksmith shop where the son of the proprietor was firing off blank cartridges in a revolver. Lill demonstrated with the boy telling him of the danger connected with the sport and the father coincided with the views and took the pistol away from the lad. A moment later the local man felt a stinging sensation at the back of his neck instantaneous with a report of the pistol and found that for some unaccountable reason, Bloedern Sr., had fired the blank as a joke. The services of a physician were required to stop the flow of blood and to disinfect the wound and for a time the matter was serious. Even now, the danger of tetanus is not over, this development being possible any time within two weeks. Lill has consulted an attorney and may prosecute though Bloedorn professes to have fired the pistol merely as a joke and on impulse without thinking about what the result might be. Some of the powder grains have been removed but the discoloration covers most of the back of the local man's neck. ALVIN LINDSTEDT (Saturday dateline) A terrible accident on the local street railway took a man’s life last evening. Shortly after 7 p.m. a heavily crowded car of the railway arrived here from Two Rivers. Among the passengers was Alvin Lindstedt, well-known insurance agent. As the car reached the corner of Buffalo and 8th Streets, but had not yet reached a full stop, Mr. Lindstedt jumped from the moving car and fell under the wheel. Both legs were terribly mutilated. The wounded man was promptly taken to the hospital by ambulance and doctors summoned. Despite the medical attention the unfortunate man died at 1 a.m. Alvin Lindstedt was 26 yrs. old and had just been married a few years ago. He leaves a widow and 2 children. He had spent the afternoon in this city and left for home on the 6:20 car which was crowded as usual on reaching Buffalo street, the street on which he resides. He leaped from the front platform before the car came to a stop and in doing so his overcoat caught on some projection and threw him or he slipped on the pavement and fell, in such a way that the hind wheels of the car ran over both of his legs, severing them completely. After much delay he was taken to the Holy Family Hospital and his wounds were cared for by Drs. Pritchard and Roberts. But he never rallied from the shock and died a few hours later. Alvin Linstedt was born at Mishicot and was the son of the late Julius Linstedt of that village. After the death of his father, he came here with his mother and for a few years this city was his home. But for the past ten or twelve years he has resided in Manitowoc. JULIUS LINDSTEDT As we go to press we hear of the death of Jule Linsted of Mishicott. The Lakeshore Times, Mar. 4, 1884 ******* Julius Lindstedt of Mishicott died on Monday of this week after a protracted and very painful illness. There is not a person in the county who knew Julius Lindstedt to whom this announcement will not bring sorrow. He was a man of the most sterling integrity, always having the courage of his convictions, and never shirking a public duty. In every matter he was always on the side of decency and never a passive observer as the positive nature of his character would not allow inaction when duty dictated otherwise. No man in the county enjoyed a larger share of public esteem. It was a tribute to his fearlessness, his sincerity and is energy. He was popular although the art of flattery was unknown to him; he was a leader because he had the qualities people admire; and he was a man who interested himself in public affairs without being a politician. For many years he represented Mishicott on the county board and was twice chairman of that body. He was an old resident of the county and at the time of his death was 49 years old. Manitowoc Pilot Thursday, May 8, 1884 ******** The funeral of Jule Lindstedt was perhaps, the largest ever seen in this county. There must have been fully 2000 people present. A large number of people from this city were in attendance. Manitowoc Pilot Thursday, May 15, 1884 ******** Death of Julius Linstedt on Mon., 05 May, in Mishicott. Mr. Linstedt formerly lived in Two Rivers, then lived for a while in Manitowoc where he established a planing mill with Eduard and Carl Zander. After leaving that business, he went to Mishicott to establish a brewery. He was elected Supervisor of Mishicott and served the town for a long time on the County Board. The burial took place today. JULIUS LINDSTEDT (d.1932) Funeral Services on Wednesday From Home For Julius Lindstedt Until His Retirement Nine Years Ago He Was a Community Leader Funeral services for the late Julius Lindstedt, a resident of this city since 1892, who died at the home, 863 North Tenth street Monday afternoon, will be held from the home on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The services will be in charge of the Rev. W. F. Hood of the St. James Episcopal church and interment will be at Evergreen cemetery. While not unexpected, the death of Mr. Lindstedt was a shock to his host of friends in the city and county, who came to known him through the years for his numerous activities and his interest in public and private enterprises. Founder of the Lindstedt-Hoffman Company of this city, the Manitowoc County Abstract company, register of deeds for three terms, former secretary of the county fair, one of the organizers of the Manitowoc Gas company, and head of land holding companies in northern Michigan, Mr. Lindstedt pursued an active life until he retired nine years ago. Born in Two Rivers. The deceased was born in the city of Two Rivers on February 23 1865, and spent his early life there, being educated in the public schools of that city. After reaching his majority he took an active interest in county politics and in 1892 was elected register of deeds on the democratic ticket. That same year he moved to this city to reside. He was renamed for two more terms and in the 1896 campaign was the only democratic county candidate successful at the polls. That same year Mr. Lindstedt was a delegate to the democratic national convention that nominated William Jennings Bryan for the presidency. After retiring from county office, Mr. Lindstedt organized the Manitowoc County Abstract company, the first of its kind in the county, which is still in existence and in which company the deceased maintained an interest up to his death. In 1898 he formed the Julius Lindstedt company, which engaged in the investment, general insurance, real estate and foreign travel fields. With him in this field was Frank Hoffman and in 1903 the Lindstedt company was incorporated and in 1917 it became the Lindstedt-Hoffman company. Gas Co. Organizer Back in 1900 the need of a gas company in Manitowoc became uppermost in the minds of several public spirited citizens and he with M. H. Dempsey, Emil Teitgen, Henry Vits, and John Nagle organized the Manitowoc Gas company. The corporation was ____, Mr. Lindstedt serving as the first secretary and manager of the company. A plant was erected on Chicago street, the city’s streets piped for gas and the local company continued to operate it until it was taken over by the Douglas interests ten years later. In 1906 Mr. Lindsted, together with Dr. A. D. Fraser and others organized the Ontonagon Valley Land company, and he served as president of the company for a number of years. Timber and farm lands were developed in the northern peninsula of Michigan. He was also prominent in the proceedings of the Manitowoc Realty board, of which he was an organizer. Loved Blooded Stock. Mr. Lindstedt himself took an active interest in matters agricultural and in the promotion and advancement of blooded live stock. This interest threw him into support of the county fair and in the earlier days of that institution the deceased served as secretary of the fair for two terms. He was annually a visitor at the Chicago stock show. After the world war, when the government had no further use for the 100 homes erected by the Emergency Fleet Corporation in the Riverview addition, west of the hospital, for use of shipyard workers, Mr. Lindstedt organized the Manitowoc Realty company, to take over these properties. The company arranged to take over these homes and sites from the government, and disposed of them during a period of years following 1920. In that connection he also organized the Riverview Bus line, which served as a “feeder” for the Traction lines, in providing transportation to that section west of the hospital, which the car line did not reach. Later this bus line was taken over by the Wisconsin Public Service corporation. Mr. Lindstead was a great lover of the outdoors and established a beautiful summer home at Lac Vieux Desert, in northern Wisconsin, where he spent most of his summers in later years with his family. Retired in 1924 In January 1924, Mr. Lindsteadt retired from active participation in the affairs of the Lindstedt-Hoffman company and since then had been living a retired life, spending much of his time in travel. Fraternally, Mr. Lindstedt was a member of the Masonic order being in the 1905 consistory class and a Thirty-second degree Mason, also a member of the Manitowoc lodge of Elks and the Lakeside Country club. He was married September 26, 1889 to Miss Ophie Levenhagen, and she survives with two daughters, Miss Blanche at home, and Mrs. Edward Paulus of Cudahy, Wis., one brother, Otto of Milwaukee, and two sisters, Mrs. Albert Simonds of Two Rivers and Mrs. J. W. Frankel of New York City. The remains were removed to the home on North Tenth street this afternoon from the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home and may be viewed there up to the hour of the funeral. Manitowoc Herald Times, December 20, 1932 P. 2 ******** Another of the city’s group of earlier day business men has gone with the passing of Julius Lindstedt, who, though only in his late sixties, was identified with much of the life of Manitowoc through real estate activities and the development of the city through this agency. Many big real estate deals of his time were consummated through his efforts, and the Lindstedt Company, later Lindstedt-Hoffman Co., was the liaison in negotiations that concerned various large real estate enterprises. In the earlier days these consisted of railroad projects and the laying out of subdivisions, while lately it was the building of residence sections and business blocks and the organization of public utility companies. Mr. Lindstedt was always interested in civic welfare. His advice was often sought in the affairs of moment and his counsel was wise and judicious. Aside from his business life, he was a great lover of the outdoors and when, after a well-rounded business career, he decided to retire, he sought surcease from care in his summer home at Lac Vieux Desert where he spent as many months of the year as possible. He was a family man primarily and loved nothing more than to be surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren at his home in the north woods where fishing, hunting and gardening gave him his relaxation. Mr. Lindstedt was a man of firm convictions and when he made a friendship it was a lasting one. He kept open house at all times and delighted in entertaining his friends at his summer home where he was as familiar with woods and waters as any native. He had participated in much of the early pioneering of that part of the state and in later days enjoyed going back to the haunts he delighted in. His haven at Vieux Desert was a testimonial to a lover of nature and from the forest primeval he had taken just enough of the clearing to establish a domicile leaving the surroundings just as Nature had created them. The deer came to his back door, wild fowl sought sanctuary near by, secure in the knowledge of protection and though familiar with every stream and lake in the vicinity, he courted rather than destroyed the game that abounded there. As years go, Mr. Lindstedt was not an old man. He was taken when apparently he had still quite some time left to enjoy a heritage of thrift and hard work. While it was generally known that he was ill the hope was held out that he would ultimately recover, regain his health and spend many remaining years in well earned retirement. The end came as a shock. Always a fighter, he did not give up even when the ravages of a physical breakdown undermined his strength. He will be greatly missed in this community and to the members of his family is extended sincere condolence in their bereavement. Manitowoc Herald Times, December 20, 1932 P. 4 (editorial page) ********* Lindstedt Rites Are Held This Afternoon Final rites for the late Julius Lindstedt, well known Manitowoc real estate operator and business man, who died on Monday afternoon, took place this afternoon from the home, North Tenth and New York avenue. The services, which were simple, were in charge of the Rev. W. F. Hood of the St. James church. Charles Hejda, Charles Tills, William Ohde, Norman Johnson, Edgar Born and Frank Hoffmann acted as pallbearers. Interment was at Evergreen cemetery. Little Robert was dearly beloved and the bereavement to the parents in his death appears what seems to be the very wantonness of the destroyer.
